Toby Jackson kept a production diary to document his progress on his FMP documentary project over 13 weeks. Some of the key events included:
- Completing pre-production work like research, planning, and problem-solving in the first 6 weeks
- Filming footage at locations in North Yorkshire like Goathland, Whitby, Dalby Forest, and Wykeham over Easter break and weeks 9-10
- Editing footage and assembling the documentary in Premiere Pro between weeks 9-12, adding transitions, text, and music
- Finishing touches like the script, audio, and presentation materials in the final weeks to complete the project for deadline.
2. FMP Production Diary
This PowerPoint will be to keep for my FMP throughout so I can evaluate my work every week,
and every day when I get further into the project and write down what I did, what I learned
and how I will improve it or what I will do next, I will also include screenshots and videos
visually showing parts of what I've done
4. Week 1
(9th Feb – 11th Feb)
This is the first week working on our FMP, I completed the pre-proposal
document on Word and started my contextual planning PowerPoint. I typed up
what my thoughts were of my idea and my influences of different documentary
directors, and also did some more information research into documentaries,
especially expository documentaries, these are the similar style to mine and
I'm glad I research these for more information on them and so I can use the
correct terminology in my work going forward. This research helped me
because I haven't done a video project in a while, the last time was my FMP
last year, where I made a film trailer and TV advert to support my film idea for
a film magazine I made, my last year FMP was print and video and I only got a
pass, so this year I am focusing more on video production and how I make it so
I don't have to rush my work for the deadline, we also have a lot more time this
year so I have more time to make it to the best of my ability. I typed up all my
strengths and weaknesses in Creative Media Production going into this FMP
project, so I know what I will be able to expand on and so I know what I will
need to focus on and improve. Next week I will finish off my contextual
research PowerPoint as this is the last week before half term holiday and come
up with more ideas for my project.
5. Week 2
(16th Feb – 18th Feb)
This week I made good progress on my contextual research. I thought about and
typed up all my strengths and limitations in this course and how it could affect
me in this FMP, so I analysed these points and typed up what I need to do to
improve my work and what I will do to make my project better. I also added a
bibliography to this PowerPoint too for the research I have done ad included all
the websites. My influences have been finished now, I did Davd Attenborough
and Morgan Freeman for their expository narrating skills and Yann Arthus-
Bertrand, for the way he did camera shots in his documentary 'Home'. We also
did an interview project on last lesson on Wednesday where we asked each other
questions about our FMP project and why we are doing it, this helped me think
more about my project and how it will help me in the future. I also did my
proposal on Thursday too, this was where we had to write an approximate
number of words about each part of our project, the concept, how we will
evaluate, our experience etc. I also wrote down 10 websites and books that I
could use in the bibliography, a few of them have already helped me so this was
beneficial. Then on the last part of my proposal document I did the time planning
and I put what work I will do and complete on each week we have of this project,
if I stick to this, I will be able to get my work done on time and to meet the
deadline.
6. February Half Term Break
During February half term, I thought more about my project and came up with new ideas and
how I can start on my research
7. Week 3
(2nd March – 4th March)
This week I started my research PowerPoint since it was the first week back
after half term break. On Wednesday I researched my target audience and
after lots of websites and looking at information / statistics for my project
and decided my target audience will be young adults (18 – 30-year-olds),
this is because they are the most likely to go to North Yorkshire which is
what my documentary is about, and they're most likely to watch it. This has
helped me a lot to start off on my research and get a better idea of my
project. On Thursday I got my feedback for my contextual research and
proposal, so I spent the day adding extra points and detail to my work to
improve the quality of it, and now I have a better idea of my project, I added
more to it and fixed the points that were given. On Friday I continued with
my research document by doing more of the audience research and topic
research. Next week I will do more of my research and do more market
research, including existing products, an audience profile for my audience
research, and surveys and interviews for the audience. Overall, this week
has definitely benefited me and this project.
8. Week 4
(9th March – 11th March)
This week I have made very good progress on my research. On
Wednesday I made surveys for my audience research, I made two, one of
them is to help me create my audience profile and another one to help
my production research on how I should make my documentary. I got
several answers and wrote about this benefited me. However, on one of
the questions on my audience profile survey, I asked what their favourite
place is to visit with family and friends, and I forgot to specify in North
Yorkshire, so I got varied responses, but this has helped me realise to not
do it again. On Thursday I developed my research by doing more
audience research and topic research on documentaries. On Friday
morning we didn't have any lesson so I wrote up a CV so I could use
lessons to focus on the FMP which was good progress, and then in the
afternoon I continued with my researched and this production diary.
Overall, this week has definitely benefited me and my research as I now
have a better idea on the purpose of this documentary.
9. Week 5
(16th March – 18th March)
This week I have been making progress on my new PowerPoint for
problem solving. On Wednesday I started my problem solving and made
great progress. I started off with listing practical and technical potential
problems, how it will affect me and how I will solve it / avoid it. This
includes equipment, storage, software, backing up work, outside of
college hours. After I explained these problems, I wrote about
theoretical and creative problems, this includes filming outside, actors /
crew, transport, locations, finance / budget, time management, and
health and safety. On Thursday I noted what problems I have had in the
past projects and how I solved it, and also did my contingency plan for 3
different genres, technical, logistical, and people. On Friday I did this
and added extra detail to my problem solving. This week definitely
helped me and my project by almost finishing this section in a week and
met the deadlines. Next week I will complete the feedback for my
research and start my experiments.
10. Week 6
(23rd March – 25th March)
This week I have made great progress catching up on my feedback and definitely
improving my work for a higher grade. I finished off my problem solving by adding extra
detail and I finished off my logistical contingency planning and my experiments plan. I
handed my work in and was happy with how I did it. I got my research feedback and
started finishing it off on Wednesday. I looked through all my survey answers for both
and wrote them all up, uploading screenshots of the answers and reflected on them,
this helped me realise parts of my documentary including locations, shots, and more.
From my audience research results I constructed two audience profiles, one for my
primary target audience (demographic and psychographic) and for my secondary target
audience. After I finished these, I went onto typing up the answers and reflection from
my production survey, this helped me as well shape the idea even more of how I will
construct my documentary. Next week I will complete my experiments and start my
planning. I am picking up a camera that I will use on Sunday 27th before next week so I
will use it to record and do experiments. I will do two, both with the camera but one
will focus on the angles and editing and the other will focus on visuals and text. This is
because I haven't done a video project in a while and not used a camera to film as I
usually use my phone, so this is getting back into Premiere Pro and also getting used to
the new equipment.
11. Week 7
(30th March – 1st April)
This week I started my planning for my documentary and also added lots more content to
my research. I started off on Wednesday by researching camera angles, movements,
mechanisms etc that I will use in my project, I did this to expand my knowledge and to learn
more of the correct terminology of what I will be doing with my camera. I also gathered lot
of pictures of these with captions and made mood boards to show what they look like.
After this, I started on my planning PowerPoint and made all the titles for the slides, so I
knew what I needed to cover, and split them into 3 sections, pre-production assessment
(which is the locations, equipment, personnel, etc), creative planning (storyboard, script,
music, etc) and organisational planning (budget, schedule, etc). I started my PowerPoint
with explaining my project including, what I am making, who it's for, why I'm making it and
where people can see it. I also did some extra feedback on older pre-production work like
my contextual research and proposal and added more detail, seem as though I have a much
better idea of my project now. Unfortunately, I couldn't do my experiments with my camera
this week because I needed a new SD card to buy, so I bought one on Amazon to do next
time. Next week will be my last week before Easter Holidays, so I will try and finish all my
pre-production so I can get ready for filming and starting the production of my
documentary over Easter Holidays / when we come back to college. This week has
improved my work a lot as I made a lot of progress and added good amounts of detail.
12. Week 8
(6th Apr – 8th Apr)
This is the last week before Easter Holidays so I wanted to finish off my pre-production
so I can start on my production over Easter / when I come back to college. Over the
weekend before, I filmed my experiments on my camera I am borrowing for my FMP,
so this gave me good experience for using this camera and operating it, and how it
works etc. However, while using it, one issue I had was the camera wouldn't focus
much on the landscape I wanted to capture, but after looking at the settings and
filming, I fixed it. For my experiments, I wanted to do 3, one for my camera operating,
one for my drone operating and one for Premiere Pro editing. I will edit both the
experimenting from my camera and drone clips on Premiere Pro for my third
experiment. I got clips in my garden using my camera for my first experiment. When I
came back to college on Wednesday I edited this in Premiere Pro by putting the clips
together and adding effects to gain practice on the software because I haven't used it
since last year's FMP. On Thursday, I finished off my feedback for all my previous pre-
production work and handed it all in on teams' assignments so I can get ready to finish
my planning and start production. On Friday, I carried on with planning and
unfortunately I couldn't finish it, but this means I can finish it off in Easter Holidays, as
well as making sure all my work is done and uploaded on my Wix site.
14. Easter Holidays
Over Easter Holidays I did lots of college work with organising, finishing work and planning more
ahead. I went through all my pre-production so far to make sure it is a good standard that I want
it to be. After I came back from my holiday I filmed the day after on Tuesday 26th April and went
to the first 2 locations in the same day and got all my filming done and footage collected. I went
to North York moors / Goathland to get footage of the views and also the waterfall too. Then I
went to Whitby further down the road and did lots of filming there on the pier, the harbour and
the abbey. I used different lenses too, like on top of the abbey I used the zoom lens to get shots
of the pier, boats and buildings further away which was very successful, it worked very well and
looked very clear on the video. Overall, I got lots of good work done and ready to start putting
my documentary together on Premiere Pro when I go back to college.
15. Week 9
(27th Apr – 29th Apr)
This week I have started production and make good progress. On
Wednesday, I spent the day uploading my work from the SD card on
my camera, into my own MacBook to put online on my York College
OneDrive, so I can access them anywhere on the college computers.
I also exported all my drone footage for my experiments today, so I
can put that onto my problem-solving PowerPoint. However, there
was a few issues with uploading my drone experiment footage from
my phone into my OneDrive with internet issues, but these were
solved quickly. On Thursday, I started to put all of my production
video clips into Premiere Pro and saved it is 'FMP Year 2
Documentary' in my FMP Year 2 folder on my York College OneDrive
so I wouldn't lose it and I know which one it is. On Friday, I
continued with this and kept downloading the clips to my computer
and uploaded on my Premiere Pro timeline. Overall, this week was
very good because I started production and I am on track for the
deadline.
16. Week 10
(4th May – 6th May)
This week I continued with my production. On Wednesday, I filmed and got
all my footage at the locations of Dalby Forest and Wykeham lakes. We set
off just before 11am, and luckily the weather wasn't too bad while filming
because it rained after we finished. I started off and went to Dalby Forest
including the Bridestones walk as it is one of their best walks and got lots of
footage there with my normal lens and the zoom lens for the view. Then we
got shots around the lake and around different places on the way into the
area. Then around 2pm we drove to Wykeham and got lots of different shots
around all 3 lakes as it was sunny and good weather. On Thursday, I was back
in college downloading all my work onto my computer and putting onto my
Premiere Pro timeline. I spent Thursday and Friday putting all my clips
together in order, which made it 8 minutes 30 seconds long. This is a good
length between 5 and 10 minutes I was aiming for. Next week, I will continue
editing and keep making my documentary better. I also want to focus on the
audio a lot next week too, by inserting non copyright music and my script
into my documentary too.
17. Week 11
(11th May – 13th May)
On Wednesday, I went through my documentary and deleted any clips
that weren't needed including clips that are very similar to others that
don't really add much extra to the documentary. I also added extra
transitions and effects, including cross zoom, dip to black or dip to white,
to make it look better and add more effect to my documentary. On
Thursday, I continued with fixing up my documentary, slowing down
clips, speeding them up, changing clips around etc. I am glad I spent time
doing this to make my documentary look better. On Friday, I focused on
the additional text and images in my documentary. Each time I go to a
new location I used the typewriter effect on the text in the bottom left
corner to have the name on screen. I also edited a map of Yorkshire in
the bottom right corner of the screen too with a pin to point out where
the area is on a map, this is to help out the audience viewing to find it
easier. Next week, I am mostly doing audio and putting music in the
background with my script and voice over too, then finishing up my
documentary.
18. Week 12
(18th May – 20th May)
This week we had a fewer lessons that normal in college.
Wednesday, we had two lessons in the afternoon so I made sure
to come in and get as much work done as I can. I went through
my production a few times to see what needs adding, mainly the
audio. I went on the website Uppbeat, for non-copyright mp3
downloads. I've used this site before last year, so I knew how to
use it. I downloaded a beat for my montage called tropical sun,
this was under the 'travel' section as it is the same topic as my
documentary and sounds very positive and the pacing of the beat
fits very well with my montage at the start of my documentary. On
Thursday, I continued with this, then typed up my script so I can
record my audio for next week. On Friday, I was absent in college,
but I continued typing up my script online.
19. Week 13
(25th May – 27th May)
This week I finished off my FMP. On Wednesday I
finished all my pre-production work by putting it
all on my website, and then started with the
presentation section by creating a website for my
documentary. On Thursday, I finished production
by putting my script in and fixing the audio to
make the voice over louder than the music. I
exported it as it was finished. On Friday, I did my
evaluation and my all my work on my website
