Personal Statement On Elephants
I chose to put on my totem pole a elephant, a panther, a turkey, and a paint brush, because I believe
they represent me, and they symbolise who I am. The elephant represents Strength, power, affection,
loyalty, royalty, and wisdom. I am strong and I try to help people like when I carry things that my
parents can't and when my brother broke his leg I carried everything for him. I also represent
wisdom when I say things about the world that not many people my age know, and when I can think
deeply about things that other people can't understand. Like when I talked about the show "Cosmos"
with my friend Jack in Fifth grade. Another animal I chose to represent me was the panther. The
panther represents protection, hidden emotions, Introspection,

Saussure's Five Objects To Build-A-Bear
As we go on with our regular and daily routines, we pass by objects that are essential to us and our
environment. These assortment of objects are not only functional but represent ideas that channel to
our needs and wants. Throughout my day, I have encountered five objects that stand out to me. The
first object is lipstick. Because after I brush my teeth and dress up, I want to put on makeup. All my
lipsticks are shaped similarly with their black bullet–like container and adjustable rolling bottom.
Each of these colored sticks push out a different shade of red wax and each have different
consistencies of the product. The form of this beauty product is small, portable and full of pigment,
which relates to Saussure's idea of the signifier. Saussure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is fifteen years old and wears a red plaid sweater. It was given to me as a gift from the store
Build–a–Bear and is the original mascot of the store, which makes it easily recognizable and iconic.
The form of my teddy bear is familiar because it is a big brown bear covered faux fur with big
watery plastic eyes and a soothing smile. It is soft to the touch. Just looking at it brings you back to
your childhood and hugging it completely relieves you. The signifier of this toy is that it is a
caricatured and simplified version of brown bear made of materials such as plastic, fabric and
thread. It has no functional use. The signified form of my teddy bear is that although it serves no real
purpose, it is needed in my life because I believe it helps me sleep. This soft toy in the shape of a
brown bear is essential because it's a symbol of childhood and innocence. This idea of purity is often
hailed and celebrated through films, music, media and literature. In a form of a soft centered toy, it
symbolizes love, sympathy and celebration. The variety of teddy bears can be seen through history
and through shop windows, which show the depth of how common these toys have become in our
world. It's so common and constantly demanded that it has been an industry since the 20th century.
The teddy bear is a good design because of it's good image, it channels happiness and comfort to the

Personal Items that Defined My Culture Essay
While our parents offer themselves to help us grow as civilized human beings, one of the most
important things they do is present to us our culture. As a small child, my parents introduced me to
the world, and what a wonderful place it can or can't be. Different traditions were taught to me
throughout my years and these developed into the fundamental ideas for my lifestyle and culture.
The idea of culture that we all share is extremely complex, so it is hard to define any parts of it
without the use of symbolism. In order to define my culture, I selected three objects to represent me
and my culture in a broad spectrum. However odd these objects may seem, I chose an aluminum
ring, a computer and a Christmas stocking. These particular items ... Show more content on

In the modern day, we use technology to every benefit we can and I am not ashamed of that; my
opinion on the use of technology (specifically computers) is that in quantities of moderation,
technology can exponentially expand the growth of our civilization. For my second cultural object, I
chose my home computer because I can spend upwards of hours upon it each day, primarily doing
work or visiting recreational, social websites and games. The renowned scientist Carl Sagan once
said, "We've arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science
and technology." This quotation blatantly applies to modern day society, where it is nearly
impossible to communicate with people without an email or cell phone. The laptop is also an
immense part of my culture regarding schoolwork, where I need the laptop to access the websites
teachers use. With so many hours per day enveloped the laptop, it has grown to be a large part of my
daily routine and culture overall.
The final object I chose to describe my culture is my Christmas stocking. To me this stocking
represents my traditions and faith in an elegant little display. Within the first few months of my
birth, my parents had me Baptized as a Roman Catholic and that has been my faith ever since. We as
a family celebrate the story of Christmas every year with prayer and festivities to go along with our

What Does It Mean To Me Essay
Can your life be described with abstract ideas of everyday items? I can use objects and symbols to
represent me as person and my experiences throughout my life. With the description for three items
I can show you how i am a well rounded person and get to know a little about me to. The contents of
my "Me" bag include items such as: an apple, a flag, and a folder. I with explain to you how these
seemingly bland items represent me as a well rounded individual. One of the many items is an
apple, a symbol of health. Apples have been a used for decades in metaphors, nursery rhymes and
famous quotes as the image of health, such as "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". The apple has
many nutritious values like "regulating blood pressure and glucose levels", described in an article on

For me, the flag more specifically the flag of North Carolina because I was born and raised here is
considered "home". On the flag are 2 dates, the first is May 20th, 1775, which is the Mecklenburg
Declaration of Independence, the second is April 12th, 1776, the date of the Halifax Resolve,
documents that some believe put North Carolina "on the forefront of the American Independence
Movement" (Wikipedia, 3). With North Carolina's rich history of it's involvement in wars, and its
more memorable feats like being first in flight, and how it is a piedmont region that touches both the
ocean and the Great Smokey Mountains, it is by far my Favorite state. Whenever I come home from
a long day at school and sit down on my couch to write my ridiculously strenuous English essay,

Lord Of The Flies Rhetorical Analysis

Mr. Halter
Literary Style N–104

Every group of people has a leader, object or mantra that represents what the group needs or
treasures the most. This can be observed in the newest fashion trends that symbolize beauty and
sophistication to a group of teenage girls, the newest iPhone or tablet to symbolize wealth to a group
of rich businessmen, or even a flag to symbolize our nation. William Golding's novel, Lord of the
Flies explores this concept of giving a normal object great power by using it to convey an ideology
of a group of people. Golding describes a world where there is no civilization, and the only
connection to the civilized world is through the objects that represent different aspects of it. This

As Jack starts to form his own group, we see even more people straying from the belief of
civilization, the belief that order is even necessary. Golding writes "[Jack] And the conch doesn't
count on this end of the island"(150). This phrase suggests that the hunters have already abandoned
their previous ideals and instead turned to instant gratification rather than stability and safety. They
now achieve a feeling of security by hunting and killing aimlessly instead of clinging to reminders
of the outside world, such as the huts and meetings . Therefore, they are not affected by their old
ideals of civilization, represented by the conch, and do not need the conch because they have already
lost their ties with civilization, making the conch almost powerless. This passage implies that when
the ideas represented by an object become obsolete, the object's power is lost. This proves that it is
only the representation and people behind that object that makes it

Sacred Object In Religion
How does this sacred object as a material reality, make connections between the lived experiences of
believers and the sacred?
Good afternoon Ms Heyen and my fellow peers. Today I will be explaining how the Dharma Wheel,
my sacred object is a physical manifestation making connections between lived experienced for
believers and the sacred.
This sacred object, as a physical manifestation makes connections between the lived experience of
believers as it:
– Helps adherents pray
– Helps adherents use their body to create motivation and intention

The prayer wheel practice is visualized as a manifestation of the Body, Speech and Mind of the
Buddha. This makes connections between the lived experience of the sacred and believers, as they
are able to make connections with the buddha. With hands the prayer wheel is spun clockwise
because the mantra or prayer is written in the direction of the movement of the sun across the sky.
With speech, we recite one of the mantras in the prayer wheel. And with our mind, we engage in
visualizations or recitations, using our motivation and intention to bless all beings and bring peace to
our surroundings and the entire world.
The source shows An elderly Tibetan women holding a prayer wheel on the Lhasa's pilgrimage

the spiritual heart of the holy city and the main commercial district for Tibetans. This source helped

Quilt Definition
An object that represents home to me is a quilt hand sewn by my grandmother as it is an objectified
collective memory of home. This quilt may be a common domestic object that is seen in every
household, but to me, it is a powerful connection of the home, which reminds me of my family's
comfort, care and affection. Henceforth, Home is an objectified as a metaphorical embodiment of
memory and relationships with my family (Morley, 2000)
Home as a place of feminine of comfort and care
Quilting has been a kind of litmus test of traditional femininity that has been practiced by
generations of Chinese women to gift quilt to their daughters or granddaughters as an object that
signifies home, so my grandmother sewn a personalised quilt for me as a memorabilia.
In this feministic tradition, the fabric was carefully hand–picked, arranged and stitched deliberately
by my grandmother who is a figure of ghostly feminine of comfort, nourishes and cares (Morley
2000, 37) , who was always there giving me all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Theme Of Stockings In Death Of A Salesman
Those Damned Stockings!
"You didn't love her. You just didn't want to be alone. Or maybe, maybe she was good for your
ego...but you didn't love her. Because you don't destroy people you love"
–Grey's Anatomy
In Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, Miller uses many objects and events to represent bigger
ideas and themes to help ground the story and make it less confusing. Many of these objects could
represent multiple ideas within the story, and it is up to the reader to interpret what they believe the
objects represent. One such object is stockings. Miller uses Linda's stockings to represent her love
for Willy and how it is ripped and torn but mended just like fragile silk stockings. There is the odd
resistance Willy shows to her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
WILLY: I have no stockings here!
THE WOMAN: You had two boxes of size nine sheers for me, and I want them! WILLY: Here, for
God's sake, will you get outa here!
THE WOMAN (enters holding a box of stockings)"(Miller (FIND PAGE NUMBER)
The Woman wants Willy to show that he is willing to ignore Linda's care in order to be with her.
Miller represents this through the stockings. He gives the Woman countless of Linda's stockings,
and in that abandons Linda for another woman. He later regrets this and wants to deny it happened
and pretend he did nothing wrong. However he cannot change the fact that their relationship was
damaged because of his actions and he cannot take back what he did to Linda.
Linda is often seen repairing her expensive, silk stockings whenever there is something damaging to
their relationship hinted at or when she has a fight with Willy. One such example is after the long
scene with Willy's mistress:
" And thanks for the stockings. I love a lot of stockings...
(The Woman bursts out laughing, and Linda's laughter blends in. The Woman disappears into the
dark. Now the area at the kitchen table brightens. Linda is sitting where she was at the kitchen table,
but now is mending a pair of her silk stockings.) LINDA: You are, Willy. The handsomest man.
You've got no reason to feel that... WILLY (corning out of The Woman's dimming area and going
over to Linda):

David Lewis Ability Theory
If physicalism is true, Mary knows all there is to know, and hence her knowledge is complete. When
Mary steps out of the room and sees a red tomato, she learns about what it is like to see a red
tomato. Since Mary knows all the physical facts, what she learns outside the room is a
phenomenological feature of her visual experience, also known as qualia. Qualia, the subjective
experience, relate to sensations and emotions such as feeling exhausted due to a headache. An
example of qualia is what it is like for me to taste this specific type of candy at this moment. In
Mary's case, she learns what it is like to see the red tomato when she is outside of the room. The
world has a combination of non–physical and physical facts. Therefore, the theory of physicalism is
false as Frank Jackson's Knowledge Argument takes account of qualia which successfully targets
what physicalism lacks. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This objection attacks the claim that Mary learns a new fact. According to Lewis, new experience
gives an individual new ability. For instance, a person tasting Vegemite for the first time would
result in gaining the ability to remember the taste, to recognize the taste the next time he has
Vegemite, and to imagine that same taste. So, when Mary knows what it is like to see red, she gains
the ability to remember, to imagine, and to recognize. However, gaining a new ability is different
from gaining a new information. A new ability, moreover, doesn't have a phenomenal property.
Therefore, Mary didn't learn any new fact and the Knowledge Argument fails to refute

Seder Plate Analysis
A seder plate is is a special plate containing symbolic foods eaten or displayed at the Passover Seder.
The first object on the Seder Plate is the Charoset. It represents the mortar the Isrealites were forced
to use to build structures for the Egyptians. A way it applies to my life is that my mother used to
always make me accompany her to work and have me help her with the children or elderly she
watched. A food that may represent this event is Chitterlings. This is because , in my head they are
okay to watch other people eat. When it comes to me eating them there is a problem. The second
object on the Seder PLate is the Roasted Lamb Shankbone. It represents the tenth plague in Egypt,
when all first born egyptians were killed.Isrealites marked their door with lambs blood so God knew
who not to kill. They sacrificed a lamb to get the blood. A way it applies to my life is during the
school year I always have a lot of free time but, I also need to study. I have to sacrifice the free time

Analysis Of Queen By Audrey Flack
Queen, by Audrey Flack is a very captivating piece of artwork. It was painted in 1976, originally
Audrey Flack took a picture and then used it as the basis for this painting. Queen is a painting of box
that is full of special mementos. It has features such as a quarter of an open orange, a rose, a pocket
watch, a queen playing card, a locket of an older and a younger woman, lip balm, perfume, a chess
piece, blush, and a chain necklace with the letter "F" on it. The painting almost looks like a vanity
drawer or a keepsake drawer. However, realizing the fruits and flower in the painting I understood it
to be a collection of the artist's memories as opposed to a drawer. Audrey Flack was demonstrating
the many things that were significant to her while aging. Queen signifies the fight against time. It
shows that no matter what possessions you retain it will not keep you young. No one can win the
battle against time.
I am going to describe every element in the painting while analyzing every element as well. I will
show why I believe the objects and elements in the painting point towards my thesis of how the
Queen is expressing a fight against time. First off, the games. The card of queen and the chess piece
are both mementos from the artist's childhood, showing she grew up playing games. Something
significant about the queen playing card is its femininity. Why specifically the queen as opposed to
any other card? I think it addresses the phase the artist went through as a child

Duy Huynh’S Work Has Inspired People For Years And Is Known
Duy Huynh's work has inspired people for years and is known to make a lasting impression on
people at first glance. His inspiration mainly comes from ancient folklore and comic books. While
much of his work is deeply personal, his clever and often times humorous use of symbolism and
wordplay invites the viewer to create their own storyline. There is one painting from his collections
that stood out to me more than any other painting he did, it was called "Evening Echos". Evening
Echoes painting contains hidden meanings within the artwork to enhance the overall experience for
the person viewing the painting. His purpose for this painting to show the viewer the story behind

In came to this conclusion, by the way arranged the butterflies and having the trumpet the arranged
to be circular form. In addition, the moon also plays a key factor in the painting because it is
representing a cycle as well. The moon's cycle is to come up at night and go down in the morning. I
believe the women is kind of letting life past her by because she is standing in one position with her
eyes close to maybe indicate that she not making herself present during the process of the cycle. The
artist chose to highlight her, the trumpet, the moon, and the butterflies by lighting the background
surrounding them and also chose bright colors to color in the objects.
This painting contains a lot of key objects within it that helped express the moral of the painting.
One key element of the painting was the moon, the moon was used to represent a cycle, in my
opinion. The moon represents the passing of time and embodies its cycle. The moon has different
phrases throughout the years and its surface interchanges between light and dark. The light side I
believe represents immortality and source of light and hope during night time. The alternative side
of the moon represents the gorier side of the night. I believe that the moon in this picture, with
connection to the girl, that she experiencing source of hope or promise because the moon is
completely light.
The butterflies with the picture is follows along

Design By Robert Frost An Exam Essay
In the poem “Design'; by Robert Frost, the classic use of the color white, meaning
innocence and purity is turned around. Instead of giving this color to wholesome, pure objects he
gives them to objects that are the reverse, which are death, darkness and unholy objects.
When I read the poem “Design'; I got the feeling that the author did not feel the same as
I do about the color white. The first line talks about a fat white spider. This line contradicts the
reputation that spiders have. When I see a spider, fat or skinny, it is usually black. I hate spiders and
I would not give them the label as innocent or pure because spiders live in a dirty environment. By

Frost talks about the spider on a white heal–all holding up a dead white moth. A heal–all is a flower
traditionally known for its healing capabilities, but in this poem it is acting as a boxing ring for the
spider and the moth. The moth saw a white spider and figured he was of no harm to him. The spider
used his innocent mask to deceive the moth and then the moth being gullible, was pounced on by the
spider. The deceiving spider then held up the moth for the entire world to see. The moth is also
commonly thought of a gross bug, but they are not harmful. The innocent little moth was tricked and
it cost its life.
I feel that there is a deeper meaning in Frost’s poem. I think he is telling us that any
color can have any meaning. He refers to the spider as being “snow–dropped'; which
tells the readers that the spider is innocent. The innocence that this spider has is similar to the
innocence of a toddler who smacks his younger sibling and runs away and immediately begins to do
another activity. The toddler is trying to show that he or she was doing something else and was no
way involved with the incident that took place. The toddler is not doing this because he has a guilty
conscience but because he is trying to escape punishment. The idea behind the spider being white is
that the reader is supposed to look at it and think that that spider couldn’t have killed

Roger Scruton on Photography Essay
In Roger Scruton's Photography and Representation the author establishes the idea that ideal
photography is not art. In the same breath he says that ideal photography is not necessarily an idea
which photographers should strive, nor does it necessarily exist. Yet, he bases his argument upon the
ideal. In reviewing his paper, I'll take a look at why he painstakingly tries to make this distinction
between ideal painting and ideal photography. His argument is based upon the proposition that
photographs can only represent in a causal fashion, whereas painters create representational artwork
via intentional relations. Scruton manages to create a solid argument, but in the end I'll decide it is
not a fair assumption to say that photographs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only does this subject exist, but it appears essentially how it did in the photograph. There is an
intentional act involved (that of pressing the button to take the picture) but Scruton dismisses the
process as only beginning of a causal process. This means the appearance of the photo is not
interesting because of the photographers intention, but as a record of how an object or setting
looked. This seems to be a plausible view point. How does the inability of photography to represent
intentionally exclude it from being art?
Before laying out his argument for the photography not being able to represent, Scruton must
assume that an aesthetic interest is based upon the seeing of an image for what it is meant to
represent. In other words, Scruton is focusing primarily upon representational painting. In order to
consider it a representation, Scruton believes the artifact must be part of an intentional relation to
what they represent. Furthermore the object need not exist, i.e. they may be fiction. Scruton's
argument relies on the first point. A painting may represent something because the artist has done
something intentionally to represent it. For instance each brush stroke represents an intention as to
how the figure is going to be portrayed. Therefore paintings may be representations. Scruton gives
the example of looking at a picture of a warrior. He further supposes that while this painting
represents a warrior. He

Small Objects: a Literary Analysis of Lullabies for Little...
Small Objects:
A Literary Analysis of "Lullabies for Little Criminals"
In "Lullabies for Little Criminals," there are many small objects that are relevant to Baby's life.
Objects can have remarkably profound effects on a person's life, whether they are of sentimental
value or another form of personal meaning, they have an impact on us. An object can mean many
things to different people. An abandoned doll in a trash bin could be seen as old and ugly to an
average person, but to the person who originally owned the doll; it could have been particularly
special. In the novel, Heather O'Neil illustrates the effects of such objects on Baby and their

The gift is a pair of dainty knee–high socks. Baby wants nice things, and these socks were,
according to baby, "the first pretty things I'd ever owned" (O'Neill 155). This gift is exhilarating for
her. It is an acknowledgment from someone who believed she was attractive, especially coming
from Alphonse. According the others in the neighborhood, it was known that Alphonse only looked
out for good looking women, so if he took notice of someone, it meant something (O'Neill 148). It is
particularly clear to the reader that Alphonse likely has ulterior motives, but to baby Alphonse is
simply someone who likes her. The socks remind Baby that she is pretty, and she is proud of the fact
that an older man found her attractive. In turn, this causes baby to trust Alphonse and fall for his
manipulation, leading towards what could be a life of prostitution. The socks are symbolic of Baby
being forced into adulthood. Baby is still young and naive; she has no way of understanding what
Alphonse is attempting to do. Therefore, the socks may also represent Baby's vulnerability and lack
of ability to judge character. At this point in the novel, Baby has not had a proper childhood or even
learned any of what it means to be a teenage person, and now she is already being pushed into
adulthood. After Alphonse dies in the hotel room, Baby does not know what to do. She is lost

Lab Report On Solar System

Astronomy 1000–Section A
August 29, 2017
Lab Report 1–The Solar System During our first lab in Astronomy, we got to develop and perform a
hands–on experiment of the overall scale of our Solar System. We got to physically interact by
demonstrating and constructing a model of our Solar System by using a simple tool such as toilet
paper. Who knew? We used the toilet paper shown in the pictures as a visual representation to
illustrate the overall scale of the Solar System, to show the distance between each individual planet,
and to represent the distances of each planet from the Sun. We physically counted out each piece or
sheet of toilet paper to reach the destination of which the next or neighboring planet was from its
neighboring planet. We started with the Sun, then Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, until we finally reached our final planet, Neptune. We drew dots to represent each planet. In
our lab activity, we created and demonstrated a relative scale model to show how the planets are
aligned and the distance between each of them. We created this model, so that we could better
understand the overall sizes of each planet and the distances of each of the planets from the Sun.
First, we used the model distance formula, which is model distance=0.25 inches/1,391,900 km *
actual distance in km. We used this formula to calculate the distance in which each planet lies from
the Sun. We found the overall scale distance of each planet

how they believe that the opposites like man and women, life and death, define life. (PBS.org.). The
Pre–Columbian temple represents the rejection that she has to European traditions. She also has two
fertility dolls and their position represent the cycle of life and death. In my opinion she paints this
dolls to represent how she feels because she can't have babies. She also has a Skulls that represents
Mexican culture of death. "The skulls is in most of Frida's paintings. She painted because she has
been in the edge of death". I also think that she paint the skull because sometimes she wants to be
death. She was obsessed with her husband Diego Rivera but he didn't respect her feelings and he
cheat her several times. The flowers and the clouds represent the natural surrounding that Mexico
has. In contrast she represents the United Sates with machines, skyscrapers and smog that represents
to her that the nations is unfriendly and that the people that live there only think in work and made
money. I agree with her, although the people in Mexico don't earn sufficient money they care more
about their families. In contrast, Most of the people that live in the United States just think in work
and how to earn more money and forget about their family. Another Important detail is her dress on
the picture. The drees represents her culture and the proud that she feels for

A pattern of white lily appears on Clarissa' confine, with details that "the head of a white Lily snap

and the purity that has been taken away, which briefly conclude the tragedy that happened to
Clarissa. In addition, "A crowned Serpent, with its tail in its mouth, forming a ring, the emblem of
Eternity" (646) is also etched on the coffin. Since a circle has no beginning or an end, this shape
represents a philosophical idea of eternity. The way the snake bites its own tails reveals a concept of
"self–consumption"(82), as Maud Ellmann explains in The Hunger Artists (1993), "the snake could
stand for circulation, self–starvation, or imprisonment, all of which contribute to Clarissa's tragedy"

society Clarissa lives in objectifies women to trade for material goods and force them to develop to
fulfill their greed. In The Rape of Clarissa (1982), Terry Eagleton claims that "in this society death is

The Representational View Of Consciousness
(1) What is representationalism about consciousness? What are the pros and cons of
representationalism? Do you agree with this view or not? Why?
Introduction
This essay is on the representational view of consciousness, which is I admit one that I have had
great difficulties coming to terms with as a viewpoint. I can relate with functionalism defining
mental states as what they do but I agree they don't solve the hard problem of consciousness.
Representationalism seems to define the metal state or phenomenal property as what it represents.
This essay mainly looks at Chalmers article "The Representational Character of Experience" and his
view of impure representationalism, although his view seems to cover most objections, I don't find
that it accomplishes or approaches the hard problem of consciousness. That said it is worthwhile to
look at its view, discussing what it is, and problems that it has.
Properties
To understand representationalism, we start with what is a representation and how it relates to
properties.
In our everyday life we are very familiar with something representing another thing, from a word, a
descriptive paragraph to a visual picture or movie of an object. We don't say that it is the object; for
example: we don't say a picture of my dog actually is my dog. What we express is that it has
captured some of the attributes, it relative shape, hair style and colour, etc.
Does a photograph represent the object photographed? The photograph is a two

Schopenhauer Doctrine Of Transcendentalism
The Schopenhauer's doctrine of Transcendental Idealism states that the existence of the world as
representation is dependent on a subject and for that, there is no external world without a subject.
The purpose of this paper is to explain the Schopenhauer's doctrine of transcendental idealism. The
fundamental idea of Schopenhauer's transcendental idealism is that the external world –the world of
space, time, and causality –is dependent on a subject to perceive it. "World as a representation" is a
set of objects that are in relation to each other. Schopenhauer refers to the world as "my"
representation, which indicates that all things in the universe, including the earth, the stars, the
galaxies, are part of "my" representation, "my" mental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An object is a mental image for "me" which depends on a cognizing mind that he calls a subject.
Hence, the object cannot exist without the subject. The inseparable relation between the subject and
the object is how he rejects the materialism and idealism idea. By Schopenhauer denying the
existence of an external world independent of the subject, he is denying the existence of the world of
space, time, and causality both before and after the

Analysis Of The Metaphors Of The Heart By D B Henkel
The "Metaphors of the Heart" by D.B. Henkel is one piece I thought was art. This piece was a
massive heart, imbedded into a picture frame. There were objects inside to describe a person's loves
and what shapes them into who they are as a person like: food, a pillow, cards, clothes, and even
stiches. The artist made a contest involving his artwork, there were between 30–35 metaphors
represented in the heart. If you could find and identify all of them you won a gold heart locket
necklace. In this piece description, it said "Your heart is the monitor of all your life's experiences,
and it's never too late to try to change its look for the better" (Henkel). It seemed as if I could look at
this artwork for hours, trying to figure out what the meaning of each object was in the heart. On the
other hand, not all artwork stood out to me. There has to be certain criteria for the piece to be
interesting to me. Those areas of criteria are the size of the object, colors, and the overall message
with how it can relate to me on a personal level. For some people when they see shapes, they think
of it has art, but for me I can never really understand why they made it into an art submission. This
is why the size of the object and what that object is, is really important for me to understand. That
way it is also easier for me to remember, while looking at the other many pieces of artwork. This
piece of art was 86" in height and "63 in width (Henkel). With that saying, I will not be one to

Between The World And Me
Independent Reading Project Quarter Two: Between the World and Me
Summary
Inspired by James Baldwin's 1963 classic The Fire Next Time, Ta–Nehisi Coates' Between the
World and Me powerfully educates readers on what it means to be African American in the United
States today. It is formatted as a letter to his son, Samori, at the age of fifteen. It's intention being to
help him through navigate the world as a young African American male. He does this through
sharing personal experiences and analyzing current events, with regards to historical context. By
communicating his ideas in this format, he is uniquely able to more broadly depict the concept of
racism in America. Where both memoirs and textbooks fall short, Between the World and Me does
not.
Object 1– Dollar Bill (significant concept) The first object I chose is a one dollar bill. Currency
blatantly represents wealth, that which Coates describes as coming from the oppression of another. It
is also used as a form of payment, showing the price paid by 250 years of people born into slavery.

Sarah's Four Selves Essay
Sarah, in order to find her self–integration and identity completion, splits into her four selves that
she idealize as her good objects. She identifies with them in order to face her anxieties of the
persecutory object which is her black heritage. Kolin argues that "Sarah's four selves" represent "her
psychic family and her racial and sexual past, reflecting the sensibilities and tastes of this young
black woman" (38). Yet her choices of the figures that she aims to find identification with,
emphasize the fact that she does not fit in both worlds; the black and the white. Describing her by
her "idol", Sarah projects her ego in the figure of Queen Victoria. The Queen's figure represents
Sarah's deep need to be white. Sarah creates the figure of Queen Victoria to reflect the want to pass

We all know about time capsules, right? They've been portrayed in countless movies, T.V. series,

aren't made just for kicks. The purpose of time capsules is to give the future historians a peek of
what the past was like. An alternative motive behind a time capsule could be to give your
descendants something to remember you by. If asked to make a time capsule, with the latter purpose
in mind, I'd want to use three objects that have unmistakable meanings to me. These three objects
would be a picture of my closest friends and me, the soccer cleat correspondent to my right foot, and
my guitar pick necklace. In the first item, a picture, I would stand alongside Jonathan, Isaac, Lorissa,
Giovanishka, Cristian, and Tainarie, since, as of now, these six people are who I consider my closest

The Infinity Inside By Georg Cantor
Introduction
While perusing certain articles on the news–aggregator app Flipboard, I came across a blog post
from the Huffington Post entitled 'The Infinity Inside.' The compelling title gave way to an even
more intriguing body, which referred to infinity not in mathematical terms but as an abstract
principle that governs the universe. This encounter instigated a profound curiosity in me, spurring
me to investigate the concept of infinity further; after searching "how large is infinity" on the
Internet, I discovered a TedEd video exploring the central question 'How Big is Infinity?' This video
introduced me to the idea that there exist multiple forms of infinity, many of which are actually
larger than each other. This prompted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To define infinity, I will first explain the underlying logical framework of Cantor's Infinite Set
Theory. To prove the existence of multiple, larger infinities, I will work through Cantor's Theorem
of power sets. Through listing, I will also explore the different types of possible infinities and test
whether or not it is true that all mathematical objects can be arranged in sets.
Basic Concepts of Set Theory
Set theory is considered a fundamental basis of modern mathematics whose notions can be built
upon to form more complex areas of study. A set is simply a collection of objects . These objects are
called members or elements of the set and are governed by well–defined membership criteria. In
order to know whether or not an object belongs or does not belong to a set, there must be clear rules
that delineate which objects are acceptable for inclusion. For example, if we had a set of all prime
numbers, the number 4 could not belong to the set as it has more positive divisors than just 1 and
itself –– it violates the specific criteria for membership in the set.
There are two types of sets as defined by Georg Cantor: finite and infinite. A finite set is simply one
whose size, or cardinality, can be defined by a natural number. Cardinality describes the number of
elements contained in a set. The members of any set (finite or infinite) can be placed in a

Understood Objects of Symbolism in the Novel "Lord of the...
In every novel, an object may represent something other than what it actually is. Lord of the Flies of
by William Golding has several of these objects in it. An explanation for what objects hold symbolic
meaning is would be like how snow may represent delight and happiness for a child. These objects
also add side stories and add detail to the novel. Three objects that hold immense symbolic meaning
in Lord of the Flies are the beast, the conch, and the signal fire. To begin with, one object that holds
great symbolic meaning is the beast. When the beast is introduced into the novel, it strikes terror into

It also shows what the fear truly is. The beast represents the savage side of mankind and the fear it
strikes into people. Additionally, a different object that holds great symbolic meaning is the conch.
The conch is the lone object holding order within the island. When the conch is broken, the island
became a hectic mess. Jack and his followers became savage warriors who were willing to kill
anything that got into their way. Sadly, Roger is the only person ready to kill somebody. The conch
represents the island's rule system and order within the island, as well. Without either order or rules,
chaos is allowed into people's lives. As a result, without the conch, terror is released and Roger's
savage nature is permitted to do as it wishes. With the conch on the island, Roger's evil can be
prevented. Jack contributes to the chaos that occurs, as well. Without him, the island is under
Ralph's control and not split into two separate groups. In the novel it states, 'He held the conch
before his face and glanced round the mouth. "Then I'll give him the conch." " Conch?" "That's what
this shell's called. I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking."
"But–""Look–" "And he won't be interrupted, except by me." Jack was on his feet. "We'll have
rules!" he cried out excitedly. "Lots of rules! Then when anyone breaks 'em–"(33) This quote shows
Ralph setting the conch's importance into the story. Without this tiny passage,

Response To The Allegory Of The Cave
"Allegory of the Cave" Review Questions
An allegory is a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically
a moral or political one.
Plato is said to have placed his mentor, Socrates, in his place in the story. Therefore, Plato is having
a discussion wit one of his fellows known as Glaucon.
Plato describes the "prison" as a dark cave. In the cave are people chained in front of a walkway
facing the back wall of the cave. Behind the walkway, a large ball of fire casts shadows onto the
back wall of the cave. Plato is telling this story to compare this fable to the reality of ignorant people
being revealed to the truth.
The prisoners are chained and watching the shadows being displayed in front of them from the free
people on the walkway in front of the fire. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After being in the dark for so long, it was difficult to adjust. Once his eyes did adjust, the prisoner
could see that the objects were much more than what they shadows had portrayed. The prisoner is
then exposed to the outer world, outside the cave, and immediately thinks of how he feels terrible
for the other prisoners who are still in the cave. He realizes that they will not experience what he has
in this "new" world.
Anthony 2
6. The prisoners see the objects that were casting shadows for what they really are, the light, the
whole new world. They are exposed to a "new world" of truth because they were surrounded by
nothing but the wall with the shadows. Objects look more realistic and figurative and the light
overcomes them.
7. Glaucon responds to Plato through most of the writing in short, simplistic phrases that agree with
what he is saying. This allows for Plato to be seen as an influential and intelligent figure. At the end
of the story, Glaucon asks small questions, not to contradict his mentor, but to enhance the reader's
meaning of what Plato is

Symbolism In America
America, much comes to mind when this word is heard. Usually people think of things like hotdogs,
baseball games, even the red white and blue. While these objects represent American culture greatly,
I feel as if Donald Trump, fireworks, and Wal–Mart do a much better job. People may argue with

Donald Trump represents the average American citizen. Many speculate just how Trump got this far
in the 2016 election, but it doesn't surprise me. He is like any other older white man, a loud,
egotistical, bigot, who is very opinionated. The closed mindedness of Trump represents just how
most of Americans are stuck in their ways, and only looking out for themselves. Hopefully, good ol'
bigotry and misogyny can make America great again. Fireworks have been shot–off on the fourth of

What Does Fire Symbolize In Jane Eyre
Fire, the red room and the splintered chestnut tree are all very powerful and symbolic objects that

A candle is a very accurate representation of fire. I chose a candle as an object that represents Jane
because of the passion and fury that she demonstrates in the first stage of her life, at Gateshead. Fire
is symbolic of her emotions and how she truly feels. The following quotes will represent much of

Roman emperors!'.... 'Dear! dear! What fury to fly at master John!... Did ever anybody see such a
picture of passion!'" (pg 8). In this quote, Jane is exploding with anger at her cousin John Reed. She
is super mad at him and calls him "cruel and a "murderer". The way in which she goes off on him is

cycle of life. The lock represents time, and in the end.. Death. These sues of symbolism helped me
to understand the theme of no one escapes death. Poe used multiple characters as symbolism in "The
Masque of the Red Death." Prince Prospero was used to represent the arrogance of man. He had
figured that if he used enough money he could keep out the plague. The party guests also represent

Object To Me Research Paper
If someone was going to ask me how I would represent myself with four objects, I would probably
have to take a day or two to think about it. Since I've already done that, I am now going to explain
these four items to you. The things I chose, with difficulty, were a picture of me with three of my
brothers, a sketchbook I've been looking for for a while, my phone (a most prized possession) and a
mason jar filled with pretty trinkets. I think these would be the objects that would best describe me.
First, I have a picture of me with three of my brothers at the zoo in Indianapolis. That is one of the
few pictures where we are all smiling and posing. Normally, we're super chaotic. We play around
and yell and argue a lot. But somehow we all get along ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was very important to me, because some of my favorite drawings are in that book. When I found it
a while ago, I was ecstatic. Drawing brings out an artistic side in me that doesn't normally surface. It
also gives me an outlet to channel my ideas. I think creativity has given me a chance to express
myself and is a way to find who I am. The next thing I chose that represents me is my phone. It is
my connection to my friends and family and a world outside of where I am. It has several features
that were designed to help people with everyday life. My phone is one of the few things that manage
to stay consistent around me. It is very helpful to have around. A lot of children are getting phones at
younger and younger ages. I only got mine this year, so that makes me more careful and sensible
about it. The last thing that I selected to portray me is a jar full of pretty oddities and ornaments. I
believe this shows one of the most important things about me. In other words, it indicates my
organization and thought process, which seems practically nonexistent to most people, but I find a
lot of method to it. My room is usually like that jar on steroids. It makes no sense to whoever
stumbles upon it by accident, but it is easy to unravel when you see it all the time. I feel like this
represents the basics of me, as I

Personal Statement On Elephants

  • 1. Personal Statement On Elephants I chose to put on my totem pole a elephant, a panther, a turkey, and a paint brush, because I believe they represent me, and they symbolise who I am. The elephant represents Strength, power, affection, loyalty, royalty, and wisdom. I am strong and I try to help people like when I carry things that my parents can't and when my brother broke his leg I carried everything for him. I also represent wisdom when I say things about the world that not many people my age know, and when I can think deeply about things that other people can't understand. Like when I talked about the show "Cosmos" with my friend Jack in Fifth grade. Another animal I chose to represent me was the panther. The panther represents protection, hidden emotions, Introspection, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Saussure's Five Objects To Build-A-Bear As we go on with our regular and daily routines, we pass by objects that are essential to us and our environment. These assortment of objects are not only functional but represent ideas that channel to our needs and wants. Throughout my day, I have encountered five objects that stand out to me. The first object is lipstick. Because after I brush my teeth and dress up, I want to put on makeup. All my lipsticks are shaped similarly with their black bullet–like container and adjustable rolling bottom. Each of these colored sticks push out a different shade of red wax and each have different consistencies of the product. The form of this beauty product is small, portable and full of pigment, which relates to Saussure's idea of the signifier. Saussure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is fifteen years old and wears a red plaid sweater. It was given to me as a gift from the store Build–a–Bear and is the original mascot of the store, which makes it easily recognizable and iconic. The form of my teddy bear is familiar because it is a big brown bear covered faux fur with big watery plastic eyes and a soothing smile. It is soft to the touch. Just looking at it brings you back to your childhood and hugging it completely relieves you. The signifier of this toy is that it is a caricatured and simplified version of brown bear made of materials such as plastic, fabric and thread. It has no functional use. The signified form of my teddy bear is that although it serves no real purpose, it is needed in my life because I believe it helps me sleep. This soft toy in the shape of a brown bear is essential because it's a symbol of childhood and innocence. This idea of purity is often hailed and celebrated through films, music, media and literature. In a form of a soft centered toy, it symbolizes love, sympathy and celebration. The variety of teddy bears can be seen through history and through shop windows, which show the depth of how common these toys have become in our world. It's so common and constantly demanded that it has been an industry since the 20th century. The teddy bear is a good design because of it's good image, it channels happiness and comfort to the people who own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Personal Items that Defined My Culture Essay While our parents offer themselves to help us grow as civilized human beings, one of the most important things they do is present to us our culture. As a small child, my parents introduced me to the world, and what a wonderful place it can or can't be. Different traditions were taught to me throughout my years and these developed into the fundamental ideas for my lifestyle and culture. The idea of culture that we all share is extremely complex, so it is hard to define any parts of it without the use of symbolism. In order to define my culture, I selected three objects to represent me and my culture in a broad spectrum. However odd these objects may seem, I chose an aluminum ring, a computer and a Christmas stocking. These particular items ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the modern day, we use technology to every benefit we can and I am not ashamed of that; my opinion on the use of technology (specifically computers) is that in quantities of moderation, technology can exponentially expand the growth of our civilization. For my second cultural object, I chose my home computer because I can spend upwards of hours upon it each day, primarily doing work or visiting recreational, social websites and games. The renowned scientist Carl Sagan once said, "We've arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology." This quotation blatantly applies to modern day society, where it is nearly impossible to communicate with people without an email or cell phone. The laptop is also an immense part of my culture regarding schoolwork, where I need the laptop to access the websites teachers use. With so many hours per day enveloped the laptop, it has grown to be a large part of my daily routine and culture overall. The final object I chose to describe my culture is my Christmas stocking. To me this stocking represents my traditions and faith in an elegant little display. Within the first few months of my birth, my parents had me Baptized as a Roman Catholic and that has been my faith ever since. We as a family celebrate the story of Christmas every year with prayer and festivities to go along with our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. What Does It Mean To Me Essay Can your life be described with abstract ideas of everyday items? I can use objects and symbols to represent me as person and my experiences throughout my life. With the description for three items I can show you how i am a well rounded person and get to know a little about me to. The contents of my "Me" bag include items such as: an apple, a flag, and a folder. I with explain to you how these seemingly bland items represent me as a well rounded individual. One of the many items is an apple, a symbol of health. Apples have been a used for decades in metaphors, nursery rhymes and famous quotes as the image of health, such as "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". The apple has many nutritious values like "regulating blood pressure and glucose levels", described in an article on WHFoods (The World's Healthiest Foods, 1). For me, the flag more specifically the flag of North Carolina because I was born and raised here is considered "home". On the flag are 2 dates, the first is May 20th, 1775, which is the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, the second is April 12th, 1776, the date of the Halifax Resolve, documents that some believe put North Carolina "on the forefront of the American Independence Movement" (Wikipedia, 3). With North Carolina's rich history of it's involvement in wars, and its more memorable feats like being first in flight, and how it is a piedmont region that touches both the ocean and the Great Smokey Mountains, it is by far my Favorite state. Whenever I come home from a long day at school and sit down on my couch to write my ridiculously strenuous English essay, and I look up and see my North Carolina flag hanging over my bed and i just smile because I know i'm safe. • 9. Lord Of The Flies Rhetorical Analysis Xi 1 Grace Xi Mr. Halter Literary Style N–104 10/1/14 Every group of people has a leader, object or mantra that represents what the group needs or treasures the most. This can be observed in the newest fashion trends that symbolize beauty and sophistication to a group of teenage girls, the newest iPhone or tablet to symbolize wealth to a group of rich businessmen, or even a flag to symbolize our nation. William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies explores this concept of giving a normal object great power by using it to convey an ideology of a group of people. Golding describes a world where there is no civilization, and the only connection to the civilized world is through the objects that represent different aspects of it. This essay will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Jack starts to form his own group, we see even more people straying from the belief of civilization, the belief that order is even necessary. Golding writes "[Jack] And the conch doesn't count on this end of the island"(150). This phrase suggests that the hunters have already abandoned their previous ideals and instead turned to instant gratification rather than stability and safety. They now achieve a feeling of security by hunting and killing aimlessly instead of clinging to reminders of the outside world, such as the huts and meetings . Therefore, they are not affected by their old ideals of civilization, represented by the conch, and do not need the conch because they have already lost their ties with civilization, making the conch almost powerless. This passage implies that when the ideas represented by an object become obsolete, the object's power is lost. This proves that it is only the representation and people behind that object that makes it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Good afternoon Ms Heyen and my fellow peers. Today I will be explaining how the Dharma Wheel, my sacred object is a physical manifestation making connections between lived experienced for believers and the sacred. This sacred object, as a physical manifestation makes connections between the lived experience of believers as it: – Helps adherents pray – Helps adherents use their body to create motivation and intention – To help adherents of suffering and to bring about peace in every human living organism. The prayer wheel practice is visualized as a manifestation of the Body, Speech and Mind of the Buddha. This makes connections between the lived experience of the sacred and believers, as they are able to make connections with the buddha. With hands the prayer wheel is spun clockwise because the mantra or prayer is written in the direction of the movement of the sun across the sky. With speech, we recite one of the mantras in the prayer wheel. And with our mind, we engage in visualizations or recitations, using our motivation and intention to bless all beings and bring peace to our surroundings and the entire world. The source shows An elderly Tibetan women holding a prayer wheel on the Lhasa's pilgrimage circuit of Barkhor. The Barkhor, a quadrangle of streets that surrounds the Jokhang Temple, is both the spiritual heart of the holy city and the main commercial district for Tibetans. This quilt may be a common domestic object that is seen in every household, but to me, it is a powerful connection of the home, which reminds me of my family's comfort, care and affection. Henceforth, Home is an objectified as a metaphorical embodiment of memory and relationships with my family (Morley, 2000) Home as a place of feminine of comfort and care Quilting has been a kind of litmus test of traditional femininity that has been practiced by generations of Chinese women to gift quilt to their daughters or granddaughters as an object that signifies home, so my grandmother sewn a personalised quilt for me as a memorabilia. • 17. David Lewis Ability Theory If physicalism is true, Mary knows all there is to know, and hence her knowledge is complete. When Mary steps out of the room and sees a red tomato, she learns about what it is like to see a red tomato. Since Mary knows all the physical facts, what she learns outside the room is a phenomenological feature of her visual experience, also known as qualia. Qualia, the subjective experience, relate to sensations and emotions such as feeling exhausted due to a headache. An example of qualia is what it is like for me to taste this specific type of candy at this moment. In Mary's case, she learns what it is like to see the red tomato when she is outside of the room. The world has a combination of non–physical and physical facts. Therefore, the theory of physicalism is false as Frank Jackson's Knowledge Argument takes account of qualia which successfully targets what physicalism lacks. ... For instance, a person tasting Vegemite for the first time would result in gaining the ability to remember the taste, to recognize the taste the next time he has Vegemite, and to imagine that same taste. So, when Mary knows what it is like to see red, she gains the ability to remember, to imagine, and to recognize. However, gaining a new ability is different from gaining a new information. It was painted in 1976, originally Audrey Flack took a picture and then used it as the basis for this painting. Queen is a painting of box that is full of special mementos. It has features such as a quarter of an open orange, a rose, a pocket watch, a queen playing card, a locket of an older and a younger woman, lip balm, perfume, a chess piece, blush, and a chain necklace with the letter "F" on it. The painting almost looks like a vanity drawer or a keepsake drawer. However, realizing the fruits and flower in the painting I understood it to be a collection of the artist's memories as opposed to a drawer. Audrey Flack was demonstrating the many things that were significant to her while aging. Queen signifies the fight against time. It shows that no matter what possessions you retain it will not keep you young. No one can win the battle against time. I am going to describe every element in the painting while analyzing every element as well. I will show why I believe the objects and elements in the painting point towards my thesis of how the Queen is expressing a fight against time. First off, the games. The card of queen and the chess piece are both mementos from the artist's childhood, showing she grew up playing games. Something significant about the queen playing card is its femininity. Why specifically the queen as opposed to any other card? I think it addresses the phase the artist went through as a child ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Design By Robert Frost An Exam Essay In the poem “Design'; by Robert Frost, the classic use of the color white, meaning innocence and purity is turned around. Instead of giving this color to wholesome, pure objects he gives them to objects that are the reverse, which are death, darkness and unholy objects. When I read the poem “Design'; I got the feeling that the author did not feel the same as I do about the color white. The first line talks about a fat white spider. This line contradicts the reputation that spiders have. When I see a spider, fat or skinny, it is usually black. I hate spiders and I would not give them the label as innocent or pure because spiders live in a dirty environment. By ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frost talks about the spider on a white heal–all holding up a dead white moth. A heal–all is a flower traditionally known for its healing capabilities, but in this poem it is acting as a boxing ring for the spider and the moth. The moth saw a white spider and figured he was of no harm to him. The spider used his innocent mask to deceive the moth and then the moth being gullible, was pounced on by the spider. The deceiving spider then held up the moth for the entire world to see. The moth is also commonly thought of a gross bug, but they are not harmful. The innocent little moth was tricked and it cost its life. I feel that there is a deeper meaning in Frost’s poem. I think he is telling us that any color can have any meaning. He refers to the spider as being “snow–dropped'; which tells the readers that the spider is innocent. The innocence that this spider has is similar to the innocence of a toddler who smacks his younger sibling and runs away and immediately begins to do another activity. The toddler is trying to show that he or she was doing something else and was no way involved with the incident that took place. The toddler is not doing this because he has a guilty conscience but because he is trying to escape punishment. • 29. Roger Scruton on Photography Essay In Roger Scruton's Photography and Representation the author establishes the idea that ideal photography is not art. In the same breath he says that ideal photography is not necessarily an idea which photographers should strive, nor does it necessarily exist. Yet, he bases his argument upon the ideal. In reviewing his paper, I'll take a look at why he painstakingly tries to make this distinction between ideal painting and ideal photography. His argument is based upon the proposition that photographs can only represent in a causal fashion, whereas painters create representational artwork via intentional relations. Scruton manages to create a solid argument, but in the end I'll decide it is not a fair assumption to say that photographs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only does this subject exist, but it appears essentially how it did in the photograph. There is an intentional act involved (that of pressing the button to take the picture) but Scruton dismisses the process as only beginning of a causal process. This means the appearance of the photo is not interesting because of the photographers intention, but as a record of how an object or setting looked. This seems to be a plausible view point. How does the inability of photography to represent intentionally exclude it from being art? Before laying out his argument for the photography not being able to represent, Scruton must assume that an aesthetic interest is based upon the seeing of an image for what it is meant to represent. In other words, Scruton is focusing primarily upon representational painting. In order to consider it a representation, Scruton believes the artifact must be part of an intentional relation to what they represent. Furthermore the object need not exist, i.e. they may be fiction. Scruton's argument relies on the first point. A painting may represent something because the artist has done something intentionally to represent it. For instance each brush stroke represents an intention as to how the figure is going to be portrayed. Therefore paintings may be representations. Scruton gives the example of looking at a picture of a warrior. He further supposes that while this painting represents a warrior. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Small Objects: A Literary Analysis of "Lullabies for Little Criminals" In "Lullabies for Little Criminals," there are many small objects that are relevant to Baby's life. Objects can have remarkably profound effects on a person's life, whether they are of sentimental value or another form of personal meaning, they have an impact on us. An object can mean many things to different people. An abandoned doll in a trash bin could be seen as old and ugly to an average person, but to the person who originally owned the doll; it could have been particularly special. It is an acknowledgment from someone who believed she was attractive, especially coming from Alphonse. According the others in the neighborhood, it was known that Alphonse only looked out for good looking women, so if he took notice of someone, it meant something (O'Neill 148). It is particularly clear to the reader that Alphonse likely has ulterior motives, but to baby Alphonse is simply someone who likes her. The socks remind Baby that she is pretty, and she is proud of the fact that an older man found her attractive. In turn, this causes baby to trust Alphonse and fall for his manipulation, leading towards what could be a life of prostitution. The socks are symbolic of Baby being forced into adulthood. Baby is still young and naive; she has no way of understanding what Alphonse is attempting to do. Therefore, the socks may also represent Baby's vulnerability and lack of ability to judge character. We got to physically interact by demonstrating and constructing a model of our Solar System by using a simple tool such as toilet paper. Who knew? We used the toilet paper shown in the pictures as a visual representation to illustrate the overall scale of the Solar System, to show the distance between each individual planet, and to represent the distances of each planet from the Sun. We physically counted out each piece or sheet of toilet paper to reach the destination of which the next or neighboring planet was from its neighboring planet. We started with the Sun, then Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, until we finally reached our final planet, Neptune. We drew dots to represent each planet. In our lab activity, we created and demonstrated a relative scale model to show how the planets are aligned and the distance between each of them. We created this model, so that we could better understand the overall sizes of each planet and the distances of each of the planets from the Sun. First, we used the model distance formula, which is model distance=0.25 inches/1,391,900 km * actual distance in km. Introduction This essay is on the representational view of consciousness, which is I admit one that I have had great difficulties coming to terms with as a viewpoint. I can relate with functionalism defining mental states as what they do but I agree they don't solve the hard problem of consciousness. Representationalism seems to define the metal state or phenomenal property as what it represents. This essay mainly looks at Chalmers article "The Representational Character of Experience" and his view of impure representationalism, although his view seems to cover most objections, I don't find that it accomplishes or approaches the hard problem of consciousness. That said it is worthwhile to look at its view, discussing what it is, and problems that it has. Properties To understand representationalism, we start with what is a representation and how it relates to properties. In our everyday life we are very familiar with something representing another thing, from a word, a descriptive paragraph to a visual picture or movie of an object. We don't say that it is the object; for example: we don't say a picture of my dog actually is my dog. What we express is that it has captured some of the attributes, it relative shape, hair style and colour, etc. Does a photograph represent the object photographed? The photograph is a two ... There were objects inside to describe a person's loves and what shapes them into who they are as a person like: food, a pillow, cards, clothes, and even stiches. The artist made a contest involving his artwork, there were between 30–35 metaphors represented in the heart. If you could find and identify all of them you won a gold heart locket necklace. In this piece description, it said "Your heart is the monitor of all your life's experiences, and it's never too late to try to change its look for the better" (Henkel). It seemed as if I could look at this artwork for hours, trying to figure out what the meaning of each object was in the heart. On the other hand, not all artwork stood out to me. There has to be certain criteria for the piece to be interesting to me. Those areas of criteria are the size of the object, colors, and the overall message with how it can relate to me on a personal level. He does this through sharing personal experiences and analyzing current events, with regards to historical context. By communicating his ideas in this format, he is uniquely able to more broadly depict the concept of racism in America. Where both memoirs and textbooks fall short, Between the World and Me does not. Object 1– Dollar Bill (significant concept) The first object I chose is a one dollar bill. Currency blatantly represents wealth, that which Coates describes as coming from the oppression of another. It is also used as a form of payment, showing the price paid by 250 years of people born into slavery. Lastly, with George Washington inscribed on the front and "In God ... Statements like these tell you more than simply what happened, but why it happened and how it will impact or result in other events; they give valuable first hand perspective on the oppression of African Americans throughout our history, and the effects it has on their communities. The term "black–on–black crime" is used sporadically in media, depending on the source. • 55. Sarah's Four Selves Essay Sarah, in order to find her self–integration and identity completion, splits into her four selves that she idealize as her good objects. She identifies with them in order to face her anxieties of the persecutory object which is her black heritage. Kolin argues that "Sarah's four selves" represent "her psychic family and her racial and sexual past, reflecting the sensibilities and tastes of this young black woman" (38). Yet her choices of the figures that she aims to find identification with, emphasize the fact that she does not fit in both worlds; the black and the white. Describing her by her "idol", Sarah projects her ego in the figure of Queen Victoria. The Queen's figure represents Sarah's deep need to be white. Sarah creates the figure of Queen Victoria to reflect the want to pass white and to be powerful and well–known Queen Victoria. • 57. Time Capsule Research Paper We all know about time capsules, right? They've been portrayed in countless movies, T.V. series, and books, always with a grand burial and an even grander exhumation. However, time capsules aren't made just for kicks. The purpose of time capsules is to give the future historians a peek of what the past was like. An alternative motive behind a time capsule could be to give your descendants something to remember you by. If asked to make a time capsule, with the latter purpose in mind, I'd want to use three objects that have unmistakable meanings to me. These three objects would be a picture of my closest friends and me, the soccer cleat correspondent to my right foot, and my guitar pick necklace. In the first item, a picture, I would stand alongside Jonathan, Isaac, Lorissa, Giovanishka, Cristian, and Tainarie, since, as of now, these six people are who I consider my closest friends. This item would represent the appreciation and love I have towards them. I consider the picture a significant part of the time capsule since my friends are the people that never let me down. They pick me up when I'm morose and depressive, and they help me overcome my obstacles. I can always count on them, and the reciprocal also holds true. They dare me ... • 59. The Infinity Inside By Georg Cantor Introduction While perusing certain articles on the news–aggregator app Flipboard, I came across a blog post from the Huffington Post entitled 'The Infinity Inside.' The compelling title gave way to an even more intriguing body, which referred to infinity not in mathematical terms but as an abstract principle that governs the universe. This encounter instigated a profound curiosity in me, spurring me to investigate the concept of infinity further; after searching "how large is infinity" on the Internet, I discovered a TedEd video exploring the central question 'How Big is Infinity?' This video introduced me to the idea that there exist multiple forms of infinity, many of which are actually larger than each other. This prompted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To define infinity, I will first explain the underlying logical framework of Cantor's Infinite Set Theory. To prove the existence of multiple, larger infinities, I will work through Cantor's Theorem of power sets. Through listing, I will also explore the different types of possible infinities and test whether or not it is true that all mathematical objects can be arranged in sets. Basic Concepts of Set Theory Set theory is considered a fundamental basis of modern mathematics whose notions can be built upon to form more complex areas of study. A set is simply a collection of objects . These objects are called members or elements of the set and are governed by well–defined membership criteria. In order to know whether or not an object belongs or does not belong to a set, there must be clear rules that delineate which objects are acceptable for inclusion. For example, if we had a set of all prime numbers, the number 4 could not belong to the set as it has more positive divisors than just 1 and itself –– it violates the specific criteria for membership in the set. There are two types of sets as defined by Georg Cantor: finite and infinite. A finite set is simply one whose size, or cardinality, can be defined by a natural number. Cardinality describes the number of elements contained in a set. The members of any set (finite or infinite) can be placed in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lord of the Flies of by William Golding has several of these objects in it. An explanation for what objects hold symbolic meaning is would be like how snow may represent delight and happiness for a child. These objects also add side stories and add detail to the novel. Three objects that hold immense symbolic meaning in Lord of the Flies are the beast, the conch, and the signal fire. To begin with, one object that holds great symbolic meaning is the beast. When the beast is introduced into the novel, it strikes terror into numerous littluns and biguns, even if they refuse to admit it. The beast represents the savage side of mankind and the fear it strikes into people. Additionally, a different object that holds great symbolic meaning is the conch. The conch is the lone object holding order within the island. When the conch is broken, the island became a hectic mess. Jack and his followers became savage warriors who were willing to kill anything that got into their way. Sadly, Roger is the only person ready to kill somebody. The conch represents the island's rule system and order within the island, as well. Without either order or rules, chaos is allowed into people's lives. As a result, without the conch, terror is released and Roger's savage nature is permitted to do as it wishes. With the conch on the island, Roger's evil can be prevented. Jack contributes to the chaos that occurs, as well. Without him, the island is under Ralph's control and not split into two separate groups. In the novel it states, 'He held the conch before his face and glanced round the mouth. "Then I'll give him the conch." " Conch?" "That's what this shell's called. I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking." "But–""Look–" "And he won't be interrupted, except by me." Jack was on his feet. "We'll have rules!" he cried out excitedly. "Lots of rules! Then when anyone breaks 'em–"(33) This quote shows Ralph setting the conch's importance into the story. Without this tiny passage, ... • 63. Response To The Allegory Of The Cave "Allegory of the Cave" Review Questions An allegory is a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. Plato is said to have placed his mentor, Socrates, in his place in the story. Therefore, Plato is having a discussion wit one of his fellows known as Glaucon. Plato describes the "prison" as a dark cave. In the cave are people chained in front of a walkway facing the back wall of the cave. Behind the walkway, a large ball of fire casts shadows onto the back wall of the cave. Plato is telling this story to compare this fable to the reality of ignorant people being revealed to the truth. The prisoners are chained and watching the shadows being displayed in front of them from the free people on the walkway in front of the fire. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After being in the dark for so long, it was difficult to adjust. Once his eyes did adjust, the prisoner could see that the objects were much more than what they shadows had portrayed. He realizes that they will not experience what he has in this "new" world. Anthony 2 6. The prisoners see the objects that were casting shadows for what they really are, the light, the whole new world. They are exposed to a "new world" of truth because they were surrounded by nothing but the wall with the shadows. Objects look more realistic and figurative and the light overcomes them. 7. Glaucon responds to Plato through most of the writing in short, simplistic phrases that agree with what he is saying. This allows for Plato to be seen as an influential and intelligent figure. At the end of the story, Glaucon asks small questions, not to contradict his mentor, but to enhance the reader's meaning of what Plato is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While these objects represent American culture greatly, I feel as if Donald Trump, fireworks, and Wal–Mart do a much better job. People may argue with me, but these three items symbolize the core of America. The Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump represents the average American citizen. Many speculate just how Trump got this far in the 2016 election, but it doesn't surprise me. He is like any other older white man, a loud, egotistical, bigot, who is very opinionated. The closed mindedness of Trump represents just how most of Americans are stuck in their ways, and only looking out for themselves. Fireworks have been shot–off on the fourth of July for ages in America Not only are they a tradition, but a symbol of America as well. Fireworks are unnecessary, flashy, and big, like America. What Does Fire Symbolize In Jane Eyre Fire, the red room and the splintered chestnut tree are all very powerful and symbolic objects that play a big role in the story of Jane Eyre; and it also symbolizes Jane as a person who has many disadvantages in life. The following paragraphs will explain in detail why this objects represent Jane and how it all ties together as a story. A candle is a very accurate representation of fire. I chose a candle as an object that represents Jane because of the passion and fury that she demonstrates in the first stage of her life, at Gateshead. Fire is symbolic of her emotions and how she truly feels. The following quotes will represent much of her internal conflicts and her emotional issues. " 'Wicked and cruel!' I said. 'You are a like a murderer–you are like a slave driver–you are like the Roman emperors!'.... 'Dear! dear! What fury to fly at master John!... Did ever anybody see such a picture of passion!'" (pg 8).
