Editor's Notes
Hook
My name is Tori Hopp and modern elegance is what I love
Hook
Sounds strange but I love the mixture of vintage with modern elements.
Hook
The colors, shapes and designs are what sets me apart from the rest.
2. Roots
When I was 16 years old I realized I loved advertising and marketing. Not the idea of selling a product but using creative means to help do that.
2. Roots
My art teacher turned me on to Graphic Design. I started working at a print shop. My boos let me design simple things at first. I loved it.
2. Roots
After high school I went to work at kitchen baking and decorating cakes, cookies and cupcakes. I liked the creative aspect of it but it wasn’t what I loved to do.
2. Roots
Working in the kitchen did teach me one thing: learning to work under stress and deadlines. Without that, I think I wouldn’t have been prepared for what was going to happen in my career.
2. Roots
Now I am working for a newspaper as a graphic designer. I love the fast paced life of a newspaper. We publish four newspapers and it has helped me network. Our newspaper is owned by BH Media, yeah, Berkshire Hathaway Media Group. Working for BH Media has been a great learning experience. I have met a lot of great people that I hope to remain in contact with for a long time.
2. Roots
I chose to work in the kitchen to make more money but I realized my motivations don’t come from money, they come from being creative. My dream is to create something and have people say “Tori Hopp did that. She is a great graphic designer.” I don’t need fortune to be happy, I just need to be me.
3. Personal Statement
I am creative in my approach with projects and I try to look at things from different angles. I love a challenge and strive to make challenges work. It always makes me happiest when something comes out great. I work well under pressure and know how to solve problems quickly.
3. Personal Statement
Having a professionally varied background means I have experience in things many others may not. It may not seem like working in a kitchen would play into graphic design but it does. Not only did I learn to work quickly, I also learned more about teamwork and looking out for each other. I feel like I bring a lot to the table.
4. Skills
I started out messing around with Photoshop and moved on to using InDesign before I was out of high school. I have over 10 years experience with those two programs. I have spent most of my professional life doing graphic design so I feel I am great at what I do. I tend to keep up with trends and love to flex my muscles on new projects.
4. Skills
One thing I wish I was better at was drawing so I could incorporate that into my designs. I try to sketch things out daily so I am working on it. I know that I can do it and I strive to meet all my goals.
4. Skills
Not only do I have experience in graphic design but I also enjoy video editing and directing and writing short films. I help out with the creation of our sports videos currently and I love it but I would also enjoy working in a field or area that I could incorporate my love of video editing with my love of graphic design. My friend is a director and writer too so I am getting a lot of practice helping him with his short films.
5. Professional
Working in a print shop taught me more than just graphic design. It also taught me customer service and how to break out of my shell. I am naturally shy but I learned to communicate professionally while working there.
6. Professional
Now working for BH Media I have learned that team work is what helps create award winning ideas. Last year I was 2nd in the Best Ad Designer category at the Iowa Newspapers Association’s annual award show. I was blown away but I couldn’t have done it without the support of my fellow designers. We push each other to do the best we can.
6. Professional
I also spend a lot of my free time helping to bring the local Relay for Life event together. I am part of the marketing team for this year’s event. I love to volunteer and the American Cancer Society is near and dear to me. I recently lost my Grandfather to cancer so I do what I can to bring awareness to the cause. We were recently honored for being one of the top teams in our region.
7. Professional
Being a graphic designer has pushed me far out of my comfort zone. I feel that I would still be too shy to talk to people if I didn’t continue to pursue my dreams. Most of my friend’s from high school have noticed that I have grown into a different person and I believe it is my love of graphic design that has done that.
8. Work Examples
Here are some of the first things I ever designed while working at the print shop. I love the look of the flowers and the composition. Looking at it now, I can see some areas I would change but overall I think it was a great first attempt.
8. Work Examples
Working for newspapers, I get to do one of the things I love; advertising. My creations have helped sell things locally and I am very proud when I hear that the ad was effective.
8. Work
(More example of ads will go here. I need to decide which one’s I would like to include.)
9. Work
I am very proud of the video editing I have done for a few short films. I think the these videos show I can be creative in different media. (I will include a sample scene from the movie “Under my bed” here. I need to cut it to work.)
9. Work
(here will be a clip from the short film Midnight. I need to decide what frames to include)
10. Success
Success to me is doing what you love everyday. It can’t be measured by money or status, just how good you feel you feel you did at the end of the day.
10. Success
You are never truly done learning and growing professionally. I love to learn new things and I hope graphic design continues to change and evolve so I can also evolve.
10. Success
As long as I continue to wake up every morning excited to learn and create then I know I am successful. Nothing can stop me now!
