Dear Friends,
I am filled with excitement as I write a letter of introduction
to you as a new member of the Office of Advancement
at St. Lucy’s Priory High School. As the Director of
Advancement and External Relations, I am looking forward
to many opportunities this year where I can get to know
members of the community — alumnae, alumnae parents,
current families, students and friends. I am getting to
know the beautiful campus as well as all of the amazing
individuals who I have the pleasure of working with
every day.
Working for a Catholic, all-girls, high school is a privilege
that I hold close to my heart. I am passionate about the
education that is provided for the students at St. Lucy’s.
The ability to empower students through a comprehensive,
college-preparatory curriculum has been carried out year
after year and was evident when I attended the most
recent commencement ceremony for the Class of 2015.
These young women are prepared for the opportunities
and challenges that are in front of them because of the
time they spent at St. Lucy’s learning in a supportive and
religious environment.
It is an exciting time at your Alma Mater! St. Lucy’s
is embarking on an ambitious project this year to reduce
the School’s carbon footprint. The School is investing in
solar panels that will reduce energy costs and demonstrate
the ways we can all do our part for the environment. At the
same time, we are making improvements to WiFi access
and networking on campus. You can read more about
these improvements for the 2015–2016 school year in this
issue of the Alumnae Newsletter.
I like to think of high school as a second home. It is a
place where girls become young women and they form
friendships that will last a lifetime. I look forward to hearing
stories from alumnae about the friendships they have
all carried with them, close to their hearts, throughout
the years.
The holidays are around the corner and St. Lucy’s
is happy to embrace the season with the annual “Home
for the Holidays” Christmas Boutique. I hope you will
join us in this time-honored tradition and enjoy the many
opportunities to get a jump-start on your holiday shopping.
The accomplishments of individual students and various
departments on campus are highlighted in this issue and
is a testament to the well-rounded, Catholic education
that is offered at St. Lucy’s. Whether we are recognizing
a student athlete in our community or the strides being
made by the Music Department, we are blessed to
have amazing programs, dedicated teachers and eager
students who utilize all the opportunities afforded them
by a St. Lucy’s education.

St. Lucy’s Priory High School joined in the Homecoming
festivities at Damien High School. The events kicked off on
Friday, September 25th with a Middle School Pre-Game BBQ
for students that are interested in attending St. Lucy’s, Damien
or Pomona Catholic. The BBQ was a success with over 200
prospective 7th and 8th graders in attendance. “Over the last
five years, this event has provided future Regents with the
opportunity to experience the tri-school community first-hand
prior to making their decision about attending St. Lucy’s,” says
Katie Rossi, Director of Admissions and Public Relations.
“In addition to eating dinner with new friends, they can capture
memories in a photo booth, meet the Spartan Spirit Squad and
Regiment, enjoy a competitive football game and witness the
halftime tradition and crowning of the new queens.”
At the same time, alumnae were officially invited to participate
in a tailgate party prior to the football game that featured a
food truck from In-N-Out. St. Lucy’s alumnae were welcomed
to Damien and enjoyed the pre-game festivities with families
and friends from both high schools.
St. Lucy’s students Jessica Haddad, Remy Hogan and Hailey
Zavala were recognized as the Homecoming Princesses during
halftime at the game. Hailey Zavala was crowned as Queen.
The Damien Spartans won the game against the South Hills
Huskies and the final score was 41-7.
Following the victory, the celebration continued with a 21 and
over party for alumnae from all three high schools. Attendees
were treated to a live band and DJ, beer and wine, and
appetizers. “It was an amazing evening and so nice to see
St. Lucy’s alumnae come out and be a part of Damien’s
Homecoming,” says Summer Williams, Director of Advancement
and External Relations. “We plan on continuing this tradition
in the years to come.”

The 2014–15 Annual Giving Campaign was a tremendous success,
raising more than $47,000. This year, we are excited to announce plans
to support technology enhancements and the long-term sustainability
of our school. These improvements include two projects that will be
completed during the 2015-16 school year including upgraded Wi-Fi
services and the installation of solar panels. These projects will not only
help our school’s learning and working environments, but also create
cost savings for years to come.
“St. Lucy’s is investing today in technologies that will sustain our
school in the long run,” says Mike Kowalski, Consultative Board Chair.
“The support of our alumnae is vital in helping us reach our goals.”
The upgraded Wi-Fi services will include faster and more effective
communications. Faculty, staff and students will be able to work more
efficiently and utilize all the learning tools that are available today
on the Internet.
Solar panels will be installed on the roof of the main building, providing
electricity for the entire campus. Because the school will be leasing
the panels, St. Lucy’s will be able to see cost savings within the first
year of use.
“Solar energy provides a way for us to significantly lower our electricity
costs, and provide cost savings well into St. Lucy’s future,” says Principal
Gina Giuliucci. “And, while both of these projects are moving forward,
we are also seeking the support of our alumnae and alumnae parents
to help off-set project costs.”
In the coming month, you will be receiving more information about how
you can support our Technology Enhancement Campaign. Our current
fundraising goal is $75,000 to help ensure that our Wi-Fi upgrades and
solar project remain on track for this year. Any amount you can donate
toward our goal is greatly appreciated.

Chamber Singers
Receive Invitation
to Perform in London
St. Lucy’s Chamber Singers were formally invited to
perform in the New Year’s Day Parade and Festival in
London in December of 2016. Lord Mayor Cllr. Robert
Davis greeted the students, faculty, parents and other
guests on Thursday, October 1st in a formal ceremony
that took place in the RRC on campus.
Cllr. Davis has been a Westminster City Councillor in
London since 1982 and is currently Deputy Leader of the
Council for Planning and Special Events. Cllr. Davis is
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Open Air Theatre,
Regents Park and is a Trustee of the Savoy Educational
Trust and Mousetrap Theatre Projects. He visited St. Lucy’s
as part of his tour to the United States to select a number
of groups that will be invited to take part in the festival.
Cllr. Davis was welcomed to St. Lucy’s Priory High School
with a performance given by the Chamber Singers, led
by Choir Director Mr. James Plunkett. The choir was
thrilled to perform for the esteemed guests including
Ms. Karen Davis, Mayor of the City of Glendora. The
Chamber Singers were officially invited to perform in
London and Mr. Plunkett is very happy that the students
have the opportunity to participate. “The students need
an outlet for their creative talents. They learn a lot from
being a part of a group that counts on them and depends
on them to be the best they can be,” says Mr. Plunkett.
The Chamber Singers were created during the
2013–2014 school year, when Mr. Plunkett developed
the idea of having a choir, and the group has performed
successfully and flourished ever since. With an invitation
to perform at this level in front of an international audience,
the program is reaching new heights and St. Lucy’s is
looking forward to the future for the two choir programs
at the School: the Chamber Singers and the Treble Choir.
“Although the classes are demanding in terms of the
expectations that are placed upon them, they are also fun,”
he says.
The Choral Director for the festival is Justin Doyle who
says, “Singing is something which brings people together
from all over the world, in the most wonderful shared
language. My hope for this festival is that some of my
own enthusiasm for choral singing will brush off on the
young people participating.” Mr. Doyle is an accomplished
conductor with several different choral groups. He is the
Principal Conductor of Manchester Chamber Choir, the
Manchester University Chorus as well as the Musical
Director of Opera North Children’s Chorus.
The package for attendees includes airfare, hotel
accommodations, guided walking tours to London’s
famous landmarks, a New Year’s Celebration and many
other educational outings.

alumnae to join in the opportunity to travel to London for
the festival. The inclusive dates are December 27, 2016 –

Bryan and Debi Jacobs are the proud parents of
Jenna ’15 and Lauren who graduated from Ontario
Christian High School in 2013. Their experience is not
unlike other families at St. Lucy’s. “My favorite part of being
a St. Lucy’s parent was knowing how much my daughter
enjoyed the school as well as knowing that she was
receiving a quality education,” says Debi.
As a student, Jenna was an active member of the
St. Lucy’s Dance Team as well as the Damien Spartan
Spirit Squad. She was a National Honor Society member
and also enjoyed the Art Club. According to her mom,
she enjoyed every aspect of her high school experience,
especially the opportunities to spend time with her
friends. Jenna is confident that St. Lucy’s prepared her
academically and she is enjoying her first semester at
Azusa Pacific University. “The work load at St. Lucy’s
and the amount of homework definitely prepared me for
college. I learned time management skills and how to
balance work with fun,” says Jenna.
Debi was highly involved as a parent in the Boutique and
is very proud of her work as co-chair of the Children’s
Workshoppe in 2014. “We re-vamped the entire
Workshoppe and added new activities for children including
a Christmas cookie decorating station as well as a station
to create paper garland décor for the Christmas tree we
had in that room,” says Debi. There were many other ways
Debi enhanced the Children’s Workshoppe, including a hot
chocolate station where little shoppers could fill a mason
jar with hot cocoa mix and other toppings, an ornament
decorating station and the list goes on and on. “I enjoyed
the festivities that surrounded Boutique and BASH because
it was a pleasure to see the entire school working together
for the greater good,” she says.
As active parents within the community, the Jacobs also
felt a responsibility to participate in the Growing For You
Fund over the years. “Debi and I felt it was important to
help supplement the cost of tuition at St. Lucy’s since
tuition doesn’t cover the entire cost of educating each
student,” says Bryan. “We believe that it’s biblical to give
our time, money and talents to help organizations like
St. Lucy’s that spread God’s love. And we want to see
the School flourish now and in the future.”
Their dedication to the future of St. Lucy’s is apparent
in many ways and everyone at the School is truly grateful
for their support. The Jacobs plan on participating in the
Annual Giving Campaign as alumnae parents and are
looking forward to returning to St. Lucy’s to attend
Boutique and BASH. “We think it’s important to stay
involved as alumnae parents because we want to help
preserve St. Lucy’s for the next generation of young
women,” says Bryan.

Taffi Hotard Parrish ’82 lived in Georgia
for 15 years and moved to Del Mar three
years ago where she resides with her
13-year-old son, Cole, and husband,
Paul. Although she enjoys her business
career, she also enjoys surfing every
day. She won 1st place in a Carlsbad
Surf Competition and will be competing
throughout the next year. She loves raising her son and
being a mom.

Lauren Gasparo Anton ’92, recently
accepted a promotion at La Ventana
Treatment Programs as the Director
of Dietary Services, where she will lead
the dietary team and lead the dietary
aspect of treatment for all La Ventana
programs. La Ventana treats both adults
and adolescents who suffer from eating
disorders and/or substance abuse.
La Ventana’s model is derived from the 12-step program
and the approach is one of mindfulness and attunement to
the body and its innate need to reconnect with hunger and
fullness cues.
Nicole Durkan Lam ’98 and her husband Van welcomed
their third child on February 4, 2015. Joseph Paul Lam joins
his brother Thomas (age 8) and sister Meghan (age 6).
2000’s
Jessica Clague DeHart ’00, PhD, MPH,
is an Assistant Professor in the Division
of Cancer Etiology at City of Hope and
a proud graduate from St. Lucy’s. She
earned her undergraduate degree in
Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
at the University of Southern California
and then pursued an MPH in Chronic
Disease Epidemiology from Yale University. She completed
her PhD in Cancer Epidemiology at the University Of Texas
School Of Public Health and her doctoral training at MD
Anderson Cancer Center. Her current research focuses
on examining the biology behind associations between
modifiable risk factors and cancer prevention and survival,
and providing personalized wellness prescriptions to high-
risk families, women undergoing treatment and survivors
of cancer. Jessica and her husband Eric DeHart, live in
La Verne and have two beautiful boys—Samuel Eric DeHart
(4 years old) and James Alexander DeHart (1 year old).
Dr. Jennifer Vargas ’01, is a resident
physician at the University of California,
Riverside - Riverside County Regional
Medical Center Family Medicine program.
She received her Bachelor of Science in
Biology with a minor in Spanish Literature
from UCLA in 2005. She received her
medical education at the Universidad
Autónoma de Guadalajara and New York Medical College.
She plans to continue practicing family medicine in the Inland
Empire and working with the underserved population.
Megan Wade ’03, graduated
from the University of San
Diego in 2008 with a B.A.
in Psychology and English.
She was recently honored with
her second Emmy Nomination
for her role as Producer of
the popular prime time series,
Dancing With The Stars.
The award will be presented at the Prime Time Emmy Awards
ceremony on FOX on Monday, September 20th live from the
Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Nicole Dela Rosa ’12 graduated this
year from the University of California,
Santa Barbara with Bachelor of Arts
Degree in English and Global Studies.
She received High Honors at graduation.
Julia Angelica Castaneda ’15 was recently hired at
Disneyland as a Character Host.
BryAnna Wertz ’15, was recently
awarded the highest honor as a
Girl Scout. She received the Gold
Award through Girl Scouts of Greater
Los Angeles. BryAnna’s project was
called “Gathering Around a Campfire”
in which she dedicated more then 80
hours to a therapeutic equestrian center
by revamping their learning center and painting a mural to be
used as a visual aid. The equestrian center provides therapy
to handicapped children and adults. As a result of earning this
achievement, BryAnna was awarded a $4,000 scholarship
for Whittier College where she will be attending this fall.

Danielle Mavridis ’12 is a senior at the
University of San Diego (USD). For her senior
design project, her team will be designing
and building a one passenger off-road vehicle
to compete in the SAE Baja Competition in
May 2016! This is one of the largest projects
in senior design history at USD and they
will be the first team to participate in this
competition representing their college.
Over the course of the school year, Danielle
and her team will be working to complete the
process of building their vehicle, including
work on chassis/frame/ergonomics, front and rear
suspension, steering, brakes, drivetrain/powertrain
and the electrical systems. Everyone at St. Lucy’s
is very proud of Danielle for her achievements in this
field, and we look forward to seeing what her future
holds. Good luck, Danielle!

Loryn Carter ’16 was recently featured
in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune for
her amazing athleticism on the Varsity
Volleyball Team at St. Lucy’s Priory
High School. She will be attending the
University of Irvine following graduation
in 2016 on an Athletic Scholarship for
Volleyball.
“Loryn is a strong leader,” says Valerie
Pentolino, Athletic Director and Assistant
Principal for Student Life. “She is well-
respected by her teammates, coaches
and the entire St. Lucy’s community.”
St. Lucy’s has a long-standing tradition of offering a highly
competitive Athletic Program and Volleyball is no exception, being
ranked as a Division 1A team. “Loryn started her freshman year
on the Varsity Team,” says Ms. Pentolino. “To be a starter on the
Varsity Team as a freshman is a huge honor! She brought strength
to her team right away, and we knew she was going to be an asset.”
Among her many accomplishments, Loryn was awarded the Roarie
Regent Athlete Award for three consecutive years from 2012–2014.
This award is given to the student who demonstrates attributes
beyond their talent in any given sport. Nominees are judged based
on academics and involvement in the community.
As captain of the volleyball team for three years, Loryn cherishes
her friendships with teammates that she has played with during
high school. “I love how we get along on and off the court,” she
says. “We understand that when times get tough we can pull
through by working together.” She went on to say that winning
is a great feeling and something she enjoys sharing with her
teammates.
In addition to her dedication to her team, Loryn also is an active
member of club volleyball outside the regular season. Students
involved in this Club, travel throughout the year and compete
against other teams. St. Lucy’s also offered Loryn the opportunity
to grow in other areas. She served as a Regent Ambassador
for two years and was also a member of the Captain’s Council.
Loryn was included in the Honor Roll during the 2013 and 2014
school years and says, “I am working hard in school, but also
treasuring each moment a little more since I am a senior and
will not be here next year.”
Most recently, Loryn was the recipient of the Athlete of the
Week award from the SoCal Prep Legends group comprised
of the Los Angeles News Group (LA, Long Beach, Torrance,
Pasadena, San Gabriel, Whittier, Inland Valley, San Bernardino
and Redlands). These news syndicates select feature athletes
from the various publications and then the community is asked to
vote for their choice for “Athlete of the Week.” Loryn was recently
nominated along with six other athletes for this prestigious award.
The results came in and Loryn received 3,296 votes, putting
her in first place! “Everyone at St. Lucy’s is proud of Loryn’s
accomplishments and we are all excited to see what her future
holds at UCI and beyond,” says Ms. Pentolino.
