Dear Saginaw Sting Hiring Manager,
My name is Vince DeAgostino and I am applying for the Game day Operations Team Intern
opening that I found on SVSU's career network website.
I am currently a student at Saginaw Valley State University, majoring in Business Management.
For the past few years I have learned, as well as tried to apply, many skills required to be
successful in my desired field. Two of the most important skills I have learned while pursuing
my degree are how to develop excellent organizational skills along with how to effectively plan
for the future. Gaining proficiency in both includes a focus on details and a motive of effective
efficiency. I was also a member of the SVSU football team for my first two years in school. I
unfortunately had to stop due to injury but the experience I received was irreplaceable in terms of
my personal growth and development. I was able to strengthen core values taught to me by my
family such as discipline, timeliness, determination, and respect. It also gave me new strengths
such as accountability, self-motivation, and effective time management. It was a rigorous
schedule to push through which helped give me a unique experience that I try to use every day to
accomplish whatever it is I am faced with.
In regards to my professional experience, my most relevant employment comes from being a
Front Desk Representative at the #2 Hampton Inn & Suites in the state of Michigan. My time
there was invaluable to me in regards to learning how to provide an exceptional experience for
every guest. Our guests were largely made up of international and domestic corporate
businessmen and businesswomen that stayed weekly at our location along with family leisure
guests on weekends. I was able to build relationships with the guests which helped create a
memorable, positive experience that was necessary if we expected any return business or
referrals. In the hospitality and entertainment industries that experience is your businesses
product. I was taught this rather quickly at Hampton and it motivated me to develop my
interpersonal and customer service skills every day I was on the job. If your guests experience is
not memorable, you will not earn repeat business. The word of mouth advertising that is sparked
by creating an unforgettable experience for everyone can ultimately be one of the most impactful
forms of advertising there is.
These industries also require resourceful people who can work well under pressure. Many
problems arise on a daily basis that can affect the nature of their customer’s professional and
personal lives. How those problems are dealt with is up to hotel employees, as a team and on
their own, to provide excellent customer service at all times. One specific example of how I
provided an exceptional experience for multiple guests with one decision comes from a situation
involving Ramadan and our rooms that didn't have refrigerators. Around September of 2013 I
was faced with trying to accommodate a fair number of our Muslim guests, around 20-25, that
were staying in rooms without refrigerators at our hotel for roughly two weeks on work related
business. They had all brought perishable foods to eat throughout the week. However, during
Ramadan Muslims cannot eat between the hours of sunrise and sunset. These guests had to work
2. all day, for two weeks, while not eating, and while not having anywhere to keep their food cold.
It was a fairly simple fix because we had two industrial size refrigerators for our breakfast area
supplies with plenty of room in them. So I organized their food by name in the fridge and set
them all up there with access to it during the night time hours. It was a fairly simple fix that I'm
sure anyone on our staff could have handled but if it wasn't handled correctly those guests would
have no doubt, left our hotel and stayed somewhere else that could better accommodate them.
Instead of that negative perception, they now saw us as a business that is willing to take the
necessary steps to please any and every guest to the best of their abilities.
In regards to tardiness or work absences, I would first like to say that timeliness and
accountability, again, are values that both my family and my football background have instilled
in me. That being said, if there is a situation where I know I need time off or may be late I tend
to try and give at least a two weeks' notice so that the necessary scheduling adjustments can be
made without much difficulty. If an emergency situation happens on the day off a scheduled shift
I would first contact my highest ranking supervisor and update them on the circumstances. If a
supervisor is unavailable, after leaving them a message, and depending on the severity of the
emergency, I would try and then contact co-workers or even someone in a different department
to see if the message could be relayed to a supervisor.
This internship would be a huge step toward achieving my career goal of working in an NFL
front office. Football is something that I am extremely passionate about. Finding daily
motivation to go to work would not be an issue if I can achieve this. Ideally, I would like to work
in the player personnel department to be involved in scouting, drafting, team make-up, and
interleague scouting. I am also interested in working in the game day operations or
marketing/sales departments of the industry. I have the motivation, the relevant background, and
almost have the necessary education completed to be successful in these roles. However, the one
thing that is preventing me from moving towards my ultimate goal is having that initial
internship. This would help me break into the industry and give me quality experience in
working in a fast-paced game day operations role, material and resource management, and with
what I call "wild-card experiences." These are just those experiences that happen while on the
job that cannot be taught through a class or prepared for in any traditional way. Like my Muslims
with no fridges during Ramadan example, there are situations that will arise in a certain industry
that you can never really be prepared for until you have worked in it.
The life experiences I have shared with you along with my growing education are what make me
the ideal candidate to join your team. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I
am eager and available to schedule an interview if needed. Please contact me at (231)-838-9662
or at vdeagostino10@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Vince DeAgostino
