Pakistan is very experienced in missing technology boats in time and repenting later,
one more very attractive opportunity can also slip away unless we engineers take an advance
notice and react to catch the technology ship. Pakistan spent thirteen billion us dollars on
import of petroleum products during the year 2010. This expenditure is tremendous burden
on foreign currency reserves that departs the country without directly adding to national
economy.
BACKGROUND:

The technologies involved in manufacturing in Electric Vehicles mainly include
batteries, motors, drive transmission systems, brake system, steering system, vehicle
lighting system, vehicle suspension system, wheels, tires and frame. Locally manufactured
cars operating on petrol were introduced in Pakistani Market through Pakistan Automobile
Corporation (PACO) a Government body. PACO was also tasked to ensure gradual deletion of
components resulted in large indigenous manufacturing base in the country. That clearly
highlights Public Sector Intervention in development of technologies backed by proper
legislation.

automobile that is propelled by one or more electric motors, using energy typically stored
in rechargeable batteries.

o LESS GREENHOUSE EMISSIONS
One of the primary reasons for the introduction of electric cars into
the market is the concern over greenhouse gas emissions and their
contribution to global warming.
o BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Overall, electric cars are significantly cleaner and safer for the
environment than traditional gas cars. Electric cars don’t require drilling for
oil (for fuel). Furthermore, they don’t release tailpipe exhaust and they are
super quiet too.
o CAN POTENTIALLY IMPROVE PUBLIC HEALTH
The widespread introduction of electric cars has the potential to
improve public health. Millions of cars over the last century have contributed
to air pollution and decreased quality of life for many people.

o CREATES ECONOMIC GROWTH
Electric car innovation and technology helps grow the economy.
Electricity generated to fuel electric cars and homes must come from
somewhere. Often, it comes from oil or coal but it can be generated by solar,
wind, hydro, nuclear or biofuel sources.
o TECHNOLOGICAL GROWTH
The increased demand for electric cars has encouraged auto makers
to get better at making them. This encourages innovation and economic
growth.
o EV MAINTENANCE COSTS
It costs a lot less to maintain an electric vehicle than a traditional gas
vehicle. Since electric cars run simply on a battery and electric motors, there
are very few mechanical parts that have the chance of breaking. This means
less replacement costs in the future.

CHALLENGES IN PAKISTAN:
o ELECTRICITY SHORTFALL
With an increasing crisis of electricity shortfall in Pakistan, it’s not an
easy call to introduce and keep the popularity of electric vehicles on the roads
of Pakistan.
o THE BIG-THREE AUTOMAKERS
The three local auto assemblers (Honda, Toyota, Suzuki) share the
highest investment in the auto industry of Pakistan. If electric vehicles gain
popularity in Pakistan, it would put a huge impact on the sales of these auto
manufacturers. Keeping in view, these local auto-manufacturers would not
allow the boom of electric vehicles take over the auto industry in Pakistan.

o COSTLY AND LONG BATTERY CHARGING:
It needs a considerable amount of time to charge the electric batteries
of these vehicles which is a negative prospect in this regard. The charging cost
of these batteries could also cause discouragement among people to buy
electric vehicles. In Pakistan, where the electricity is already very costly for
residential or commercial purposes; it’s impossible to provide low-cost
charging stations for EVs.
o INCONSISTENT GOVERNMENT STRATEGIES:
The inconsistent and changing strategies of government regarding the
auto industry could also turn against the scope of electric vehicles in Pakistan.
The government has not taken any appraisable steps in promoting electric
vehicles in the country.

Electric cars are one solution to the
negative environmental impact of conventional
cars. However, they have also proven to have many
more benefits to society. They have shown how
important it is to find alternate sources of fuel and
they can positively affect the environment and
society as a whole.
