A Study At The Library Alone Essay
The main argument of this paper is that most people are socialized to study at a specific spot. We will be focusing on people who come to study at
the library alone. Most people become comfortable at a specific space in the library because of a general habitus of finding a space that is
considered their "own place" to study at. In Becoming a firefighter, Matthew Desmond describes a general habitus as a "system of dispositions and
ways about and acting in the world that is constituted early on in life" (Desmond, Ethnograhy, 391). Humans are disposed to studying in the same
secluded spot because we take ownership of the space. Charles Horton Cooley writes in The looking glass self that "if we think of a secluded part
of the woods as 'ours', it is because we think, also that others do not go there"(Cooley, The Presentation of Self in Everday Life ,32). People often
think of their usual study space as theirs. Therefore, when entering the library, they often head straight for their space. When I was writing this
paper, it was harder for me to separate my habits from other people`s and just sticking to my observations. I also struggled with identifying a
phenomenon because many of the behaviors displayed would be considered normal behaviors. After reading Desmond`s theory on habitism in
Becoming a firefighter, I came to the conclusion that they were normal because at Bard we are socialized to act a certain way. I believe that the
strongest aspect of my paper is how I analyze the

My Experience At The Library
Bruno Ouattara November 2013 880 390 199 Sociology 100 In November 19th, 2013, it was raining when I came to school. Just after my English
class, I was heading to the library to find a quiet place where I could study. I saw a group of Asian's students coming out from the library, and one
of them, a girl, was holding an umbrella. So I walked straight to her and I soon as I got very close to her, without introducing myself, I grabbed her
umbrella. Surprised she didn't know what to expect. She just dropped the umbrella in my hands, and I walked inside the library with the umbrella on
top of my head. She stood under the rain, very surprised and was looking back...show more content...
There were also some students standing just against the wall and smoking cigarettes. Just in the entrance of building 25, I saw a security guy
passing by, and talking to students from table to table. I think he was trying to tell them to put their phones away and do not leave them at the
table because they can be stolen. While I was getting closer and closer the girl and her friends were trying to get together in one side and let me
pass, and they were kind of slowing down because I was running into them. But I think I didn't give too much choice to her; she released the
umbrella because she was surprised or afraid; so she didn't resist. But after she released it, she felt weird to let me take the umbrella; I can tell in
her surprising's face. Her friends walked back and all of the sudden they started to talk in Chinese or Japanese (I don't actually know the
difference) like 30 seconds after I took the umbrella and started to walk back in the library after me. The smokers were watching the scene and one
of them was laughing. They started to kind of want to follow me inside and I didn't just walked away, instead I stopped just inside to look one more
time and see if someone was going to talk. The lady at the front desk was looking quiet and some others students inside also. When they come in front
of me, I realized they needed an answer. And that influenced me to give up. So I

Digital Libraries Essay
Ashley Tipton Digital Libraries Introduction A simple definition of a digital library is a library where collections are stored in digital formats
instead of physical formats and accessible via computers. The content can then be accessed locally, as in within a library, or remotely such as from
other places on a college campus or from a user's home. Many people believe that digital libraries are the future. There are also those that still hold on
to the thought that the traditional brick and mortar building is the way a library is supposed to be and that moving to the digital real is not the direction
a library should be heading. History The information revolution is one of the marvels of the 20th century. We are now living in an...show more content...
Awareness of needs provide the insight to use professional skills and talents to greater effect.
The meaning of this is that it is important for the user to have information that is easily locatable and easily accessible. Nowadays, library patrons
have become information conscious and no longer want to wait and go to the library to find what they need. They want to access it access the
information electronically. The process of digitizing implies the production of a digital surrogate for a physical object (Unsworth, 2004). There
are many different items in libraries that are digitized. This ranges from serials that can be found either in print or online to rare books and
archives that are now being preserved in a digital format. There are many positive outcomes that come from digitizing parts of a library's
collection. There is less cost in reshelving the item. The item is simultaneously available to multiple users. The item does not have to be replaced,
since it is not being used and there is no chance of it being lost. Also, if it is a rare item, it can be preserved more easily as it will be less frequently
handled. Why Go Digital? The most valuable aspect of the digital library is its reduction in cost. There are many fees that are negated such as staff pay,
book maintenance, rent, and additional books. This makes the cost of the digital library much less to maintain than that of a traditional library.

Library Essay
Libraries are an essential part of the community. However not all societies have libraries. Libraries require centralized populations, economic
development and political stability for their survival. Libraries exist in places where peace exists. They cannot exist in places with full of conflicts.
Libraries have different missions and serve different communities differently. People and organizations establish libraries with different missions.
Historical overview shows that libraries have always had missions.
The earliest mission of libraries was to maintain an archive for records. There is not information that shows when the first library was established. In the
past, temples, municipals and governments had libraries. These libraries...show more content...
Therefore, Julius Caesar started building a public library, but died before he completed it. Asinius Pollio completed the library. This established was
followed by more public libraries. Other missions of libraries that existed in the past included maintaining scholarly mission, religious mission, for
instance, monastic libraries of middles ages, educational mission, for instance university, humanistic mission and promoting national pride (Rubin 39).
In the modern world, libraries have certain missions that they serve. The establishment of the printing press made more books available to many
people. This encouraged the establishment of more libraries. In the United States of America, libraries came up with new missions. First, libraries
emerged with the mission of self–improvement. Advances in mechanical technology in the eighteenth century led to industrial revolution that
improved the economy and community health. This meant that a certain class of citizens had more leisure time, for self–improvement. This favored
the emergence o f new libraries. The social library emerged with an aim of helping individuals improve through the search of truth. Therefore, they
provided literature and books that provided information, which could help people to gain knowledge and improve their character. In the current world,
libraries provide information that people have access to, and use it for their own improvement (Rubin 47).
Secondly, the modern world

Descriptive Essay About A Library
Every person has their place. The kind of place where the world could be ending but as long as their in that special place, they can leave the world in
peace. For some it's their hometown, the gym, a certain cafe or restaurant, or even a random spot with a sentimental meaning. For me, this place is the
Edmon Low Library here at Oklahoma State University. As a high school student, the library was a place to check out books and print papers for
free. The idea of spending hours there was unheard of, and never spiked an interest in me. Once I started my freshman year in college, this
speculation quickly changed. From the first time I toured Oklahoma State University, I wondered why the dazzling Georgian style library was so
overwhelmingly huge. It was in the heart of osu near the main campus facilities: the Union, Theta Pond, and various classroom buildings. Being
that the library was such a main attraction, I was curious to know why. I wondered why there was a cafe and why each level had a different noise
limit. All of these things seemed great, but unnecessary at the same time. After all, the only thing the library was good for in my mind was basic
needs for my english class. My first day at osu I decided to see what all the hype about this special library was. The more I explored the different
levels, the more I found. Not only were there books, free printing, a cafe, and noise accommodations, but there were also reserved study rooms, 3D
printing, subject librarians, free electronic checkouts, and so much more. The resources available to me and all OSU students from just a library
seemed almost too good to be true. From the restoring smell of coffee on the first floor, to the antique smell of old books on the 4th floor, nothing
makes you want to pull out a good book more than Edmon Low. I was almost convinced the staff wanted students to move in, being that they are
opened 24 hours on weekdays. With students being so busy, Edom Low is a convenient place to go no matter the time of day. Whether you're a student
coming home from a late night shift not wanting to wake up your roommates to study, or even just need to pull an all nighter for that big test, there is no
such thing as being a disturbance at the

Descriptive Essay On Campus
Iowa State University offers a large campus. The campus itself entirely is around the size of my hometown. I have lived on campus for a few
weeks now, and I know most of the campus, yet spend most of my time in my dorm. Whenever I am not in my dorm or in class though, I often find
myself wandering around campus. When wandering around campus I usually look for the best spots for me just in case I want to sit around and
relax. Of my favorite spots to visit, they are closer and very appealing to see. They however are also very popular places to visit, so many students
visit them. What I mean by closer, is that these places are not too far away from my dorm on campus. I live in the Wilson Hall dormitory, known
as one of the Towers, and it is quite far from the main campus. Seeing as I walk everyday to and from the main campus to and from my dorm, I tend
to walk the same route, as to shorten the walk time it takes and be familiar with the area. On days I walk to my favorite spot, which is the second
concrete bench next to the Campanile, and I just sit there for hours and relax. Wilson Hall's dining hall is called Storms, and is located maybe 80–100
yards North of Wilson. As I leave through the North East exit of Wilson Hall, I cross the diagonal sidewalk running from Wilson to Storm's East
Entrance/Exit. I tend to eat supper at Storms, and as I exit through the same entrance, I leave and grab an apple to eat along the way heading to the
Campanile. I walk up Welch Street,

Descriptive Essay About The Library
As a young girl, my parents worked on weekdays, most hours a day. I was always too young to go to school, so I spent the day with my nanny, doing
whatever it is that little girls do. But when my parents had work off on the weekends, we would get in the car and go spend time at a wonderful
structure called the library. The library is an ancient structure way back before phones. Here in the modern age, you can almost never find a
millennial in the library. When I was young, the library seemed to be the size of a palace, so enchanting and magical. The library is a place of peace
and intelligence, where everyone is silent. I love the library, and when I was little, the Saturdays I went with my parents to the library were cherished
times. I...show more content...
However, my summer ended, and it was back to school, with no time for visits to the library. Then, the hurricane that caused devastating damage to
our town. Hurricane Sandy of 2012 was angry, fiercely creating a path of destruction bringing the Oceanport Library down in her rage. I could do
nothing about the library, so there it sat like a sad, helpless puppy. Books were destroyed. They were floating down the streets, miserably. Again, the
library became a distant memory, this time bitter–sweet. This past year 2017, I was struck with the memory of the Oceanport Library when I needed
to borrow a book for a school project. I had not been to any library in almost three years. My mother drove me to the Shrewsbury Library, and I was
expecting it to be boring, like most millennials. However, when I opened the heavy metal door, my nose was flooded with that sweet, familiar
smell of crisp, yellowed pages. As I smiled, the memories washed over me like a wave. Spending my afternoon there was nostalgic and joyful. In
the middle of my book, I was politely interrupted by my younger sister, Ellie. She had an enormous smile on her face, and was showing me the books
she picked out. Smiling at her, I remembered all the cherished days I spent in the libraries of New Jersey. I know that she shares the love of reading like
I do, and she will have so many nostalgic memories when she is older. Right

A Observation Paper On The Library
For my Participant Observation Paper, I decided to go and observe the library. It seemed like a nice, quiet place to go for an assignment like this. I
also thought that not many other people would choose this place, so it would be unique. The observations I made at the library astounded me; I had
never noticed these things before. Here is a quick summary of my observations: the mood of the atmosphere was changed by the color, temperature,
lighting, and etc. in the library. Another thing was that people were unexpectedly critical towards one another, but teenagers didn't seem to care
about the distinctive origins of some of the individuals in the library. Finally, the body language of the adults varied significantly to the body
language of the adolescents. Everyone was divided by their dissimilarities and I could not believe the vast cavity. I went to observe the library on the
17th of September, which was a Saturday. The time I was there was from 11:20– 12:00. This was a startlingly eventful time, particularly because it
was a Saturday. The location of the library is Washington, Iowa. It is located on the square. This was where I made my observations. The
environment in the library was welcoming and very quiet. The lighting was soft and gave the structure a warm yellow tone. There were windows
wherever you could fit them, letting in a decent share of natural light. Most of the colors in the library were distinctive shades of green and brown,
which worked well together. They

BACKGROUND
I am proposing for a library to be put into the Exton campus of Delaware County Community College. There is currently not a library at this location.
In order to have the use of a campus library we must go to the main campus of the college, which is approximately thirty to forty minutes from the
Exton location. There are many...show more content...
A library that is closer for students would promote good learning habits and study skills. Students may not wait until the last minute to do their projects
and papers because resources are more readily available to them.
PROPOSED ENVIRONMENT
The proposed environment will consist of a fully functioning library that is open to students and faculty free of charge. If an outside member of the
community would like to use the library the school could charge them a small membership fee. This will help to raise revenue for the college and the
library.
For the first few years the library may be small but as years pass the library can expand to have more books, magazines, research materials, computers,
etc. The library can also share with the main campus library in order to expand their materials and capabilities. I think many students and teachers
would support the addition of a library to the campus.
When the library is first constructed it should have at least a thousand books, several magazine subscriptions, and fifteen computers. Ten of the
computers should be connected to the Internet and have common programs that students would use to write research papers and create presentations.
The other five computers should be connected to research databases only such as Ebsco. There should also be a ?quiet area? where students can study,
do homework, research material, read, write papers, etc. A ?quiet area? would give

The Importance Of Censorship In The Library
President Franklin Roosevelt once famously said, "Books cannot be killed by fire" ("Books Cannot be Killed", para. 2). Since books are filled with
ideas, no one can burn or ban them; people can burn the pages of books, but the ideas will live forever in the minds of the readers. The act of book
burning sourced from censorship. Censorship is the suppression of public communication, whether written or verbal. Government officials, librarians,
and even religious organizations censor materials, typically because the materials contain either politically incorrect thoughts, offensive ideas, or
subject–sensitive plots. Although censorship is acceptable for religious groups to censor materials within their groups, it is unacceptable for
librarians to censor materials within their library. Librarians should not promote their own beliefs in a library when purchasing materials. First,
librarians should provide materials which fulfill patrons' book requests because censorship limits citizens' freedom to read. Reading a book
informs people; it takes readers on journeys to a place far from reality. Since reading books provides numerous benefits to the reader, freedom to
read is critically important. As the American Library Association (ALA) stated, "The freedom to read is essential to our democracy" (Intellectual
Freedom, 2010, p. 203). Reading is essential to democracy because it allows people to further form their beliefs and ideas or to research differing
viewpoints. Reading is also

Academic Libraries
Once known as one of the undebatable centers of intellectual thought and process on every college and university campus, academic libraries are
being unseated from their position of power and authority by the very industry they've worked years to create space and business for. In the past,
journals and publishers fought for the favor of academic librarians and buyers, vying for their attention and preference when it came to stocking the
vast capacity of stacks that most institutions offer. Conversely in 2017, the publishing market has begun to turn the tables on the former reign holders.
In the following pages this paper will examine the shift of power between books to different resources from subscription services, e–books, and...show

The first new application of media for libraries is subscription and database based services. The term, "subscription based services" may very well be
the subprime mortgage bond of the library universe. Unlike the traditional purchase of a physical publication, a digital subscription based repository is
only available for as long as the fees are paid. These terms of use push universities not only into large, recurring costs but also create pressure for the
institution to continue the subscription. Not only does the school not want to interrupt ongoing research but also student bodies come to rely and
expect the presence of specific subscriptions. The prospect of switching to another service, although perhaps cheaper in the primary cost, carries
additional costs such as training/education, user registration as well as IT support in its setup. Companies that offer these subscription based services
appear to very well rely on these barriers to swapping.
Subscriptions are an effective way to help students with current research materials but is costly and must be renewed. These subscriptions help
students access the materials everywhere on campus and around the world, which is reducing the number of books and journals checked out in person.
This is downgrading libraries use of books and resources. This can be evidenced by the bold pricing strategies implemented by such companies. For
instance,

The Importance Of Technology In The Library
Library has been a great source for information literacy. Being a cheap source and having books to read library were popular years ago and were one
of the most used sources for education. Library had played huge role in promoting information literacy but, with the advancement in technology people
are now open to a lot sources and on this run libraries were seem to be neglected due to the lack of updated information in the library. Libraries have
gone through some necessary changes that have helped updating information available there.
Technology is developing day by day. There is not a single question that Google does not have. We can find answers to each and every question in
Google. But due to the limited space in library there are situations where we cannot find a book that is relevant with our topic. For instance, I wanted to
know about current political situation in United States but the library has books only about the political history of United States then there is no use of
reading the book. I would rather prefer going to the internet and searching about the political history in United States. This shows using technology can
most of the time be beneficial and saves a lot of time. Closely looking the pros of using technical sources library has also started using computer as a
part of library. This change that the library has bought has been beneficial to a lot of people as they can access to whichever source they want either
the book or the information off the

Library Research Reflection
If you had the opportunity to have many of life's questions answered more easily, why wouldn't you? Library Research is a course which focuses on
helping find answers efficiently, accurately and with ease. In addition to aiding me in recognizing manipulating content found in the media, in
conjunction with how I might inadvertently distribute that misinformation, I was able to identify the credibility of sources and realistically decide if
and how I share content with others. This class had an impact in ways I didn't expect––I had originally expected to learn how to sharpen my research
skills for essay–writing in school and decided it would too, be beneficial to my future career in biochemistry research. I have developed new skills
and enhanced ones that I already had. Similarly, this course revealed the areas I need to improve on and in what manner, and prompted new questions
I had not contemplated before. This has been one of the most rewarding outcomes, due to my insatiable desire for learning–we learn better when we ask
questions. One strength I have acquired from taking this course was identifying plagiarism in its many forms. During our week eight lecture, we
learned, not only why plagiarism is wrong and how to identify it, but that it can be unintentional. Given excerpts, some of which were examples of
plagiarism and others which were not, alongside the original article, we classified them correctly into each category and explained why each one
displayed plagiarism or not. Albeit this exercise was far tougher than I expected, after collaborating with my partner and hearing the explanations from
other groups, I started seeing patterns of plagiarism and could then separate them effortlessly. I initially thought that plagiarism was only a conscious
decision, and felt if it was unintentional, that it should be understood as a mistake without dire consequences, apart from being told to correct it.
Subsequently learning what unintentional plagiarism consisted of, I concluded that the best decision is to always cite my work if I speculate the need
to. By citing my work, despite the fact that I have summarized or paraphrased vastly different from the source, I eliminate jeopardizing my education or
career by

Library Advantages And Disadvantages
Introduction
According to Metzger. M.C (2006), "Academic Libraries continually adapt to the technological advances and administrative challenges that follow".
The staff plays an important role between the information and the users. The staff being professional, or paraprofessional should possess the
knowledge of online databases, knowledge of all web features etc. Besides that, the systems may get updated, replaced regularly and hence learning
new or upgraded online resources must be an integral part of every position in the library (Eells. L.L, Jaguszewski, J.M, 2008). I would like to take
Academic libraries as the Library setting.
There are many disadvantages that arise when the Librarians are not aware of the technical knowledge in the academic libraries. In 1994, though there
are computers, Librarians used to function without the basic understanding of computers in the campuses. The presence of the internet on campus was
not supported by training programs or manuals. Along with the technological advancements, Library staff came to know the importance of adapting
themselves to technology....show more content...

Library Reflection
A library is the centerpiece of the public. It's the place of education that stems throughout the entire library campus and is a sanctuary for the young
student like me, to retrieve nearly all information. Any course material in class can be found that same information in the library, simply there are so
many ways to get information nowadays. With the help of books and especially the internet in every public library in each state in the United States.
Students should never feel the loss of information at any time when the library can be a resource. As I was sitting in the first level of the library
on a Wednesday, I didn't really see as many people as I figured I would see. Even when my cousin was going to have a test that same week I was in
fall break, which she is in college. The floor was not empty by any means, but with college students studying for their test. I would have imagined
students scrambling through the bookshelves and all computer were going to be busy, I believe the study habits of students are about as
prosperous as they have ever seen. They're finding different ways, places, and even methods to complete their studying and research. To me, the
way a common student studies has changed even over the past years and the library has been a role in this revolution. Now with newer and better
technology coming in and out, it's normal for every person to want to get their hands on it as quick as possible. Such as apple and Samsung
products, make internet access so much better accessible everywhere you go. Even today computers have become a revolutionary matter and even
has shaped the way libraries look today. It is no secret back when computers were first invented, the ratio of bookshelves to computers were not as
even as they are now. As I look around the library, I see twice as much people on computers than I do within the walls of the bookshelves reading a
book or magazines. While books were the traditional methods for school or business. Now are less likely to provide information, students now want
to use the internet instead the books to be able to get information they need. I remember when I use to use books for everything and now I just use a
computer to turn in my work.

Statement of the Problem
The study proposed a record library system of EMAR Learning Center.
Specifically, it answers the following problem: * What system is an appropriate replacement for using borrower's cards? * How to lessen the time
spent on processing the returned books? * What is an effective and efficient system on recording newly acquired books and to locate which section a
specific book belongs to within the library?
Objectives of the Study
The goal of the study is to develop an automated record library system for EMAR Learning Center and help the school satisfy its needs and ease the
burden of the manual system.
Specifically, it aims to answer the following problems: * There's no need to use a library card or borrower's card in order to borrow books from the
library because this system will provide a form that student will fill–up with name and ID number. * This system will provide search tool that will be
used in locating student's form. By this, it will be easier to identify what books and when these books are being borrowed * This system provide a
search tool to make easy in recording the new incoming books and to identify what section the book belong to.
Significance of the Study
The study is very significant to the following: * To the librarian in terms of manageable record of books

A Study At The Library Alone Essay

  • 1. A Study At The Library Alone Essay The main argument of this paper is that most people are socialized to study at a specific spot. We will be focusing on people who come to study at the library alone. Most people become comfortable at a specific space in the library because of a general habitus of finding a space that is considered their "own place" to study at. In Becoming a firefighter, Matthew Desmond describes a general habitus as a "system of dispositions and ways about and acting in the world that is constituted early on in life" (Desmond, Ethnograhy, 391). Humans are disposed to studying in the same secluded spot because we take ownership of the space. Charles Horton Cooley writes in The looking glass self that "if we think of a secluded part of the woods as 'ours', it is because we think, also that others do not go there"(Cooley, The Presentation of Self in Everday Life ,32). People often think of their usual study space as theirs. Therefore, when entering the library, they often head straight for their space. When I was writing this paper, it was harder for me to separate my habits from other people`s and just sticking to my observations. I also struggled with identifying a phenomenon because many of the behaviors displayed would be considered normal behaviors. After reading Desmond`s theory on habitism in Becoming a firefighter, I came to the conclusion that they were normal because at Bard we are socialized to act a certain way. I believe that the strongest aspect of my paper is how I analyze the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. My Experience At The Library Bruno Ouattara November 2013 880 390 199 Sociology 100 In November 19th, 2013, it was raining when I came to school. Just after my English class, I was heading to the library to find a quiet place where I could study. I saw a group of Asian's students coming out from the library, and one of them, a girl, was holding an umbrella. So I walked straight to her and I soon as I got very close to her, without introducing myself, I grabbed her umbrella. Surprised she didn't know what to expect. She just dropped the umbrella in my hands, and I walked inside the library with the umbrella on top of my head. She stood under the rain, very surprised and was looking back...show more content... There were also some students standing just against the wall and smoking cigarettes. Just in the entrance of building 25, I saw a security guy passing by, and talking to students from table to table. I think he was trying to tell them to put their phones away and do not leave them at the table because they can be stolen. While I was getting closer and closer the girl and her friends were trying to get together in one side and let me pass, and they were kind of slowing down because I was running into them. But I think I didn't give too much choice to her; she released the umbrella because she was surprised or afraid; so she didn't resist. But after she released it, she felt weird to let me take the umbrella; I can tell in her surprising's face. Her friends walked back and all of the sudden they started to talk in Chinese or Japanese (I don't actually know the difference) like 30 seconds after I took the umbrella and started to walk back in the library after me. The smokers were watching the scene and one of them was laughing. They started to kind of want to follow me inside and I didn't just walked away, instead I stopped just inside to look one more time and see if someone was going to talk. The lady at the front desk was looking quiet and some others students inside also. When they come in front of me, I realized they needed an answer. And that influenced me to give up. • 3. Digital Libraries Essay Ashley Tipton Digital Libraries Introduction A simple definition of a digital library is a library where collections are stored in digital formats instead of physical formats and accessible via computers. The content can then be accessed locally, as in within a library, or remotely such as from other places on a college campus or from a user's home. Many people believe that digital libraries are the future. There are also those that still hold on to the thought that the traditional brick and mortar building is the way a library is supposed to be and that moving to the digital real is not the direction a library should be heading. History The information revolution is one of the marvels of the 20th century. We are now living in an...show more content... Awareness of needs provide the insight to use professional skills and talents to greater effect. The meaning of this is that it is important for the user to have information that is easily locatable and easily accessible. Nowadays, library patrons have become information conscious and no longer want to wait and go to the library to find what they need. They want to access it access the information electronically. The process of digitizing implies the production of a digital surrogate for a physical object (Unsworth, 2004). There are many different items in libraries that are digitized. This ranges from serials that can be found either in print or online to rare books and archives that are now being preserved in a digital format. There are many positive outcomes that come from digitizing parts of a library's collection. There is less cost in reshelving the item. The item is simultaneously available to multiple users. The item does not have to be replaced, since it is not being used and there is no chance of it being lost. Also, if it is a rare item, it can be preserved more easily as it will be less frequently handled. Why Go Digital? The most valuable aspect of the digital library is its reduction in cost. There are many fees that are negated such as staff pay, book maintenance, rent, and additional books. This makes the cost of the digital library much less to maintain than that of a traditional library. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Library Essay Libraries are an essential part of the community. However not all societies have libraries. Libraries require centralized populations, economic development and political stability for their survival. In the past, temples, municipals and governments had libraries. These libraries...show more content... Therefore, Julius Caesar started building a public library, but died before he completed it. Asinius Pollio completed the library. This established was followed by more public libraries. Other missions of libraries that existed in the past included maintaining scholarly mission, religious mission, for instance, monastic libraries of middles ages, educational mission, for instance university, humanistic mission and promoting national pride (Rubin 39). In the modern world, libraries have certain missions that they serve. The establishment of the printing press made more books available to many people. This encouraged the establishment of more libraries. In the United States of America, libraries came up with new missions. First, libraries emerged with the mission of self–improvement. Advances in mechanical technology in the eighteenth century led to industrial revolution that improved the economy and community health. This meant that a certain class of citizens had more leisure time, for self–improvement. This favored the emergence o f new libraries. The social library emerged with an aim of helping individuals improve through the search of truth. Therefore, they provided literature and books that provided information, which could help people to gain knowledge and improve their character. In the current world, libraries provide information that people have access to, and use it for their own improvement (Rubin 47). Secondly, the modern world Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Descriptive Essay About A Library Every person has their place. The kind of place where the world could be ending but as long as their in that special place, they can leave the world in peace. For some it's their hometown, the gym, a certain cafe or restaurant, or even a random spot with a sentimental meaning. For me, this place is the Edmon Low Library here at Oklahoma State University. As a high school student, the library was a place to check out books and print papers for free. The idea of spending hours there was unheard of, and never spiked an interest in me. Once I started my freshman year in college, this speculation quickly changed. From the first time I toured Oklahoma State University, I wondered why the dazzling Georgian style library was so overwhelmingly huge. It was in the heart of osu near the main campus facilities: the Union, Theta Pond, and various classroom buildings. Being that the library was such a main attraction, I was curious to know why. I wondered why there was a cafe and why each level had a different noise limit. All of these things seemed great, but unnecessary at the same time. After all, the only thing the library was good for in my mind was basic needs for my english class. My first day at osu I decided to see what all the hype about this special library was. The more I explored the different levels, the more I found. Not only were there books, free printing, a cafe, and noise accommodations, but there were also reserved study rooms, 3D printing, subject librarians, free electronic checkouts, and so much more. The resources available to me and all OSU students from just a library seemed almost too good to be true. From the restoring smell of coffee on the first floor, to the antique smell of old books on the 4th floor, nothing makes you want to pull out a good book more than Edmon Low. I was almost convinced the staff wanted students to move in, being that they are opened 24 hours on weekdays. With students being so busy, Edom Low is a convenient place to go no matter the time of day. Whether you're a student coming home from a late night shift not wanting to wake up your roommates to study, or even just need to pull an all nighter for that big test, there is no such thing as being a disturbance at the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Descriptive Essay On Campus Iowa State University offers a large campus. The campus itself entirely is around the size of my hometown. I have lived on campus for a few weeks now, and I know most of the campus, yet spend most of my time in my dorm. Whenever I am not in my dorm or in class though, I often find myself wandering around campus. When wandering around campus I usually look for the best spots for me just in case I want to sit around and relax. Of my favorite spots to visit, they are closer and very appealing to see. They however are also very popular places to visit, so many students visit them. What I mean by closer, is that these places are not too far away from my dorm on campus. I live in the Wilson Hall dormitory, known as one of the Towers, and it is quite far from the main campus. Seeing as I walk everyday to and from the main campus to and from my dorm, I tend to walk the same route, as to shorten the walk time it takes and be familiar with the area. On days I walk to my favorite spot, which is the second concrete bench next to the Campanile, and I just sit there for hours and relax. Wilson Hall's dining hall is called Storms, and is located maybe 80–100 yards North of Wilson. As I leave through the North East exit of Wilson Hall, I cross the diagonal sidewalk running from Wilson to Storm's East Entrance/Exit. I tend to eat supper at Storms, and as I exit through the same entrance, I leave and grab an apple to eat along the way heading to the Campanile. I walk up Welch Street, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Descriptive Essay About The Library As a young girl, my parents worked on weekdays, most hours a day. I was always too young to go to school, so I spent the day with my nanny, doing whatever it is that little girls do. But when my parents had work off on the weekends, we would get in the car and go spend time at a wonderful structure called the library. The library is an ancient structure way back before phones. Here in the modern age, you can almost never find a millennial in the library. When I was young, the library seemed to be the size of a palace, so enchanting and magical. The library is a place of peace and intelligence, where everyone is silent. I love the library, and when I was little, the Saturdays I went with my parents to the library were cherished times. I...show more content... However, my summer ended, and it was back to school, with no time for visits to the library. Then, the hurricane that caused devastating damage to our town. Hurricane Sandy of 2012 was angry, fiercely creating a path of destruction bringing the Oceanport Library down in her rage. I could do nothing about the library, so there it sat like a sad, helpless puppy. Books were destroyed. They were floating down the streets, miserably. Again, the library became a distant memory, this time bitter–sweet. This past year 2017, I was struck with the memory of the Oceanport Library when I needed to borrow a book for a school project. I had not been to any library in almost three years. My mother drove me to the Shrewsbury Library, and I was expecting it to be boring, like most millennials. However, when I opened the heavy metal door, my nose was flooded with that sweet, familiar smell of crisp, yellowed pages. As I smiled, the memories washed over me like a wave. Spending my afternoon there was nostalgic and joyful. In the middle of my book, I was politely interrupted by my younger sister, Ellie. She had an enormous smile on her face, and was showing me the books she picked out. Smiling at her, I remembered all the cherished days I spent in the libraries of New Jersey. I know that she shares the love of reading like I do, and she will have so many nostalgic memories when she is older. Right Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. A Observation Paper On The Library For my Participant Observation Paper, I decided to go and observe the library. It seemed like a nice, quiet place to go for an assignment like this. I also thought that not many other people would choose this place, so it would be unique. The observations I made at the library astounded me; I had never noticed these things before. Here is a quick summary of my observations: the mood of the atmosphere was changed by the color, temperature, lighting, and etc. in the library. Another thing was that people were unexpectedly critical towards one another, but teenagers didn't seem to care about the distinctive origins of some of the individuals in the library. Finally, the body language of the adults varied significantly to the body language of the adolescents. Everyone was divided by their dissimilarities and I could not believe the vast cavity. I went to observe the library on the 17th of September, which was a Saturday. The time I was there was from 11:20– 12:00. This was a startlingly eventful time, particularly because it was a Saturday. The location of the library is Washington, Iowa. It is located on the square. This was where I made my observations. The environment in the library was welcoming and very quiet. The lighting was soft and gave the structure a warm yellow tone. There were windows wherever you could fit them, letting in a decent share of natural light. Most of the colors in the library were distinctive shades of green and brown, which worked well together. They Get more content on HelpWriting.net

For the first few years the library may be small but as years pass the library can expand to have more books, magazines, research materials, computers, etc. The library can also share with the main campus library in order to expand their materials and capabilities. I think many students and teachers would support the addition of a library to the campus. When the library is first constructed it should have at least a thousand books, several magazine subscriptions, and fifteen computers. Ten of the computers should be connected to the Internet and have common programs that students would use to write research papers and create presentations. The other five computers should be connected to research databases only such as Ebsco. There should also be a ?quiet area? where students can study, do homework, research material, read, write papers, etc. A ?quiet area? would give Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. The Importance Of Censorship In The Library President Franklin Roosevelt once famously said, "Books cannot be killed by fire" ("Books Cannot be Killed", para. 2). Since books are filled with ideas, no one can burn or ban them; people can burn the pages of books, but the ideas will live forever in the minds of the readers. The act of book burning sourced from censorship. Censorship is the suppression of public communication, whether written or verbal. Government officials, librarians, and even religious organizations censor materials, typically because the materials contain either politically incorrect thoughts, offensive ideas, or subject–sensitive plots. Although censorship is acceptable for religious groups to censor materials within their groups, it is unacceptable for librarians to censor materials within their library. Librarians should not promote their own beliefs in a library when purchasing materials. First, librarians should provide materials which fulfill patrons' book requests because censorship limits citizens' freedom to read. Reading a book informs people; it takes readers on journeys to a place far from reality. Since reading books provides numerous benefits to the reader, freedom to read is critically important. As the American Library Association (ALA) stated, "The freedom to read is essential to our democracy" (Intellectual Freedom, 2010, p. 203). Reading is essential to democracy because it allows people to further form their beliefs and ideas or to research differing viewpoints. Reading is also Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Academic Libraries Once known as one of the undebatable centers of intellectual thought and process on every college and university campus, academic libraries are being unseated from their position of power and authority by the very industry they've worked years to create space and business for. In the past, journals and publishers fought for the favor of academic librarians and buyers, vying for their attention and preference when it came to stocking the vast capacity of stacks that most institutions offer. Conversely in 2017, the publishing market has begun to turn the tables on the former reign holders. In the following pages this paper will examine the shift of power between books to different resources from subscription services, e–books, and...show more content... The first new application of media for libraries is subscription and database based services. The term, "subscription based services" may very well be the subprime mortgage bond of the library universe. Unlike the traditional purchase of a physical publication, a digital subscription based repository is only available for as long as the fees are paid. These terms of use push universities not only into large, recurring costs but also create pressure for the institution to continue the subscription. Not only does the school not want to interrupt ongoing research but also student bodies come to rely and expect the presence of specific subscriptions. The prospect of switching to another service, although perhaps cheaper in the primary cost, carries additional costs such as training/education, user registration as well as IT support in its setup. Companies that offer these subscription based services appear to very well rely on these barriers to swapping. Subscriptions are an effective way to help students with current research materials but is costly and must be renewed. These subscriptions help students access the materials everywhere on campus and around the world, which is reducing the number of books and journals checked out in person. This is downgrading libraries use of books and resources. This can be evidenced by the bold pricing strategies implemented by such companies. For instance, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. The Importance Of Technology In The Library Library has been a great source for information literacy. Being a cheap source and having books to read library were popular years ago and were one of the most used sources for education. Library had played huge role in promoting information literacy but, with the advancement in technology people are now open to a lot sources and on this run libraries were seem to be neglected due to the lack of updated information in the library. Libraries have gone through some necessary changes that have helped updating information available there. Technology is developing day by day. There is not a single question that Google does not have. We can find answers to each and every question in Google. But due to the limited space in library there are situations where we cannot find a book that is relevant with our topic. For instance, I wanted to know about current political situation in United States but the library has books only about the political history of United States then there is no use of reading the book. I would rather prefer going to the internet and searching about the political history in United States. This shows using technology can most of the time be beneficial and saves a lot of time. Closely looking the pros of using technical sources library has also started using computer as a part of library. This change that the library has bought has been beneficial to a lot of people as they can access to whichever source they want either the book or the information off the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Library Research Reflection If you had the opportunity to have many of life's questions answered more easily, why wouldn't you? Library Research is a course which focuses on helping find answers efficiently, accurately and with ease. In addition to aiding me in recognizing manipulating content found in the media, in conjunction with how I might inadvertently distribute that misinformation, I was able to identify the credibility of sources and realistically decide if and how I share content with others. This class had an impact in ways I didn't expect––I had originally expected to learn how to sharpen my research skills for essay–writing in school and decided it would too, be beneficial to my future career in biochemistry research. I have developed new skills and enhanced ones that I already had. Similarly, this course revealed the areas I need to improve on and in what manner, and prompted new questions I had not contemplated before. This has been one of the most rewarding outcomes, due to my insatiable desire for learning–we learn better when we ask questions. One strength I have acquired from taking this course was identifying plagiarism in its many forms. During our week eight lecture, we learned, not only why plagiarism is wrong and how to identify it, but that it can be unintentional. Given excerpts, some of which were examples of plagiarism and others which were not, alongside the original article, we classified them correctly into each category and explained why each one displayed plagiarism or not. Albeit this exercise was far tougher than I expected, after collaborating with my partner and hearing the explanations from other groups, I started seeing patterns of plagiarism and could then separate them effortlessly. I initially thought that plagiarism was only a conscious decision, and felt if it was unintentional, that it should be understood as a mistake without dire consequences, apart from being told to correct it. Subsequently learning what unintentional plagiarism consisted of, I concluded that the best decision is to always cite my work if I speculate the need to. By citing my work, despite the fact that I have summarized or paraphrased vastly different from the source, I eliminate jeopardizing my education or career by Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Most of the times libraries restricts borrowing or access of the books and journals until and unless the user has some kind of privilege like a student or an ID card . Not Anyone can use a university library until and unless he/she has an valid student ID or even one is allowed to access he /she may be limited to reference the books within the vicinity rather than taking it back home . On the contrary Internet is free and open to all , almost every information available online is free to access and refer , one can take as many copies has he wants of the content available on internet , provided he gives proper referencing and adheres with the copy and intellectual rights . Although some websites ask for membership to access the content and may even charge its user but that is mostly with the commercial websites . It Seldom happens that library is restricted to certain domains of information. Nevertheless it depends how vast is the library : if its an school library the chances are it may be not have the research papers on Nuclear Science but if its an University Library . • 16. Library Advantages And Disadvantages Introduction According to Metzger. M.C (2006), "Academic Libraries continually adapt to the technological advances and administrative challenges that follow". The staff plays an important role between the information and the users. The staff being professional, or paraprofessional should possess the knowledge of online databases, knowledge of all web features etc. Besides that, the systems may get updated, replaced regularly and hence learning new or upgraded online resources must be an integral part of every position in the library (Eells. L.L, Jaguszewski, J.M, 2008). I would like to take Academic libraries as the Library setting. There are many disadvantages that arise when the Librarians are not aware of the technical knowledge in the academic libraries. In 1994, though there are computers, Librarians used to function without the basic understanding of computers in the campuses. The presence of the internet on campus was not supported by training programs or manuals. Along with the technological advancements, Library staff came to know the importance of adapting themselves to technology....show more content... • 18. Library Reflection A library is the centerpiece of the public. It's the place of education that stems throughout the entire library campus and is a sanctuary for the young student like me, to retrieve nearly all information. Any course material in class can be found that same information in the library, simply there are so many ways to get information nowadays. With the help of books and especially the internet in every public library in each state in the United States. Students should never feel the loss of information at any time when the library can be a resource. As I was sitting in the first level of the library on a Wednesday, I didn't really see as many people as I figured I would see. Even when my cousin was going to have a test that same week I was in fall break, which she is in college. The floor was not empty by any means, but with college students studying for their test. I would have imagined students scrambling through the bookshelves and all computer were going to be busy, I believe the study habits of students are about as prosperous as they have ever seen. They're finding different ways, places, and even methods to complete their studying and research. To me, the way a common student studies has changed even over the past years and the library has been a role in this revolution. Now with newer and better technology coming in and out, it's normal for every person to want to get their hands on it as quick as possible. Such as apple and Samsung products, make internet access so much better accessible everywhere you go. Even today computers have become a revolutionary matter and even has shaped the way libraries look today. It is no secret back when computers were first invented, the ratio of bookshelves to computers were not as even as they are now. As I look around the library, I see twice as much people on computers than I do within the walls of the bookshelves reading a book or magazines. While books were the traditional methods for school or business. Now are less likely to provide information, students now want to use the internet instead the books to be able to get information they need. I remember when I use to use books for everything and now I just use a computer to turn in my work. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
