Evaluation - Question 2
1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
2. My magazine Slant is targeted at a younger, teenage audience which most magazines nowadays are. As my magazine is aimed at a younger audience I have used young models as my artists in order for it to appeal to the younger audience and also to create realism whereas if I had used adult artists it would not appeal so much to the younger audience. I have to some extent represented young people in a stereotypical way in many ways. Firstly I have used some slang and colloquial language rather than using fully standard English, by doing this it will relate to the younger audience better as they too speak in that manner and will find it familiar and will be able to relate to it. The fonts I have used also targets the audience, I have used three fonts which are; Gill Sans Ultra Bold, Eras Bold ITC and Cooper Black all three fonts target the audience better than any other fonts as they are all bold fonts and stand out very well. The target audience would want a font that looks good and stands out whilst reading rather than just a dull and simple font as this would put them of wanting to read the magazine, using the right fonts is crucial to make the magazine appeal to the target audience and I think I have used the right font for my target audience. The way the artists are dressed is also stereotypical, for example the main artist on the front cover is wearing a hoody with a chain. The artists on the contents page consist of two costumes one of which is hoodies and baggy jeans and the other is causal shirts and cardigans with skinny jeans and accessories. This is stereotypical because teenagers are seen as dressing quite intimidating and some teenage girls are seen as dressing very fashionable and caring about the way they look. I think the Mise-en-scene costumes I have used represent my target audience very well, because these reflect the type of clothes that my audience would wear, by doing this I am addressing their own characteristics and therefore they will be familiar with it all. The poses used throughout my magazine are those you would usually see teenagers use, especially those from my target audience, I used these rather than using mature, dull and simple poses. The poses that are being used look hip, slightly intimidating in some and as though they just want to have a good time being young and fun. These poses would appeal to my target audience more as they can relate to them and see their own characteristics in the artists.
3. I have also subverted a few stereotypes as usually in R&B and Hop-Hop magazines you would see a male artist posing on the front cover whereas on my magazine there is a female artist, by doing this I will have attracted more peoples attention as seeing a female artist on a front cover will attract peoples eyes more because they usually see a male artist on a magazine front cover of this genre. Although it is a female artist on the front cover, the way she is posing does not look very feminine but rather a pose you would see a male artist holding on a front cover. More females will be attracted to the magazine as they will feel like this magazine is more for them and that there is finally a magazine were the female is the main artist rather than it always being a male. Also asthis genre of music is both for males and females and so both are equal and can both be on the front cover rather than it always being males. It would also make them interested in knowing what it could possibly be about. By doing this I have made it different from other magazines of the same genre and tried to make it quite unique but not to the extent were it is completely different that they would not be able to recognise the genre of the magazine but to the extent that it is not so similar to every other Hip-Hop/R&B magazine but has its own style.
