2. Applications of Magnetosomes
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Magnetic hyperthermia.
Drug delivery.
Other medical applications of bacterial magnetosomes.
3. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
• Several studies report the use of bacterial magnetosomes as
positive or negative contrast agent.
• Using MRI magnetic bacteria have natural tendency to target
tumors when they administerd intravenously.
• Positive contrast improving the visualization of the magnetic
bacteria in tumors.
4. Magnetic hyperthermia
• Magnetosomes are also good candidates to treat cancers
using magnetic hyperthermia.
• Magnetic hyperthermia is a technique in which magnetic
nanoparticles are administered to tumors and then heated
under the application of an alternating magnetic field.
The heat induces anti-cancer activity.
5.
6. Drug delivery
• Due to the presence of various chemical groups at the surface of
magnetosomes,
• It can reduce the toxicity of anticancer drugs. E.g. doxorubicin is
highly toxic, mortality 80%. But the conjugate of magnetosomes
and doxorubicine is less toxic, mortality 20%.
• The conjugate of doxorubicin and magnetosomes have been
tasted as anti-tumor activity against hepatic cancer.
7. Other medical applications of
magnetosomes
• It can used to detect nucleotide polymorphism, which is
used to diagnose disease such as cancer, HTN, diabetes
etcetera.
• The magnetosomes have also been used in immune assay
to detect small nuclease, hormones or toxic detergent.
