This unit plan aims to teach 8th grade students about author Edgar Allan Poe through analyzing his life and works. The class consists of 20 racially diverse students with some having ADHD. Over the course of a week, students will use various technologies like Photoshop, Weebly, and social media to explore Poe's biography and stories like "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Masque of the Red Death", and "The Raven". Activities include creating images, robots, posters and puppets related to the texts, as well as videos, blogs and discussions to demonstrate their understanding of Poe. The goal is for students to accurately explain who Poe was through experiential learning activities
2. Analyze the learner
General: 8th grade, 20 students (10 boys,10 girls), 15 Caucasian, 3 African-
American, and 2 Latino. 2 students identify with ADHD
Learning Competencies: Students should have a basic understanding of
Edgar Allan Poe.
Learning styles: Some students are auditory learners while others are visual.
(They still understand either way).
3. Objective
Students will analyze and explain who Edgar Allan Poe is by his life
and his works, through the use of drawings, Youtube videos,
readings, blogger, webquest, weebly, wiki, photoshop, posters,
robots, twitter, facebook and zello by the end of the week with 100%
accuracy.
4. Day by Day
1-KWL chart of who is Edgar Allan Poe, Introduce a photo of Edgar Allan Poe through
photoshop, then students will go to weebly and wiki to figure out who Edgar Allan Poe is
and then they will create Photoshop and tweet me
2- Discuss Theme in The Tell-Tale Heart, YouTube and Storytelling for help and the
assignment on creating their own theme. Students will then find others with similar themes
and create a robot to help show the theme.
3- Talk about the Masque of The Red Death, then they will write a paper based off of
WebQuest I made for them. The students will post to my Facebook a synopsis of their story
4- Read The Raven and discuss Symbolism of the raven, then make a drawing puppet of the
raven and get on Zello and read the poem.
5- Students will get on WebQuest and write a paper about favorite story then Create a
poster on things they like and have learned through out the week of stories and of Edgar
Allan Poe, then will get on Blogger and post a blog of questions asked.
5. Use of Technology
Students will use Twitter, Blogger, Facebook to post about their assignments a synopsis and
something they told someone about Edgar Allan Poe
Students will create their own photoshop image of Edgar Allan Poe as well as make a Robot on
the theme of the Tell-Tale Heart
Students will create a poster that will have quotes, photos and facts of Edgar Allan Poe
Students will read all the works provided of Edgar Allan Poe such as The Raven, The Masque of
The Red Death and The Tell-Tale Heart
Students will access Weebly and Wiki to find facts to finish assignments
Students will get on Youtube for extra help on theme and The Tell-Tale Heart
Students will use Webquest to do assignments
Students will create a paper raven puppet and use Zello to read the poem The Raven
