Maitland was based on primary and
secondary industries.
Maitland was used as a service centre for
farmers around the area and housed many
people who worked in mining,
manufacturing, construction companies
around the Maitland area.
9. Changes in Employment.
During the 1980s many of the mining and construction companies around Maitland restructured.
This meant the closure of many mines and industrial plants which saw many people loose their
jobs.
When the companies reopened new technology and machines took over the jobs of many
people.
This resulted in a shift from primary and secondary industries to tertiary sectors.
As the number of visitors increased due to the Hunter Valley being a prime location of holidays
more jobs became available in education, health and the tourist industry.
