LA Hebrew High School 70th Anniversary GALA Sponsors Presentation

  1. 1. January, 2019 Dear LAHHS Family, I am writing to you on behalf of this evening’s honorees, as a Shaliach (emissary) with a few reflections on what it is like to serve as Head of School at Los Angeles Hebrew High School. The HOS role at Hebrew High is like no other that I have known in my years of educational leadership. First, LAHHS is a school without walls. With no place to actually call “home,” there is a certain amount of scrambling that goes on year-in and year-out. In my day, the “scramble” was always to make sure that campuses were located where the students were — or at least not too far away. Second, LAHHS is about community. It is a community of students — many of whom become lifelong friends. It is about a community of faculty — a more dedicated and focused faculty would be hard to find! Third, LAHHS is bout partnerships, between the school and Tel Aviv, between the school and Camp Ramah, between the school and USY, and between the school and its feeder schools. Partnerships are complicated, but in the long-run, the school thrives when these partnerships (and others) thrive. LAHHS is, to the best of my knowledge, the only “supplemental” (after-school) program that is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. This remains a jewel in its crown. Each of the LAHHS Heads of School had their own personal “causes” that became their school “flag” to be waived at all times. Whether it was building from scratch, or professionalization and publications, or accreditation, or (as always) “growing” the school, we can all be proud of the work that we have all done to ensure a bright and hopeful future for LAHHS going forward. I am sure that my colleagues join me in that sentiment. On behalf of the 70th Anniversary honorees, I wish our beloved LAHHS much strength and wisdom going forward! Sincerely, Ben Zion (Benzy) Kogen Head of School, 1990-99
