Media Powerpoint
1. Question two. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
2. indie chavs emos Young urban (gangsters) Rich kids Artificial/girlie girls Here are some examples of social groups.
3. Women in media today are seen as sexual objects, who aren’t very intellectual. Media is still seen through a male gaze, meaning that it’s still very male orientated and they are in control. In some ways, my magazine is evidence of this as my model is pictured in sexual ways which therefore promotes dominant ideology, that women are used for sex and have no power, this in some ways manipulates male readers into reading the magazine, as they want to see more of the female body. My model here is seen in a sexual way as she is staring right at the camera, which gives a seductive effect to the picture. She is also showing skin on the one shoulder, giving the impression she’s started to undress. The picture also includes her breasts, even though they are covered, they could have been cropped out of the picture. She is pushing her hair up, which is also sexual, as you wouldn’t see a man posed like this . On my contents page, my model is seen in two more seductive pictures. She is stood, with a baggy t-shirt on, which gives the impression she’s going to ‘bed’. She is also overlooking her shoulder, sticking her breasts out, which makes herself appear as a sexual object. The other picture is a long shot of her stood up, showing a lot of flesh. This therefore connotes dominant ideology that women are just sexual objects and are powerless. On my double page spread, I feature 6 pictures of ‘Lady Trubble’ which are all once again sexually posed. The first picture shows my model holding her breasts, whilst showing her legs, which are two of the most sexual areas on a females body. The second picture shows her getting undressed but is still tasteful. All pictures reinforce dominant ideology as she is sexually portrayed rather than covered up. This therefore draws the males attention to her body, rather than her as a person. The articles featured on the front cover also support dominant ideology as it states ‘Beyonce finally talks life as Mrs Jay-z’ which therefore gives the idea that once your married you lose your identity and become your husband’s wife. It also says ‘5O cent shows us his bullet wounds’ which links men to violence, which is the dominant idea that men are violent and violence is something to be proud of.
4. However my magazine is aimed at both males and females, so need to make my magazine appeal to women as well as men. Therefore I had to use strong and independent images of women which therefore challenges dominant ideology. However I reinforce emergent ideology as my main magazine selling feature is a female artist, which shows she is powerful and independent. This also makes the magazine appeal to women as they may see her as inspirational and idolise her. It also gives the impression that any woman can be whatever they want to be. The graffiti on her arm, gives the impression that she is ‘tough’ and quite street, which also connotes emergent ideology. She is staring right at the camera, which as well as being seductive, also challenges the reader, as she is not shying away. She’s staring defiantly, which is therefore asking the reader to look at her. The main feature is called ‘Lady Trubble’ therefore meaning that she’s ‘trouble’. This is challenging dominant ideology as women were seen as loving, well behaved people who would have stayed in the kitchen and done as they were told. Also the strapline reads ‘Lady Trubble talks to us about music, fame, drugs and how she feels being branded the female Eminem’ which shows she's rebelling against dominant ideology, as she's used drugs and has also decided to tell the magazine her story, where as someone who enforces dominant ideology would keep their business to themselves and ‘what happened in the household, stays in the household.’ They also cared a lot about what people thought of them, where as emergent ideology supports the idea of ‘I don’t care what people think about me’ and that doing what you want to do is a good attitude to have. ‘Being branded the female Eminem’ reinforces emergent ideology as women are getting compared to men and are seen as equivalent. As Eminem is seen as a rebel and a troublemaker, by being compared to him she is challenging dominant ideas. The contents page features articles for both sexes. The magazine features interviews and columns that are suitable for both, but it also features articles such as fashion and gossip which is mainly aimed at women, and cars and women which is mainly for the men.
