The Navigator: Annual Report Edition
In this issue of the Navigator, we would like to present you with our annual report to
the Xavier community. Throughout this issue of the Navigator you will find a detailed
overview of many of the school’s programs. This report includes information about the
students, the staff, the curriculum and much more.
We invite you to carefully examine the information presented. We think you’ll agree that
Xavier is an outstanding school. The data presented would certainly support that claim.
While we are pleased with the progress that Xavier has made, we hold firm to the
belief that, “Each day we get better or worse; we never stay the same.” As a result, we
continue to look for ways to improve our programs in order to fulfill our mission – to
educate the total person in a Catholic environment.
This also seems like an appropriate time to thank all of you for your input throughout
the year. We depend on your positive feedback as well as the concerns you raise to
provide us with a barometer of how we’re doing. Your comments encourage us to
constantly examine our school and look for ways to make it better.
Thanks for taking the time to look over the information. Should you have any
questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

3. Our First President! A Familiar Face & A New Vision Forward.
On March 19th, a Joint Executive Committee (JEC) of the
Xavier High School Board of Education and the Xavier Foun-
dation Board announced the hire of our current principal,
Tom Keating, as the school’s first president effective July 1,
2018! Beginning with the next school year, Xavier will move
to a President-Principal Model of school governance, a model
which is successfully utilized in Catholic high schools nation-
wide. In the position of president, Mr. Keating will now be
the executive officer of the Xavier High School Board and the
Xavier Foundation Board. The primary areas of responsibility
with his new role include leading the Catholic mission of Xavi-
er, student success, visioning, long-range planning, financial
management, public relations & marketing, and development.
“As we are now in our 20th school year here at Xavier,
it is critical that we look ahead to ensure that Xavier
remains a viable and preeminent education option
for generations of future Saints to come. Tom Keating
knows the Xavier story and he can tell that story. He
brings the vision, history and skill set that we need in
this new leadership capacity to meet the challenges
and opportunities that await us as we embark on our
next 20 years.”
~ Lorie Hines
Xavier High School Board of Education President
Keating has served as Xavier High School’s principal since
2004. During his tenure, Xavier has emerged as a premier
Catholic secondary school in Iowa, re-dedicating itself to its
Catholic identity and excellence in the areas of faith devel-
opment, academics, service and student activities. He was
named “Educator of the Year” by the National Catholic
Educational Association (NCEA) in 2010. Beyond his roles at
Xavier, Keating also sits on the Iowa High School Athletic As-
sociation Board of Directors, where he has served since 2009.
Over the past year, a taskforce representing the Xavier
High School Board of Education and the Xavier Foundation
Board conducted extensive research, exploring the viability
of moving Xavier to the President-Principal model. Accord-
ing to the NCEA, this model is currently being used in 60-75
percent of Catholic high schools across the country and has
already been successfully implemented by other Catholic
high schools in Iowa. The taskforce concluded that it would
be in the best longterm interest of the school to move to this
model. The JEC was then established to conduct the search
for a president in consultation with the Archdiocesan Office
of Catholic Schools. Under this model, the president’s direct
reports will include the principal, director of development,
controller, and facilities director. The principal’s primary
responsibility will include the day-to-day academic affairs of
the school. A search to fill the vacated principal position has
already commenced.
“Xavier is a ministry of the 11 Catholic parishes of Ce-
dar Rapids and Marion. Establishing the position of
President will help Xavier more fully embrace its impor-
tant relationship with the parishes and its identity as a
faith-based institution of learning. Tom Keating brings
a wealth of experience to the table with regard to how
Xavier currently operates and how to best move it for-
ward. He has demonstrated an unswerving ability to cul-
tivate an environment at Xavier in which all students are
enriched spiritually, intellectually, and socially. In his new
role, he and Xavier will be better positioned to directly
address the longterm needs of the school so it can con-
tinue to fulfill its mission of developing the total person
in a Catholic environment for many years to come. We
hope that the President of Xavier High School will have
a positive impact on our elementary and middle schools
as well. Catholic schools remain the most effective
means of transmitting the faith to our young people.”
~ Fr. Philip Thompson
Pastor at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids
& Xavier High School Pastoral Coordinator
We invite you to learn more about the President-
Principal Model under the “About” section on

structure and case study conducted by the

relationships, and modeling Christ in our everyday actions,
• Creating an atmosphere of justice and trust through embracing the Gospel in

6. The Theology Department and Campus
Ministry work together to lead in the
faith formation of the students here at
Xavier, but every member of the ad-
ministration, faculty, and staff share in
this responsibility. In keeping with our
Catholic tradition, we seek to engage
both the head and the heart of the stu-
dents in this process of formation.
The Theology curriculum includes top-
ics such as Old and New Testament,
Religious Foundations, Church History,
Ethics and Morality, Christian Lifestyles,
Comparative Religions and Apologet-
ics. Our curriculum is in transition
to align with the required curriculum
developed by the USCCB. All students
who are members of one of our eleven
participating parishes are required to
take four years of Theology. All other
students are required to take at least
two years of Theology. By the time
students have graduated from Xavier,
they will have had over five hundred
clock hours of direct faith formation in
a Theology classroom. The Theology
curriculum follows the guidelines estab-
lished by the Roman Catholic Church.
The Campus Ministry Department at
Xavier offers a wide variety of spir-
itual opportunities and all students are
encouraged to become involved in any
or all of these opportunities. Some of
these offerings are class retreats, mis-
sion trips, liturgy committee, Eucha-
ristic Adoration, Community Service
Day, music ministry, daily prayer,
liturgies, prayer services, reconciliation
services, Stations of the Cross, Kairos
retreats, TEC retreats, Aid to Women,
Kids Against Hunger, Lifesavers (pro-
life committee) and Ministry in Service
class. Xavier has provided support to
the Catholic Worker House, Birthright,
the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities
and numerous other charitable organi-
zations. Our goal is to provide oppor-
tunities for our students to make their
Catholic faith come to life.
Our Catholic faith is the foundation of everything we do here at Xavier High School.
We understand that as parents, you are the first teachers of your children in the ways of faith.
We strive to support you in your efforts to raise faith-filled young adults.

SUMMER RE-CREATION OF
THE SPIRIT!
Summer is almost upon us. Summer
affords a more relaxed schedule and
hopefully some recreation which leads
to re-CREATION of the spirit. Make
some time this summer for new spiri-
tual experience. You could try an hour
of adoration each week in the St. Pat’s
chapel, you could make a pilgrimage to
West Bend to the Grotto of Redemp-
tion, you could attend daily mass at
your parish or any one that fits into your
schedule. On any vacation you take,
make your faith part of it...visit a lo-
cal faith attraction, attend Mass in the
towns you visit, use car/airplane time
to read reflective material or listen to
spiritual podcasts (may I suggest Father
Mike Schmitz!) Make time to read a
good book to help you grow spiritually.
Stop in Campus Ministry for some rec-
ommendations! Whatever you do, don’t
forget that everything is a gift from God.
See the face of Christ in all your activi-
ties of the summer!

of the retreat you would like. The speak-
ers are amazing! The music is inspira-
tional! There are specific talks for teens,

see you (and family & friends) there!

New Door Security Procedures
In our continued efforts to provide a safe environment, Xavier High School will
implement a new door security system beginning, Monday, April 9. This se-
curity system will allow us to see all those requesting entry to the building and
require all visitors to “buzz-in” to gain entrance to the building. The buzzer
panels are located at the Main Entrance doors.
THE SCHEDULE FOR DOORS WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:
• UNTIL 7:50 A.M. EACH DAY, ALL MAIN DOORS AND THE ACTIVITIES
ENTRANCE WILL BE UNLOCKED AND NO “BUZZ-IN” WILL
BE NECESSARY.
• AT 7:50 A.M. EACH DAY, ALL DOORS WILL BE LOCKED AND THE ONLY
ACCESS TO THE BUILDING WILL BE THROUGH THE MAIN LOBBY
DOORS (BOTH THE EAST AND SOUTH-FACING DOORS) USING THE
“BUZZ-IN” PROCEDURE.
• ALL MAIN DOORS AND THE ACTIVITIES ENTRANCE WILL BE RE-
OPENED AT SCHOOL DISMISSAL (E.G. 2:45 P.M. ON REGULAR
SCHOOL DAYS).
THE PROCEDURE TO ENTER THE BUILDING
DURING SCHOOL HOURS WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:
• APPROACH THE DOOR ON THE FAR RIGHT OF THE EAST OR SOUTH
MAIN DOORS.
• PRESS THE BUZZER AND WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO WELCOME YOU.
• GIVE YOUR NAME AND THE REASON YOU ARE COMING INTO
THE BUILDING.
• THE DOOR WILL BE OPENED FROM ONE OF OUR OFFICES.
• REPORT DIRECTLY TO THE MAIN OFFICE TO SIGN IN.
We will be monitoring these procedures carefully to identify potential
challenges that may arise. We will develop plans to address those challenges
should they arise.
While we realize that no procedure can guarantee 100% safety, we believe this
practice will add a layer of security to enhance student safety.

15. Jazz Band Prepares for Iowa
Jazz Championships
Not to be lost among the school records being broken this
year in our activities programs is the success our Jazz Band
One is experiencing. Xavier JBO won our band program’s
first (and then second) band competition in school history
this season! After placing 1st at the NEIBA District Jazz
Festival last month, was an automatic qualifier for the Iowa
Jazz Championships! The IJC took place on April 5th at Iowa
State University -- the Saints took home 3rd place in Class 3A
with Joseph Bioche, Caleb Burken, Tristen Perreault and Cal-
lie Fay earning Outstanding Performance awards!
WHAT’S WITH THE PINEAPPLE?
Also, ever wonder what’s up with JBO and the pineapple
that always joins them on stage? Prior to performing at
the 2014 Tallcorn Jazz Festival at UNI, an XHS jazz student
purchased a miniature pineapple from the concession stand,
brought it on stage, and the Saints delivered their best
performance in program history. Thus, the legend of the
pineapple was born as it has made its customary appearance
alongside JBO for every performance since.
Xavier JBO has qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships
every year since 2014 -- prior to that year, Xavier had never
qualified for the IJC (or placed in the top 3 at any competi-
tion). One jazz band student has the honor of being the
“pineapple keeper” for the season (a responsibility that gets
passed down at the band’s final rehearsal of the year). Now
you know the “power of the pineapple!”

Working with the CRPD to Make a
Difference in Our Community...
Xavier High School juniors, Maddie Abu-Nameh & Camryn Kauffman,
recently orchestrated a drive to collect items which are often overlooked
when considering the needs of the less fortunate: shoes and socks. More
than 600 pairs of lightly-used shoes and nearly 700 new pairs of socks
were collected between Xavier High School, LaSalle Middle School and
Regis Middle School.
The socks were donated to the Cedar Rapids Police Department on March
22nd. In turn, the CRPD will distribute the socks to the homeless in our
community.
After Maddie and Camryn conducted research, they determined that the
shoes should be donated to Soles4Souls, a national non-profit organi-
zation which supplies donated shoes to those who need them, but are
unable to purchase them. Those shoes will be delivered to a Soles4Souls
collection site this spring.
Maddie and Camryn were inspired by 2016 Xavier High School graduate,
Daniel Richardson, who organized an effort to collect used athletic equip-
ment for area youth who did not have access to it. They wanted to focus
their efforts on addressing a need that may not be discussed as much, but
a need that could be met knowing that many people have old shoes they
no longer wear in their house. The original plan was to focus on shoes,
but the students expanded their efforts upon discovering a need in our
community for socks and that the CRPD could serve as a way to distribute
them to those who need them most.

Xavier Awarded Archbishop Kucera Grant
for Tuition Assistance
The Xavier High School Board of Education is the recipient of $19,221 from the
Archbishop Kucera Grant Awards from the Archdiocese of Dubuque Educational
Development Fund. The grant was awarded for tuition assistance to those families who
can least afford the cost of attending a Catholic School. A portion of the grant was also
directed towards tuition assistance for minority students who qualify for Federal School
Lunch Program. Awards for these two programs totaled $745,000 for the 2017/18
program year.
The Archbishop Kucera Grant Awards annually provides $100,000 for faith formation
resources and leadership development for faith formation leaders, catechists, Catholic
school administrators and teachers. The grant also covers one third of the program cost
for adults enrolled in the Archdiocesan IMPACT Program.
The Archdiocesan Educational Development Fund was developed for the purpose of
supporting the educational programs of the Archdiocese. This is the thirty first year that
grants have been awarded. Over 10 million dollars have been distributed since the Archdi-
ocesan Educational Development Fund was established. Grants are made possible through
the generous donations of contributors and parishioners throughout the Archdiocese.

Program Reminder
Hearing Screening
Grant Wood AEA will be providing their annual
hearing testing at Xavier Monday April 30th.
Students at Xavier are tested only if there is a
known history of ear problems or if the student
is new to the Xavier Catholic School System. If your student does
not meet those two criteria and you have hearing concerns and want
them screened, please contact Kris Naeve, School Nurse, at 294-
6635 Ext 318, or email kris.naeve@xaviersaints.org.
If you have a student with known hearing loss, history of ear prob-
lems, or if your student is new to the Xavier Catholic School System
and you do not want their hearing tested, you need to indicate in
writing to Kris Naeve at Xavier High School who will then notify the
school audiologist of your request.

Xavier Foundation Updates
COMING NEXT:
2018 ALUMNI APPEAL
TO FOCUS ON TEACHERS
The Xavier Foundation is excited to be
putting a new spin on its annual Alumni
Appeal. This year we are seeking stories
from our alumni about their favorite
teacher(s) and why he/she made a last-
ing impact on them.
ALUMNI: We are asking for you to
share your stories of your favorite
high school teacher at Regis, La-
Salle or Xavier and why that teacher
has had such a profound impact on
you. We also are asking for your
generosity to give back to our cur-
rent teachers. Funds raised from the
2018 Alumni Appeal will help Xavier
continue to provide a first-class learn-
ing environment … for students and
teachers alike!
The Power Of Your Story…
Our Alumni Board will select three of
the most powerful and poignant reflec-
tions of a high school teacher’s impact
(one teacher reflection from LaSalle,
Regis and Xavier will be selected). The
three teachers who are selected will
have $1,000 donated to the depart-
ment in which they served, so that their
impact can continue to be felt directly
by our current high school students.

HAPPENING NOW:
2018 BUSINESS APPEAL
The Xavier Foundation launched the 2018 Business Appeal on Tuesday,
February 6, 2018. This year, we are asking our supporting businesses to
help us “connect the dots” as Xavier works to develop our young people …
many of whom will remain or return to be stewards of our local community.
Dave Wright, owner operator of Dave Wright Nissan and Subaru Dealership
and Brad Joens, Vice President Commercial Banking, Hills Bank & Trust Co.
are serving as campaign chairs of the Appeal.
Wright and Joens will lead 60 volunteers with the task to visit with more
than 300 local businesses and ask for financial support of Xavier High
School. Your gift is important and needed to help make a Xavier educa-
tion affordable to the Cedar Rapids/Marion metro area families. Here is why
some of our volunteers commit themselves to this effort:

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTING BUSINESSES!
As the Xavier Foundation’s 2018 Business Appeal continues into the Spring, we stop to say “Thank You” to those businesses who have
committed their support to Xavier and its mission! Below are the businesses which supported our 2017 Business Appeal.
We invite you to support these outstanding organizations throughout the year!
Jump On Board!
We thank the many businesses
who have already committed
their support to the Xavier

Appeal! If you are interested in

of a business that would like to
get involved), please contact
Lynn Jump at
