Biography Of Simon Christopher Riley Smith
1. Biography Of Simon Christopher Riley Smith
Johnathan Simon Christopher Riley–Smith BA, MA, PhD, LittD has been described as Britain's best
crusader historian . Born in England on June 27, 1938 he was educated at Eton College in Windsor
and Trinity College Cambridge. He has acquired four degrees over his lifetime: Bachelor of Arts in
1964, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in 1964 and his Doctor of Literature in 2001.
From 1964 – 1965, Professor Riley–Smith taught in the department of Medieval History at St.
Andrew's College Cambridge as an Assistant Lecturer. He became a Full–time Lecturer in 1966 and
worked there until 1972. From then until 1972 until 1978, Riley–Smith served on the History
Faculty at the University of Cambridge and also during that time he was a Fellow ... Show more

He said "I, however, believe, first of all, as a Catholic that there are absolutes but they elude us; and
the fact they elude us is part of our fallen condition." He is also a 'Nietzschean' meaning that he is a
supporter of the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche. In terms of the Crusades, Riley–Smith states in the
Preface of his book What Were the Crusades? Third Edition that he is a pluralist. Using the
definition of thought identified by Professor Giles Constable, Riley–Smith he says: "....the pluralists,
who maintain that an array of campaigns, preached as crusades and fought by men and women who
had taken crusade vows and enjoyed crusade privileges, were as authentic as those to or in aid of
Jerusalem, although many of them took place in other theatres of war."
Professor Riley–Smith has written, co–authored and edited many books throughout his life
including:
The Knights of St John in Jerusalem and Cyprus, c.1050–1310. 1967
Ayyubids, Mamlukes and Crusaders. 2 vols. Heffer, 1971

3. Elbert Frank Cox
Elbert Frank Cox was born December 5, 1895 in Evansville, Indiana He grew up with his parents,
maternal grandmother and two brothers. Elbert F. Cox was born and raised in a college town in a
racially mixed neighborhood, but at segregated schools. In fact, his father, a school principal, had
graduated from Evansville College and had done graduate work at Indiana University. Raised in a
close knit and religious family, Cox learned the importance of education and fostered a talent in
mathematics. During his life, he overcame various difficulties which arose because of racism. When
young Elbert demonstrated unusual ability in high school mathematics and physics, he was directed
toward Indiana University. With all the separation and hardship and strife around him at the time it
inspired him to strive for a better education. At high school Elbert showed talents which made his
choice of career a difficult one. He was a talented violinist but also showed remarkable talents in
mathematics and physics. Cox was awarded a music scholarship which would have enabled him to
travel to Europe to study at the Prague Conservatory of Music. His love of mathematics won and he
entered Indiana University.

While Cox did not live to see the inauguration of the Ph.D. program at Howard, it is believed by
many that Cox did much to make it possible. Cox helped to build up the department to the point that
the Ph.D. program became a practical next step. He gave the department a great deal of credibility;
primarily because of this personal prestige as a mathematician, as being the first Black to receive a
Ph.D. in mathematics, because of the nature and kinds of appointments to the faculty that were made
while he chaired the Department, and because of the kinds of students that he attracted to Howard to

5. The Importance Of Academic Success In College
There is no other place in the world like college. Although only a few people are able to take on the
phenomenal experience, not all are able to successfully finish. There is probably no other period of
time where students will have more choices, more free time, and as wide a range of activities while
also having to remain focused in their classes. In The Freshman Year At An HBCU, Kelly DeLong
documents the lives of college students attending a HBCU to explain their expectations and
accomplishments, as well as their failures and conflicts during their freshman year. The book
provides a guide for freshman readers on what to do and what not to do by revealing the mistakes
and successes of the college students interviewed. Freshman readers should be able to relate,
respond and learn from each interview in their own specific way to understand how to reach
academic success. In order to ensure academic success in college, students must manage their time
effectively, choose their friends wisely, and communicate with professors regularly. Each topic is
important because they will lead to success in the classroom, a social life and getting through a long
first–year. Managing time correctly is the first step to succeeding in college for freshmen students.
Often, students become overwhelmed with work because they are not shown how to correctly
manage their time. Whether students are too busy working a job, playing a sport, partying, or any
other outside activities; none should come

7. Importance Of Experiential Teaching
Experiential Teaching – Why
I vividly remember and most appreciate professors that connected theoretical content of a lecture to
their daily practices and experiences. Professors that shared experiential knowledge, allowed me to
gain deeper understanding of the content and practical applications. This combination allowed me to
quickly implement new practices in my classroom early in my teaching career and tools early in my
management career. I hope to be a higher education educator who makes experiential connections
and adds a practical dimension to my classes through the incorporation of real–world experiences. I
believe this will allow future teachers to walk away with practical tools and knowledge to better
provide students with a 21st century education. Providing experiential and theoretical knowledge
will support teachers' professional and academic growth by increasing their overall knowledge.
Great teachers are the primary resources for improving instruction and preparing students for the
future (Sa, 1997). Students that have access to quality teachers and innovators, stand a greater
chance at competing in the workforces and positively impacting their communities (Peske &
Haycock, 2006). To position our current and future educators for success, professors that can create
deep and meaningful connections with their students stand a greater chance of successfully
positioning our educators (Bers, 2007). This need for practical professors fuels my desire to share

9. Persuasive Essay
Persuasive Rough Draft Essay
In recent discussions of trigger warnings–"alerts that professors are expected to issue if something in
a course might cause a strong emotional response", is a controversial issue that has been whether
trigger warnings at colleges/universities should be issued to students who wish to be alerted on
unappealing subjects or to not have trigger warnings from being practiced in American Universities.
On the other hand, some argue that trigger warnings are necessary to keep students from emotional
outbreaks in schoolrooms; however, others argue that trigger warnings are not useful and simply
prevent students from acknowledging a true understanding of reality. My own view is that trigger
warnings are not necessary to be practiced in American Universities, considering how this warning
prevents students from developing their intellectual essentials. Trigger warnings do not encourage or
nurture intellectual discussions in college classrooms and in reality prevent the student from gaining
the necessary knowledge and critical thinking he/she will need to succeed academically in a
workplace.
Trigger warning at American Universities do not encourage students to participate in intellectual
discussion, therefore stopping the professors from teaching vital information. A student who is
sensitive to ideas, notions, and discussions will enter a college class that will prevent them from
obtaining necessary knowledge. According to the On the Repression of free

13. High School Teachers Vs College Professors
When people think of high school teachers and college professors they think of them doing
essentially the same thing. They offer education. They do perform similar tasks, but the way they go
about these tasks can often be very different. While high school teachers help students build a solid
foundation of knowledge, college professors focus more on taking that foundation and making it
stronger by using the same fundamentals as high school teachers but adopting more challenge and
depth into their courses. High school teachers and college professors assign the same tasks such as
giving homework, quizzes and tests but they also differ by their expectations. Though no teacher or
instructor is the same, college classes and high school classes do tend to have a lot in common.
Compared to high school teachers, college professors conduct their classes very much in the same
way. However, they also use different tactics to make the information stick with the students. A high
school teacher may write down the critical information on a board ultimately telling you what to put
into notes. In contrast, a college professor may lecture nonstop to the class, expecting the students to
determine the important information. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
High school teachers have a reputation to be more lenient to their students. On the other hand, a
college professor will rarely listen to excuses or withhold the consequences of failure. Students
know what they signed up for when applying for college courses and college professors treat them
as such. At the same time, college professors are people just like high school teachers and
understand that life happens sometimes. This is why it is important for teachers and professors alike

15. College Professor Research Paper
There are all types of relationships when you start attending college, but the most essential one is
your relationship with your professor. There are certain advantages to building a good relationship
with a professor during college.
To begin, building a good rapport with your professors allow you to gain coursework assistance. As
a student it is your responsibility to keep up with your grades and complete each assignment;
although if you are stuck, who better to help you than your professor? Aside from providing you
with an education on their field of expertise they will also become a gateway to many other
resources such as tutoring and resource labs. Your professor had the knowledge and experience in
their field, therefore they may offer tutoring sessions. If you need the help, you should consider
going to tutoring because it gives you a better understanding of the subject.
Aside from coursework assistance, establishing an academic relationship with a professor can
provide students with a possible lifelong mentor. A mentor acts as an outside force in guiding you
out of your comfort zone and in extending your limits. Although most mentors have different
established relationships with their mentee, the purpose is the same. Mentors see their mentee's

They are beneficial when it comes to writing recommendation letters, giving career advice and also
may help structure a professional network. Recommendation from professors are valuable when
going on to graduate schools, applying for jobs or a professional organization. If students are in need
of career advice they may ask a professor for guidance. For example, nursing students could ask
their biology professor for assistance/guidance since they're more likely to have connection in that
career path. Well respected professors have high influences that can open opportunities when

17. Tough College Professors
We all have professors, the one that gives us a C average after busting our brain to write a five– page
essay; one that gives challenging projects to complete or the one that gives you challenging math
problems. On the other hand, we got the one that gives easy tests. Some teachers a lenient with
grading, for instance, I had an English teacher that would give us only good grades when we write
longer papers. At its best to stay away from the easy professors because knowing the material and
understanding it is important. A world–renowned professor at my college offers a class that all other
students say is the most insightful and brilliant on campus. However, the professor is a notoriously
hard grader. Even though the professor is a hard grader, understanding what I've learnt would be
more beneficial regarding to my studies.
Tough college professors help us to improve and understand clearly what we learn. It's not all about
passing the class instead it's about learning the material and knowing how to implement it in our
daily lives. For instance, students tend to say that they're not going to use any of what they do in
math in the outside world, having not realize that they use math everyday. I had a math teacher that

it as a joke. We tend to avoid the critical thinking classes because we're afraid of not passing these

They talk to one another while laughing; smiling and they interact with one another in a very casual,

jokes that I heard and remembered sounds like this, "What did the red light say to the green light?"
"Don't look, I am changing!" Then all of them burst into laughter and one of the males in the group

23. A Blended Future Of Technology
Geoffrey Tibbs
Dr. Dimock
EN 140–07
12 February 2016
A Blended Future Technology in education is not a new concept, especially at the college level.
Universities are encouraged to offer online courses, or as freelance journalist Chrissie Long and
many other experts call them, MOOCs (massive online open courses), to reach out to more students
and provide them with a more convenient style of learning (455). While MOOCs certainly have
their strengths, how far should universities go? What is the future of online education? Should
colleges of the future only offer online courses, or should face–to–face classes still be the primary
form of education? Blended courses, though not without faults of their own, can combine the best
elements of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because the lectures are outside of class, there is more time for discussion and clarification. The
lectures in strictly face–to–face courses are presented in class, so there is not usually enough time
for in–depth discussions. MOOCs are entirely online, so there is no meeting for discussion. Blended
courses do meet and have time for discussions, but there are some drawbacks as well. For example,
if a student has a question that he or she cannot find the answer to, the student will have to wait until
the next in–class meeting or email the professor to get the answer. In face–to–face classes, the
student could ask the professor immediately, but a student in a blended course would still be able to
eventually ask the professor in person, which is an advantage over a MOOC. Even though face–to–
face classes have more access to professors, and MOOCs do not require the student to come to
campus, blended courses remain beneficial to students because they provide more time for
discussions and clarification than other types of classes. Aside from more in–class discussion,
blended courses also allow students to set their own paces. In an article for U.S. News & World
Report, author Jordan Friedman mentioned a 2011 Kaplan Inc. research review that said "blended
learning programs can potentially offer more personalized, student–focused and flexible forms

25. The Culture Of China Has Deeply Ingrained
The culture of China has deeply engrained commitment to learning its citizenry by placing high
meaning on book learning and formal education than other civilizations. Education in china was
placed as a path to government career since they were determined to bureaucratic appointment, a
path to prestige and authority by eligible men of humble birth to rise to the top. This is unlike the
US because leaders wished to develop well rounded citizens but there were others who advocated
for more practical goals of learning modern science and technology to reform the country in
countering western imperialism (Mohrman, Geng, & Wang, 2011). Attaining the status of a
Professor one must sustain a distinguished track record of scholarly achievement within one
university and academic discipline to be promoted from an associate professor. The position of
professor is usually tenured but not for private and church affiliated institutions (BISO, 2010). The
status of a professor is the highest of the standard academic ranks with advancement past the rank of
professor involves administrative duties. There is no mandatory retirement age in this occupation
and full professor in the US is around 55 years with only few people attains the position before
attaining that age. Full professor earn on average 70% more than the associate professor in the same
institution but those in private institutions earn less (Kim, 2012). Promotion of professors comes
with increased administrative responsibilities

27. Rhetorical Analysis : Inventing The University
The rhetorical situation is defined as the context of a rhetorical event that consists of an issue, an
audience, and a set of restraints. While this may be true, there are many interpretations and versions
of these situations. In David Bartholomae's text, "Inventing the University," he explains the situation
of college students learning to fit the requirements of their college professors. Another author named
Kevin Davis formulated an essay titled, "Does Coming to College Mean Becoming Someone New,"
explores a similar situation of university students in terms of their commitments and changes they
make to succeed in college. Bartholomae's rhetorical situation is persuading college professors to
understand that students have a problem with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This could easily be seen as a negligible problem, but the authors could feel otherwise. A question
that comes to mind when analyzing these writings is, "what kind of discourse does each writing
piece fall into?" Discourse can be separated into three categories. Which are judicial, deliberative,
and epideictic. Bartholomae uses epideictic discourse as well as deliberative discourse throughout
his writing. He says, "He has to invent the university by assembling and mimicking its language"
(45). Davis shares a similar concept as Bartholomae, by stating, "They wanted me to make their
sense of the literature, to understand the texts as they understood them...I also had to learn a
particular way of reading and writing" (80). Both men have the same idea with current academia,
but they are on opposite sides. Bartholomae believes that while writing in unfamiliar ways, students
learn to become expert writers with practice. Davis explains the same scenario but believes that
change isn't necessarily needed, and certain changes made by students could be devastating in their
lives. When analyzing the discourse made by these two authors, it is apparent that both Bartholomae
and Davis are speaking from an epideictic and deliberative standpoint. They speak on a current issue
that students are having and discuss ways to attack this problem in the future with examples. Since

29. The Culture Of American Culture In The American College...
In America culture children are told if they do what they are supposed to do, no more no less, they
will get what they want in life. That everything in life is easy and fair to people. This new generation
has been called Millennials. Millennials are people who were born between the years 1982–2000
(United States Census Bureau). And from these ideas in American culture nowadays colleges have
been changing in the last hundred years. The term "coddling" has been used to describe this trend in
American college culture (Lukianoff and Haidt). By definition coddling means to treat in an
indulgent or overprotective way, which is what has exactly been happening on college campuses
across America (Lukianoff and Haidt). But before I go into too much detail about the coddling we
must first understand the history of college culture. College culture is the combination of language,
behavior, values, and philosophy that are part of a college's environment. It's the unspoken rules,
that college students learn from to fit into college life. College cultures can differ from campus to
campus, but there are some similarities between them all. To understand the influence of college
culture is a very complex matter. Students experience many cultural currents, some of which may
conflict with each other. To add people, pay attention to different things in their environment and
may understand the same experiences differently. For that reason, many aspects of campus culture
will have different

33. How Can Someone Live Off Of Minimum Wage?
How can someone live off of minimum wage? Well most professors in today's educational system
do live off of part time minimum wage. Some of these professors have devoted their time and
money to acquire a degree in the category they want to teach but, universities still pay them little to
none. Even though this is a direct from saving money it also helps in helping giving many students
services, and also scholarships in order to help pay for college. But, this problem has been around
since 1998 and, since then these professors have been treated unfairly in amount of money they are
paid to teach. The most significant causes fro the rising number of adjunct professor are the
competition among colleges and the state budget cuts on education. In todays society universities
seem to only worry about where they sit on the ranking list amongst other universities. According to
Nicolaus Mills the means of a higher education "lies in the commitment of colleges and universities
have made to winning the rating war" (Par 4). This shows how university now value a higher
education upon where a university sits on the ranking list instead of the prestigious education that
they offer. With universities fighting to become number one on the list most of them have decided to
"increase spending for student services that on a percentage basis outpace their increases in
academic instruction" (Mills Par.9) This claims that the raise of universities spending money on

37. The Universities Of Higher Education
The U.S institutions of higher education around the world have many different and unique ways of
educating their students. The students inside these classrooms often apply techniques used by peers
to better help their understanding of the world around them. Students should ultimately be more
enlightened when they finish at a college or university then when they started. These skills that they
learn at higher education places should leave these people educated to their fullest potential when
they leave, and should leave them with certain skills and abilities that all educated people should
posses. Professors, along with universities, should be able to persuade or change a student's core
beliefs by intriguingly adding insight to ones life and ultimately making them more educated. There
are certain skills and abilities that every educated person should posses after college. The first
attribute, would be listening and hearing what others have to say on certain subjects, which seems
simple but is a crucial step. Educated people work hard to hear what others have to say. If a person
hears what you have to say, and gives you specific feedback that you may not have otherwise heard,
had you not been open to listening, then this in part allows you to become more educated. If a
person feels like others are listening to him/her it will give that person a sense that what she/he is
saying is noteworthy, which will encourage the person to continue to talk to others and

the validity of the professor's strike against the use of technology in the classroom. To call attention
to the importance of the debated issue, the author opens with a shocking narrative about a professor
hearing a phone ring during a class and then destroying the cellphone by, unabashedly, smashing it
with a hammer (Freedman par. 2). This dramatic demonstration appalled the students and allowed
Professor Ali Nazemi the opportunity to show the students how adamant he was about the policy
against phones in class and what lengths he would go to adhere to the policy. The author goes on to
explain that the elder generation sees technology as a way to communicate and gather useful
information. In contrast, the younger generation views technology as a way of endless entertainment
and self–gratification (Freedman par 11). The reader sees the two opposing views collide in the
classroom with the professors beginning to feel as if they must entertain the students in order to gain
their attention, but the

41. Scholarship Essay: To Be a History Professor
Did you know that during the American Revolution when the American colonists were at war with
the British the chance of the colonists of winning were like modern–day America going up against
an American tribe? This is why I love History. With History, I am able to find out how the colonists
beat such tremendous odds. I have been around colleges all my life. I love the atmosphere of
colleges. Ever since I was little, I wanted to be a Professor. At the time, I didn't know in what
subject, but I did still set my mind to be a college professor. Now that I am older, I have shortened
my list to History. With History, there is always something new to learn. If it's from 1600 Europe or
the Revolutionary War, there is always something new that I can learn from the subjects. The most
major contest I have won for history was when I was in the 8th grade (Which was only a year ago). I
got a letter in the mail stating that I was a one of the select few that got the opportunity to show my
knowledge in History. I was chosen because my AP History teacher sent in one of my essays. The
test was a 100 question test of the major events from the American Revolution to the Civil War. It
asked questions like: Who founded the first colony in Georgia? (James Oglethorpe in 1733), or who
was the editor of the abolitionists paper, The Liberator? (William Lloyd Garrison). We also had to
take a Map, Charts and Graphing skills test, which would later average up with my

43. College Professors Essay
College Professors
The first day of class for a college student is like drawing cards in a poker game. Just as the cards
that one receives determines their outcome in poker, the types of professors a student gets on the
first day will determine the success of their year. The difference between a helpful and a harmful
professor can easily result in a much lower grade. College professors have a wide range of
personalities and backgrounds. However, professors fall into one of 3 categories: helpful, malicious,
or uncaring.
One type of professor in the college system is the helpful professor. This professor can be
recognized right away by their smile and joyfulness in the classroom. These professors give upbeat

This professor has a sour attitude toward life in general; therefore they want the students to be
miserable as well. Their lectures are never to the point and usually stray off to make some negative
point about life. They encourage students to ask questions, but only so that they can make the person
with the question feel incompetent for asking it. They are willing to talk with a student after class,
but unlike the helpful professor, the malicious professor is only there to criticize. They will
emphasize the student's faults but never point out their strengths, thus lowering the self–esteem of
the student. The tests given by the malicious professor are vague, full of trickery, and composed of
the most difficult material. These tests are not designed to survey the student's knowledge of the
subject, but rather to trip them up and make them fail. If one works really hard it is possible to earn
a good grade in this type of professor's class, but in general the grades will be as low as the
malicious professor can make them.
The third type of professor is the uncaring professor. This type of instructor has lost interest in
teaching; therefore, they do not put any effort into it. This professor can be recognized by their
monotonous tone of voice and lack of interest of the subject. Their lectures only cover the basics of
the material. They make no effort to appeal to the students' interests; consequently, most students

Teaching agriculture to college students may be his profession, but his priority is their safety.
Rudy Ritz, Ph.D, is an assistant professor within Texas Tech University's Department of Agricultural
Education and Communications.
Ritz said he believes many tragic occurrences and recent events in society may be a primary reason
behind why campus carry is becoming a reality.
"People are concerned about their safety, their students and families," Ritz said. "I think people have
finally realized that 99.99 percent of firearm owners are responsible, respectable, law–abiding
citizens."
Andy Hart, Ph.D., Extension 4–H and youth development specialist, is a close friend and colleague
of Ritz.
"Dr. Ritz is a good instructor," Hart said, "I do not think that students carrying guns on campus
would bother him at all."
He said Ritz is not a professor that seems to encounter many issues with students and does not think
he will ever have to fear for his life because of an upset student.
Ritz said he suspects that if a criminal or "rogue outlaw" wanted to bring a gun into his classroom
prior to the legalization of campus carry, they are probably already doing so.
"A sign or a law is not going to stop someone that is not a law–abiding citizen," Ritz said.
Ritz also said he does not think campus carry will affect his job negatively.
Hart said he thinks campus carry could possibly cause some distractions for Ritz and other

49. Two Types Of College Professors
Throughout college, we are encountered with different types of professors, ones that help through
college and others that put us through hell in our time there. While in college, I had two types of
professors the lenient and the stern type. The students have to deal with these types of professors on
a daily basis because there is no other choice. Both types of professors have different attitudes, way
of teaching. However both have the same common goal which is to educate their students the best
way they believe is right. Attitude is one of the major differences between these two types of
professors. The lenient professor finds a comedic angle to almost everything, this means that they do
not easily get upset or stressed. This type of professor

51. Comparing and Contrasting High School Teachers and...
Most people see teachers and professors in the same light. They perform similar tasks. They teach.
However, they are separated by a fine line of distinction. High school teachers help a student build a
foundation of knowledge, and train the student to focus on learning. College professors help to
shape and define a student's foundation of knowledge, and challenge the student to cultivate the
mind. High school teachers and college professors have similar goals and guidelines, but they take a
differing approach to achieving the end result. The way the class is conducted, academic
expectations, and view of student responsibility are a few of the contrasts between high school
teachers and college professors.

The student is responsible for knowing what is required and when it is due. For example; I once
asked my math professor if we would have a homework assignment for the weekend and he did not
answer me. One of the other students told me to look in the syllabus for the homework assignment. I
was embarrassed that I had asked and now I save my syllabus for the entire course.
Academic expectations are different between high school teachers and college professors as well.
The academic expectations of teachers are focused on memorizing and regurgitating facts and can
be met with minimal effort on the part of the student. High school teachers tend to point out the
relationship between subjects so that the student has no choice but to see the connections.
Furthermore, the student is expected to merely do the homework, and be able to recite the lesson to
earn a passing grade. Memorization is the primary focus. For example; students are required to
memorize the multiplication tables even if they don't understand the concept of multiplication. I was
one of those students that did not understand multiplication and as a result, I forgot the
multiplication tables almost as soon as math class was over. Whether or not the student actually
understands the material is second to being able to recite the material. This demonstrates a much
lower academic expectation compared

communication skills and networking then any other class from my time at DePaul so far. He has

There are many main reasons why college is valuable; however, the one I personally think is most
valuable is, because it is helping one's self build self–esteem. College is much more than just a

life lesson, yet you truly learn who you are. By finding which direction you want to go in life more

Most students who attend college are on an extreme budget; however, by learning how to manage
one's money in a life skills class can be very valuable in college. From here on, when I get
overwhelmed with how much money something will be I look back at when I took my success
strategy class in my first year of college; in a college success strategy really prepares student's for
life skills that they will need. Also, in success strategy class I learned how to budget money, and my
financial aid. Therefore, this was a very valuable life lesson that everyone should carry on into one's
first career. These management skills help students later in life, and more in–depth than just a
degree. Therefore, life skills are detrimental to building self–esteem and self–respect, because

Imagine reading the same book over and over and over again. After about the fifth time it would

they all sound the same. When writing, students do not venture out and get creative. Writing in
English is all about perception and varies from person to person. Every piece of writing should be
different and based on each individual 's perspective. Sometimes students do not venture out and get
creative with their writing, they stick to the bland and boring basic ways that everyone else uses. In

this problem. Barry Alford, the author of the article, uses all personal experience to persuade the

Bartholomae and Ira Shor's ideas. Alford's main purpose was to express upon readers the idea that

The goal of college professors is to prepare students for life after college. Teachers commonly rely
on presentations to teach students communication skills, but that is not enough because it only
teaches an individual to speak in front of a group. Interpersonal skills are a required skill set to have
an effective conversation with another individual, which makes interpersonal skills extremely
important in the Business community. Interpersonal skills are important in the business community

Chris Cotter says that active listening is a complicated skill to learn because it requires an individual
to be mentally engaged to the speaker's tone of voice, and body language (Cotter). In other words,
students need to be aware of both verbal and non–verbal messages. Louise Rehling says an effective
means to start actively listening to focus on a what a group member is communicating, instead of
thinking of a response at the same time. When a disagreement occurs in the group, members are
expected to watch for body language and other cues to fully understand their group member thought
process, instead of deeming them unhelpful for the group (482). When individuals feel that their
voice is being heard then a trust among group members is strengthened and the quality of
assignment is improved, thus listening skills is an important skill taught in group work. In the
present day, a majority of companies want to create a relationship with their consumer. Employees
that are able to actively listen to clients are better adept to understand the client and change the way
they are communicating with the client.
Verbal communication skills are an important part of cooperative learning because it creates a sense
of trust among group members. A typical response by students when the announcement of a group
project is to occur a moan, whether it be internal or external, is let out. According to Daniel Levi, the

Nurturing behavior regarding teaching is defined in both negative and positive ways when
addressing the effectiveness of the teacher and his or her impact and influence on student learning.
Helping a student become a better and more involved learner is an important issue when talking
about nurturing teaching because it exists as one of the ultimate goals of this kind of encouraging

A nurturing professor may, at this point, be posited as one that creates a ìsupportive and acceptingî
environment for his or her student and that engages in ìsituations where conflict does ariseî
(Jarratt).Susan Jarrattís concept of nurturing behavior is one that combines a non–threatening
environment with a discursive and interactive one. In another discussion of the importance and
effectiveness of nurturing, Margo Culley et. al concurs with this definition. They call for a ìfusion of
affect and intellectî and the practice of being ìdeeply engaged with [her] students yet committed to a
critical observation of this very phenomenon.î Jarratt and Culley et. al are engaging with this
concept of nurturing teaching as positive and illustrating what the practice of it should entail. They

this nurturing teaching is important for women teachers to posses, especially those teaching

This shows how university now value a higher
education upon where a university sits on the ranking list instead of the prestigious education that
they offer. With universities fighting to become number one on the list most of them have decided to

be hard for any student to study a subject if they have partial instructions, or no instructions. For
instance, Scudder was given some instructions on how to study about fish and Shaler were given no
