1. Link Between Art Work and Album Title –
As the Album is called ‘The Mark, Tom and
Travis Show’; the artwork is more than
relevant to the Title. You can see that the
artwork is Blink 182 in cartoon form playing a
live show in front of an audience. You can see
Mark playing Bass, Tom playing Guitar, and
Travis playing Drums. The live show imagery
also links to the fact the album is mostly a Live
Album. The audio was recorded at a show
they played in Australia, and it is all taken
from the show apart from one Recorded Track
‘Man Overboard’, which was placed on the
album as a bonus for the fans.
Intertextual References – There are two main Intertextual
References that are on the cover of this Album. The first one
being the ‘Enema of the State’ Nurse (The Album released
Before this one) who is sat on an Amp looking very seductive.
Also, the letter ‘F’ on Travis’ Drum Kit is the logo for his
Clothing Line ‘Famous Stars and Straps’.
Positioning of Band Name and Album Title
– The Font of the Band Name and Album Title
link in very well with the theme of the album.
As you can see, they are presented in the form
of a sign that is advertising an event. You
would normally see this kind of sign at
somewhere like a Drive In Cinema (Mainly in
America) through the use of the words ‘Drive
In’. ‘The Mark, Tom and Travis Show’ is in
Capital Letters in order to stand out more to
the person looking at the Cover, plus the Red
contrasts against the White, making it easier
to read. The ‘Blink 182’ being White also
contrasts against the Black Background, but is
in Lower Case Letters and a more Cursive
Style Font. Having the Sign slightly off centre
enables it to be clearly seen as nothing is
blocking it, and it has its own space.
Link with the Art Work, Blink 182 and
their Genre – Blink 182 are very iconic for
being Immature, and also quite Fun at the
same time. I think that these elements
reflect through the Art Work in the
following ways:
-Immature; The Underwear hanging from
Tom’s Mic Stand.
- Fun; The Bright Colours of the Art Work,
and especially the Illustration of Mark, he
appears to be having a good time.
When looking into the Genre that Blink
182 are in (Pop Punk/Punk Rock), you can
see through the Art Work that Blink are a
Performing Band who play their own
Instruments in front of Paying Fans. Each
member also shows certain
Characteristics of the Genre:
- Mark; Black Hair, Plimsole Style Shoes,
Spiked Hair, Tube Socks (Late 90s Early
00s)
- Tom; Backwards Hat, Piercings (Lip and
Stretchers), Long Sleeved Shirt under
Short Sleeved T-Shirt, Plimsole Style
Shoes, Black Nail Varnish
- Travis – Tattoos, Piercings (Lip, Ears),
Long Messy Hair, No Shirt, Black Hair,
Tube Socks, Side Burns
Colour Scheme – The Art Work has a
wide range of Colours in it, but the main
ones that stand out to me are Pink, Blue
and Green, as these three are the Spot
Lights surrounding the Band Members. I
feel that the Colours are relevant to the
Fun Element Blink 182 have, and it reflects
that Live Shows are often Bright and
Vibrant with all of the Lights and Effects.
The Red on Mark’s Shirt and round the
Blink 182 Sign also stands out to me.
Sticker – There is a Sticker that provides the Audience with
more information regarding the Album. On this, the name of
the Album is states, along with Features of the CD and some
key Tracks. It is also stated that the Album is ‘Limited Edition’,
which may persuade some Blink fans to buy the CD more. The
font of ‘Limited Edition’ is in capital letters and a different
colour to most of the accompanying font. This contrast
between Blue and White enables this factor to stand out more
to the audience, and hopefully catch their attention. As well as
stating basic information regarding the alum on this sticker,
there are also the emblems of the band members in cartoon
form, this could be to link the sticker more to the look of the
album cover.
Parental Advisory Warning – Due to the
nature of Blink 182, there needs to be this
Warning on their Albums.to simply prevent
people being offended by their Lyrics. Music
within the Rock Genre often have Expletives
in their songs, and despite some Bands not
using this language (for example, Post Rock
Emo Band, Brand New), it is an element that is
often associated with Bands of this caliber.
