Opening speech ambassador
1. Your Excellency the Secretary General, Madam President, honorable delegates,
As one of the two successor states of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic was unanimously
admitted as a full member of the UN at the resumed 47th session of the UN General Assembly on
January 19, 1993.
Since 1993, the participation of the Czech Republic in the work of the UN has been very active,
including in particular its seat of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 1994 -
1995 term, its Presidency of the 57th session of the UN General Assembly in 2002-2003 and its
activities in the Economic and Social Council.
Within its work in the field of human rights protection in the Commission on Human rights and its
successor the Human Rights Council, the Czech Republic has participated in the drafting of the
texts of a number of thematic and country-oriented resolutions concerning human rights protection.
The Czech Republic attaches a great importance to dealing with global economic and social
problems such as, international economic issues, social progress and development, observance of
human rights and fundamental freedoms or insufficient health and living conditions.
Czech Republic regards Model United Nations as a unique organ that should be able to help to
coordinate the complex peacebuilding efforts in the countries on its agenda, to attract the attention
of the world or -at least- national community and to marshal additional resources.
Thank you.
I yield the floor to the President.
