Understanding the term conservation and biodiversity.
Importance of the conservation methods and need.
Methods and the strategy to conserve the natural flora.
2. It is the management of nature and
Biodiversity on Earth with the aim of
protecting species, their habitats, and
ecosystems from excessive rates of
extinction.
3. A variety of plant or animal life in world or
any particular habitat.
Biodiversity is full complexity and variety of
life, at all scales, from genetic diversity up
to species even ecosystem diversity.
4. Homo sapiens has effected planet Earth in
many ways. In the past few centuries
these effects have been catastrophic.
There are now many threats to natural
resources of our planet
5. Plant diversity is the major part of total
biodiversity-just think of the richness of the
tropical rain forest.
It forms the basis of all food webs and
underpins functioning of all ecosystems.
o So plant diversity is an essential component
of efforts for biodiversity conservation.
o As plants are at a risk of extinction in all parts
of world, their conservation is a PRIORITY.
6. Habitat loss and degradation
Invasive alien species
Over-exploitation of resources
Climatic changes
7. Species extinction is a natural process.
However, species evolve just as fast as
other species extinct.
In past catastrophic events i.e., asteroid
impact caused major extinctions.
According to IUCN, 784 extinctions have
been recorded since year 1500.
8. Human kind has many major problems to
tackle. So it can be hard to see why we
should care about thousands of species
are going extinct.
It is still important, in recent decades it has
become apparent that we should conserve
the natural world for reasons of
enlightened self-interest.
9. Plants are considered to be first living
organisms on earth.
Without plants environment on earth would
not be possible.
Plants are major source of Oxygen on
earth.
Plants are of high nutrition value.
10. Plants can provide humans with:
Food
Clothing
Furniture and shelter
Medicines
Flowers
Rubber and plastic
Bio-fuels
Economic contribution to one’s country
Cosmetic
Tannins and gums
They form the starting point of food chain
11. GSPC have following five objectives:
obj. 1
Plant diversity is well understood,
documented and recognized.
Obj. 2
Plant diversity is urgently and effectively
conserved.
12. Obj. 3
Plant diversity is used in a sustainable
equitable manner.
Obj. 4
Education and awareness about plant
diversity.
13. Obj. 5
Capacities and public engagements
necessary to implement the strategies,
have been developed.
14. One of the strategies for the conservation
of plants, Botanical gardens are made in
which live plant specimens are placed.
15. GC University Botanical Garden
Lahore Botanical Gardens
Faisalabad Botanical Garden
Quaid e Azam University Botanical
Garden
UOP Botanical Garden
Pakistan Forest Institute Botanical Garden
Karachi University Botanical Garden
16. Govt of Paistan have prepared the
“NATIONAL CONSERVATION STRATEGY”
(NCS) in 1992.
Resource-managed manmade forests like
Changa Manga
Kamalia
Chichawatni
These are planted to conserve forests.
