Sports & Arts in Schools
Foundation Presents:
C.S. 134 Monthly Newsletter
September 2015
In This Issue
Dear Parents & Families,
On behalf of the Sports & Arts in Schools
Foundation staff at C.S. 134, I am happy to
welcome you to the 2015-16 school year! We
are looking forward to a productive
partnership with you to ensure our children
can achieve their highest potential. We
recognize that in order to be successful in
school, our children need support from both
the home and school. We know a strong
partnership with you will make a great
difference in your child’s education.
As educators and caretakers of children, we
believe the after school and summer
program settings are essential to the well-
being of every child’s education. Afterschool
and summer learning programs are filling the
invaluable role of providing essential
services—such as a safe and supervised
environment, academically enriching
activities, healthy snacks and meals, and
caring and supportive mentors—to children
and families most in need of support. The
need for these afterschool and summer
learning programs is especially vital in
communities that are experiencing higher
levels of poverty, homelessness and food
insecurity, and are facing disparities in
education and access to extracurricular
activities.
The Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation
program at Community School 134 strives to
provide high quality programming that
bridges not only academics with athletics
and arts but the school day with the after
school program. This newsletter was created
with not only the students but the teachers
and community’s needs in mind as well. It is
meant to shed light on the diverse and
complex programming we provide to our
students and to showcase what’s in store in
the upcoming year. But most importantly it
reveals the intricate ways we not only
provide academic support and enriching
activities, but how every activity functions
together to create an extended day of
engaged and interactive learning.
The wonderful SASF staff and I feel
privileged to be a part of this school family.
We thank you for your support and look
forward to getting to know all of you!
Sincerely,
Ms. Amara Davila

My name is Kathy Correa, I am currently a
parent at C.S. 134 and a member of the
Parent Teacher Association.
Sports and Arts: After School
Program
I am thankful to have Sports and Arts
Afterschool program in my child’s school,
because I do not have to worry about my
child's safety while I am working. I am always
confident that he’s in a safe environment.
Sports and Arts is more than an afterschool
program, the staff has become a second
family. They provide all students with not
just a safe environment, but also with
Homework help and a lot of fun activities.
Activities include theater, yoga, dance,
sports, and art. I would also like to add how
pleased I am with the partnership between
Sports and Arts and C.S. 134 PTA
committee. I am glad to have joined such an
amazing team, I couldn’t be happier.
I would also like to inform everyone that
although the month of September was
extremely busy with transitioning from
summer vacation to the start of the school
year, we were able to make sure all our
children kept smiles on their faces and our
parents were well informed. Our goals are
always set to make sure our children have
everything they deserve, and that our
parents are always happy.
Upcoming Events
For the month of October, the PTA and the
parent coordinator, Rebecca Cherry has set
up a breast and cervical cancer
awareness workshop which will take place in
the library on October 14th at 9:30am.
We would like all 5th grade parents to
remember that there will be two mandatory
meetings on the 13th and 27th of October it
is very important for parents to attend.
We also have a “Walk to Stop Diabetes”
which our children will help support. The
walk will be taking place in the school yard
on the 27th and the 28th of October.
To conclude our month we will be having a
safety meeting the 30th of October. This is
the perfect time for all parents to express
their concerns regarding safety issues.
My name is Carrie Isaacman and I am the
Drama Specialist at CS 134. I will work with
all grades and we plan to work on a
culminating event for the spring. So far, we
are starting with collaborative theater as a
way to talk about what theater is and what it
means to create theater for our community
how it reflects our feelings about how we feel
about what theater is.
We are moving through collaborative theater
to Newspaper Theater which is a
collaborative event where students read a
selection, interpret it and groups respond
through tableaux. In the upcoming week we
will start to work with Shakespeare’s Poetry
through and edited version of ‘Midsummer
Night’s Dream’.
On the subject of teaching theater to my
amazing group of students, I believe in the
power of theater as being a catalyst for
change through observation, construction of
literacy and focus on action. I look forward
to the year and am so glad to be a part of
Sports and Arts.

Mission &
Vision
Mission
We, at C.S. 134, believe all students can
learn when provided appropriately
rigorous and challenging instruction in a
respectful and safe learning
environment, with strong parental
involvement. When all stakeholders
collaboratively provide students with
these elements, it will shape and nurture
our students into confident individuals
who take pride in their academic success
and personal growth.
Vision
To ensure that each and every child that
passes through the doors of Community
School 134 is provided with the highest
quality education and necessary skills for
college and career. To develop in every
child, a love for learning that lasts
throughout their lives.
Bridging the Missions
The goal of SASF is to work in tandem
with the school day administrators,
parents and teachers to gain a better
understanding of the needs of each
student. We aim to do so by
incorporating the following into our
program:
1. Identifying common core
threads that need attention and
working with students to
develop those academic skills
so that they can meet or exceed
the standard.
2. Providing opportunities for
community service learning
whether within the C.S. 134
community or in the South
Bronx area.
3. Organizing opportunities for
students to showcase their
work by way of performances,
art gallery viewings, athletic
competitions and/or science
fairs.
4. Engaging families through
interactive programming that
aims to highlight the
importance of health and
wellness as provide information
on the activities offered.

A new addition to SASF at C.S.
134 is the Peer Nominated
Student of the Month!
The SASF student of the month is
chosen based on qualities such as
character, leadership, and citizenship,
not necessarily academics. The student
of the month must be a diligent student,
completing his/her assignments on time,
showing strong effort to learn the
subjects. The student of the month
demonstrates excellent behavior inside
and outside the classroom, is well
mannered, and respectful to both peers
and teachers. The student of the month
displays excellent citizenship by aligning
him/herself with the Student Behavior
Contract.
Lastly, the student of the month shows
exemplar character through his/her
compassion, honesty, trustworthiness,
responsibility, optimism, and loyalty in
creating a positive school environment.
The most important part of this process
is that students are nominated by their
peers. It’s an opportunity for students to
learn and express appreciation for each
other’s positive attributes and to
celebrate the exemplar students in our
program.
Student Selection Criteria:
The selection criteria for the Student of
the Month are not to be based on any
one characteristic of a student.
However, we would like for the
person(s) nominating the student to
consider the following criteria when
evaluating a student:
• Character/Attitude/Disposition
• Citizenship/Follows Student
Behavior Contract
• Attendance
• Participation
• Leadership/Responsibility
• Academics (not necessarily an “A”
student)
• Good work ethic/Diligence
• Discipline/Conduct (no
infractions)
Be sure to check out our Student of the
Month Bulletin Board (coming soon) to
get a sneak peek at who these
Champions are!
CONGRATULATIONS!

We are excited to announce Yoga as an
activity for this season! The students
have been taking the class for a few
weeks now and seem to really love it.
Here’s a short description from our Yoga
instructor, Loida Manfredy:
Objective
The focus for this Yoga experience is to
have fun with movement. We move
away from an emphasis on perfecting
alignment and explore the many ways
are bodies are fluid and strong.
Over the course of the Season, students
will explore 14 Main Yoga Concepts.
These concepts will give them a range of
movement and widen their scope of how
their bodies can be controlled.
14 Concepts:
1. Sun Salutation
2. Extended Side Angle
3. Frog Pose
4. Freeze Poses
5. Full Boat Pose
6. Goddess Pose
7. King Cobra Pose
8. Legs (up the wall)
