God of War is an action-adventure game based on Greek mythology released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2. The player controls Kratos, a former Spartan general who serves the god of war, Ares. After renouncing his service to Ares, Kratos is tricked into killing his family by the god. Driven by revenge, Kratos sets out to kill Ares at the request of the goddess Athena. As the game progresses, flashbacks reveal Kratos' backstory and past crimes committed while serving Ares.

throughout the story to serve as a reminder
