Welcome to Millennium’s inaugural Annual Report! Below you will find a few program highlights along with financial and philanthropic reporting for the 2020-21 school
year. Despite the many challenges last year presented, our incredible community continued to demonstrate resilience, flexibility and authentic support for one another.
This enabled us to provide our students with a high-quality whole-student education, while sustaining our focus on the mental and emotional wellbeing of those we
serve. Your steadfast partnership and generosity were a much-needed vote of confidence for our mission to provide innovative developmental experiences. We simply
could not create an aligned and inclusive culture, at school and at home, without you.
This report highlights the impact of our community’s generosity. Together we faced a continued pandemic that required unanticipated program redesigns, ongoing COVID
testing, and new facilities requirements. Despite the unparalleled uncertainty, our team, families and students vigorously embraced our school values of love, wisdom,
authenticity, and conscious action. Across our programs we remained dedicated to our mission, fostering inclusivity, wellbeing, spirituality, and character at times when
these were needed the most.
Your support allowed Millellennium to quickly adapt to virtual and hybrid learning modalities while enacting the health and safety measures necessary to re-open our
school quickly. Thanks to these efforts, sensible safety protocols were instituted, shepherding a new phase of fully in-person learning by November. In addition,
we were able to allocate over $800,000 in financial assistance, continuing our commitment to make a Millennium education accessible. Likewise, we increased our
investment in professional development and retention strategies to ensure we could attract and retain the highest quality Guides in the Bay Area.
In the end, we successfully completed our fifth year of operations. We were camping again, celebrating our second class of graduates, and reaching hundreds of
educators with our signature Forum program.
We are so grateful to all of the families, foundations, and local organizations that volunteered to support Millennium School and Millennium Forum. The commitment is
truly inspirational. On behalf of the amazing students and educators in our extended community, the Board of Trustees, and our colleagues… thank you.

since our inception, Millennium has sought to cultivate a diverse and
inclusive community, prioritizing tuition assistance to make a Millennium
education accessible to more families. Amongst our peer group of
San Francisco independent schools, we are proud to commit the highest
percentage of our operational budget to our Flexible Tuition Program
(24% in 2020-21). It is through the generous gifts of families and local donors
that we are able to make our robust and innovative program accessible to
families, and we are immensely grateful to everyone who contributed to
the Annual Fund.
Millennium provided financial assistance to 30% of our families in 2020-21,
making our unique program more accessible in what we recognize is
already one of the country's most expensive cities. In past years, financial
assistance has reached as much as 50% of our students. Millennium strives
to be a school that represents the city of San Francisco found directly outside
our school's walls: a city of different races and ethnicities, gender identities,
socioeconomic positions, sexual orientations, cultures, religions, nationalities,
to name a few. Our flexible tuition program, while not a solution to the
inequities that exist in our society, allows us to bridge the gap for many
families.

Our Guides are always learning, engaging in the same practices and habits
of mind we hope to instill in our students. Thanks to the ongoing support
of our generous donors through the Annual Fund, this learning occurs with a
variety of facilitators in a myriad of ways.
Sometimes professional development takes place altogether, with visits
from organizations like Amplify Restorative Justice, in immersive retreats
in preparation for the school year, or through ongoing support from our
mindfulness consultant, James Gallagher from IE Collaborative. Regular
collective experiences are built into our weekly staff meetings.
Other opportunities are highly individualized. Staff and guides alike are
supported in these endeavors: receiving one-on-one coaching, attending
conferences to deepen their knowledge of subject-specific content or
research-based best practices, participating in transformative retreats,
or becoming certified in particular modalities. In 2021 alone, our faculty
attended professional development in order to learn trauma-informed
approaches, deepen their mindfulness practices, develop anti-racist STEM
curricula, expand their social-emotional learning (SEL), and advance their
pedagogy. We are excited and grateful for these opportunities, and the
ability to carry our embodied knowledge into our classrooms and school
community.

In parallel with the strategic planning process, we aim to anticipate the
world our students will inhabit as adults and to prepare them for it. At the
very heart of competency-based learning is empowering students to think
critically and engage with their world with facility. We know that what is most
important to learn will still be meaningful in 20 years.
Ask a young learner in our community, and they’ll tell you that they’ve
already begun to see the impacts of the Academic Architecture project.
From a unified set of Habits of a Learner to the piloting of LiFT Learning,
students and staff are shifting their lenses to see learning as the building of
skills in a broader context.
With the generous support of Annual Fund donations, the Academic
Architecture project will continue to define our competencies:
developmentally, in higher-order thinking, and for social-emotional learning
(SEL). By codifying our instructional methods and working with guides,
students, and advisors to assess them, we will build a better model for not
only the students at Millennium but students beyond our walls as well.

social-emotional learning (SEL) is at the heart of our school. We work
intentionally each day to create a safe space where students are empowered
to understand and show up as their authentic selves. Our approach to
discipline, embracing restorative justice, keeps relationships, well-being,
and community at the center of our work through acknowledgment of harm
and repair. We know that prioritizing a student's well-being is essential
in their ability to engage in enriching learning experiences. Our alumni
regularly report that they gained self-confidence and awareness, resilience,
mindfulness skills, and a love for authentic learning during their time at
Millennium.
To create this unique environment, our staff regularly develop curricula,
engage in professional development trainings, utilize the support of experts
to guide and measure our work, and include the feedback and direction of
our entire community in the design process. You see this not only in Forum
and advisory, mindfulness, and Councils, but also in everyday Quests and
our real-world program. All of this is possible through the generous support
of our Annual Fund.

Millennium School, like all other schools and institutions, was caught off
guard when the world locked down in the Spring of 2020. In true Millennium
fashion, we came together, listened to each other, and worked diligently to
figure things out. We tapped into the generosity of our parents, our grant-
making partners, as well as the U.S. Government — applying for a PPP
loan — to ensure that all of our students and staff members, as well as
their families, felt safe, supported, and cared for. We set up an emergency
fund that helped meet families wherever they were, offering assistance with
school supplies, higher flexible tuition amounts, food, rent, and medicine.
We leveraged the brainpower of our educators to create dynamic online
classes that allowed for deeper learning as well as enough time away from
the screens to process what was occurring, especially for social time with
family and friends. We utilized new technologies, working to keep students
engaged in our experiential curriculum over Zoom.
When it was time to reimagine what in-person school would look like we
formed a school reopening task force composed of staff members, parents,
and subject matter experts in the summer of 2020. We made adjustments to
the physical space, thought through what lunch and recess would look like,
and created cohorts so that students and staff members would only interact
with their designated group. All of this was done by following the mandates
and directives from the CADPH - California Department of Public Health, the
SFDPH - San Francisco Department of Public Health as well as the CDC.

In pursuit of our mission to share innovative methods of instruction with
others, Millennium piloted its signature Forum program with educators
across the U.S. The program proved to be a valuable resource for teachers
seeking a peer-to-peer coaching circle to navigate the stress of the
pandemic.
Thanks to the efforts of Margaret Golden, Todd Holcomb, and 20+ trained
“Mentors”, Millennium’s online Forum program supported 179 educators
throughout the school-year. Third-party evaluation conducted at the end
of the year reported that participating in Forum has a significant impact on
educator well-being:

• Increase in Self-Efficacy
• Decrease in Anxiety
• Decrease in Negative Affect

Forum program, while attending to the mission and values of our organization.
Our operating budget reflects our priorities as a school, and we are proud to lead the way among Bay Area
schools in our commitment to socio-economic diversity through our flexible tuition program. As a young school
without an endowment, we depend on the generosity of our community for philanthropic support. This, along
with careful stewardship of our school’s finances, has placed us in a strong financial position.

  • 2. dear millennium community, Welcome to Millennium’s inaugural Annual Report! Below you will find a few program highlights along with financial and philanthropic reporting for the 2020-21 school year. Despite the many challenges last year presented, our incredible community continued to demonstrate resilience, flexibility and authentic support for one another. This enabled us to provide our students with a high-quality whole-student education, while sustaining our focus on the mental and emotional wellbeing of those we serve. Your steadfast partnership and generosity were a much-needed vote of confidence for our mission to provide innovative developmental experiences. We simply could not create an aligned and inclusive culture, at school and at home, without you. This report highlights the impact of our community’s generosity. Together we faced a continued pandemic that required unanticipated program redesigns, ongoing COVID testing, and new facilities requirements. Despite the unparalleled uncertainty, our team, families and students vigorously embraced our school values of love, wisdom, authenticity, and conscious action. Across our programs we remained dedicated to our mission, fostering inclusivity, wellbeing, spirituality, and character at times when these were needed the most. Your support allowed Millellennium to quickly adapt to virtual and hybrid learning modalities while enacting the health and safety measures necessary to re-open our school quickly. Thanks to these efforts, sensible safety protocols were instituted, shepherding a new phase of fully in-person learning by November. In addition, we were able to allocate over $800,000 in financial assistance, continuing our commitment to make a Millennium education accessible. Likewise, we increased our investment in professional development and retention strategies to ensure we could attract and retain the highest quality Guides in the Bay Area. In the end, we successfully completed our fifth year of operations. We were camping again, celebrating our second class of graduates, and reaching hundreds of educators with our signature Forum program. We are so grateful to all of the families, foundations, and local organizations that volunteered to support Millennium School and Millennium Forum. The commitment is truly inspirational.   • 4. since our inception, Millennium has sought to cultivate a diverse and inclusive community, prioritizing tuition assistance to make a Millennium education accessible to more families. Amongst our peer group of San Francisco independent schools, we are proud to commit the highest percentage of our operational budget to our Flexible Tuition Program (24% in 2020-21). It is through the generous gifts of families and local donors that we are able to make our robust and innovative program accessible to families, and we are immensely grateful to everyone who contributed to the Annual Fund. Millennium provided financial assistance to 30% of our families in 2020-21, making our unique program more accessible in what we recognize is already one of the country's most expensive cities. In past years, financial assistance has reached as much as 50% of our students. Millennium strives to be a school that represents the city of San Francisco found directly outside our school's walls: a city of different races and ethnicities, gender identities, socioeconomic positions, sexual orientations, cultures, religions, nationalities, to name a few. Our flexible tuition program, while not a solution to the inequities that exist in our society, allows us to bridge the gap for many families.   • 5. Our Guides are always learning, engaging in the same practices and habits of mind we hope to instill in our students. Thanks to the ongoing support of our generous donors through the Annual Fund, this learning occurs with a variety of facilitators in a myriad of ways. Sometimes professional development takes place altogether, with visits from organizations like Amplify Restorative Justice, in immersive retreats in preparation for the school year, or through ongoing support from our mindfulness consultant, James Gallagher from IE Collaborative. Regular collective experiences are built into our weekly staff meetings. Other opportunities are highly individualized. Staff and guides alike are supported in these endeavors: receiving one-on-one coaching, attending conferences to deepen their knowledge of subject-specific content or research-based best practices, participating in transformative retreats, or becoming certified in particular modalities. In 2021 alone, our faculty attended professional development in order to learn trauma-informed approaches, deepen their mindfulness practices, develop anti-racist STEM curricula, expand their social-emotional learning (SEL), and advance their pedagogy. We are excited and grateful for these opportunities, and the ability to carry our embodied knowledge into our classrooms and school community.   • 6. In parallel with the strategic planning process, we aim to anticipate the world our students will inhabit as adults and to prepare them for it. At the very heart of competency-based learning is empowering students to think critically and engage with their world with facility. We know that what is most important to learn will still be meaningful in 20 years. Ask a young learner in our community, and they’ll tell you that they’ve already begun to see the impacts of the Academic Architecture project. From a unified set of Habits of a Learner to the piloting of LiFT Learning, students and staff are shifting their lenses to see learning as the building of skills in a broader context. With the generous support of Annual Fund donations, the Academic Architecture project will continue to define our competencies: developmentally, in higher-order thinking, and for social-emotional learning (SEL). By codifying our instructional methods and working with guides, students, and advisors to assess them, we will build a better model for not only the students at Millennium but students beyond our walls as well. We work intentionally each day to create a safe space where students are empowered to understand and show up as their authentic selves. Our approach to discipline, embracing restorative justice, keeps relationships, well-being, and community at the center of our work through acknowledgment of harm and repair. We know that prioritizing a student's well-being is essential in their ability to engage in enriching learning experiences. Our alumni regularly report that they gained self-confidence and awareness, resilience, mindfulness skills, and a love for authentic learning during their time at Millennium. To create this unique environment, our staff regularly develop curricula, engage in professional development trainings, utilize the support of experts to guide and measure our work, and include the feedback and direction of our entire community in the design process. You see this not only in Forum and advisory, mindfulness, and Councils, but also in everyday Quests and our real-world program.   • 8. Millennium School, like all other schools and institutions, was caught off guard when the world locked down in the Spring of 2020. In true Millennium fashion, we came together, listened to each other, and worked diligently to figure things out. We tapped into the generosity of our parents, our grant- making partners, as well as the U.S. Government — applying for a PPP loan — to ensure that all of our students and staff members, as well as their families, felt safe, supported, and cared for. We set up an emergency fund that helped meet families wherever they were, offering assistance with school supplies, higher flexible tuition amounts, food, rent, and medicine. We leveraged the brainpower of our educators to create dynamic online classes that allowed for deeper learning as well as enough time away from the screens to process what was occurring, especially for social time with family and friends. We utilized new technologies, working to keep students engaged in our experiential curriculum over Zoom. When it was time to reimagine what in-person school would look like we formed a school reopening task force composed of staff members, parents, and subject matter experts in the summer of 2020. We made adjustments to the physical space, thought through what lunch and recess would look like, and created cohorts so that students and staff members would only interact with their designated group. All of this was done by following the mandates and directives from the CADPH - California Department of Public Health, the SFDPH - San Francisco Department of Public Health as well as the CDC. In pursuit of our mission to share innovative methods of instruction with others, Millennium piloted its signature Forum program with educators across the U.S. The program proved to be a valuable resource for teachers seeking a peer-to-peer coaching circle to navigate the stress of the pandemic. Thanks to the efforts of Margaret Golden, Todd Holcomb, and 20+ trained “Mentors”, Millennium’s online Forum program supported 179 educators throughout the school-year.
