Nature of Research: Translation
December, 2014.
2. 1.1 Background
Translation has become an important tool in
recent years in order to communicate, share
and spread ideas in the world from a
language to another. It works as a link
between countries, cultures and people but
also is a source of knowledge about foreign.
Since English is one of the most spoken
languages worldwide, translating articles
written in this specific language is now a
need for professors, professionals and the
community itself, either for school matters or
for pleasure. However, not all the material is
available in the required language and that is
3. 1.2 Rationale
When having ready the translations we
will not only make use of all the
knowledge and techniques of translation
but also of the different tools that can be
useful for translators. Another important
point in the realization of a monograph is
that will not only be useful to the teacher
concerned but also for the student, as in
my case, it will be use in order to get my
degree career.
4. 1.3 Objectives
This paper aims to use different
techniques and methods of translation
and hence generate a writing that is
based on an original one and then make a
make a comparison between the two
products. The objective of this project is
the elaboration of a text that not only help
the student whose going to be responsible
for the translation but it will be useful for
any field, in this case for the teacher of
literature that requires the text to apply in
5. 1.4 Significance/relevance of the research
project.
This project focuses on the translation of one
chapter of the book Shattered Icon written by
Bill Napier. The nature of this project is
merely to fulfil the needs of a Literature
professor who wants to add some books
from the thriller genre into the classes he is
teaching. He asked for a novel and the result
of the research was the book mentioned
before furthermore, there is no translation
into Spanish of that novel so the opportunity
to put into practice my knowledge will be
6. In this section I will explain some of the
concepts and techniques that are relate to
the Translation field that will be used in
order to complete the elaboration of this
work.
7. The National Network for Translation refers to
Translation as the process of transferring written text
from one language into another. Anything that is written
can be translated: advertisements, books, games
software, legal documents, websites, film subtitles etc.
Translators work either in-house (as employee of an
organization) or freelance. Usually, translators work from
one or more languages into their mother tongue.
Translation is a process in which a natural equivalent of
a given message in a source language is produced,
taking into account primarily the meaning of the
message and then the linguistic style (Nida, 1959).
8. There are different techniques based on the
studies of Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet
(1958):
Borrowing
Calque
Literal translation
Transposition
Equivalence
Adaptation
Addition
Omission
9. In this section I will explain the steps to
follow at the moment of doing the
translation, since the description of the
text, why could be the implications at the
moment of having chose the text, the tools
and instruments that will be used to
translate a text from English to Spanish,
and the ways of Translating the chosen
article.
10. This project is focused on the translation of a
pair of chapters from the book Shattered icon
by Bill Napier. The book has a mysterious
approach that relates the adventures of the
protagonist to unmask a mystery related to a
lost object. Due to the nature of the book, the
search for specific vocabulary, consultation
of novels and thrillers will be required.
Furthermore, the level of English that the
book has is not as easy as it seems, so it will
be necessary to use advance dictionaries
and online elements to gather all the data
required in this project.
11. At the moment of doing a Translation it is
important to have some tools that will be
helpful through the project. For that
reason I believe that the use of
dictionaries, web pages, books,
newspapers even magazines will be
needed to fulfill the task. Furthermore,
having the correct elements to do a task
like the one mentioned before will ensure
the success of it.
12. At the moment of doing a translation we have to take
into account some steps. As we have to be precise, the
importance of knowing what is going to be translated is
the main point. For that reason, the first step is to read
the text and understand all the content. Second, we
have to identify if there are unknown words, in case they
were we will have to search for them and try to fit them
in the context of the text.
Once the project has started we have to focus on the
different methods we are going to use, and find the
suitable ones. A translation has to have a clear and
concise so that applying the correct method is elemental
to present a good job.
After finishing the first draft, it is important to read the
resulting translation and identify if there are missing
parts, elements or mistakes. Subsequently, it is
indispensable to ask for assessment to experienced
teachers to evaluate how the work goes and if it lacks
13. This work is expected to generate a
quality translation that is useful to those
involved. All the elements and the
techniques used during this project will
finally be reflected in the culmination not
only of the translation but by the obtaining
of my degree as a English language
teacher.
