16. Full edited statement
• At university I want to study sports journalism, a choice based on my obsession with football and the fact that writing has
always been an area I have enjoyed and excelled in academically. I have always had a strong interest in going to university as
I am aware of the advantages it can give me in pursuing my ideal career within the media industry. The idea of studying for a
degree, developing my skills and growing as a person has always appealed to me. During my time at school the subject that I
most excelled at was English, in particular English Language. After school I went on to study Level 3 Creative Media
Production and Technology at York College. I have enjoyed my study in Creative Media, particularly working in Photoshop,
producing print based projects; creating magazine pages, album covers and posters. These products gave me an
understanding of the creative meaning through the use of colours and fonts that are used. My study also required me to
develop my research skills, extensively exploring similar products and their construction. This allowed me to develop my
awareness regarding the production of magazines and other factual writing styles. In the projects where the content could
be personalised I would frequently produce work exploring my love of football, such as during my video game project where
I made an arcade style football game. In my second year of study I specialised in print based media, advancing my skills with
page layout, design and photography. I created my own fanzine based around Liverpool Football Club. For this I had to fact
check information, conduct an interview and write several pages of factual copy. The content in the fanzine was about the
club's history as well as opinion pieces regarding the club's future. I will be doing a client project soon, where I will work for
a popular social media channel (LFC Transfer Room) who I have produced content for previously. I will produce new graphics
for the brand as well as potentially new written content. For my final project I hope to create my own Liverpool related
online outlet, where I could make a website, posters and magazine pages with my own graphics. In addition to production, in
my second year of study I focused on critical understanding and analysis. I have analysed a variety of media products
including documentary, television and feature films. I work in a retail store which allows me to develop my team working
and communication skills. Recently, I have been given the opportunity to gain experience in the industry, with the previously
mentioned popular Liverpool Twitter outlet, LFC Transfer Room. They have offered me a chance to write articles for them
regarding previews for upcoming fixtures. I also hope to advance further with the company writing opinion pieces. Outside
of college I support Liverpool Football Club; I have occasionally watched different teams also, such as Leeds, to watch and
discuss a game from a more objective perspective. For a future career I have always ideally wanted to focus on reporting on
football, specifically in terms of writing articles for online or print media. Though football is my main passion, I am excited to
explore other sports in my study. Studying at University level will offer opportunities for experience in the field I am
passionate about, leading to a career in journalism. I am a good candidate for sports journalism because I am eager to learn,
I am passionate about sport and I will be committed to the course.
