Islamabad International Airport is the main international airport serving
the Islamabad-Rawalpindi city area and suburbs. It is Pakistan's second Greenfield
airport, after Sialkot International Airport and is built 20 km outside the twin cities
near the Kashmir Highway and Motorway Interchange.The foundation stone of the
project was laid by former President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat
Aziz on 7 April 2007.
The airport is fully operational on May 3rd 2018.

Announced In January 2005 by Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority.
3242 acres land was acquired in November 2005 at the cost of Rs 2.5 billion.
The foundation stone of the project was laid by former President Pervez Musharraf
and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on 7 April 2007.
Designed by French company Aéroports de Paris Ingenierie (ADPi) and
Corporation of Singapore.
Built on more than 3200 acres of land.
Second busiest airport in the country.
Developed on similarity with international standards.

7. FACILITIES:
It is the largest airport in Pakistan in terms of passenger capacity, capable of
serving 9million passengers every year in its first phase.Further planned
expansions will allow to serve up to 25 million passengers a year.
Two runways(Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority is acquiring 2,833 acres of
land to build a third runway at the airport).
Handling the Air bus A380,Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A350 XWB aircraft.
Terminal includes 15gates with 10 remote gates.

Islamabad International Airport has a 180,000m² modular terminal building
which is initially capable of handling 9million passengers. The numbers are
expected to reach 25 million passengers by 2024.
Being a new airport, a significant portion of the land has been earmarked for
commercial purposes such as duty-free shops, hotel and convention center, air
malls, business centre, food courts, free time and cinema facilities.
A four-lane highway is also under construction to serve cargo
traffic. The Islamabad Metrobuses also being expanded to connect to the
airport.

10. REASON OF CONSTRUCTING NEW AIRPORT:
The construction of a new airport was planned in response to increasing
air traffic and passenger load at the existing Benazir Bhutto International
Airport.
It was estimated that the number of passengers at the airport is growing by
14 percent annually and making it busiest.

DELAYS
The airport has been delayed many times causing the total cost to exceed over
100 billion PKR in total. The airport completed at a cost that is more 170 percent
more than its initial estimate. The PC-1 of the airport was estimated to be completed
at a cost of 37 Billion PKR.
