Several of the most common causes of fires are:
•Open Flame

Cooking and Cooking equipment:
Keep cooking surfaces clean : wipe all spills clean ovens
regularly
Keep flammables such as dish towels and pot holders away from
the stove
If there is an oven fire, keep the door closed and turn off the oven
If there is a grease fire, DO NOT PUT WATER ON IT!!
Turn off the burner and cover the pot. DO NOT PICK IT UP.

Heating Equipment
Only buy heaters with automatic shut-off features
Never leave space heaters on when not at home
Never use extension cords with a space heater
Space heaters should be 1-2 meters away from anything that can burn.

Electrical Appliances and Equipment
Avoid extension cords whenever possible
Avoid using power bars or outlet extensions whenever
possible
Replace frayed power cords on electrical tools and appliances
Allow sufficient air space for proper air circulation around
entertainment equipment (TV and stereo) and appliances
Never leave a clothes dryer running when not at home

Smoking:
Never smoke in bed or when tired a likely to fall asleep
Never put cigarette butts and ashes directly into a garbage can
Check the carpeting around where an ashtray may have been
Quit smoking: if fire does not kill you, cigarettes will.

Never leave a candle burning when unattended
Never leave a fireplace burning when unattended
Only use flame cutting and welding equipment after completing a
training and safety program for that equipment
8. Fire Prevention
Whether at home, at school, or in the workplace,
HAVE A PLAN
to evacuate in case of fire
Always have working smoke detectors
