Just turn your tears to laughter And joy will follow after
If May days you remember You’ll soon forget December
Instead of asking pity Just say you’re sitting pretty Then
you will see that life will be A wondrous melody
............................ Soon I’ll sail away, sail to old Bombay
Where your arms and your charms will hold me Skies of
fairest blue, eyes of rarest hue Haunt me, taunt me
endlessly Tantalizing lights I’m heeding your call
Oriental nights I love most of all When I’m there I’ll pray
I can always stay With you near in my dear Bombay
With You, Dear, in Bombay

researcher at Tulane University, New Orleans, has
stirred up the soup and will soon add some peptides.
These peptides aren’t made by our cells, though.
They’re synthesized in the lab, allowing Wimley and
team to tweak their chemical structures and hopefully
create ones with therapeutic potential, particularly as
smart-delivery systems to target cells with greater
precision and deliver biological cargoes such as drugs.

Sir Francis Bacon, Baron Varulam, Viscount of St. Albans
(1561 – 1621) emerged as the rst candidate to replace
Shakespeare. As a leading gure of the English
Renaissance, he certainly had the biography for it:
educated at Cambridge, widely traveled, Bacon was a
famous philosopher, one of the inventors of the
scienti c method, who also led a literary society. He
was also the ultimate royal insider – in addition to
holding other positions, he was a member of the Privy
Council and held the title of Lord Chancellor. The case
for Bacon’s authorship was rst made by an American
author, Delia Bacon – no relation. While people had
questioned Shakespeare’s authorship, she was the rst
person to name an alternative, though she believed
that Bacon wrote Shakespeare’s plays in collaboration
with other leading minds of the time, like Sir Walter
Raleigh and Edmund Spenser.

juxtaposes not two but three di erent ways of thinking

There is arrogance "hidden in plain sight" in "truth
required evidence from the real world". Sir Francis
Bacon, in 1618, was appointed lord chancellor, the
most powerful position in England, and in 1621 he was
created viscount St Albans. Shortly afterwards, he was
charged by parliament with accepting bribes, which he
admitted. He was ned and imprisoned and then
banished from court. Although the king later pardoned
him, this was the end of Bacon's public life. He retired
to his home at Gorhambury in Hertfordshire, where he
continued to write. He died in London on 9 April 1626.

Supersymmetry links the two di erent classes of
particles known as fermions and bosons. Particles like
those in the Standard Model are classi ed as fermions
or bosons based on a property known as spin.
Fermions all have half of a unit of spin, while the
bosons have 0, 1 or 2 units of spin. Supersymmetry
predicts that each of the particles in the Standard
Model has a partner with a spin that di ers by half of a
unit. So bosons are accompanied by fermions and vice
versa. Linked to their di erences in spin are di erences
in their collective properties. Fermions are very
stando sh; every one must be in a di erent state. On
the other hand, bosons are very clannish; they prefer to
be in the same state. Fermions and bosons seem as
di erent as could be, yet supersymmetry brings the
two types together.

Helping, xing, and serving represents three di erent
ways of seeing life. When you help, you see life as weak.
When you x, you see life as broken. When you serve,
you see life as a whole. Fixing and helping may be the
work of the ego, and service the work of the soul
(Remen RN. Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories That Heal.
New York: Riverhead Books; 1997). The word
compassion means “to su er with.” Compassionate
care calls physicians to walk with people in the midst of
their pain, to be partners with patients rather than
experts dictating information to them. “Physicians must
be compassionate and empathic in caring for patients.
… In all of their interactions with patients, they must
seek to understand the meaning of the patients' stories
in the context of the patients' beliefs and family and
cultural values.… They must continue to care for dying
patients even when disease-speci c therapy is no
longer available or desired” (Association of American
Medical Colleges 2001).

A coherent heart is not a metronome since its rhythms
are characterized by dynamic complexity with stability
over longer time-scales. A metronome, from ancient
Greek μέτρον (métron, "measure") and νέμω (némo, "I
manage", "I lead"), is a device that produces an audible
click or other sound at a regular interval that can be set
by the user, typically in beats per minute (BPM).
Musicians use the device to practice playing to a regular
pulse. Metronomes typically include synchronized
visual motion (e.g., swinging pendulum or blinking
lights).

Riks of dying 5.3 times higher with HR variability of less
than 50 ms compared to HR variability of more than
100 ms. A high degree of heart rate (HR) variability is
found in compensated hearts with good function,
whereas HR variability can be decreased with severe
coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, aging,
and diabetic neuropathy. The relative risk of mortality
was 5.3 times higher in the group with HR variability of
less than 50 ms than the group with HR variability of
more than 100 ms. HR variability remained a signi cant
predictor of mortality after adjusting for clinical,
demographic, other Holter features and ejection
fraction. A hypothesis to explain this nding is that
decreased HR variability correlates with increased
sympathetic or decreased vagal tone, which may
predispose to ventricular brillation.

Events that threaten, frustrate or provoke occur on a
daily basis, yet only a minority of individuals respond
with aggression. During adolescence, ongoing
functional development occurs in neural circuitry
underpinning processes of key relevance to reactive
aggression, including emotional reactivity, emotion
regulation, decision-making, and social reward; as well
as in the response of the ‘aggression network’ itself.
This may at least in part explain the peak in reactive
aggressive behavior seen during these years. However,
since the majority of adolescents do not develop
clinically signi cant reactive aggression, it is important
to understand how individual di erences (in factors
such as irritability or emotional reactivity) may interact
with canonical trajectories of adolescent neurocognitive
trajectories to confer risk or resilience in this area.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity is a core
component of emotion processing. The limbic system
and medial prefrontal cortex play important roles in the
regulation of ANS activity. This study examined the
relations of ANS activity in the parasympathetic
nervous system (PNS) and the sympathetic nervous
system (SNS) with brain activity during emotional face
processing in adolescents. A potential metric for adult
development - ndings implicate the hippocampus for
potentiating SNS activity, document that regulation of
SNS and PNS activity are coordinated with distinct
regions of the medial prefrontal cortex, and suggest
potential developmental di erences in vmPFC
regulation of PNS activity between adolescents and
adults.

While working in Switzerland on Tobacco Harm
Reduction we were amazed at the value of Heart Rate
Variability (HRV) as a predictive biomarker. HRV is a very
useful biomarker we can use in our day to day e orts
to improve and develop. High HRV is Good, desirable.
Our social behavior is orchestrated by a network of
prefrontal and para-limbic brain regions and are
relevant for a plethora of social processes, implying
that functional and structural changes (HRV as
feedback for development via practice - see the lecture
slides I posted yesterday that relate "Feeling Space" ) in
these brain regions are associated with changes in
social cognition and social interaction. For example,
individuals with high HRV are more likely to recognize
facial expressions of others to regulate emotional
responses towards others and to establish cooperative
relationships with others than individuals with low HRV.
Inter-individual di erences in high-frequency heart rate
variability (HF-HRV) are associated with inter-individual
di erences in social behavior and social cognition. This
study suggests that males with high HF-HRV are more
inclined to engage in cooperative behavior than males
with low HF-HRV. Other useful papers: Kahneman, D.,

Continuing Quest for Knowledge Despite the recent
clinical success of drugs such as trastuzumab
emtansine (Kadcyla), brentuximab vedotin (Adcetris),
and inotuzumab ozogamicin (Besponsa), the fact is that
we do not yet fully understand how ADCs elicit their
pharmacological e ects in patients. The quest to
develop more e ective and less toxic ADCs continues.
Improved and more predictive preclinical studies
combined with clinical studies of next-generation ADCs
will augment our understanding and ability to develop
agents with improved pharmacological properties,
reduced toxicity, and enhanced e cacy — ultimately
leading to more durable clinical responses in patients.

A CAR gene was unintentionally introduced into a single

Penn. The cancer cell expressing the receptor was
infused back into the patient along with therapeutic

resistance, and the patient died of leukemia

The unique case was rst reported to a National

Three Identical Strangers is a documentary that tells
the amazing story of three identical male triplets who
reunited as young adults after being separated at birth.
The Conspiracy Behind 'Three Identical Strangers' Is
Beyond Messed Up - VICE The documentary about their
lives, Three Identical Strangers, elucidates, the brothers
were part of an elaborate psychological experiment
hatched in the 1960s to study the e ects of nature
versus nurture. Psychiatrists partnered with the Louise
Wise Services adoption agency on a “Twin Study,” which
involved splitting up identical twins and triplets, placing
them in di erent home environments, and studying
their development. Kellman, Shafran, and Galland were
three of their test subjects. No one, except the
scientists who orchestrated the study, know how many
other sets of twins and triplets may be out there,
completely unaware they have long-lost identical
siblings. The results of the study were never released.
When the lead researcher, Dr. Peter Neubauer, died in
2008, all of his records were placed with Yale University
and restricted until 2065, presumably long enough for
anyone involved in the study to have died.

Consciousness: 1. Awareness – feeling dissonance,

Reevaluation of beliefs and assumptions 3. Critical
re ection and re ective discourse 4. New outlook and
behaviors Our subconscious and built-in “Prediction

we (should) feel, and crisis induces fear. We don’t
challenge our assumptions, we don’t change our set

sense is not so common (Voltaire), because it is the
collection of prejudices acquired by the age of eighteen

di erent rate; many do not! This is how I know to
increase my Order of Consciousness: To consciously go
(actions) beyond traditional education & training to be
self-authored in what we know and (to be self-assured)
how we know it (epistemology). To be self-transforming
(practice, practice) in lling gaps (awareness) between
what we know and what we can implement (awareness,
failures of actions, practice). Feel (dissonance) the need
(multiple perspectives, empathy), know (awareness) the
ways (practices) to leverage our collective (multi-,
transdisciplinary, and multiple systems), experiential
learning (conversation, re ection), and understand
(subconscious and conscious) the multiple contexts
(Pro teer to Patient to Professional to Good
Practitioner), of our abstract nouns (e.g., quality,
assurance, etc.)

February 26, 2017, I was still counting days since I quit
smoking – when I wrote: “It is day 110 since I quit
smoking!” Gave up counting and thinking about it long
since then. On my mind then and now is “Nonsense
News No-sense Nocebo” – it was, and is, my description
of the challenge posed by the increasing irrationality in
our global society and its devastating consequences.
My life has been very privileged; I enjoy real friendships
unhindered by any religious dogma. Within our circle of
friends across many religions how have we prevented
the negative in uence of religious dogma? How can I
contribute to a solution? How to go beyond passive
support, such as donations to refugee relief
organizations? To nd a path forward, I seek to pursue
“Bob’s Big Idea” and Gandhi’s “a way out of hell.” The
path forward in 2017 was uncertain – “Fruitful
discussion on #NonsenseNewsNo-senseNocebo will
need to overcome the reactions induced by religious
dogma and other factors. Today I am still ill-prepared
(not knowledgeable) to do so. The path forward is
uncertain. Given my life stage, I must not shy away
from pursuing this challenge.” By end of 2018 I aim to
chart a new path forward; at the moment I sense that I
will transition away from pharmaceuticals as I had
anticipated/envisioned when I wrote the blog entitled
“Schrödinger's Cat & My Journey From 2015 to 2020” “It
is very easy to learn intolerance and unlearn tolerance,

whose value is approximately equal to: 1/137. Symbol
for the ne-structure constant is Greek alpha (). Fine
Structure - closely spaced groups of optical spectrum
lines of elements like: hydrogen and helium. These
optical spectrum lines are in a way the ngerprint of
the element's energy levels. Since the energy levels of
any given element are quantized (i.e. only discrete
energy levels are available) the optical spectrum
appears as a series of lines instead of a continuous
spectrum.

Most acts of courage don’t come from whistleblowers
or organizational martyrs. Instead, they come from
respected insiders at all levels who take action—be it
campaigning for a risky strategic move, pushing to
change an unfair policy, or speaking out against
unethical behavior—because they believe it’s the right
thing to do. Their reputations and track records enable
them to make more headway than those on the

they manage the process well, they don’t necessarily

Bootstrapping ؎ In many branches of science,
researchers often have to draw conclusions from
limited data. Assessing the level of con dence that
comes with such conclusions is crucial, and often
di cult. In the 1970s, Efron and others realized that the
increased availability of computers would make new,
computationally intensive tests feasible. The bootstrap
was the rst such method. It slices up a data sample in
random ways and calculates whether a conclusion —
such as the fact that two variables are strongly
correlated — is solid. “It allows data analysts to use
complicated, sometimes very complicated, methods
and still be able to assess their accuracy,” Efron says.

More than 80% of drugs that are tested in humans fail

Anser indicus, migrate over the Himalayas twice a year
between their summer breeding grounds on the
Mongolian plateau and their winter range in south-
eastern Tibet or India. They are not the only birds to y

recorded at 10,000 metres, high enough to avoid
predatory eagles, while the Ruppell’s Vulture (Gyps
rueppellii) has been seen at 11,300 metres.

About Sections Abstract Today the
extreme space weather events of
early August 1972 are discussed as
benchmarks for Sun‐Earth transit
times of solar ejecta (14.6 hr) and for
solar energetic particle uxes (10
MeV ion ux >70,000 cm−2·s−1·sr−1).
Although the magnetic storm index,
Dst, dipped to only −125 nT, the
magnetopause was observed within
5.2 RE and the plasmapause within 2
RE. Widespread electric‐ and
communication‐grid disturbances
plagued North America late on 4
August
There was an additional e ect, long
buried in the Vietnam War archives
that add credence to the severity of
the storm impact: a nearly
instantaneous, unintended
detonation of dozens of sea mines
south of Hai Phong, North Vietnam
on 4 August 1972. The U.S. Navy
attributed the dramatic event to
magnetic perturbations of solar
storms. Herein we discuss how such
a nding is broadly consistent with
terrestrial e ects and technological
impacts of the 4 August 1972 event
and the propagation of major
eruptive activity from the Sun to the
Earth. We also provide insight into
the solar, geophysical, and military
circumstances of this extraordinary
situation. In our view this storm
deserves a scienti c revisit as a
grand challenge for the space
weather community, as it provides
space‐age terrestrial observations of
what was likely a Carrington‐class
storm. Plain Language Summary The
extreme space weather events of
early August 1972 had signi cant
impact on the U.S. Navy, which have
not been widely reported

These e ects, long buried in the

to the severity of the storm: a nearly
instantaneous, unintended
detonation of dozens of sea mines
south of Hai Phong, North Vietnam
on 4 August 1972. This event
occurred near the end of the
Vietnam War. The U.S. Navy
attributed the dramatic event to
magnetic perturbations of solar
storms. In researching these events
we determined that the widespread
electric‐ and communication‐grid

resulted from propagation of major

Does the "treatment" look so good due to the choice of

The placebo might have caused harm and in turn
in ated Vascepa’s e ectiveness pro le. In the 8,179-
subject trial, patients in the control arm received a
mineral oil- lled pill to look like Amarin’s puri ed sh-

saw some key CV biomarkers trending in a bad way
that should not be observed with normal placebos,
Je eries analyst Michael Yee noted in a Sunday memo
to investors. Patients who got the dummy pill saw their
levels of bad cholesterol—usually associated with
higher heart risks—increase around 10% in the rst
year versus less than 3% changes in the Vascepa group.
Level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP)—an
indication of in ammation—also increased 30% in the
placebo group.

Lymphatic lariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis,
is a painful and profoundly dis guring disease. In
communities where lariasis is transmitted, all ages are
a ected. While the infection may be acquired during
childhood its visible manifestations may occur later in
life, causing temporary or permanent disability. In
endemic countries, lymphatic lariasis has a major
social and economic impact with an estimated annual
loss of $1 billion and impairing economic activity up to
88% (Katabarwa M et al. 2008). The disease is caused by
three species of thread-like nematode worms, known
as lariae – Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and
Brugia timori. Male worms are about 3–4 centimetres in
length, and female worms 8–10 centimetres. The male
and female worms together form “nests” in the human
lymphatic system, the network of nodes and vessels
that maintain the delicate uid balance between blood
and body tissues. The lymphatic system is an essential
component of the body’s immune system.

System justi cation, like many other cognitive and
motivational processes, may operate outside of
conscious awareness. System justi cation theory began
as an account of stereotyping and intergroup relations,
before developing into an integrative framework that
could be applied to other topics. The term "system" is
used in the context of the theory to refer to any social,
economic, or political arrangements in which multiple
individuals (and/or groups) are embedded-ranging
from small-scale systems such as the nuclear family to
large-scale systems such as the nation-state or the
capitalist economy. By focusing on the ways in which
individuals accommodate and rationalize aspects of the
societal status quo, system justi cation theory com-
plements and expands upon several other social
psychological perspectives, including cognitive
dissonance, just world, social identity, terror man-
agement, social dominance, and shared reality
theories. Among other things, system justi cation
theory proposes that people actively defend and
bolster existing social arrangements, often by denying
or rationalizing injustices and other problems, even
when doing so comes at the expense of their personal
and group interests. Twenty years of system

In 2004: A Decade of System Justi cation Theory:
Accumulated Evidence of Conscious and Unconscious
Bolstering of the Status Quo The evidence
demonstrates that people are motivated not only to
hold favorable attitudes toward themselves and toward
members of their own groups (as other theories
assume), but also to hold favorable attitudes toward
the existing social system and the status quo. What is
especially signi cant is that system justi cation motives
are sometimes capable of overriding ego and group
justi cation motives associated with the protection of
individual and collective interests and esteem. In
contrast to other theories, system justi cation theory
unambiguously addresses the possibilities that (a) there
is an ideological motive to justify the existing social
order, (b) the motive is at least partially responsible for
outgroup favoritism and the internalization of
inferiority among members of disadvantaged groups,
(c) it is observed most readily at an implicit,
nonconscious level of awareness, and (d) paradoxically,
it is sometimes strongest among those who are most
disadvantaged by the social order. PDF version:

Narinder Singh Kapany was born on 31 October 1926 in
Moga, Punjab (north of India) to a wealthy Sikh family.
He studied physics at the University of Agra (India)
while working in a factory for the design and
manufacture of optical instruments, where he began to
be interested in the technological applications of the
theories he studied. After graduating in 1952, he moved
to London to study for a doctorate at the Imperial
College in London with the prestigious British physicist
Harold Hopkins, a researcher in the eld of optics.
Kapany sought to achieve a system that would allow
the use of light as a means of transmitting information,
picking up the baton from earlier celebrated scientists.
One of these was the Frenchman Claude Chappe, who
in the 18th century developed a kind of optical
telegraph, considered the rst attempt to use light as a
vehicle for the exchange of information. His idea was to
position towers facing each other but separated by
dozens of kilometres and to use mirrors to re ect
messages encoded in the form of light.

With seasonal crop residue burning, industrial and
vehicle emissions and calm winds persisting, a thick
layer of toxic smog settled over the national capital on
Saturday.

mask have a capacity to lter out at minimum microns
size particles. The challenge is posed by submicron or

Most navigation today relies on a global navigation
satellite system (GNSS), such as GPS, which sends and
receives signals from satellites orbiting the Earth. The
quantum accelerometer is a self-contained system that
does not rely on any external signals. This is particularly
important because satellite signals can become
unavailable due to blockages such as tall buildings, or
can be jammed, imitated or denied – preventing
accurate navigation. One day of denial of the satellite
service would cost the UK £1 billion.

The neurobiology of recalling an object from memory is
di erent from dreaming, and is di erent from
purposeful conscious imagining a novel object
(example: a pineapple on top of a dolphin). The latter
process is referred to as mental synthesis to distinguish
it from the simple recall and dreaming. Mental
synthesis is controlled by and completely dependent on
the intact lateral prefrontal cortex.

How can things be booming when average Americans
are treading water? The answer has to do with the way
economists think about the economy. In both their
formal models and their mental ones, economic
performance is divided into two very di erent
components — macro and micro. That divide has
seeped into popular language and punditry,
occasionally causing unnecessary confusion.

Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc., acknowledged the importance of de ning science in terms of its methods as follows: “‘Science is not an encyclopedic body of knowledge about the universe. Instead, it represents a process for proposing and re ning theoretical explanations about the world that are subject to further testing and re nement’” (emphasis in original). 509 U.S. 579, 590 (1993) (quoting Brief for the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Academy of Sciences as Amici Curiae at 7–8). • 31. Recognizing Rumination In Yourself View Post Thursday November 15th, 2018 Sir Francis Bacon, Baron Varulam, Viscount of St. Albans (1561 – 1621) emerged as the rst candidate to replace Shakespeare. As a leading gure of the English Renaissance, he certainly had the biography for it: educated at Cambridge, widely traveled, Bacon was a famous philosopher, one of the inventors of the scienti c method, who also led a literary society. He was also the ultimate royal insider – in addition to holding other positions, he was a member of the Privy Council and held the title of Lord Chancellor. The case for Bacon’s authorship was rst made by an American author, Delia Bacon – no relation. While people had questioned Shakespeare’s authorship, she was the rst person to name an alternative, though she believed that Bacon wrote Shakespeare’s plays in collaboration with other leading minds of the time, like Sir Walter Raleigh and Edmund Spenser. View Post Thursday November 15th, 2018 Hidden in plain sight- for centuries. Thanks to our compartmentalized system of education. Shakespeare juxtaposes not two but three di erent ways of thinking about weight: weight from the perspective of common experience, weight from the perspective of early modern physics, and weight as a metaphor to capture our sense of moral gravity. View Post Thursday November 15th, 2018 There is arrogance "hidden in plain sight" in "truth required evidence from the real world". Sir Francis Bacon, in 1618, was appointed lord chancellor, the most powerful position in England, and in 1621 he was created viscount St Albans. Shortly afterwards, he was charged by parliament with accepting bribes, which he admitted. He was ned and imprisoned and then banished from court. Although the king later pardoned him, this was the end of Bacon's public life. He retired to his home at Gorhambury in Hertfordshire, where he continued to write. He died in London on 9 April 1626. Particles like those in the Standard Model are classi ed as fermions or bosons based on a property known as spin. Fermions all have half of a unit of spin, while the bosons have 0, 1 or 2 units of spin. Supersymmetry predicts that each of the particles in the Standard Model has a partner with a spin that di ers by half of a unit. So bosons are accompanied by fermions and vice versa. Linked to their di erences in spin are di erences in their collective properties. Fermions are very stando sh; every one must be in a di erent state. On the other hand, bosons are very clannish; they prefer to be in the same state. Fermions and bosons seem as di erent as could be, yet supersymmetry brings the two types together. https://home.cern/science/physics/supersymmetry Recognizing Rumination In Yourself

The word compassion means “to su er with.” Compassionate care calls physicians to walk with people in the midst of their pain, to be partners with patients rather than experts dictating information to them. “Physicians must be compassionate and empathic in caring for patients. … In all of their interactions with patients, they must seek to understand the meaning of the patients' stories in the context of the patients' beliefs and family and cultural values.… They must continue to care for dying patients even when disease-speci c therapy is no longer available or desired” (Association of American Medical Colleges 2001). The relative risk of mortality was 5.3 times higher in the group with HR variability of less than 50 ms than the group with HR variability of more than 100 ms. HR variability remained a signi cant predictor of mortality after adjusting for clinical, demographic, other Holter features and ejection fraction. During adolescence, ongoing functional development occurs in neural circuitry underpinning processes of key relevance to reactive aggression, including emotional reactivity, emotion regulation, decision-making, and social reward; as well as in the response of the ‘aggression network’ itself. This may at least in part explain the peak in reactive aggressive behavior seen during these years. However, since the majority of adolescents do not develop clinically signi cant reactive aggression, it is important to understand how individual di erences (in factors such as irritability or emotional reactivity) may interact with canonical trajectories of adolescent neurocognitive trajectories to confer risk or resilience in this area. • 41. Recognizing Rumination In Yourself View Post Thursday November 15th, 2018 While working in Switzerland on Tobacco Harm Reduction we were amazed at the value of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) as a predictive biomarker. HRV is a very useful biomarker we can use in our day to day e orts to improve and develop. High HRV is Good, desirable. Our social behavior is orchestrated by a network of prefrontal and para-limbic brain regions and are relevant for a plethora of social processes, implying that functional and structural changes (HRV as feedback for development via practice - see the lecture slides I posted yesterday that relate "Feeling Space" ) in these brain regions are associated with changes in social cognition and social interaction. For example, individuals with high HRV are more likely to recognize facial expressions of others to regulate emotional responses towards others and to establish cooperative relationships with others than individuals with low HRV. Inter-individual di erences in high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) are associated with inter-individual di erences in social behavior and social cognition. This study suggests that males with high HF-HRV are more inclined to engage in cooperative behavior than males with low HF-HRV. Other useful papers: Kahneman, D., Knetsch, J. L. & Thaler, R. H. Knipp Brian J. Fraser M. A. Shea D. F. Smart First published: 25 October 2018 https://doi.org/10.1029/2018SW002024 About Sections Abstract Today the extreme space weather events of early August 1972 are discussed as benchmarks for Sun‐Earth transit times of solar ejecta (14.6 hr) and for solar energetic particle uxes (10 MeV ion ux >70,000 cm−2·s−1·sr−1). Although the magnetic storm index, Dst, dipped to only −125 nT, the magnetopause was observed within 5.2 RE and the plasmapause within 2 RE. Widespread electric‐ and communication‐grid disturbances plagued North America late on 4 August There was an additional e ect, long buried in the Vietnam War archives that add credence to the severity of the storm impact: a nearly instantaneous, unintended detonation of dozens of sea mines south of Hai Phong, North Vietnam on 4 August 1972. The U.S. Navy attributed the dramatic event to magnetic perturbations of solar storms. Herein we discuss how such a nding is broadly consistent with terrestrial e ects and technological impacts of the 4 August 1972 event and the propagation of major eruptive activity from the Sun to the Earth. We also provide insight into the solar, geophysical, and military circumstances of this extraordinary situation. In our view this storm deserves a scienti c revisit as a grand challenge for the space weather community, as it provides space‐age terrestrial observations of what was likely a Carrington‐class storm. This event occurred near the end of the Vietnam War. The U.S. Navy attributed the dramatic event to magnetic perturbations of solar storms. In endemic countries, lymphatic lariasis has a major social and economic impact with an estimated annual loss of $1 billion and impairing economic activity up to 88% (Katabarwa M et al. 2008). The disease is caused by three species of thread-like nematode worms, known as lariae – Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Brugia timori. System justi cation theory began as an account of stereotyping and intergroup relations, before developing into an integrative framework that could be applied to other topics. The term "system" is used in the context of the theory to refer to any social, economic, or political arrangements in which multiple individuals (and/or groups) are embedded-ranging from small-scale systems such as the nuclear family to large-scale systems such as the nation-state or the capitalist economy. By focusing on the ways in which individuals accommodate and rationalize aspects of the societal status quo, system justi cation theory com- plements and expands upon several other social psychological perspectives, including cognitive dissonance, just world, social identity, terror man- agement, social dominance, and shared reality theories. Among other things, system justi cation theory proposes that people actively defend and bolster existing social arrangements, often by denying or rationalizing injustices and other problems, even when doing so comes at the expense of their personal and group interests. • 86. Recognizing Rumination In Yourself View Post Sunday November 11th, 2018 In 2004: A Decade of System Justi cation Theory: Accumulated Evidence of Conscious and Unconscious Bolstering of the Status Quo The evidence demonstrates that people are motivated not only to hold favorable attitudes toward themselves and toward members of their own groups (as other theories assume), but also to hold favorable attitudes toward the existing social system and the status quo. What is especially signi cant is that system justi cation motives are sometimes capable of overriding ego and group justi cation motives associated with the protection of individual and collective interests and esteem. In contrast to other theories, system justi cation theory unambiguously addresses the possibilities that (a) there is an ideological motive to justify the existing social order, (b) the motive is at least partially responsible for outgroup favoritism and the internalization of inferiority among members of disadvantaged groups, (c) it is observed most readily at an implicit, nonconscious level of awareness, and (d) paradoxically, it is sometimes strongest among those who are most disadvantaged by the social order.
