The Effects Of Depression And The Stress On Adolescents
Abstract Stress on adolescents that is caused by school created pressures is a very controversial
topic in today's society. They are required to have so much of their life figured out and achieve
academic excellence or else they will be ruining their adult lives that they have not had much time to
even think about. Such crucial responsibilities being given to them can cause the pressure to have
both mental and physical effects on the adolescents. A lot more adolescents are feeling this stress
than what most assume and are feeling their stress more intensely than adults. Some of the specifics
that will be discussed are the mental effect of depression and the physical impact stress has on
eating, exercise, and sleep patterns. An important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is more than just a topic of television shows, movies, or social media posts it is something that
adolescents struggle to cope with everyday and if untreated it will leave long lasting impressions on
their future development as an adult. Often times, parents just wanting the best for their children,
end up doing more harm than good. Despite what parents may think school is a major influence on a
student's mental and emotional well–being; while in theory it is supposed to be a safe haven of sorts,
in practice it has been found to pile on unnecessary stressors for students causing their mental health
to deteriorate. Causes of this stress Schooling itself is too general of a cause for why students are
suffering from such drastic changes in their mental state. Students have reported that their main
causes of stress in school are tests, getting good grades, completing homework, and managing time
(i.e., APA, 2009; Conner, Pope, & Galloway, 2010; de Anda et al., 2000; Lohman & Jarvis, 2000).
All of these concerns are what education systems enforce in efforts to increase the student's future
productivity at the college level and in the working world. However, students are convinced that
their whole purpose of living is to be a high test score or grade, be accepted it into decent colleges,
and live comfortably in a never changing career status. There is also constant changes in the

Adolescent Depression Essay 5
Depression is a disease that afflicts the human psyche in such a way that the afflicted tend to act and
react abnormally toward others and themselves. Adolescent depression is greatly under diagnosed,
and leads to serious difficulties in school, and personal adjustment. The reason why depression is
often overlooked in children is because children are not always able to express how they feel.
Therefore, teachers should be trained in dealing with depressed youths, and to advise the parents of
the child to seek professional treatment. School is the place where children spend most of their
waking hours learning, socializing, and growing. A child needs to be mentally healthy in order to
learn properly, and sometimes problems arise at home, with ... Show more content on

Poor spellers (left hemisphere learning disability), practicing spelling for the spelling test, become
increasingly dysphoric, anxious, and irritable as the school year progresses. The repeated attempts to
preform language functions by these children stimulates poorly functioning in the left cerebral
hemisphere which leads to dysfunction of the opposite right hemisphere areas which results in
depressive symptoms (Fassler 125). These examples represent the interaction between
environmental stress and cerebral dysfunction. Right hemisphere learning/ communication disorders
are characterized by difficulties with social communication including social discomfort, dysprosody
(difficulties understanding the gestures or speech tones of others), ordering problems (difficulties
with sequencing, timing, and context), motor and social dyspraxias (clumsiness), Young people with
right hemisphere learning communication disorders, during adolescence and adulthood, are at high
risk for major depressive disorder often exacerbated by the inappropriate stress promoted by
education directed at their communication difficulties. In many communities, the only kids who can
access mental health services are those who are deeply disturbed. Therefore, kids are more likely to
talk to a school–based counselor because it is cheaper, it can be anonymous, and it is right there for

The Problem Of Adolescent Depression
Today, adolescent depression is a very significant problem. In most cases, depression is the leading
cause of why adolescents tend to make rash decisions and cause problems to themselves and also for
others. Emerging adulthood coincides with adolescents as it is a time of feeling in–between. A child
is growing to become a teen, a teen is becoming a young adult, and the young adult is becoming an
mature, independent adult. Throughout this time, there are many paths to choose from, hardships to
overcome, decisions to make, and experiences to learn from. This can be the most stressful time in a
persons life. All of these things contribute to adolescent stress, anxiety, and depression, which very
much so, turns to drug–use, juvenile ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of the time, parents do not understand that their children are suffering. Adolescents don't know
how to express how they feel, and don't know how to handle things going on in their lives. Knowing
these symptoms, and become more invested in your child, students, patients lives, this disease can
be prevented before it gets worse.
Many differences in symptoms and behavior occur between males and females with adolescent
depression. For example, it had been found that females have stronger feelings of self–blame, guilt,
distorted body image, etc. Because of these symptoms, females tend to become more open to
troubles with their health as an outcome of their depression. Girls are more prone to crying a lot, and
removing themselves from situations involving their close family and friends. Girls also may lose or
gain weight due to feeling bad about themselves, or not paying attention to what they are eating.
They often times lose sleep, or sleep too much. But, one of the most significantly worrisome things
that these depressed adolescent girls do, is psychically hurting themselves, or becoming
promiscuous in order to gain "self–worth".
On the other hand, although males are less likely to be diagnosed than females, for the ones who are
diagnosed, suicide is attempted more often and is successful. Young males with depression have a
tendency to sleep a lot more. Males do not withdraw as much, as they are usually more

Adolescent Depression in the U.S. Essay
Everyday, teenagers have a routine. They usually get up, go to school, and come home. Each of
these activities are filled with many complex issues, stress related problems, and pressure. These
issues can lead to depression. Every 1 teenager out of 5 will develop a type of depression (Jones 1).
"Adolescent depression is a disease that affects the psyche in a way that the person affected with it
will act and react abnormally toward others and themselves" (Blackman 2). About 19 million
Americans are diagnosed with some sort of depression. 9 million of them are adolescents (Jones 1).
Suicide is affiliated with depression greatly. 15% of all adolescents who are diagnosed with
depression commit suicide (Jones 1). "Since 1995, suicide is ... Show more content on

Teenagers are faced with many difficult decisions, not only I school, but in normal life. Making
important decisions can cause stress. In 1986, a study was done of Minnesota high school students.
Results show that 39% of the students who were stressed suffer from mild depression. Many things
cause stress. A breakup with a boy/girl friend, increased arguments with parents, trouble with
brother or sister, change in parents' financial status, serious illness or injury of family member, or
the leading cause, trouble with classmates, or grades. All of these events are centered at the places
an adolescent's life usually take place, home and school. When a teenaged girl was asked, "Do you
feel stressed out over homework"? The answer was, "Yes, I think about what homework I have the
whole car ride home from school"(An Interview).
The need to fit in is a major factor to adolescent depression. When children move towards
adolescence, they become more involved with their peers. This is when teens begin to "discover" the
world. This is when peer pressure comes into place. Not all peer pressure can be bad. Some can be
pressuring others to do positive things with their lives. When parents hear about the peer pressure
going on, they have an automatic reaction to it. "An automatic reaction can actually put negative
pressure on their own child"(Peer Pressure and it's effect on Teens 1). A teenager

Depression And Its Effects On Adolescent Depression
Depression is an issue facing a large amount of people today. It has becoming increasingly known
that a lot of depression begins to start in the adolescent years for many individuals. The social work
profession is critical in helping this adolescent depression not lead to further depression in
adulthood. To understand adolescent depression and what is needed to help people suffering from it,
we need to further understand the prevalence of adolescent depression, the effects it has on teens
socially, populations that are vulnerable to depression in adolescents, as well as what a social
worker's role in assessing and treating adolescent depression is.
Depression today seems to have become a synonym for sadness. Though many people with
depression tend to struggle with sadness, it is in itself a mental health problem and not just your
everyday unhappiness. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (2014), "Clinical
depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with
everyday life for weeks or more" (Depression 2014 n.p.). This shows that depression goes from
situational to clinical when it starts to affect your every day activity and not just your mood.
Depression can occur in people of all ages but has a lot of negative effects on adolescents and their
development. According to The Journal of Abnormal Psychology (2003), "depression [happens to
be] one of the most commonly occurring disorders in child–hood and

Are Negative Events Affecting Adolescent Depression?
"Adolescent depression is increasing at an alarming rate. Recent surveys indicate that as many as
one in five teens suffers from clinical depression." Most people confuse depression with just feeling
sad or down; however, depression is actually a condition that affects mood in the brain. Depression
can affect the way people think, feel, or even act. Depression can last for many months. This is
called an episode of depression and most people that have depression or get it will experience many
episodes of depression in their lifetime. Negative events can trigger an episode of depression. Some
negative events can include loss of a loved one, severe stress, a disability in the family, bullying, etc.

In the DSM IV major depressive disorder is classified by depressive episodes lasting at the least two
weeks at which a depressed mood is shown including a loss of enjoyment in previously pleasurable
activities and or loss of interest a sad or irritable mood, a significant change in weight or appetite,
problems sleeping or concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness. When this intense sorrow begins
to tatter with your self–worth and causes you to feel hopeless for a period of time enabling you from
performing normal daily routines it may very well be clinical depression one may be suffering from.
Clinical Depression is a mood disorder that is treatable.
The symptoms of a depressed individual often reflect: hopelessness, agitation, guilt, feelings of
worthlessness, fatigue, significant weight loss, insomnia and thoughts of suicide. Depression can
distort the way that an individual views their lives, self or even the things around them. The effects
of depression are expressed in numerous different ways among various age groups. For adolescents
and young adults symptoms may include irritability, sadness, avoidance of social interactions and
anxiety. This is the time when emotional turmoil and heightened sensitivity are more prevalent. Thus

Adolescent depression While researching I found out that many things about adolescent depression
and thanks to the authors that published books, newspaper and magazines. These authors provided
useful information about adolescent depression that helps me understand the results or tragic
outcomes which made me value this issue. Providing me with graphs, rates, discussions and
informing me with important information about adolescent depression. The information authors
provided me answered me many questions I had and laid out information that help me prove my
point of adolescent issue. However my target is to prove that depression in adolescents is a serious
issue because it is evolving everyday leading to discouragement, internal conflict, and even suicide.
To prove my point I arranged my paper by first letting the audience know what adolescent
depression is and how is it taking place in our society. Then I provide four sections: analysis, cause
and effects of adolescent depression, how the media contributes with adolescent depression,
counterclaim. Each section explains or gives evidence to prove my statement and in my
counterclaim I put myself into my opponents' shoes proving why I think adolescent depression is not
a serious issue. Then last I give my conclusion restating my claim and providing solutions to this
issue of adolescent depression.

Negative Effects Of Social Media
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
Background
Tweng (2017) questioned the connection between smartphones and the apparent psychological
distress this generation of adolescents is experiencing. One can question if the psychological distress
that many adolescents are experiencing when they communicate on their social media sites is not
depression. Since social media is a primary source of communication used today, one questions how
it affects society and especially the adolescent. Therefore, this research study wants to enrich the
existing findings of how rapid communication done thru social media can evoke internalizing
symptoms leading today's adolescents into major depression.
In fact, cell phones, tablets, computers, etc., link adolescents ... Show more content on

The fourth chapter provides the research findings that were concluded within the eight case studies
used in this study. The fifth chapter has the author's conclusion and discussion of further research.
Finally the sixth chapter contains an excerpt providing parents an essential guideline to help them
guide their adolescents within Biblical principles the use of Social Media. Therefore, such an
extensive study must start with a foundation of the issue at hand.
This first chapter hopes to give the reader what the problem is, why such a study is important and
what it will contribute to the greater body of knowledge already provided. So this chapter will have
four distinctive subchapters. The first will present how the theoretical Gestalt perspective views the
human experience and how an individual will get fixed in a destructive behavior. This will help the
reader understand that individuals and especially adolescents have a specific problem when it comes
to rapid communication which will lead many into depression. In addition, it will view depression
through the Gestalt theory. It also presents the major problem adolescent deal with while
communicating in social media. It will address the consequences that affect many adolescents with
the use of social media. The second subchapter will give an understanding of the purpose of this
particular study viewing the vast difference seen

Depression And Adolescent Analysis
The depression rate steadily stays consistent each year with around 7% of people reportedly
suffering from it, with the numbers higher in females than males. The rate in adolescence stays at
12.5% during a 12–month prevalence period (SAMHSA), and with alcohol and other coping
mechanism being introduced during early teen years depression is a real factor in many of these
people as they reach adulthood. As teens get closer to being of legal age the depression rate increase
steadily from 5.4% to around 16%, it's safe to say that the age of highest reported depression and
mood disorder standard is during teenage years (SAMHSA). The goal of this paper is to analyze and

Much like with phobias, where the child can develop a phobia of a specific thing because the parent
has it, depression can develop if an adult around a child has a history or is currently dealing with
depression. It's estimated that between 20–50% of teens who are suffering from depression are
reported to have a family member suffering from depression (Borchard). If a child, early in life, sees
their mother or father dealing trying to cope with depression they may follow suit, exhibiting signs
of sadness and dissociation at an early age. Depression, as we know, is a form of disorder that stems
from internal and external unhappiness, and if shown these signs early in life a child may begin to
believe that this is normal. This could lead to a lifelong struggle with depression or many other
upsetting scenarios. The distressing rate of teenage depression could be due to vicarious
conditioning, the exposure of a specific thing at an early age which leads to a mimicry of these
emotions. Adults suffering from depression may say bleak and alarming things that could influence
the child that there is no hope in the world. This nihilistic viewpoint will continue until shown other
ways, and if the child spends the majority of their life with the parents, then it could not go away at

leading mental health issue amongst teen in America is depression. Depression (major depressive
disorder) is defined in the American Psychiatric Association as causing an overwhelming feeling of
sadness and loss of interest in activity. One must understand the causes of depression, how
depression affects the adolescence, and how to treat adolescence depression in order to help those

The unstable balancing of hormones in the body can trigger the onset of depression. When
neurotransmitters (natural brain chemicals) are impaired while carrying signals to other parts of the
body, nerve systems and receptors can change which will cause depression. Environmental factors
in ones life is the third cause which can lead an adolescent to being susceptible to developing
depression. Environmental factors that can cause depression are factors of everyday life that bring
stress and discomfort to the adolescent. The home life of an adolescent will determine the quality of
life he has. Divorce, financial instability, dysfunctional family, lack of sleep, abuse, death, bulling,
and school are just a few of the numerous environmental factors that can negatively impact the
adolescents life leading to depression. Not only is the cause of depression necessary in
understanding those who suffer from depression, but understanding the affect it has on the
adolescent is necessary to help those suffering. Depression affects the adolescent emotionally,
physically, and functionally. In understanding these three factors, one can understand the mindset
and mentality the depressed adolescent is feeling. Emotions are essential to determining the outcome
of ones day. If ones emotions are unstable, it creates an internal battle of feeling at peace.

Association reports that depression occurs if at least 5 of the following symptoms occur for at least 2

or loss, psychomotor agitation or retardation, fatigue, misplaced guilt, a lack of concentration, or
even recurrent thoughts of death. Approximately 121 million people are affected by some form of

The social isolation leads to the feelings of depression. It is reported that depression could be caused
by a chemical imbalance in the brain that medication can correct. According to the theory of
chemical imbalance, low levels of the brain chemical serotonin lead to depression and depression
medication works by bringing serotonin levels back to normal ( Laramine, 1995). However some
studies suggest that there are no concrete ways to test serotonin in the brain so this theory has not
been proven (Smith, Robinson, Segal and Ramsey 2014). It is suggested that depression among
adolescents can be detected early if family members, school officials, and other people within the
community recognize the warning signs. Adolescents experiencing depression are often sad and
sometimes having crying spells. They often are restless and have difficult times sleeping. They feel
fatigued and irritable and often have feelings of shame or worthlessness. There are times when
adolescents feel bored or lose interest in activities that they once enjoyed. Adolescents experiencing
depression often have a hard time concentrating or making decisions. Their demeanor may change
including talking or moving slow. They may lose or gain weight. Lastly, and probably the most
severe sign is that of suicidal thoughts (King and Vidorek, 2012). Treatments for depression among

Depression In Adolescents: A Case Study
The concept of a happy childhood being a carefree, never–ending recess before the responsibilities
of adulthood set in is just as realistic as the cartoons children watch on television. To the contrary,
adolescents today feel less safe, less inspired and less hopeful than ever before. It is not surprising
then that depression is a common concomitant to adolescent development (Tharper, Collishaw, &
Pine, 2012). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately one in five
adolescents between the ages of nine and twenty four is clinically depressed and more than twenty
percent of adolescents will have experienced a major depressive episode before reaching adulthood

According to the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, the reason why depression is often over looked
in children and adolescents is because "children are not always able to express how they feel"
(Brown, Hammen, Craske & Wickens, 1995). In addition, depression among adolescents is difficult
to diagnose because it is a developmental stage associated with rebellion and experimentation
marked by emotional turmoil, mood swings, and heightened sensitivity. The prevailing
misconceptions regarding children's mood and behavior detracts clinicians from properly diagnosing
this widely prevalent child health issue (Brown et al., 1995). Thus, to recognize and treat this
disorder is important. Depending on the clinician's diagnostic approach, lack of careful examination
can lead to missed signs for clinical depression (Cole & Bird, 2000). An examination of the
biomedical approach demonstrates why there is a lack of consideration by healthcare providers.
First, the biomedical model characterizes diseases by biological determinants and explains disease
as a condition caused by external pathogens or disorders in the functions of organs and body
systems (Cole & Bird, 2000). Such an approach has proved effective in the control of widespread
infectious diseases. However, now that non–infectious chronic illnesses predominate, the efficiency
of the biomedical approach has not only become questionable but underlying economic
justifications have been raised. Second,

often as a result of a change, either in the form of a setback or a loss, or simply, as Freud said,

Tertiary Prevention Be wary of movies and TV shows that feature idealized characters and
situations. If your child routinely gauges himself or herself against an impossible ideal, feelings of
disappointment or depression might follow.
Repeated exposure to negative or violent content might also aggravate feelings of depression,
perhaps by promoting a negative or fearful view of the world.
To prevent complications associated with adolescent depression in the home;
Do not keep alcohol in the home or keep it securely locked
Lock all guns and keep ammunition separate
Lock up all prescription medications
On the flip side, some research suggests that reading during adolescence might have the opposite
effect perhaps offering a buffer against depression.

Online Forms Of Communications, Like Social Media
Online forms of communications, like social media, have undoubtedly provided convenient methods
to communicate with anyone at any moment. Adolescents have been reported to spend on average
six hours consuming media (Wallace). The point when an unhealthy amount of time is spent on
social media is when negative social risks can begin to present themselves–children and adolescents,
who are experience significant brain growth and development, are the most at risk for social
damage. Heidi, a thirteen–year–old girl previously described as a happy, sweet, and loving girl,
screams "I'm going to kill you while you are both asleep" as she flails and kicks her father before
biting his arm. This was Heidi's second violent rage in a week because her parents took away her
access to social media; this would also be the second time that she would be taken to a psychiatric
emergency room (Kardaras). Heidi is one adolescent who has crossed the line of healthy social
media usage and now has moved towards risks likes anxiety and depression, social media
dependency, and inadequate social skills. Social media can negatively affect mental health causing
by an overall decline in mental health, anxiety, and depression–adolescents who use media the most
among their peers report being overall less content and are often unhappy(Carroll). On social media
sites like Facebook, people can choose what version or parts of themselves they can show to
people–so most people may choose to show the best parts.

The Causes of Adolescent Depression
"According to Mental Health America, one in every five teens has clinical depression" ("Safe

Many teens in America, as well as the rest of the world, are affected by teenage depression.
Depression is an effect for many teens, with many causes. As a result, there are three major causes
for teenage depression such as: Genetics, Environment, and Unhealthy Habits. In this essay, I will
go in depth the many causes for teen depression.

Family history can also cause teens to have depression just as much as inherited traits. Adolescents
can get depression if others in their family have depression. This includes: great grandparents,
grandparents, aunts, uncles, and siblings as well. "Family members of depressed adolescents show
markedly elevated rates of major depression and moderately elevated rates of alcohol abuse,
according to the team's study, which appears in the January Arches of General Psychiatry" (Bower).
As a matter of fact not only are teens affected by other family members other than their parents with
depression but are at higher risk for abusing alcohol according to Bruce Bower who wrote "Teenage
Depression Shows Family Ties." "There does appear to be a strong family connection also. A new
investigation has found that adult depression and the teenage version run in the same families"
(Bower). Therefore, not only are there strong family connections with teen depression, but also adult
depression and adolescent depression are similar. Researchers have been able to determine that
adolescents with depression may have got it from their parents. "There was a study done with over
2,000 participants from nine high–schools in western Oregon. The study found that a high rate of
depressed adolescents had parents with major depression of other mental health disorders" (Bower).
Without doubt teen depression can be developed from family

bonus the biological changes of their bodies. While dealing with these, many adolescents soon begin
to face depression as well. Depression affects a little over 20% of adolescents. Depression is a
disorder that disturbs mood, causes a loss of interest or pleasure in activities someone would
normally enjoy, and makes an individual irritable. Recently there have been several things which are
thought to be correlated with depression in adolescents. Some examples include, insecure
attachments, and negative parental representations. From the moment a child is born the connection
and bond that they form with their caregiver can determine whether they will form healthy
relationships with another individuals throughout their lifetime In my research proposal paper, I
wish to examine the role of attachment exhibits in adolescent depression. My hypothesis is that
insecurely attached adolescents, are more prone to display higher levels of depression symptoms and
behaviors than securely attached adolescents. In the research article by Agerup (2015), there was an
aim to examine associations of attachment to mothers, fathers, and peers with the observed course of
clinical depression. The demographic information was collected via interview and finalized via two
subset interviews. In addition, there were three data collection waves used. The first wave, which
was conducted in 1998 had a total of

Depression And Its Effects On Adolescents
Throughout the world, people are suffering from this disease. Depression affects people without
regard to gender, age, or background. "Depression is a common but serious mood disorder.
Depression can cause changes in how you feel, think, and manage daily activities, such as sleeping,
eating, or working. To be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two
weeks" (NIMH » Depression, 1). "Major depression is a common mental disorder affecting
adolescents in the United States" (NIMH » Major Depression Among Adolescents, 1). Depression is
mostly experienced by teens, but is considered an adult illness. In adolescents, some of the greatest
reasons for depression is due to the maturation process, the stress that comes with it, sex hormones,
and conflicts with parents. When seeking an adolescent with depression, there are countless warning
signs to be aware of. A few of the signs to be aware of being suicidal ideation, poor performance in
school, a general feeling of sadness, and changes in eating and/or sleeping routines. Additional
warning signs may include feelings of hopelessness, irritability, anger, hostility, frequent crying,
withdrawals from friends and family, loss of interest in daily activities, restlessness, agitation,
feelings of worthlessness and guilt, lack of enthusiasm and motivation, fatigue, lack of energy,
difficulty concentrating, unexplained aches and pains, and thoughts of suicide (Smith & Segal, 2016,

Mental Health in Adolescents
The patient is a thirteen year old female diagnosed with depression/ depression NOS. She is in the
hospital for attempting to kill herself by stabbing her stomach with a knife. She had been there for
almost a week when the assessment was conducted. Hand off states she sees things in the shadows
(visual hallucinations), and she was molested by her thirty year old cousin and sodomised by her
neighbor when she was four. Her home situation is not a therapeutic one, her and one of her
mother's fights constantly, and see feels her mother is two faced and she cannot talk to this mother
about her feelings. The patient is very shy, and just wants to draw ninja turtles, but through
therapeutic communication and observation she began to open up. She is dressed appropriate for the
weather, and has a good understanding of advance vocabulary, but does go off on her own to look
outside a lot. The full assessment can be found in the appendix at the end of the paper. The aim of
this study is to describe priority nursing diagnoses, outcomes, and interventions, tests, labs and
medications for this patient, the patient's diagnosis according to the DSM–V and then examine a

Adolescent Self Esteem Essay
The study by Steese et al. (2006) included 63 adolescent girls with a mean age of 13. The program
met for ten weeks. Each session featured a different topic, such as relationships and friendship.
Results of the study indicate that self–esteem measures between testing were not significant, but
several related concepts proved to be. Self–efficacy attitudes did significantly improve after
treatment and can be linked to positive self–esteem. An explanation for their results is the possibility
that the short duration of time could not change girls' levels of self–esteem. "Every Body is
Somebody" is another program (McVey & Davis, 2002) with the goal of improving several areas in
participants' lives, including body image satisfaction, eating ... Show more content on

Parents' involvement in the process of building self–esteem appeared to contribute to adolescents'
improved perceptions of how their parents view them. There are also multicultural considerations to
have within the literature on adolescent self–esteem. Berk (2007) considers culture as one of the
greatest influences on a child's self–esteem. Cultural values and traditions impact how an adolescent
feels about themselves and their place in the world. Culture can be protective or it can present an
adolescent with stress that may damage self–esteem. Keeny and McEachern (2009) identify many
multicultural challenges to self–esteem. Some of these challenges include acculturation and
discrimination. If an adolescent does not demonstrate behaviors valued by the culture in which they
reside, their behaviors will prove to be potential challenges to their self–esteem. This must be taken
into consideration when reviewing the literature on these adolescent populations. In addition to
being cautious about what language and vocabulary is used in self–esteem research, researchers
should clearly define what aspect of self–esteem they are measuring. In a sample of adolescents
ranging in age from 12 to 16 years old, Kenny and McEachern (2009) found that Hispanic
adolescents scored higher than both African American and Caucasians on their self–concept. When

Adolescent Depression
Depression is something that I really have had no experience with in my life. Personally, I might
have thought about killing myself figuratively at one specific point in my life. I thought about what
the consequences would be and how it would effect the people who surround me in my life. As soon
as these thoughts raced through my mind, I quickly realized that suicide is the wrong way to deal
with life. I know that depression plays an essential role when dealing with suicide. There are three
main depressive orders: Major Depressive Disorder, Dysthymia, and Bipolar Disorder. Major
depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms (see symptom list) that interfere with the

Individual factors are things such as peer pressure, family issues, economic problems, or medical
problems.
From my experience, peer pressure or fitting in, is the single most prevalent problem among
adolescents today. This seems to be because the demands on today 's adolescents are more complex
than they used to be for previous generations. Many of today 's youth fail to have a source of
guidance and love, whether it is a family, role model, or even a group of friends. To help adolescents
deal with peer pressure one could provide opportunities for success such as joining a group that
encourage and value the individual. Another way to help the individual would be to focus on the
positive by praising their accomplishments. Preparing adolescents with alternatives such as
discussing ways to resist peer pressure and thinking for themselves are good ways to help them
cope. When dealing with the topic of depression, many times it 's because the adolescent doesn 't fit
in nor have any friends to help him/her with their problem. Peers are necessary for normal social
development and can be an effective role model as well. In many cases, ones self concept is
influenced by how he/she is viewed by their peers. The concept of self is a big factor of why
adolescents fall under the disorder of depression. When dealing with the idea of treatment, the first
thing that all patients should do is to seek out a physical examination by a

benefits of an already supported treatment approach cognitive therapy but with adolescents with
depression. The study had three goals; one, to investigate the efficacy of cognitive bibliotherapy
with adolescents whom have mild–moderate depression. The second was to explore the relation of 3
variables; compliance, participation, and comprehension to the outcomes. The third goal was to test
cognitive theory of depression. The research question is relevant to social work but the article does

As some of us may know, depression is reflected as a mental health condition that can lead
individuals to attempt/commit suicide against their life. In addition, depression is a disorder that
causes individual to feel despondent, and with no goals to achieve. With that said, sometimes these
individuals give–up activities that were once entertaining, loses appetite, or begins to overeat, or
loses focus on what they are trying to achieve, and becomes inconclusive. According to Kringlen et
al., (2001) depression is classified as a second disorder to alcohol abuse and is the most prevalent
disorder among the adolescent population. Thus, Joshi et al., (2009) identified mental health
ailments to be linked with authoritarian parental styles, then authoritative and permissive parenting
style. In accordance with Kringlen et al (2001), McCarthy et al., (2008) classifies adolescent
depression to be associated with suicide, and recognize it as the third leading cause of death among
adolescents ranging from age 15–24 years old.

Cochrane (1992) found that students at a secondary school who stated they exercised regularly,

for 54 depressed patients, of both sexes, with the average age being 15.6 years of age. However, this
study found that the female participants reported a greater amount of change in depression, anger,

Adolescent Depression and Suicide
SUMMARY: Only in the past two decades, have depression and suicide been taken seriously.
Depression is an illness that involves the body, mood and thoughts. Depression affects the way a
person eats and sleeps, feels about themselves, and the way they think of the things around them. It
comes as no surprise to discover that adolescent depression is strongly linked to teen suicide.
Adolescent suicide is now responsible for more deaths in youths aged 15 to 19 than cardiovascular
disease or cancer (Blackman, 1995). Teen suicide has more than tripled since the 1960's (Santrock,
2003). Despite this alarming increased suicide rate, depression in this age group is largely under–
diagnosed and can lead to serious difficulties in school, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most enter daycare at an early age and continue into preschool. When public school starts, they are
in the early–morning program, after–school program or just latch key kids. Children left to their
own devices at an early age develop sensations of loneliness. Many go home to an empty house with
no one to talk to about their day at school. Once the parents arrive home, it may be time for soccer
practice, baseball practice, or gymnastics class. In my own circumstances, my mother worked two
jobs and was never home often times making me feel as if she was not interested in me. She would
often miss cheerleading competitions that I held important and her absence would be devastating.
Many times parents are too tired to spend time with their children, also leaving the child feeling
neglected. At one end of the spectrum, teens are pushed by parents to excel in sports and academics.
At the other end, there are teens never given direction or aspirations by their parents. Those
pressured to excel maybe come overwhelmed by what is expected of them and can fall into using
drugs and alcohol as a form of escape and may feel the only way out is that of suicide. Those teens
without direction and lack of interest on the part of their parent's also increase likeliness of drugs
and alcohol activity as a means of escape. (Lasko 1996) They may contemplate and even attempt
suicide as a way of either drawing

The Dangers Of Adolescent Depression
Adolescent depression is considered a mental and emotionally disorder that is on the rise among
adolescents. Although this depression is treated the same medically as in adults, symptoms that
adolescents suffer from manifest by a variety of different factors. "Peer pressure, sports, changing
hormone levels, developing bodies, awkward tendencies, and a host of other factors can carry many
ups and downs for teenagers. However, these ups and downs can be signs of depression."
Unfortunately, it seems that early signs of depression in adolescents may continue to follow an
individual into adulthood.
According to the article "Low and Decreasing Self–Esteem during Adolescence Predict Adult
Depression Two Decades Later" authors Steiger, Andrea E., Allemand, Mathias, Robins, Richard W.,
Fend, Helmut A argued that self–esteem is defined as an individual's overall interpretation of their
worth. The article references a study done on global self–esteem in adolescent's interpretation in
terms of physical appearance and academic intelligence. These two factors lie highly important for
developing adolescents as they begin to establish relationships and inquire about academic goals and
skills. It can be predicted that the higher level of self–esteem one has, more full filling personal and
social life outcomes occur. For example, high self–esteem predicts "closeness in romantic
relationships, better job performance, and academic achievement. . In comparison, low self–esteem
can lead to

Effects Of Depression On Children And Adolescents
Introduction Depression is a significant problem for adolescents and one of the most common
reasons that they seek mental health treatment. Depression is often brought on or worsened by
experiencing negative life events such as bullying, abuse or neglect, parental divorce, and countless
others. There are numerous treatment options for depression, but cognitive behavior therapy is one
of the most widely used and heavily researched treatments for depression in children and
adolescents. Adolescents who are depressed often interpret life's events in distorted and negative
ways which can lead to engaging in maladaptive behaviors as a way of coping with life's stressors.

Many adolescents go undiagnosed or do not receive treatment for their depression for several
reasons. Some are fearful of the stigma that comes along with the diagnosis and some do not have
access to treatment. "Common structural obstacles to mental health services include inconvenient
appointment times, transportation difficulties, long waiting lists and prioritization of crisis work in
secondary care settings" (Sclare et al., 2015). Those who do receive treatment often do so in school–
based setting instead of in a clinical environment (Ruffolo and Fischer, 2009). Key Concepts of CBT
Cognitive behavior therapy was developed as a treatment for depression by bringing awareness to
and changing cognitive distortions in depressed clients. Albert Ellis believes that people contribute
to their own psychological problems by the way they interpret life's events and situations. Often
depressed people have negative views about themselves, the world and the future. These negative
views are called the cognitive triad (Corey, 2013), which refers to clients seeing the worst in
themselves by thinking that they are bad, the worst in the world by thinking the world is all bad, and
the worst about the future by thinking that their future is doomed and hopeless so nothing but bad
things will happen to them. Faulty thinking leads to maladaptive emotions and behaviors. Therapists
who practice CBT help their client's change their maladaptive, negative and irrational

Adolescent Depression : Childhood And Adulthood
Adolescent Depression
The period of teens is usually used to describe the stage between childhood and adulthood, which is
defined as the establishment of the onset of puberty, around age 11 to 13 years (Edelman 515).
Many researchers and developmental professionals in the United States use the age span 10 to 24
years as a working definition of adolescence, and this adolescence period talk about to the
psychosocial, emotional, cognitive, and moral changes from childhood to young adulthood, while
puberty refers to the development and maturation of the reproductive, endocrine, and structural
processes that lead to fertility (Edelman 515).Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical
depression) is a serious mood disorder which causes and affect how one feel, think, and handle daily
activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. The symptoms are required existing for at least two
weeks in order to be diagnosed.
Adolescent depression is also known as teenage depression. Teenage depression is a mental and
emotional disorder with no different medically from adult depression. Nevertheless, depressive
symptoms in teens may be noticeable in a teenager in different ways than in adults due to the
different social and age–related challenges facing teens which includes peer pressure, sports,

The Problem Of Adolescent Depression
Adolescent Depression
Depression a word we're familiar with especially when it comes to adults, we know adults get
depress and we understand the reasons, with the high demands in life it's not uncommon to get lost
in the shuffle. Depression in adult is something we have known for many years, but what has
surprised many of us is that adolescents also get depressed. I myself still don't fully understand the
reasons why or how this happens. I see it very often adolescent coming in to the ER because they
are depressed and want to hurt themselves, and each and every single time I'm shock. What could be
so bad in their lives that would make them think they have no way out? This is the reason why I
choice this topic, I want to learn more of how this disease affects so many children and teens and
what we can do to stop it.
People used to believe that children had no reason to be depressed it wasn't till a few years ago: "No
one thought that children could suffer from real depression; there wasn't even an official diagnosis
for childhood depression until 1980" (Fassler 4). But really who would have thought that such a
thing could be possible. Sadly today we know that it's a real disease and it affects more adolescents
than we think: " The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that as many as 2.5 percent of all
American youngsters under the age of eighteen or over 1.5 million children and adolescents are
seriously depressed" (Fassler 2).

participants the research proposal must be submitted for approval. With that said, approval was
granted for the researchers to conduct the study and proceed with the analysis.
The researchers (Reising, et al., 2013) demonstrated parents who suffered from depression as well as
financial hardship did not have a great relationship with their children impacting their
psychopathology internally and externally. Thus (Reising, et al., 2013) revealed there are countless
children living in the United States surrounded by triggers that may direct them to apprehension, for
instance, parents who have suffered or are still suffering from compulsive dejection, financial
economic hardship, and parents who are neglectful are a few characteristics that can and may
influence children and adolescent to stress leading them to behave in a manner that is not aligned
with their community. The following research article are in accordance with the previous literature

Depression and Adolescents
Depression. Is depression possible in young adults? Not until recently doctors thought that kids were
not prone to depression. They thought that depression was purely an "adult" disease. Nowadays,
every doctor knows that a child could be depressed too. The causes of adolescent depression and
treatment outcomes were explored in the article by Pat Wingert and Barbara Kantrowitz "Young and
Depressed" that I will discuss.
This article illustrates a couple of real–life stories of teenagers who faced depression and had to
somehow deal with it. One of the teenagers, Brianne, described how she tried to kill herself because

These therapy sessions have enabled many teenagers to finally focus on school and go on with their
lives as any other kid in school. Still, there are many ongoing studies conducted by researchers who
are trying to find much more effective treatments for depressed adolescents.
The article also shows that depressed teens usually suffer for many years before they are identified.
Even some adults who work with kids (teachers, coaches, pediatricians) can misread the signs of
early depression. Even by professional doctors, those signs or symptoms are often mistaken for
mononucleosis or chronic–fatigue syndrome. Also, finding the right help can be as difficult as
identifying the kids who need help.
Who are the kids at risk of becoming depressed? Studies show that there are many different factors
that could put the child at a high risk of becoming depressed. In most cases, one of those factors is
parental separation. Children seem to be torn when the family is undergoing such major changes as a
divorce. A lot of times, parents don't notice that there is something wrong with their child because
they are so preoccupied with what is going on in their own lives that they don't notice a gradual
decline in their kid's grades and development of the anti–social or delinquent behavior in

Children with ADHD are three times more likely to develop this insufficiency than others (Dixit 18).
A depressed child may also have a conduct disorder, in which the child consistently violates rules
that may be inappropriate for his or her age. Symptoms for this include bullying, stealing, lying, and
being consistently disobedient (Fassler 66). Anxiety disorders affect adolescents as well as adults.
The disorder may stop a child from participating in daily activities, and leave them feeling worried,
withdrawn, and even restless. These children display overly clingy or needy behavior. Depression
and learning disabilities have a strong link to each other.
If the learning problem is not accurately detected, it snowballs up, and these negative experiences
lead to emotional problems for the child thus, depression (Fassler 72). For example, if a child is
having trouble learning grammar in elementary school and does not get any help, then later on in
high school, the child may have trouble writing essays. Other underlying symptoms of depression
are eating disorders, hyperactivity, and substance abuse. That is why teachers need to be able to
identify and consult with the child and parents as soon as they notice a problem.
For children, adolescents, and young adults with learning disabilities school can be an unpleasant
and highly frustrating environment. It is believed that continuous stimulation of a genetically

Adolescent Depression In Catcher In The Rye
Holden's history of family problems, including his brother's death and how he is neglected by his
parents, his patterns of negative thinking, as well as his constant hope that he could one day run
away from his life at home are clear indications that the mental illness Holden faces is adolescent
depression. First, Holden's problems within his family caused him the distress that resulted in
adolescent depression. Holden introduces his family conflicts, specifically negligence, by saying
"you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how
my parents were occupied and all before they had me" (3). Family conflicts and relationship

A clear indication that someone is affected by depression is their will to leave their current situation
by any possible means, usually resulting in running away or suicide. In Holden's case, he hopes to
run away with someone, or alone if necessary. He first begs Sally to do so with him. He says to her,
"We'll stay in these cabin camps and stuff like that till the dough runs out. Then, when the dough
runs out, I could get a job somewhere and we could live somewhere with a brook and all and, later
on, we could get married or something" (147). Holden's desperation to go far away from his home
life is a risk factor of depression. In fact, desperation itself is one the symptoms associated with
depression among teens. Holden doesn't stop with his hope of running away after Sally turns him
down though. Later on, Holden decides that with no one else to run away with, he will leave by
himself. He says his new idea is that he would "go down to the Holland Tunnel and bum a ride, and
then I'd [he'd] bum another one, and another one, and another one, and in a few days I'd [he'd] be
somewhere out West where it was very pretty and sunny and where nobody'd know me [him] and I'd

about it, yet not be depressed. Holden's loneliness contributed to his depression, as loneliness is a

Adolescent Obesity and Depression Essay
Obesity causing depression on adolescents is an important topic because depressive symptoms are
the beginning phase to depression. These young adults who are clinically obese feel like outsiders
and do not feel like they belong in society's norm. They suffer from daily teasing and put–downs
and from other kids because of what they physically look like. Their weight causes them to be
rejected from others as well as themselves. Having this happen day after day will lead to a feeling of
hopelessness and gradually leading to the early stages of depression. This is a serious turning point
because once one becomes depressed they tend to lose their sense of self efficacy. Then which

The purpose of this study is to examine between obesity and how it causes depression on adolescent
girls. LITERATURE REVIEW Childhood obesity has a huge impact on a child's physical
appearance and can result in additional psycho–social consequences, such as low self–esteem, social
alienation, and lack of self confidence (Doak & Visscher 2006). There is a great need for
understanding the risk factors along with possible health related concerns. The American Obesity
Association claims that, "Along with the rise in childhood obesity, there has been an increase in the
incidence and prevalence of medical conditions in children and adolescents that had been rare in the
past (American Obesity Association 2006)." These concerns just compound the psychological
implications of depression concerning children. Pediatricians and childhood obesity researchers are
reporting more frequent cases of obesity related diseases such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension
that once were considered adult conditions (American Obesity Association 2006). Also, overweight
and obesity can lead to adverse metabolic effects on blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides
(World Health Organization 2006). "Adolescence is an important period of development for both
depression and obesity. In the United States between 2002 and 2004, the occurrence of overweight
in 12 to 19–year–old individuals was 30.3% among females" (Liem 2008). Such findings indicate

depression and ill–founded fears". Depression has always been prevalent but as a society we haven't
always had, and still don't have, a complete understanding of it. The symptoms have seemed to
remain constant over time: perpetual sadness, lethargy, loss of interest, and self–harm. Depression or
melancholia was initially associated with possession by the devil and recognition of adolescent
depression was nonexistent. Early treatments included: shock therapy, beatings, starvation, special
diets, exercise, and natural remedies. Melancholia was also believed to be an "unchangeable
weakness of temperament", this lead to many affected people being institutionalized or shunned.
Fortunately, we have gained a much better understanding of depression and depression treatment.
We also understand that adolescent depression is a real epidemic that is having a massive impact on
our society and on the individuals who are suffering. More than 20% of teens are diagnosed with
depression and a large percent of adolescent depression goes undiagnosed. Adolescent depression
can be highly treatable when they receive competent care and support. Early efficacious treatment
can also prevent prevention in the future, improve

The Effects Of Depression And The Stress On Adolescents

  • 1. The Effects Of Depression And The Stress On Adolescents Abstract Stress on adolescents that is caused by school created pressures is a very controversial topic in today's society. They are required to have so much of their life figured out and achieve academic excellence or else they will be ruining their adult lives that they have not had much time to even think about. Such crucial responsibilities being given to them can cause the pressure to have both mental and physical effects on the adolescents. A lot more adolescents are feeling this stress than what most assume and are feeling their stress more intensely than adults. Some of the specifics that will be discussed are the mental effect of depression and the physical impact stress has on eating, exercise, and sleep patterns. An important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is more than just a topic of television shows, movies, or social media posts it is something that adolescents struggle to cope with everyday and if untreated it will leave long lasting impressions on their future development as an adult. Often times, parents just wanting the best for their children, end up doing more harm than good. Despite what parents may think school is a major influence on a student's mental and emotional well–being; while in theory it is supposed to be a safe haven of sorts, in practice it has been found to pile on unnecessary stressors for students causing their mental health to deteriorate. Causes of this stress Schooling itself is too general of a cause for why students are suffering from such drastic changes in their mental state. Students have reported that their main causes of stress in school are tests, getting good grades, completing homework, and managing time (i.e., APA, 2009; Conner, Pope, & Galloway, 2010; de Anda et al., 2000; Lohman & Jarvis, 2000). All of these concerns are what education systems enforce in efforts to increase the student's future productivity at the college level and in the working world. However, students are convinced that their whole purpose of living is to be a high test score or grade, be accepted it into decent colleges, and live comfortably in a never changing career status. • 3. Adolescent Depression Essay 5 Depression is a disease that afflicts the human psyche in such a way that the afflicted tend to act and react abnormally toward others and themselves. Adolescent depression is greatly under diagnosed, and leads to serious difficulties in school, and personal adjustment. The reason why depression is often overlooked in children is because children are not always able to express how they feel. Therefore, teachers should be trained in dealing with depressed youths, and to advise the parents of the child to seek professional treatment. School is the place where children spend most of their waking hours learning, socializing, and growing. A child needs to be mentally healthy in order to learn properly, and sometimes problems arise at home, with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Poor spellers (left hemisphere learning disability), practicing spelling for the spelling test, become increasingly dysphoric, anxious, and irritable as the school year progresses. The repeated attempts to preform language functions by these children stimulates poorly functioning in the left cerebral hemisphere which leads to dysfunction of the opposite right hemisphere areas which results in depressive symptoms (Fassler 125). These examples represent the interaction between environmental stress and cerebral dysfunction. Right hemisphere learning/ communication disorders are characterized by difficulties with social communication including social discomfort, dysprosody (difficulties understanding the gestures or speech tones of others), ordering problems (difficulties with sequencing, timing, and context), motor and social dyspraxias (clumsiness), Young people with right hemisphere learning communication disorders, during adolescence and adulthood, are at high risk for major depressive disorder often exacerbated by the inappropriate stress promoted by education directed at their communication difficulties. In many communities, the only kids who can access mental health services are those who are deeply disturbed. Therefore, kids are more likely to talk to a school–based counselor because it is cheaper, it can be anonymous, and it is right there for a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Problem Of Adolescent Depression Today, adolescent depression is a very significant problem. In most cases, depression is the leading cause of why adolescents tend to make rash decisions and cause problems to themselves and also for others. Emerging adulthood coincides with adolescents as it is a time of feeling in–between. A child is growing to become a teen, a teen is becoming a young adult, and the young adult is becoming an mature, independent adult. Throughout this time, there are many paths to choose from, hardships to overcome, decisions to make, and experiences to learn from. This can be the most stressful time in a persons life. All of these things contribute to adolescent stress, anxiety, and depression, which very much so, turns to drug–use, juvenile ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the time, parents do not understand that their children are suffering. Adolescents don't know how to express how they feel, and don't know how to handle things going on in their lives. Knowing these symptoms, and become more invested in your child, students, patients lives, this disease can be prevented before it gets worse. Many differences in symptoms and behavior occur between males and females with adolescent depression. For example, it had been found that females have stronger feelings of self–blame, guilt, distorted body image, etc. Because of these symptoms, females tend to become more open to troubles with their health as an outcome of their depression. Girls are more prone to crying a lot, and removing themselves from situations involving their close family and friends. Girls also may lose or gain weight due to feeling bad about themselves, or not paying attention to what they are eating. They often times lose sleep, or sleep too much. But, one of the most significantly worrisome things that these depressed adolescent girls do, is psychically hurting themselves, or becoming promiscuous in order to gain "self–worth". On the other hand, although males are less likely to be diagnosed than females, for the ones who are diagnosed, suicide is attempted more often and is successful. Young males with depression have a tendency to sleep a lot more. Males do not withdraw as much, as they are usually more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When children move towards adolescence, they become more involved with their peers. This is when teens begin to "discover" the world. This is when peer pressure comes into place. Not all peer pressure can be bad. Some can be pressuring others to do positive things with their lives. When parents hear about the peer pressure going on, they have an automatic reaction to it. • 9. Depression And Its Effects On Adolescent Depression Depression is an issue facing a large amount of people today. It has becoming increasingly known that a lot of depression begins to start in the adolescent years for many individuals. The social work profession is critical in helping this adolescent depression not lead to further depression in adulthood. To understand adolescent depression and what is needed to help people suffering from it, we need to further understand the prevalence of adolescent depression, the effects it has on teens socially, populations that are vulnerable to depression in adolescents, as well as what a social worker's role in assessing and treating adolescent depression is. Depression today seems to have become a synonym for sadness. Though many people with depression tend to struggle with sadness, it is in itself a mental health problem and not just your everyday unhappiness. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (2014), "Clinical depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for weeks or more" (Depression 2014 n.p.). This shows that depression goes from situational to clinical when it starts to affect your every day activity and not just your mood. Depression can occur in people of all ages but has a lot of negative effects on adolescents and their development. If a child, early in life, sees their mother or father dealing trying to cope with depression they may follow suit, exhibiting signs of sadness and dissociation at an early age. Depression, as we know, is a form of disorder that stems from internal and external unhappiness, and if shown these signs early in life a child may begin to believe that this is normal. This could lead to a lifelong struggle with depression or many other upsetting scenarios. The distressing rate of teenage depression could be due to vicarious conditioning, the exposure of a specific thing at an early age which leads to a mimicry of these emotions. The unstable balancing of hormones in the body can trigger the onset of depression. When neurotransmitters (natural brain chemicals) are impaired while carrying signals to other parts of the body, nerve systems and receptors can change which will cause depression. Environmental factors that can cause depression are factors of everyday life that bring stress and discomfort to the adolescent. The home life of an adolescent will determine the quality of life he has. Divorce, financial instability, dysfunctional family, lack of sleep, abuse, death, bulling, and school are just a few of the numerous environmental factors that can negatively impact the adolescents life leading to depression. However some studies suggest that there are no concrete ways to test serotonin in the brain so this theory has not been proven (Smith, Robinson, Segal and Ramsey 2014). Depression In Adolescents: A Case Study The concept of a happy childhood being a carefree, never–ending recess before the responsibilities of adulthood set in is just as realistic as the cartoons children watch on television. To the contrary, adolescents today feel less safe, less inspired and less hopeful than ever before. It is not surprising then that depression is a common concomitant to adolescent development (Tharper, Collishaw, & Pine, 2012). According to the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, the reason why depression is often over looked in children and adolescents is because "children are not always able to express how they feel" (Brown, Hammen, Craske & Wickens, 1995). In addition, depression among adolescents is difficult to diagnose because it is a developmental stage associated with rebellion and experimentation marked by emotional turmoil, mood swings, and heightened sensitivity. The prevailing misconceptions regarding children's mood and behavior detracts clinicians from properly diagnosing this widely prevalent child health issue (Brown et al., 1995). Thus, to recognize and treat this disorder is important. Depending on the clinician's diagnostic approach, lack of careful examination can lead to missed signs for clinical depression (Cole & Bird, 2000). An examination of the biomedical approach demonstrates why there is a lack of consideration by healthcare providers. First, the biomedical model characterizes diseases by biological determinants and explains disease as a condition caused by external pathogens or disorders in the functions of organs and body systems (Cole & Bird, 2000). Such an approach has proved effective in the control of widespread infectious diseases. However, now that non–infectious chronic illnesses predominate, the efficiency of the biomedical approach has not only become questionable but underlying economic justifications have been raised. Adolescents have been reported to spend on average six hours consuming media (Wallace). The point when an unhealthy amount of time is spent on social media is when negative social risks can begin to present themselves–children and adolescents, who are experience significant brain growth and development, are the most at risk for social damage. Depression is a disorder that disturbs mood, causes a loss of interest or pleasure in activities someone would normally enjoy, and makes an individual irritable. From the moment a child is born the connection and bond that they form with their caregiver can determine whether they will form healthy relationships with another individuals throughout their lifetime In my research proposal paper, I wish to examine the role of attachment exhibits in adolescent depression. Cultural values and traditions impact how an adolescent feels about themselves and their place in the world. In addition to being cautious about what language and vocabulary is used in self–esteem research, researchers should clearly define what aspect of self–esteem they are measuring. From my experience, peer pressure or fitting in, is the single most prevalent problem among adolescents today. This seems to be because the demands on today 's adolescents are more complex than they used to be for previous generations. Many of today 's youth fail to have a source of guidance and love, whether it is a family, role model, or even a group of friends. To help adolescents deal with peer pressure one could provide opportunities for success such as joining a group that encourage and value the individual. Another way to help the individual would be to focus on the positive by praising their accomplishments. Preparing adolescents with alternatives such as discussing ways to resist peer pressure and thinking for themselves are good ways to help them cope. When dealing with the topic of depression, many times it 's because the adolescent doesn 't fit in nor have any friends to help him/her with their problem. Peers are necessary for normal social development and can be an effective role model as well. In many cases, ones self concept is influenced by how he/she is viewed by their peers. • 57. The Dangers Of Adolescent Depression Adolescent depression is considered a mental and emotionally disorder that is on the rise among adolescents. Although this depression is treated the same medically as in adults, symptoms that adolescents suffer from manifest by a variety of different factors. "Peer pressure, sports, changing hormone levels, developing bodies, awkward tendencies, and a host of other factors can carry many ups and downs for teenagers. However, these ups and downs can be signs of depression." Unfortunately, it seems that early signs of depression in adolescents may continue to follow an individual into adulthood. According to the article "Low and Decreasing Self–Esteem during Adolescence Predict Adult Depression Two Decades Later" authors Steiger, Andrea E., Allemand, Mathias, Robins, Richard W., Fend, Helmut A argued that self–esteem is defined as an individual's overall interpretation of their worth. The article references a study done on global self–esteem in adolescent's interpretation in terms of physical appearance and academic intelligence. These two factors lie highly important for developing adolescents as they begin to establish relationships and inquire about academic goals and skills. It can be predicted that the higher level of self–esteem one has, more full filling personal and social life outcomes occur. For example, high self–esteem predicts "closeness in romantic relationships, better job performance, and academic achievement. . In comparison, low self–esteem can lead to ... • 59. Effects Of Depression On Children And Adolescents Introduction Depression is a significant problem for adolescents and one of the most common reasons that they seek mental health treatment. Depression is often brought on or worsened by experiencing negative life events such as bullying, abuse or neglect, parental divorce, and countless others. There are numerous treatment options for depression, but cognitive behavior therapy is one of the most widely used and heavily researched treatments for depression in children and adolescents. Adolescents who are depressed often interpret life's events in distorted and negative ways which can lead to engaging in maladaptive behaviors as a way of coping with life's stressors. CBT aims to bring awareness to clients about their irrational ways of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many adolescents go undiagnosed or do not receive treatment for their depression for several reasons. Some are fearful of the stigma that comes along with the diagnosis and some do not have access to treatment. "Common structural obstacles to mental health services include inconvenient appointment times, transportation difficulties, long waiting lists and prioritization of crisis work in secondary care settings" (Sclare et al., 2015). Those who do receive treatment often do so in school– based setting instead of in a clinical environment (Ruffolo and Fischer, 2009). Key Concepts of CBT Cognitive behavior therapy was developed as a treatment for depression by bringing awareness to and changing cognitive distortions in depressed clients. Albert Ellis believes that people contribute to their own psychological problems by the way they interpret life's events and situations. Often depressed people have negative views about themselves, the world and the future. These negative views are called the cognitive triad (Corey, 2013), which refers to clients seeing the worst in themselves by thinking that they are bad, the worst in the world by thinking the world is all bad, and the worst about the future by thinking that their future is doomed and hopeless so nothing but bad things will happen to them. Faulty thinking leads to maladaptive emotions and behaviors. Therapists who practice CBT help their client's change their maladaptive, negative and irrational ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. The Problem Of Adolescent Depression Adolescent Depression Depression a word we're familiar with especially when it comes to adults, we know adults get depress and we understand the reasons, with the high demands in life it's not uncommon to get lost in the shuffle. Depression in adult is something we have known for many years, but what has surprised many of us is that adolescents also get depressed. I myself still don't fully understand the reasons why or how this happens. I see it very often adolescent coming in to the ER because they are depressed and want to hurt themselves, and each and every single time I'm shock. What could be so bad in their lives that would make them think they have no way out? This is the reason why I choice this topic, I want to learn more of how this disease affects so many children and teens and what we can do to stop it. People used to believe that children had no reason to be depressed it wasn't till a few years ago: "No one thought that children could suffer from real depression; there wasn't even an official diagnosis for childhood depression until 1980" (Fassler 4). But really who would have thought that such a thing could be possible. Sadly today we know that it's a real disease and it affects more adolescents than we think: " The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that as many as 2.5 percent of all American youngsters under the age of eighteen or over 1.5 million children and adolescents are seriously depressed" (Fassler 2). ... • 65. Parental Depression And Its Effects On Children And... The researchers advance the scientific knowledge base by adding to the current knowledge, contributed to the theory, and met the qualifications for a valuable research (Capella, 2016). According to Reising et al., (2016), the study was to address parental depression, social economic status (SES), and community disadvantage for internal and external issues in children and adolescents. Also, taking to account that parental negligence is also a factor that is connected to the internal and external problems in children and adolescents. In addition, concurring to the previous research (Fear, et al., 2009) (Flynn & Rudolph 2011), (Lewis, Collishaw, Thapar, & Gordon, 2014), (McCarthy, Downes, & & Sherman), & (Sondheimer, MD, 2010), all came into ... With that said, approval was granted for the researchers to conduct the study and proceed with the analysis. The researchers (Reising, et al., 2013) demonstrated parents who suffered from depression as well as financial hardship did not have a great relationship with their children impacting their psychopathology internally and externally. Thus (Reising, et al., 2013) revealed there are countless children living in the United States surrounded by triggers that may direct them to apprehension, for instance, parents who have suffered or are still suffering from compulsive dejection, financial economic hardship, and parents who are neglectful are a few characteristics that can and may influence children and adolescent to stress leading them to behave in a manner that is not aligned with their community. • 67. Essay on Depression and Adolescents Depression and Adolescents Depression. Is depression possible in young adults? Not until recently doctors thought that kids were not prone to depression. They thought that depression was purely an "adult" disease. Nowadays, every doctor knows that a child could be depressed too. The causes of adolescent depression and treatment outcomes were explored in the article by Pat Wingert and Barbara Kantrowitz "Young and Depressed" that I will discuss. This article illustrates a couple of real–life stories of teenagers who faced depression and had to somehow deal with it. One of the teenagers, Brianne, described how she tried to kill herself because she was so depressed. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These therapy sessions have enabled many teenagers to finally focus on school and go on with their lives as any other kid in school. Still, there are many ongoing studies conducted by researchers who are trying to find much more effective treatments for depressed adolescents. The article also shows that depressed teens usually suffer for many years before they are identified. Even some adults who work with kids (teachers, coaches, pediatricians) can misread the signs of early depression. Even by professional doctors, those signs or symptoms are often mistaken for mononucleosis or chronic–fatigue syndrome. Also, finding the right help can be as difficult as identifying the kids who need help. Who are the kids at risk of becoming depressed? Studies show that there are many different factors that could put the child at a high risk of becoming depressed. In most cases, one of those factors is parental separation. Children seem to be torn when the family is undergoing such major changes as a divorce. A lot of times, parents don't notice that there is something wrong with their child because they are so preoccupied with what is going on in their own lives that they don't notice a gradual decline in their kid's grades and development of the anti–social or delinquent behavior in ... • 69. adolescent depression Essay Depression is a disease that afflicts the human psyche in such a way that the afflicted tend to act and react abnormally toward others and themselves. A child needs to be mentally healthy in order to learn properly, and sometimes problems arise at home, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children with ADHD are three times more likely to develop this insufficiency than others (Dixit 18). A depressed child may also have a conduct disorder, in which the child consistently violates rules that may be inappropriate for his or her age. Symptoms for this include bullying, stealing, lying, and being consistently disobedient (Fassler 66). Anxiety disorders affect adolescents as well as adults. The disorder may stop a child from participating in daily activities, and leave them feeling worried, withdrawn, and even restless. These children display overly clingy or needy behavior. Depression and learning disabilities have a strong link to each other. If the learning problem is not accurately detected, it snowballs up, and these negative experiences lead to emotional problems for the child thus, depression (Fassler 72). For example, if a child is having trouble learning grammar in elementary school and does not get any help, then later on in high school, the child may have trouble writing essays. Other underlying symptoms of depression are eating disorders, hyperactivity, and substance abuse. That is why teachers need to be able to identify and consult with the child and parents as soon as they notice a problem. For children, adolescents, and young adults with learning disabilities school can be an unpleasant and highly frustrating environment. • 71. Adolescent Depression In Catcher In The Rye Holden's history of family problems, including his brother's death and how he is neglected by his parents, his patterns of negative thinking, as well as his constant hope that he could one day run away from his life at home are clear indications that the mental illness Holden faces is adolescent depression. First, Holden's problems within his family caused him the distress that resulted in adolescent depression. Holden introduces his family conflicts, specifically negligence, by saying "you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me" (3). Family conflicts and relationship difficulties and having a dysfunctional family are complications and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A clear indication that someone is affected by depression is their will to leave their current situation by any possible means, usually resulting in running away or suicide. In Holden's case, he hopes to run away with someone, or alone if necessary. He first begs Sally to do so with him. He says to her, "We'll stay in these cabin camps and stuff like that till the dough runs out. Then, when the dough runs out, I could get a job somewhere and we could live somewhere with a brook and all and, later on, we could get married or something" (147). Holden's desperation to go far away from his home life is a risk factor of depression. In fact, desperation itself is one the symptoms associated with depression among teens. Holden doesn't stop with his hope of running away after Sally turns him down though. Later on, Holden decides that with no one else to run away with, he will leave by himself. He says his new idea is that he would "go down to the Holland Tunnel and bum a ride, and then I'd [he'd] bum another one, and another one, and another one, and in a few days I'd [he'd] be somewhere out West where it was very pretty and sunny and where nobody'd know me [him] and I'd [he'd] get a job" (218). It is impossible that a person would face that much despair and be open about it, yet not be depressed. Holden's loneliness contributed to his depression, as loneliness is a symptom, and therefore a cause of him wanting to run away from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Adolescent Obesity and Depression Essay Obesity causing depression on adolescents is an important topic because depressive symptoms are the beginning phase to depression. These young adults who are clinically obese feel like outsiders and do not feel like they belong in society's norm. They suffer from daily teasing and put–downs and from other kids because of what they physically look like. Their weight causes them to be rejected from others as well as themselves. Having this happen day after day will lead to a feeling of hopelessness and gradually leading to the early stages of depression. This is a serious turning point because once one becomes depressed they tend to lose their sense of self efficacy. Then which latently leads one to hurt their body even more through eating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of this study is to examine between obesity and how it causes depression on adolescent girls. LITERATURE REVIEW Childhood obesity has a huge impact on a child's physical appearance and can result in additional psycho–social consequences, such as low self–esteem, social alienation, and lack of self confidence (Doak & Visscher 2006). There is a great need for understanding the risk factors along with possible health related concerns. The American Obesity Association claims that, "Along with the rise in childhood obesity, there has been an increase in the incidence and prevalence of medical conditions in children and adolescents that had been rare in the past (American Obesity Association 2006)." These concerns just compound the psychological implications of depression concerning children. Pediatricians and childhood obesity researchers are reporting more frequent cases of obesity related diseases such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension that once were considered adult conditions (American Obesity Association 2006). Also, overweight and obesity can lead to adverse metabolic effects on blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides (World Health Organization 2006). "Adolescence is an important period of development for both depression and obesity. In the United States between 2002 and 2004, the occurrence of overweight in 12 to 19–year–old individuals was 30.3% among females" (Liem 2008). Such findings indicate that child and adolescent ... • 77. Treating And Understanding Adolescent Depression Mckayli Abbe Abnormal Child Psychology 10/23/2015 Treating and Understanding Adolescent Depression Introduction Before there was a name for depression, there was melancholia. Melancholia is an outdated term that was defined as "a mental condition marked by persistent depression and ill–founded fears". Depression has always been prevalent but as a society we haven't always had, and still don't have, a complete understanding of it. The symptoms have seemed to remain constant over time: perpetual sadness, lethargy, loss of interest, and self–harm. Depression or melancholia was initially associated with possession by the devil and recognition of adolescent depression was nonexistent. Early treatments included: shock therapy, beatings, starvation, special diets, exercise, and natural remedies. Melancholia was also believed to be an "unchangeable weakness of temperament", this lead to many affected people being institutionalized or shunned. Fortunately, we have gained a much better understanding of depression and depression treatment. We also understand that adolescent depression is a real epidemic that is having a massive impact on our society and on the individuals who are suffering. More than 20% of teens are diagnosed with depression and a large percent of adolescent depression goes undiagnosed. Adolescent depression can be highly treatable when they receive competent care and support. Early efficacious treatment can also prevent prevention in the future, improve ...
