2. Digipak #1 – Front cover/back Colours They feature similar colours, and similarly in relation to inside the Digipak. The red on both the front and back also contrast well, in addition to the way Justin looks to be wearing a black tee which fades into the dark background, although the back cover has a lighter background. Also, the brightness of the image to the left of his head on the front cover, draws attention to it. Imagery The back and front both contain images of the artist himself, which is common amongst many albums/singles. The image of Justin’s head contrasts well against the dark background, and has the effect that it makes him stand out much more. The image next to him, which looks like it is trying to portray the image of the screen being smashed, draws the attention of anyone browsing, and gives a sort of ‘bad boy’ image to Justin. The back cover shows him just wearing a hoodie with nothing on underneath, which leaves much to the imagination. Again, it gives him a slightly ‘bad boy’ image, which may or may not be intentional. Text The text is similar throughout both the front and back cover. The name ‘Justin Timberlake’ is in the same font and colour themes. In particular, the layout of the track listing is simple, clear and easy to read which is a vital part of the layout, and again the font is the same within its style and colour. The reason the back cover has ‘Justin’ in red, is to make it stand out against the rest of the setup.
3. Digipak #1 - Inside Colours The colours inside have to be similar to the primary ones on the cover, and they are in this example. The dark background, contrasting with the white text plays well to the eye. This digipak contains the central part, the CD itself with the surrounding images and text. The CD itself is dark in colour. Text The text is minimal on the left. The left shows images that tell you which albums are on this album. It’s basically a combination of Future Sex Love Sounds, and Justified, his two albums, on one album. Again, all text is the same throughout to enhance his image. The text on the right of the digipak tells you about the history of the artist and some information related to the album. Again, the white text is contrasting against the dark background, which is further enhanced by the image to the right of the text. Again, on the CD, the ‘Justin Timberlake’ is in the same text as the front and back covers, to maintain this image. There is also the red mark that can be found on the front cover. Imagery The images are simple. They show him in a good light, he appears to be smiling in all of them. The white suit he is wearing in the image on the right helps the text to flow and look more attractive. The main purpose of the image on the left, which is similar to the front cover is to make him look attractive and maintain his appeal to the younger generation and in particular, girls.
4. Digipak #2 – Front Cover/Back Colours The colours are bright and bold. There is a primary colour range of reds and orange, however there are plenty of secondary colours such as blue and purple. These colours along with the abstract features enable the album to stand out more. I think this is the purpose for the such strong use of colour. Imagery The images are abstract and strange. The name of the album and artist name is strange as well. The artist seems to revolve around being an alternative artist with a slightly weird style. It would convey the image that their dress sense matches this abstractness, and so does their music. The image shows a person wearing a headscarf and white unbuttoned shirt. First thoughts are that it is a woman, however they have hair on their chest which leads me to believe it may be a man. The scarf in the image, also portrays the idea of a lost identity, maybe not knowing who he is. The back cover also relates to very conceptual art, with varying use of colour and random images or patterns. Text There is very little text on both front and back covers. The track listing font is the same as the font on the spine. The lettering is slightly different, which relates to the theme of the album. The track listings are at an angle and placed directly on the image of the hand, perhaps portraying the idea that the hand is holding them.
5. Digipak #2 - Inside Colours Again, the colours are mixed up. The CD is bright yellow and has the hand print on it. This seems brighter simply because of the dark background which seems surprisingly simple compared to everything else. The image on the left seems to be a silhouette of an elephant which is a very random image. There are no real patterns in this, just random and abstract colours/patterns which represent what the artist is about. Imagery The image on the left is the silhouette of a herd of elephants. There are also random black marks around this which don’t seem to mean much. Also, the images of the hand print on the CD itself, could appear to be the artists ‘logo’ if you like, or what he they are known for. Text The text is limited on the inside of this Digipak. Other than the artist and album name on the CD, which are the same font. Furthermore, there is the text in the bottom left hand corner, which detail the record company logo, production companies etc.
