2. SATELLITES
Satellites or natural satellites are bodies which are smaller than planets and mainly
circulate a planet just like the planets circulates the sun.
A planet can have many satellites.
Moon is the only satellite that circulates the Earth.
3. FORMATION
There are many hypothesis on how the moon was formed.
The main four are:
1. Fission theory
2. Impact-trigger theory
3. Capture theory
4. Co-accretion theory
4. FISSIONTHEORY
The moon was once a part of the Earth.
Somehow separated from it from early in the formation may
be due to rapid spin of the Earth.
It is believed to come from the Pacific Ocean basin.
Limitations:
No fossil evidence.
Earth’s spin was not so powerful.
6. CAPTURETHEORY
Moon was created somewhere else.
It was captured by the gravitational
pull of the earth.
Limitations
The gravitational pull cannot be so
synchronized.
Cannot describe why the moon has
such a small iron core.
7. CO-ACCRETIONTHEORY
The Moon was formed at the same
time as planet Earth.
Formed from same nebula.
Limitations:
The materials don’t match.
11. WHATWILL HAPPEN IFTHERE IS NO MOON
It would change the global altitude of the ocean.
The Moon has been a stabilizing factor for the axis of rotation of the Earth. So it
would affect rotation.
There would be no tide and so different species in the coastline.
The eyesight of many mammals is sensitive to moonlight. The level of adaptation
of night vision would be very different without the Moon.
There would be different life forms.
The Moon had a key role in the emergence of science, and in our understanding of
our place in the universe.
12. MOON AND US
Studying the Moon helped us determine distances in the solar
system and the size of celestial objects. By studying lunar phases,
for example, people were able to determine how far the Moon is
from the Earth, the size of the Earth, and our distance from the
sun. More recently, the Moon was the terrain where the space
race took place between two political systems, allowing for great
technical and scientific achievements. The Moon has inspired
humankind to learn how to travel to space, and to bring life
beyond Earth’s cradle.
