VIETNAM COTTON AND SPINNING ASSOCIATION_______________________JUN 2022 – MONTHLY REPORT
As one of the pioneers of industrial real
estate with the ambition of developing a
green textile industrial park for
sustainable growth in the textile industry,
Aurora IP developed by Cat Tuong Real
Estate Group is attracting media attention
around the globe.
Most recently, global business and
financial information and news leader
Bloomberg has cited an article with the title “Aurora IP: Vietnam maintains the position of
leading textile and garment exporter.”
Not only Bloomberg, Market Insider, a stock market site by Business Insider with real-time data,
custom charts, and breaking news, also cited the article about Aurora IP with the ambition of
contributing to support Vietnam in maintaining its position as a leading textile and garment
exporter. In order to maintain the leading position, it is not only the efforts of textile enterprises
themselves but also the contributions of industrial real estate developers to the textile industry
such as Aurora IP.
It is no coincidence that the Aurora IP brand is bold in leading prestigious newspapers in the
region and in the world. The textile industry is one of the sectors that attract most foreign
capital as well as Vietnam is now the world’s second position in terms of textile and garment
export market share position, behind China.
Accordingly, prospects for the world’s textile and garment industry are expected to be brighter
in 2022 and Vietnam continues to maintain its position as a leading textile and garment
exporter in US and EU markets.
Meanwhile, Aurora IP is one of the very
few IPs in Vietnam that meets the legal
and utility infrastructure requirements
qualified to accommodate fabric-dyeing
establishments.
Well-designed with the largest capacity
of water supply and wastewater
treatment system for a single industrial
park in Vietnam, Aurora IP possesses
complete and synchronous
infrastructure to invest in building hi-
tech infrastructure plants, meeting the
strict requirements of the textile dyeing process.

In addition, with “the group’s humane - sustainable development strategy”, the industrial park
also ensures to create shared prosperity, improve the living standards of the local community
as well as a favorable working environment for experts and workers.
“We are very proud to be one of the pioneering real estate companies in the trend of green
textile dyeing, laying down the foundation and development of such a specialized green, clean,
sustainable industrial park, providing a favorable investment environment, meeting
international standards for foreign investors who are seeing Vietnam as an ideal investment
destination. I am very pleased as Aurora IP is receiving great attention from the media. This is
the driving force that motivates us to better play our role in the development of the textile
industry.” said Mr. Tran Quoc Viet - Chairman & CEO of Cat Tuong Group.

The average price of imported cotton in April 2022 increased most from markets compared to
April 2021, in which, the price of raw cotton imported from Indonesia reached the lowest level
of 1,192 USD/ton; followed by from India reached 2,086 USD/ton and the price of cotton
imported from Australia market reached the highest level at 3,057 USD/ton.
In the first 4 months of 2022, the price of cotton imported into Vietnam continued to increase
sharply due to the continuous increase in transportation costs, so manufacturing enterprises
were forced to rent warehouses to store goods, resulting in additional costs. Many businesses
are waiting for stable freight rates to place orders. On the other hand, domestic gasoline prices
are also continuously increasing, causing transportation costs to increase accordingly.
The cost of transporting imports from Europe and the US increased more than 10 times
compared to the time before the Covid-19 epidemic, but the price of goods increased only
slightly.
Besides, the phenomenon of port jams in important regions such as China, the US, and Europe
continues and tends to last. China still applies the "Zero COVID" policy, so major ports can still
be blocked at any time. This makes international freight rates continue to be unstable until the
end of 2023. Therefore, businesses need to keep abreast of developments to proactively source
raw materials when import prices are adjusted.

in April 2021. Generally, in the first 4 months of 2022, the price of imported yarn to Vietnam
reached an average of 3,049 USD/ton, up 19.7% over the same period in 2021.
Import price of yarn 2021-2022 (USD/ton)
In April 2022, the lowest price of raw yarn imported from Taiwan reached 2,684 USD/ton;
followed by from Malaysia at US$2,850/ton and the highest import price from Hong Kong was
at US$6,735/ton.
The world spinning industry after two years of the Covid-19 epidemic did not meet the global
market demand. Specifically, India's spinning industry is prioritized by the Government of this
country to meet the needs of the domestic textile industry if the surplus can be exported. India
is the world's largest producer of cotton yarn, with Bangladesh, Vietnam and China being the
biggest customers.
Given the situation of the Covid-19 epidemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the sharp
increase in freight rates affecting the import of Vietnam's raw yarn, it is forecasted that yarn
prices will remain high in the near future but will adjust in the second half of 2022.

Facing the current fluctuations of international commodity prices, the textile and garment
market is facing many difficulties when import prices increase sharply. Most of the textile
companies are not willing to import input materials at high prices, so the import volume
decreases.
In addition, some factories supplying fiber in Pakistan have chosen to close or extend the
holiday.
Currently, the production and business situation of most textile and garment enterprises in
Southeast Asia continues to weaken, the consumer confidence index in the consumption market
has decreased significantly, of which the index Consumer confidence in the eurozone fell to 22
in April 2022, the lowest level in the past two years. All of the above factors are expected to
reduce fiber prices in the international market in the coming time.

Cotton Outlook Jun-2022
The July NY/ICE futures contract is nearing expiration. Unless there are significant moves in the
next few weeks, there will be a 20 cent/lb decrease in effective Nearby futures when July moves
off the board (October is not commonly traded and is generally ignored). Since the December
contract is the first to expire after a harvest, it reflects price expectations in a new crop year.
Given variability in the weather and the potential for changes in economic conditions, there is
always a degree of uncertainty when looking ahead. However, the outlook for 2022/23 is
exceptional given the amount of uncertainty from both the supply and demand sides of the
market.

VIETNAM COTTON AND SPINNING ASSOCIATION_______________________JUN 2022 – MONTHLY REPORT
From the supply side, it already looks like the U.S. will face a difficult growing season. The West
Texas region has been in drought since last year, and while some rain has passed through in
recent weeks, it remains dry and there are concerns about abandonment. The last time West
Texas suffered widespread abandonment was in 2020/21, when more than half of the acreage
planted in the entire state of Texas was not harvested. Nationally, that pulled U.S. production
down to only 14.6 million bales.
The U.S. has exported more than 15 million bales in each of the last five crop years. This includes
2019/20, which covered initial COVID lockdowns, and 2020/21, when the harvest was affected
by the drought in Texas. On top of exports, U.S. demand includes about 2.5 million bales of
domestic mill-use. The only way the U.S. could meet demand in 2020/21 (14.6 million bale crop,
16.4 million bales of exports and 2.6 million bales spun) was through the delivery of
warehoused supply that accumulated with the large harvest in 2019/20. U.S. stocks are low
going into 2022/23 and cannot be leveraged similarly in the upcoming crop year.
Record prices in India this crop year may give rise to record Indian acreage in 2022/23. The
Indian monsoon season has just begun, and it remains to be seen what the weather and
potential pest issues might imply for Indian yields and production. Globally, yields could be
affected by extraordinarily high input costs. It is unknown what any decreases in applications
could mean for output, but reduced treatments could be expected given their cost. This issue is
not unique to cotton and could be a factor supporting agricultural prices generally. The war in
Europe has contributed to the rise in input costs and reduced the availability of crops like wheat
and corn. These crops can compete with cotton for acreage and may lend some support to
cotton prices.
All of the above concerns could maintain a floor somewhere underneath the cotton market.
Meanwhile, worsening macroeconomic conditions have likely lowered the ceiling above prices.
Inflation is a global issue. With necessities like energy and food costing significantly more, there
is less income to devote to clothing and home furnishings. In addition, the monetary policies
needed to combat inflation can slow economic growth and can compound the adverse effects of
inflation. For the U.S., eight of the past nine periods of rising interest rates were followed by
recessions. In five of the last seven U.S. recessions, there were decreases in cotton prices. Supply
concerns can support the market, but with cotton prices high by historical standards, a drop in
values could be more likely to accompany a potential recession.
A possible signal could be coming from China, which plays an important role in global demand.
Chinese prices are nearly always higher than the A Index, but the CC Index fell below the global
price in late April. It is currently 14 cents/lb lower. The last time the CC Index fell below the A
Index was around the peak of the 2010/11 spike.

Gujarat’s spinning units forced to shut thrice a week
Times of India
Jun 21, 2022
With cotton prices reaching Rs 1.1 lakh per candy (365kg), spinning units are reeling from
unprecedented cost pressures.
According to estimates released by Spinners Association of Gujarat (SAG), most manufacturers
of cotton yarn are forced to shut for at least three days a week due to reduced demand and
increase in the prices of yarn.
“With cotton prices going up, the cost of production for cotton yarn has gone up significantly,”
said Saurin Parikh, president, SAG. “However, we are unable to pass on the costs to clients as it
is becoming unviable for them to absorb the costs in their manufacturing.” He added: “As a
result, the demand has taken a hit. Our order volumes have declined by at least 40-50% because
of which the manufacturing capacities are also underutilized.” The high prices of cotton have
affected the entire textile value chain.
Industry players said that Indian cotton prices are the highest currently vis-à-vis the prices in
other countries and as a result cotton yarn is increasingly being imported from Vietnam to meet
the domestic manufacturing needs.
“Locally, cotton availability is also an issue and whatever is available comes at a very high price
because of which units are operating at lower capacities,” said Ripple Patel, a yarn manufacturer
from Rajkot and vice-president, SAG. Patel added: “Spinning units typically stayed shut for three
days a year. However, with less work, we are keeping the units afloat with a four-day week. If
we shut completely, we will lose labourers and finding skilled workforce is a challenge.”
Industry sources said that some mills have completely halted production. With the prices of
cotton going up, spinners are incurring losses to the tune of Rs 35-40 per kg depending on the
count produced.
Spinners have urged the Union government to abolish the import duty levied on cotton instead
of giving only temporary waivers.

Drought risk in US may not let cotton prices ease in near future
F2F
Jun 14, 2022
Textile sector globally is eagerly waiting for sign of easing in cotton prices, but they are not
likely to take a big dip in the near future, as that 51 per cent US cotton crop is under risk of
dryness and draught, according to the US department of Agriculture (USDA). Cotlook A Index is
also not indicating an ease at least till August 2022.
According to latest report of USDA, cotton production in the US may reduce in the coming
season 2022-23 (August-July) to 35.92 lakh MT from 38.15 lakh MT of 2021-22. The production
was 31.81 lakh MT in 2020-21. Since ICE cotton takes strong cues from the US production
scenario, it may not ease in the near future.
As per the USDA report, cotton production may increase in India, China, Brazil and Pakistan in
2022-23 season. Global production is projected to increase to 264.03 lakh MT in next season
from 254.61 lakh MT of 2021-22.
According to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro, Cotlook A- Index (USASMP) will
remain as high as $1.552 per pound in August 2022 when new season will begin for US cotton.
It will increase slightly from the projected level of $1.551 per pound of July 2022. Cotlook index
peaked at $1.635 per pound in May 2022 but the average price is projected at $1.564 per pound
for June 2022.
Brands face a lose-lose situation China’s Xinjiang cotton issue

VIETNAM COTTON AND SPINNING ASSOCIATION_______________________JUN 2022 – MONTHLY REPORT
Brands face a tough situation while taking a stand on the Xinjiang issue. If they decide to
continue sourcing from the region, they face ban and other legal actions from the West and if
they leave, they have to deal with large commercial losses. Either way it’s a catch 22 situation
for them.
Brands fear losses on speaking up
Brands also risk losing trusted partners if they stop sourcing from Xinjiang. Besides finding new
partners, they are also forced to deal with increased costs of sourcing and shipping the material.
Also, they are prohibited from speaking against Xinjiang, lest they anger nationalistic Chinese
consumers. Inviting Chinese consumers wrath can result in sale loss worth hundreds of mills of
dollars for companies like H&M and Nike.
Hence, brands prefer avoiding voicing concerns on Xinjiang though they may take certain steps
to curb forced labor. Most fear, protests might disrupt their Chinese operations and delay
shipments to the country. Scott Nova, Executive Director, Worker Rights Consortium and
Steering Committee Member, Coalition to End Forced Labor in the Uyghur Region confirms,
some brands have informally committed to leave China but have requested him secrecy on the
information.
Small companies more forthcoming
Smaller, privately-owned companies are more straightforward about leaving China than bigger
retailers that have amassed a large portfolio of consumers in the country. Fast fashion
companies like H&M and luxury brands like Burberry are being compelled to decide between
staying back in China or quitting it completely.
Global clothing brands like Patagonia are currently not able to determine the use of forced labor
in Xinjiang due to lack of access to the region. They can only monitor their factories through
video visits else they are harassed by local monitoring staff.
Strong cotton prices could increase planting to record high of 15%
Business Standard
Jun 3, 2022
Cotton planting in India, the world's biggest producer of the fibre, could jump as much as 15%
in 2022 to an all-time high, as strong prices prompt farmers to switch away from other crops,
an industry association said.
Higher output could help cool the rally in global and local cotton prices, which is hurting Asian
apparel makers.
Area planted to cotton in India could rise as much as 15% from last year because the crop is
providing far better returns than alternatives, said Atul Ganatra, president of the Cotton
Association of India.

Local prices have more than doubled over the past year, because heavy rainfall during
harvesting slashed 2021's crop to the lowest level in a decade.
A 15% rise in India's cotton crop area would lift it to around 13.8 million hectares in 2022 from
12 million hectares last year.
The association expects the largest expansions in cotton area to be in the western states of
Gujarat and Maharashtra, which together account for nearly half of the country's production.
Most Indian farmers begin planting cotton at the onset of monsoon rains in June, although some
with irrigated fields start as early as May.
Machines complete 80% of cotton picking in China's XUAR in 2021
F2F
Jun 22, 2022
Machinery cotton pickers replaced manual labor to complete four-fifths of cotton picking in the
harvest season in 2021 in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR), the
country's largest cotton-producing region, according to data from the Regional Agricultural
Mechanisation Development Centre.
According to the centre, more than 6,300 machinery cotton pickers are in service in Xinjiang.
This year, Xinjiang's cotton growing area is about 37 million mu (about 2.46 million hectares).
With the comprehensive use of modern agricultural machinery such as cotton pickers, the
region's cotton farming has bid farewell to the intensive use of manual labor, official Chinese
media reported citing the centre.
Cotton output in Xinjiang topped 5.1 million tons in 2021, accounting for about 90 per cent of
the country's total and maintaining its first rank in China for over two decades.
