1. Muhammad's Death
Remembering Khaibar
One day, Muhammad led his army and attacked the Jews of Khaibar while they were on
their way to work on their date palms.
He had several of their leaders beheaded. One leader (Kinana) was tortured to reveal
where buried treasure was hidden. Then when he was near death, Muhammad
commanded that he be beheaded.
Many of the women and children were enslaved.
Muhammad took the most beautiful woman for himself and married her (Safiya, Kinana's
wife).
Immediately following the conquest of Khaibar, a Jewish woman prepared a dinner
for Muhammad and his men …

The Poisoned Sheep
A Jewess brought a poisoned sheep for Muhammad and he ate from it.

Narrated Anas bin Malik:
A Jewess brought a poisoned (cooked) sheep for the Prophet who ate from it. She
was brought to the Prophet and he was asked, "Shall we kill her?" He said, "No." I
continued to see the effect of the poison on the palate of the mouth of Allah's
Apostle.

Anas reported that a Jewess came to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)
with poisoned mutton and he took of that what had been brought to him (Allah's
Messenger). (When the effect of this poison were felt by him) he called for her and
asked her about that, whereupon she said: I had determined to kill you. Thereupon
he said: Allah will never give you the power to do it. He (the narrator) said that they
(the Companion's of the Holy Prophet) said: Should we not kill her? Thereupon he
said: No. He (Anas) said: I felt (the affects of this poison) on the uvula of Aitah's
Messenger.

The Talking Lamb
The lamb (some say goat) "talked" to Muhammad and said: "I am poisoned!". But
it was too late. Muhammad ingested some of the poisoned lamb and began to feel its
effects. One of his men, Bishr, ate from it too and died. On his orders, the Jewish
woman was put to death.*
*There is disagreement over whether or not Muhammad had the women who poisoned
him put to death.

‫فقالت: إني مسمومة ، فقال: لصحابه: ارفعوا أيديكم فإنها قد أخبرت انها مسمومة، قال: فرفعوا أيديهم، قال: فمات‬
‫بشر بن البراء، فأرسل إليها رسول ال، صلى ال عليه وسلم، فقال: ما حملك على ما صنعت؟ قالت: أردت أن أعلم‬
‫.إن كنت نبيا لم يضررك. وإن كنت ملكا أرحت الناس منك، قال: فأمر بها فقتلت‬

Translation:
..."The apostle of Allah and his companions ate from it. It (goat) said: "I am
poisoned." He [Muhammad] said to his Companions, "Hold your hands! because it
has informed me that it is poisoned!" They withdrew their hands, but Bishr Ibn al-
Bara expired. The apostle of Allah sent for her (Jewess) and asked her, "What
induced you to do what you have done?" She replied, "I wanted to know if you are

3. a prophet, in that case it will not harm you and if you are a king, I shall relieve the
people of you. He gave orders and she was put to death."

Islamic Science
When Muhammad began to feel the effects of the poisoning he tried to get himself
healed of it.

Ajwah dates*
Muhammad said: "Ajwah dates come from Paradise and they are a remedy for
poison"
*Ajwa is a soft dry variety of date fruit from Saudi Arabia.

2068 - ‫حدثنا محمد بن بشار حدثنا معاذ بن هشام حدثنا أبي عن قتادة عن شهر بن‬
‫حوشب عن أبي هريرة أن ناسا من أصحاب النبي صلى ا عليه و سلم قالوا الكمأة‬
‫جدرى الرض فقال النبي صلى ا عليه و سلم الكمأة من المن وماؤها شفاء للعين‬
‫و العجوة من الجنة وهي شفاء من السم‬
Translation:
Muhammad said: The ajwah dates come from Paradise, and they are a remedy for
poison.

Muhammad followed his own medicinal advice and ate dates on a daily basis.

Narrated Anas bin Malik,:
Allah's Apostle never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of 'Id-ul-Fitr unless he
had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet used to eat odd number of

From the foregoing we would assume that Muhammad would not suffer from poison.
Yet such was not the case...

Cupping*
As the remedy from Paradise (ajwah dates) proved to be useless, he had himself
treated by cupping*
*Cupping (or fire cupping) is essentially drawing a small amount of blood from the body.

‫إل ولة بشر بن البراء فقتلوها، وهو الثبت، واحتجم رسول ال، صلى ال عليه وسلم، على كاهله من أجل الذي‬
‫أكل ، حجمه أبو هند بالقرن والشفرة، وأمر رسول ال، صلى ال عليه وسلم، أصحابه فاحتجموا أوساط رؤوسهم‬
Translation:
The Messenger of Allah got himself "cupped" for what he had eaten.

Translation:
Aisha said: "During his illness the prophet recited "al-Mu'awwadhatayn" (prayer),
and blow his breath upon his body." [This was done in an effort to be healed]

His wife Aisha tried to rub him with his (Muhammad's) hand.

‫.عليه بهن وأمسحه بيد نفسه‬
Translation:
Aisha reported that when Allah’s Messenger fell ill, he recited over his body
Mu’awwidhatan and blew over himself and when his sickness was aggravated I used
to recite over him and rub him with his hand with the hope that it was more blessed.

Even Gabriel* got into the act and prayed for his healing.
*Muhammad believed that Gabriel, the angel, appeared to him.

‫أخبرنا أحمد بن عبد ال بن يونس وسعيد بن سليمان قال: أخبرنا أبو شهاب عن داود عن أبي نضرة عن أبي سعيد‬
‫قال: اشتكى رسول ال، صلى ال عليه وسلم، فرقاه، يعني جبريل، عليه السلم، فقال: بسم ال أرقيك، من كل شيء‬
‫.يؤذيك، من كل حاسد وعين وال يشفيك‬
Translation:
The apostle of Allah fell ill and he i.e. Gabriel, chanted on him, saying, "In the name
of Allah I chant on to ward off from you every thing that harms you and (to ward
off you) against every envier and from every evil eye and Allah will heal you."

But Allah did not heal him
The Jewish woman from Khaibar whose family had been wiped out by Muhammad,
put poison into the lamb and fed it to Muhammad and his men. Muhammad
ingested some of the poisoned lamb and began to feel its effects. He died three years
later, in extreme pain, as a result of the poisoning.

‫وأمر رسول ال، صلى ال عليه وسلم، أصحابه فاحتجموا أوساط رؤوسهم وعاش رسول ال، صلى ال عليه‬
‫وسلم، بعد ذلك ثلث سنين حتى كان وجعه الذي قبض فيه جعل يقول في مرضه: ما زلت أجد من الكلة التي أكلتها‬
،‫يوم خيبر عدادا حتى كان هذا أوان انقطاع أبهري، وهو عرق في الظهر، وتوفي رسول ال، صلى ال عليه وسلم‬
‫.شهيدا، صلوات ال عليه ورحمته وبركاته ورضوانه‬
Translation:
The apostle of Allah lived after this three years till in consequence of his pain he
passed away. During his illness he used to say, "I did not cease to find the effect of
the (poisoned) morsel, I took at Khaibar and I suffered several times (from its
effect) but now I feel the hour has come of the cutting of my jugular vein*."
* 'the cutting of my jugular vein': used metaphorically for ‘extreme pain’

The food I ate at Khaibar

‫وقال يونس عن الزهري قال عروة قالت عائشة رضي ال عنها كان النبي صلى ال عليه وسلم يقول في مرضه‬
‫الذي مات فيه يا عائشة ما أزال أجد ألم الطعام الذي أكلت بخيبر فهذا أوان وجدت انقطاع أبهري من ذلك السم‬

7. Narrated 'Aisha: The Prophet in his ailment in which he died, used to say, "O
'Aisha! I still feel the pain caused by the food I ate at Khaibar, and at this time, I
feel as if my aorta is being cut from that poison."

‫النبي، صلى ال عليه وسلم، لها: يضاعف لنا البلء كما يضاعف لنا الجر! ما يقول الناس؟ قالت: قلت يقولون به‬
‫ذات الجنب، فقال رسول ال، صلى ال عليه وسلم: ما كان ال ليسلطها على رسوله، إنها همزة من الشيطان‬
‫.ولكنها من الكلة التي أكلتها أنا وابنك، هذا أوان قطعت أبهري‬
Translation:
Umm Bishr [the mother of the Muslim man who also died eating poison], came to
the prophet during his illness and said, "O apostle of Allah! I never saw fever like it
in any one." The prophet said to her, "Our trial is double and so our reward [in
heaven], is double. What do the people say about it [his illness]?" She said, "They
say it is pleurisy." Thereupon the apostle said, "Allah will not like to make His
apostle suffer from it (pleurisy) because it indicates the possession of Satan, but (my
disease is the result of) the morsel that I had taken along your son. It has cut my
jugular vein."

Allah has given me a choice
Knowing the game was up, Muhammad made the best out of a failed situation.

، ‫ثم قال : إن عبدا من عباد ال خيره ال بين الدنيا وبين ما عنده ، فاختار ما عند ال . قال : ففهمها أبو بكر‬
‫وعرف أن نفسه يريد ، فبكى وقال : بل نحن نفديك بأنفسنا وأبنائنا‬

8. ...then he [Muhammad] said, "Allah has given one of his servants the choice
between this world and that which is with Allah and he has chosen the latter."

KHAIBAR – KHAIBAR???
The Jews of Khaibar proved that Muhammad was not a real prophet.
He ingested the poison, so did at least one of his followers.
He attempted to be healed, he tried his medicine, and his form of “laying on of
hands”, his prayer, Aisha’s prayer, and even Gabriel’s prayer.
But in the end, he died from the poison … remembering Khaibar.

A Last Curse?
Just before his death, Muhammad uttered curses instead of asking Allah to guide
people.

‫حدثني عبيد ال بن عبد ال بن عتبة: أن عائشة وعبد ال بن عباس قال: لما نزل برسول ال، صلى ال عليه‬
‫وسلم، طفق يلقي خميصة على وجهه، فإذا اغتم كشفها عن وجهه فقال وهو كذلك: لعنة ال على اليهود‬
‫.والنصارى! اتخذوا قبور أنبيائهم مساجد، يحذرهم مثل ما صنعوا‬
Translation:
When the last moment of the prophet was near, he used to draw a sheet over his
face; but when he felt uneasy, he removed it from his face and said: "Allah's
damnation be on the Jews and the Christians who made the graves of their prophets
objects of worship."
