WhenShovel Knightreawakens,the TowerhasbeensealedandShieldKnightisnowhere tobe seen.
Grievingforhisbeloved,ShovelKnightgivesupadventuringandsecludeshimself.However,during
hisabsence,the Enchantressrisestopower,spreadingevil acrossthe land.Uponhearingthatthe
Enchantresshasunsealedthe Towerof Fate,Shovel Knighttakesuphisshovelagainandventures
towardsit,hopingto findandrescue ShieldKnight.Inordertodoso, Shovel Knightmustfightthe
eightmembersof "The Orderof No Quarter,"whohave beendispatchedbythe Enchantressto
impede him.Shovel Knightisalsorepeatedlyimpededinhisquestbythe BlackKnight,aformer

The original MegaMan seriesonthe NES hasgenerallyconsistedof 2D platformgamesthatfocuson

playermayattemptthese eightlevelsinanyorder,usingweaponsgainedinone level toovercome
challengesin the others.The playercanreturnto the game at a laterpointusinga passwordsystem;
the passwordwill retainanynumberof the eightstagesclearedandmostpower-ups.Completing
some stageswill subtlyaffectthe landscape of others.Forexample,clearingStormEagle'saircraft
carrier stage will cause electricaloutagesinSparkMandrill'spowerplantstage.Incertainstages,X
can hop inside Ride Armourtofightenemies.Ride Armourisabipedal tankcapable of powerful
punches.
X's abilitiesare similartothose inpreviousMegaMan games,suchas running,jumping,anda
chargeable armcannon namedthe "X-Buster".However,MegaMan X introducesanumberof
elementsnotpresentinthe original MegaMan titles. One prominentfeature isthe abilityto scale,
slide down,orjumpoff nearlyanywall.Armourpartcapsulescan be foundinseveral stageswhich
displayaholographicmessage fromDr.Lightwhenapproached.Eachcapsule upgradesone of X's
bodyparts (hislegs, armour,helmet,orX-Buster) grantingthe playerimprovedfirepowerand
defence,aswell asnewabilities,like adashupgrade. The playercan alsocollecthidden"Heart
Tanks"that extendX'smaximumlife energyand"Sub-Tanks"thatcanstore extraenergyforlater
use. Whencertainconditionsare met,asecretcapsule can be unlockedwhichgivesXthe abilityto
performthe "Hadouken",anattack usedbycharacters fromCapcom's StreetFighterseries.
