2. Principalâs Corner: 2015-2016...Here We Go
Welcome to the 2015-16 school year,
Xavierâs eighteenth. A very special
welcome to the parents of our freshmen
and transfer students, as well as those
families hosting exchange students. We
look forward to having you as part of a
very special community - the Xavier fam-
ily as we move forward.
The faculty, staff and
administration worked
hard this summer to
prepare to welcome
705 âSaintsâ back to
school. Follow-
ing a terrific
2014-15, weâre
looking forward
to another out-
standing year of
academics, ac-
tivities, worship
and service!
Once again,
we will look
to our seniors to provide the leadership
to make that happen.
Our theme this year is, âWith humility
comes wisdom and holiness.â We look
forward to partnering with you and your
students to bring that theme to life. As
humble servants, we can truly make a dif-
ference in the lives of others.
We are pleased to introduce five new
faculty members this year: Mr. Nate
Greene (Science), Ms. Jenny Murtha
(English), Mrs. Alissa Sabers (English),
Ms. Beth Samek (Theology) and Ms.
Kristin Soukup (Theology). Ms Murtha,
Ms. Samek and Ms. Soukup are all Xavier
alumni. Ms. Samek served as a long-
term substitute last semester and joins
us as a full-time staff member this year.
Please join us in welcoming these out-
standing teachers to our community!
As you know, we now in our third year of
Xavierâs Digital Learning Environment.
Each of our students has an iPad to use
in and out of school to enhance their
educational experience. There is no
denying that we live in a âdevice worldâ
and we believe this initiative assists our
students in becoming better prepared
for that world. We learned much in our
first two years of the DLE and have made
some changes as a result. Parents now
have a choice regarding off-campus
filtering. Parents have also been in-
structed how to set their own restrictions
on student iPads to limit distractions
and keep the focus on academics. It is
important for all of us â teachers, admin-
istrators and parents to continually stress
that the iPad is intended for academic
use and the majority of time on the de-
vice should be dedicated to class work.
Along with the benefit of this learning
device comes the responsibility of its
use. We expect that all students handle
their devices with care, respect the de-
vices of others and use the devices in a
productive and moral way.
The feedback from students and teach-
ers about the benefits of the âXcel Hourâ
has helped us to expand the number

of âXcel Hourâ periods. These opportunities provide time for
freshmen mentoring, academic assistance/make-up work and
club/organization meetings. We also use it for surveys, sign-
ups and other needed student activity that used to interrupt
classes. With students so busy, the âXcel Hourâ gives them an
opportunity to âcatch up,â âget ahead,â or âstay on track.â We
are excited about the results in our first year and look forward
to the positive impact the extra opportunities will provide!
This year we are very excited to introduce the âXavier Xperi-
enceâ for our incoming freshmen. This course, which meets on
opposite days from Fitness/Wellness, will provide our freshmen
with valuable opportunities to develop their organizational,
leadership and study skills. The goals of the course are to as-
sist students in their transition to high school, help them under-
stand the Xavier culture, help them get off to a good start and
help them make the most of their high school years. We are
blessed that Mrs. Richmond has agreed to develop and teach
the course. Those students who are not enrolled in Fitness/
Wellness class will spend time in the Xcel Hours taking part in
some of the activities of the âXavier Xperience.â
We know that 2014-15 year was a very successful one â in faith
development, in academics, in activities, and in service. Know-
ing our Xavier community, knowing our faculty and staff, and
knowing our students, I am confident that we will build on that
momentum and find ways to show that 2015-16 can be our
best ever!
Sincerely,
Tom Keating

and place them in the collection box just across from the
main office. Letâs make this winter a comfortable one
for everyone!
Donate Used Sporting Good Items
Xavier senior, Daniel Richardson, has organized a collection for high
quality used sporting gear. These items will then be distributed to
Cedar Rapids area non-profits with the goal of eliminating barriers to par-
ticipation in youth sports. The equipment can be from any sport and may
include items such as cleats, shoes, bats, balls, or gloves. All items should
be in good working condition. Items will be collected in labeled bins at the
Xavier vs. Wahlert football game on Friday, Oct. 9 (Homecoming). Thank
you for your help!
Fill the Truck for MCO!
The Future Saints Football program is con-
ducting itâs 8th Annual âFill the Truckâ food

Pantry during the Xavier vs. Wahlert football game
on Friday, Oct. 9 at Saints Field. Please bring a bag
of non-perishable food items to the game, fill the
truck and support those in our community that are
struggling. Every bit helps. Thank you in advance
for your participation!
There are many way you can get involved to help those in need as the weather begins to grow
colder this fall. Below are just a few ways at Xavier you can help to support those in our
community who are less fortunate. Please consider donating these items!

Saints Travel to See Pope Franics
A total of 29 Xavier students and 9 chaperones will board
a charter bus on Thursday, September 24 to begin their
pilgrimage to see Pope Francis in Philadelphia. The Xavier
group will attend the Festival of Families on the Ben Franklin
Parkway on Saturday. The festival is a major event that is part
of the World Meeting of Families gathering in Philadelphia.
Pope Francis is expected to address the festival crowd at ap-
proximately 7:30 p.m.
The group also will attend the closing Mass for the World
Meeting of Families on Sunday, which will be celebrated by
Pope Francis. The papal Mass will be held outside the Phila-
delphia Museum of Art.
âAs soon as we found out that the Holy Father would be in
the United States, we knew we had to find a way to take a
group of pilgrims,â says Jody Esker, Campus Ministry Di-
rector for Xavier High School. âWe will all be blessed and
enriched by this experience of sharing our beautiful Catholic
faith with millions of other pilgrims and to witness the Holy
Father in Philadelphia.â
âI am very excited to go to Philadelphia to see Pope Fran-
cis,â says Xavier senior, Katie Neumyer. âI am most looking
forward to the papal Mass because I think it will be amazing
to see the Pope leading 1.5 million people in Mass.â
âI have never seen the students from Xavier this excited for a
trip before,â says Xavier senior, K.J. Giles. âThe hallways are
buzzing with anticipation for the Pope Pilgrimage.â
The group will stay at the YMCAâs Camp Ockanickon in
Medford, NJ and travel approximately 25 miles east to the
Philadelphia Sports Complex, which will be used as primary
parking for buses over the weekend, and then travel to the
Benjamin Franklin Parkway for both events. The bus will re-
turn to Cedar Rapids at approximately 3 p.m. on Monday.

Family Connection
Log in, bookmark it, make it a regular
conversation at the dinner table. There
is a new tool at your disposal to help
with college and career planning con-
versations with your student and it is
called Family Connection. This summer
the guidance office implemented a new
web-based tool for helping students
investigate colleges and careers, request
college application materials and make
the entire process of applying to college
a whole lot easier.
âJoey, what do you want to be when you
grow up?â Family Connectionâs Career
Interest Profiler can help with that.
âMy student wants to study criminal pa-
thology. Which schools have programs
for this?â Family Connectionâs Super-
Match Tool is great for this!
âSam, you should really apply for some
scholarships.â The Scholarship List in
Family Connection makes research ap-
plying easy.
While students have been doing similar
assessments in Guidance classes for
years, Family Connection now offers par-
ents the opportunity to see the results.
No matter the grade level of your stu-
dent I encourage you to log in to Family
Connection and check out some of the
research tools that are available.
Parents of seniors â your students can
now request transcripts and letters of
recommendations through Family Con-
nection. Any time day or night they can
log in and request these materials and
receive notifications when they are sent.
We will be using Family Connection
tools with all grade levels throughout the
school year. Who knows they may even
come home with a list of schools for you
to visit with them during Spring Break!

The Training Room
Misti Johnson
Xavier Trainer
Meet Xavierâs Trainer:
Misti Johnson
Dear Xavier students and parents, my
name is Misti Johnson, Iâm the new
Xavier High School Athletic Trainer.
I started working the end of May, so
this will be my first fall at Xavier! I am a
native to Cedar Rapids where I gradu-
ated from Prairie High School and soon
made my journey through the Univer-
sity of Iowaâs prestigious athletic train-
ing program. I graduated May 2014
and have been working with a variety
of athletes since June 2014. I previ-
ously worked as an athletic trainer with
multiple club sports in the Cedar Falls
and Waterloo area through Accelerated
Physical Therapy. Now I work for Linn
County Physical Therapy.
Many people confuse athletic train-
ers with personal trainers or physical
therapists.
Athletic Trainers (ATs) are health care
professionals who collaborate with phy-
sicians to provide preventative services,
emergency care, clinical diagnosis,
therapeutic intervention and rehabilita-
tion of injuries and medical conditions.
Students who want to become certified
athletic trainers must earn a degree
from an accredited athletic training cur-
riculum. Accredited programs include
formal instruction in areas such as
injury/illness prevention, first aid and
emergency care, assessment of injury/
illness, human anatomy and physiology,
therapeutic modalities, and nutri-
tion. Classroom learning is enhanced
through clinical education experiencesâ
(NATA).
If your child gets hurt, they should
come see me as soon as possible. The
athletic training room is located near
the girls and boys locker rooms (by the
activities entrance of the school). My
hours are posted on the door, but in
general I am at Xavier from 2:30-4:30
except for days with sporting events
scheduled. If you have any questions
or concerns, please feel free to contact
me!

Update On Legislation for Stock
Epinephrine Pens For Schools
Update on Legislation for Stock Epinephrine for Schools Senate
File 462 relating to schools having stock epinephrine on hand
for emergencies was approved by Governor Branstad on April
24, 2015.
This is great news for schools. However, there is an Administra-
tive Rules Process that needs to take place in providing guid-
ance on how this File will be implemented. It can be a lengthy
process, and to date, this has not been completed. As soon as
we (schools) have been given approval through the Iowa Board
of Pharmacy and Administrative Rules Process, we will proceed
with having stock epinephrine at Xavier High School.
Until then, please be advised that we do not have stock epi-
nephrine in the clinic. If there are questions, please contact Kris
Naeve, School Nurse at kris.naeve@xaviersaints.org.
Xavier Blue Zone Garden Items Now
Available During Lunch
The new school garden, which is part of Xavierâs initiative to
become a Blue Zone-designated high school, now has items
available in the XHS cafeteria during lunch time at the salad
bar. Part of the gardenâs purpose was to serve as a âfarm-to-
schoolâ source of food, offering additional healthy options for
students as they eat school lunches. These items are marked by
a blue circle (pictured left).
Thank you to all students who helped to
build and maintain the garden!
