Principal’s Corner: Graduation Parties
As I write to you this month, we are
just four weeks away from graduation
and sending of another Xavier class of
accomplished, service-oriented, faith-
ful classes into “life after high school.”
Truly there will be much to celebrate on
May 24.
Celebration, of course,
includes the annual
slate of graduation
parties. Relatives and
friends will drive across
town, drive from other
towns and some
will fly from other
states to honor
the members of
this outstand-
ing group of
young people.
These wonder-
ful gatherings
celebrate
community as
much as they
celebrate the
accomplishments of the graduates.
Planning the festivities will certainly
include many decisions. Where should
the party be held? Some will open their
homes; others will use parish halls, com-
munity centers, etc. Who should we
invite? Some limit to close friends and
relatives; some students hand out invita-
tions to the entire class! What type of
decorations and what colors should we
use? What kind of food will be served?
Should we cater or prepare the food our-
selves? Should we have games? How
about music? The list of decisions can
seem endless.
One decision that I am often consulted
about is whether or not to serve alcohol
at graduation parties. Part of that an-
swer is easy; part not so much. The easy
answer is in regard to serving alcohol
to the graduates and their friends. The
answer is, don’t. Quite frankly, there are
too many reasons to list here (a good list
can be found here. but suffice it to say
that the risk of serving alcohol to under-
age students is simply too great. For
starters, it is illegal and it is dangerous.
Probably the most important reason is
that at your gathering, you are taking re-
sponsibility for someone else’s sons and
daughters. You have an obligation to do
all you can to keep them safe.
The second answer regarding serving
alcohol at graduation parties is in regard
to serving it to the adults who attend.
This seems to be less consistent. Cer-
tainly, it is a family’s prerogative whether
to serve those who are “of age.” Some
parents have two “shifts” to their parties.
During the first part of the gathering, stu-
dents and adults are welcome. At a cer-
tain time, the party ends for students and
continues for the adults. Alcohol is only
served after all students are gone. These
parents believe that drinking at gradu-
ation parties in front of students sends
the wrong message – that celebrating
graduation is a time to drink. Others
serve alcohol to adults throughout the
entire party. These parents believe that
students are in many social adult/teen
gatherings (family, neighbors, etc.) where

this is the case, so why do anything different? While I prefer
the first option, each parent has to weigh the message they
wish to send.
This time of year is exciting and scary at the same time. Excit-
ing because one very important part of our students’ lives
is finished. Scary because there is so much opportunity for
something unfortunate to happen. With late nights, students
on the road and rushing from one place to the next, it is impor-
tant to stress the need to be careful.
I implore you to not add availability of alcohol to that mix.
Have a plan in place if you choose to serve alcohol for adults
and under no circumstances serve alcohol to our students.
Let’s end this celebration season safely!
Sincerely,
Tom Keating, Principal

Vocations Mass of Appreciation
On Friday, April 24th, a special “Mass of Appreciation” was held at 7 a.m. in
the XHS chapel. During this liturgy, we prayed for former Xavier Saints who are
actively discerning religious vocations. Click here to learn more about these
individuals.
Thank You, Pastors!
The National Catholic Educational Association (Official) designated this past
Sunday “Pastor Appreciation Day.” Last Friday, Saints delivered treats to pas-
tors of our supporting parishes as small tokens of our appreciation for all they
do for the faith development of XHS students and for their service to our com-
munity. We are truly blessed!
Mass for
Grandparents 2015
On April 22nd, we welcomed over 400
grandparents to our 7th-annual Mass for
Grandparents here at Xavier (our larg-
est turnout yet)! Grandparents enjoyed a
breakfast provided by Xavier Parents for
Xcellence (XPX) before joining their grand-
children for Mass. Thank you to all grand-
parents who traveled from near and far to
join us! Click here to see our full gallery on
our Facebook page.

Live the Faith!
Here we are in the fullness of the Easter
Season! That special time when one
encounters our Risen Lord, & like Mary
Magdalene, we hear HIM say our name.
I too have heard HIM say my name.
I can remember it like it was yesterday.
The sights & sounds of Assisi, the crisp
mountain breeze & the vision of the
poppies in the valley below. It was the
first time I had been to the Basilica of
St. Francis. The encounter that took
place there, would remain in my memory
forever.
Sitting in the Basilica of St. Francis dur-
ing Mass, I was distracted by an image
of Christ-marred beyond belief-poor &
vulnerable. As I gazed on this image,
the opening hymn began to play, which
appropriately was: The Prayer of St.
Francis. As the words hit my ears & sank
into my heart, there was one thing I was
certain of; this was the very life I wanted
to live! Yes, I want to be the light in
the darkness, the love amidst hatred,
to console before being consoled & to
understand before being understood. I
remember nothing from that Mass, but I
can still picture myself in that old Church
pew in Assisi, & thinking: “This is what I
want to do for the rest of my life”.
Growing up I had always thought that
the one with the “vocation” would be
the clown sitting next to me. However,
I soon came to understand that the
“clown” that Christ was pursuing, was
me. As I gave of myself in the missions, I
realized that I was becoming lost in HIM.
Christ was pursuing me, & it scared me
because I knew HE was serious.
It was the night of Holy Thursday on that
mission in Central America, when I heard
something that shook me to my core.
One of the Religious Sisters told me:
“Ms. Larkin, you have a vocation & you
have to go back to the States to discern
it”. Those words shattered the silence, &
I felt like I had been “noticed” by HIM.
A few months later I found myself back
on American soil, rebuilding HIS Church,
As I served our Church here in America
as a teacher & youth minister, I often
would get comments like: “Ms. Larkin,
have you ever thought about being a
Sister”?
A short time later, Our Lord put a reli-
gious community in my path. I started
“dating” that community & quickly
found myself falling in love with them. I
felt fully alive. With each visit to their
Motherhouse, it seemed as if my story
perfectly fit their charism. Was Christ
proposing to me?
After the vocation director in that reli-
gious community was brave enough to
ask me: “Ms. Larkin, when are you going
to surrender?”, I knew there was noth-
ing left to do, but apply to enter the
convent. The application took a while to
complete, & I left for Spain in the midst
of it, to walk the Camino. In fact, the
very intention of being accepted into this
religious community was the very reason
why I was making the trek across Spain.
As I knelt before the remains of that
“Son of Thunder”-St. James, I whispered
into his ear the desire of my heart. He
looked at me, & said: “Believe it. It is
real”. I flew home the next morning,
knowing that I had to finish the applica-
tion & mail it to the Motherhouse.
Those weeks of waiting to hear whether
I had been accepted or not, seemed like
years. It was the eve of the feast of that
very Son of Thunder-St. James, when I
received a phone call from the Mother
Superior of the community. I had been
accepted. I will soon be a young Sister
& a postulant. Yes, I am engaged now!
I am so humbled & blessed. I feel so
unworthy to be HIS bride. To think that I
am now engaged to Christ is hard for me
to fathom! The date has been set & the
preparations have begun!
With these last few months in the world
drawing to a close, there is a lot that I
have reflected on. Life with Christ is a
drama of finding & losing, of embracing
& surrendering. One can plan an event,
but you can not plan an encounter! We
only find out who we are by giving our-
selves away. I was that young heart so
many years ago, that would hear within
the same echo of what St. Francis heard
so many years before. “Rebuild my
Church”.
Submitted by Molly Larkin
XHS Faculty, Theology
The following reflection was offered
as our morning prayer on April 6th by
XHS Theology faculty member, Ms.
Molly Larkin. Ms. Larkin announced
that she will officially be entering the
convent of the Sisters of St Francis of
the Martyr St George as a young sister
and a postulant in September. We wish
Molly all of the best as she continues
her faith journey and for God’s
continued blessings upon her!

Holocaust Survivor Presentation
Holocaust survivor Renata Laxova (visited Xavier on April 14th to
share her story with our Saints and with those who tuned in to watch
her presentation streamed online. In her parting remarks, Renata
reminded students that it is up to younger generations to remember
and re-tell stories like hers so repeating mistakes of the past can be
avoided and so that good can triumph over evil wherever it exists.

College Planning Checklist
I’m a list maker….grocery lists, to do lists, lists of other
lists I should make. I enjoy the sense of accomplishment
that comes with checking items off my to-do list. I can’t
think of a better reason to create a to-do list then plan-
ning for college. In an effort to make the college plan-
ning process a little easier for Xavier families I’ve started
a to-do list for you. While it will need some fine tuning
based on your student’s interests it’s a good start.
Now go check some items off your list!

  • 2. Principal’s Corner: Graduation Parties As I write to you this month, we are just four weeks away from graduation and sending of another Xavier class of accomplished, service-oriented, faith- ful classes into “life after high school.” Truly there will be much to celebrate on May 24. Celebration, of course, includes the annual slate of graduation parties. Relatives and friends will drive across town, drive from other towns and some will fly from other states to honor the members of this outstand- ing group of young people. These wonder- ful gatherings celebrate community as much as they celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates. Planning the festivities will certainly include many decisions. Where should the party be held? Some will open their homes; others will use parish halls, com- munity centers, etc. Who should we invite? Some limit to close friends and relatives; some students hand out invita- tions to the entire class! What type of decorations and what colors should we use? What kind of food will be served? Should we cater or prepare the food our- selves? Should we have games? How about music? The list of decisions can seem endless. One decision that I am often consulted about is whether or not to serve alcohol at graduation parties. Part of that an- swer is easy; part not so much. The easy answer is in regard to serving alcohol to the graduates and their friends. The answer is, don’t. Quite frankly, there are too many reasons to list here (a good list can be found here. but suffice it to say that the risk of serving alcohol to under- age students is simply too great. For starters, it is illegal and it is dangerous. Probably the most important reason is that at your gathering, you are taking re- sponsibility for someone else’s sons and daughters. You have an obligation to do all you can to keep them safe. The second answer regarding serving alcohol at graduation parties is in regard to serving it to the adults who attend. This seems to be less consistent. Cer- tainly, it is a family’s prerogative whether to serve those who are “of age.” Some parents have two “shifts” to their parties. During the first part of the gathering, stu- dents and adults are welcome. At a cer- tain time, the party ends for students and continues for the adults. Alcohol is only served after all students are gone. These parents believe that drinking at gradu- ation parties in front of students sends the wrong message – that celebrating graduation is a time to drink. Others serve alcohol to adults throughout the entire party. These parents believe that students are in many social adult/teen gatherings (family, neighbors, etc.) where 2 Follow Mr. Keating on Twitter: @Phillyboy14 Tom Keating Xavier Principal
  • 3. Principal’s Corner (Continued) this is the case, so why do anything different? While I prefer the first option, each parent has to weigh the message they wish to send. This time of year is exciting and scary at the same time. Excit- ing because one very important part of our students’ lives is finished. Scary because there is so much opportunity for something unfortunate to happen. With late nights, students on the road and rushing from one place to the next, it is impor- tant to stress the need to be careful. I implore you to not add availability of alcohol to that mix. Have a plan in place if you choose to serve alcohol for adults and under no circumstances serve alcohol to our students. Let’s end this celebration season safely! • 6. Live the Faith! Here we are in the fullness of the Easter Season! That special time when one encounters our Risen Lord, & like Mary Magdalene, we hear HIM say our name. I too have heard HIM say my name. I can remember it like it was yesterday. The sights & sounds of Assisi, the crisp mountain breeze & the vision of the poppies in the valley below. It was the first time I had been to the Basilica of St. Francis. The encounter that took place there, would remain in my memory forever. Sitting in the Basilica of St. Francis dur- ing Mass, I was distracted by an image of Christ-marred beyond belief-poor & vulnerable. As I gazed on this image, the opening hymn began to play, which appropriately was: The Prayer of St. Francis. As the words hit my ears & sank into my heart, there was one thing I was certain of; this was the very life I wanted to live! Yes, I want to be the light in the darkness, the love amidst hatred, to console before being consoled & to understand before being understood. I remember nothing from that Mass, but I can still picture myself in that old Church pew in Assisi, & thinking: “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life”. Growing up I had always thought that the one with the “vocation” would be the clown sitting next to me. However, I soon came to understand that the “clown” that Christ was pursuing, was me. As I gave of myself in the missions, I realized that I was becoming lost in HIM. Christ was pursuing me, & it scared me because I knew HE was serious. It was the night of Holy Thursday on that mission in Central America, when I heard something that shook me to my core. One of the Religious Sisters told me: “Ms. Larkin, you have a vocation & you have to go back to the States to discern it”. Those words shattered the silence, & I felt like I had been “noticed” by HIM. A few months later I found myself back on American soil, rebuilding HIS Church, As I served our Church here in America as a teacher & youth minister, I often would get comments like: “Ms. Larkin, have you ever thought about being a Sister”? A short time later, Our Lord put a reli- gious community in my path. I started “dating” that community & quickly found myself falling in love with them. I felt fully alive. With each visit to their Motherhouse, it seemed as if my story perfectly fit their charism. Was Christ proposing to me? After the vocation director in that reli- gious community was brave enough to ask me: “Ms. Larkin, when are you going to surrender?”, I knew there was noth- ing left to do, but apply to enter the convent. The application took a while to complete, & I left for Spain in the midst of it, to walk the Camino. In fact, the very intention of being accepted into this religious community was the very reason why I was making the trek across Spain. As I knelt before the remains of that “Son of Thunder”-St. James, I whispered into his ear the desire of my heart. He looked at me, & said: “Believe it. It is real”. I flew home the next morning, knowing that I had to finish the applica- tion & mail it to the Motherhouse. Those weeks of waiting to hear whether I had been accepted or not, seemed like years. It was the eve of the feast of that very Son of Thunder-St. James, when I received a phone call from the Mother Superior of the community. I had been accepted. I will soon be a young Sister & a postulant. Yes, I am engaged now! I am so humbled & blessed. I feel so unworthy to be HIS bride. To think that I am now engaged to Christ is hard for me to fathom! The date has been set & the preparations have begun! With these last few months in the world drawing to a close, there is a lot that I have reflected on. Life with Christ is a drama of finding & losing, of embracing & surrendering. One can plan an event, but you can not plan an encounter! We only find out who we are by giving our- selves away. I was that young heart so many years ago, that would hear within the same echo of what St. Francis heard so many years before. “Rebuild my Church”. Submitted by Molly Larkin XHS Faculty, Theology The following reflection was offered as our morning prayer on April 6th by XHS Theology faculty member, Ms. Molly Larkin. Ms. Larkin announced that she will officially be entering the convent of the Sisters of St Francis of the Martyr St George as a young sister and a postulant in September. We wish Molly all of the best as she continues her faith journey and for God’s continued blessings upon her! 6
