Hi, and thanks for attending the webinar today. Here’s a quick look at the agenda for the next hour.
We’ve switched up the format a bit in that I’ll be highlighting new features one or two at a time, then pause for Steve to give a demo of those features.
New features we’ll cover today include expanded file format support, the new select by attribute, time-series, smart-text, and layer-filter tools. Expanded support for tiled-web and web-feature services, the new MapInfo Raster SDK, and multi-resolution virtual raster support.
We’ll also give a quick overview of our new subscription licensing.
Feel free to type your questions in as we go along, and we’ll have plenty of time for them at the end of the session.
Thanks for being here, and let’s get started.
Let’s start with a quick overview of MapInfoPro.
MapInfo Pro can be described as a complete, desktop mapping solution for the geographic information system (GIS) analyst to manage, analyze, visualize, and publish location-based data.”
Similar to Esri’s ArcGIS and QGIS, MapInfo Pro is one of the most recognized and widely-used GIS software packages in the world today. First released in 1986 by the MapInfo corporation, it is currently shipped in 17 different languages and has over 100,000 users globally.
So what does MapInfo do?
Geographic information systems, or GIS, can be described as the display and analysis of data based on it’s location on the Earth. Location-based data can consist of vectors such as points, which may represent real-world objects such as cities, houses, or stores,
and polygons, which may represent real-world objects such as city-limits, a housing parcel, or a business’s sales region. These points, or locations, can have additional information added to them that can help people make decisions.
Location data can also come as raster data, which contains a grid of individual pixels with individual values. Perhaps the most recognizable type of raster data is satellite imagery, where the pixels represent the light reflected from the ground back to the sensor. Raster data can also be a classified grid, where pixel values are representative of a certain characteristic of the data. Classified rasters could represent things like land cover as a series of different colors or heat maps that display clusters of activity in a region.
In either case, bringing together and analyzing different types of information in an area can produce insights that can be missed without the context of location.
MapInfo Pro is designed to take next generation location analytics and make them easy to use for our customers. The major themes for MapInfo Pro 2021 are Enhanced visualization, increased access to different types of data, and the ability to streamline work processes with some of the new tools we’ve built for this release.
Below you can see some of the ways we’ve worked towards this vision by allowing our users to access more data than ever, better leverage cloud-based services, visualize changes over time, and more.
Let’s dive into some of these topics a bit deeper and explore just how the latest version of MapInfo Pro delivers in each of these categories.
With the latest release we’ve expanded our support for different file formats, meaning this latest version of MapInfo supports more data types than we ever have before. More data formats means less time trying to configure your data to be analyzed which gives you the ability to leverage information from a larger number of different data types.
Some examples of newly supported formats include GeoJSON, vector tiles, scalable vector graphics, and more, and it’s important to note that this includes both read and write capabilities being available for most formats.
Now let me pass it to Steve to show a quick demo.
Thanks Steve, I appreciate it….to help manage all of that new data, we’ve added some new tools that allow our users to pull information from their data more easily than ever before.
The new Select by attribute tool allows users to quickly select a subset of their data based on any number of attributes contained in the dataset. This is an easy to use tool that virtually eliminates the need for SQL and provides multiple options to help you accurately extract the information you’re looking for. This data can then be exported to a new file and reduce the number of unwanted records that are being worked with. We’ve had some great feedback on this new tool, so let me give it back to Steve for another quick demo.
Thanks Steve.
Now let’s take a look at one of my favorite features of the release, the new time series tool.
This latest release allows our customers to visualize data that contains a time component. This means that the data not only identifies where something happened, but when it happened as well.
These time series can offer new insights into how different events occur over time allowing you to more easily identify relationships between different datasets. We’ve seen several use cases for this tool, including weather, crime, routing, and others. The time series tool also allows you to create compelling visualizations with a wide array of playback controls that are built right into the interface. The time series can also be exported to share information and insights throughout the organization.
On top of time series, we’ve also added new tools help folks simplify the layout process with things like enhanced text labels and new layer filter tools which allow you to quickly filter data layers for optimal display. This allows users to better define and label their maps to ensure their data displays in a way that accurately captures the information they’re trying to convey.
Alright, I’m going to pass it back to Steve for a demo.
Thanks again,
Over the past few releases, we’ve developed MapInfo Pro to support cloud-based data and services, and we’ve expanded our capabilities with this release.
We’ve added the ability to easily re-project tiled based web services, which includes the Bing aerial image layer that is available to all MapInfo Pro users. This helps to align cloud-based assets with any data you might be using that is housed locally. This improves both the accuracy of your layovers as well as the overall look of your map. It’s important to note that Tiled services can be re-projected into any supported projection within MapInfo Pro.
When it comes to cloud-based data, MapInfo Pro now also supports paging for web feature services, or WFS. This allows users to better manage large requests from Web Feature Services by effectively breaking the returned data into manageable-sized chunks of information. The WFS interface also includes the ability to select how you would like to refresh the data, either manually or automatically, if you choose to zoom to another area of the map.
And, back to Steve for the demo.
Thanks Steve,
Another area where we are working to bring next generation analytics to our users is with our raster technology. Raster data can most easily be recognized as satellite imagery, elevation data, or any other dataset that consists of pixels as opposed to points, lines, and polygons, or vectors.
We’ve continued development on the MapInfo Raster SDK, which is our enterprise-ready raster engine that leverages our patented raster format, Multi-Resolution Raster, to solve large problems in industries like telecommunications.
Multi-resolution raster, or MRR, is valued for its ability to compress and access extremely large raster datasets without losing any of the information contained in the file. We’re excited to be able to support those businesses that are looking to leverage MRR in an enterprise environment.
With the latest release, we’ve also enabled support for Multi-resolution Virtual rasters, or MVR’s. MVR’s are small files that contain the instructions to create a derivative raster product on the fly. This saves storage space and computing time by eliminating the need to create and store these derivative products beforehand. MVR’s can contain any number of instructions to create products from a single raster, and work in conjunction with MRR’s to truly optimize large-scale raster analytics.
Back over to you Steve.
Thanks again Steve,
Now let’s talk a bit about subscription…which is essentially a new way to buy and license MapInfo.
MapInfo Pro subscription is includes both license fees and maintenance in one easy price.
It can be bought as a one or three-year license and includes access to all of the upgrades, support, and other benefits usually covered under Maintenance.
On top of that, we’ve eliminated the standard and advanced versions of MapInfo Pro, meaning that all MapInfo subscriptions come with all of our Advanced features right out of the box. This includes access to all of raster technology, including our patented MRR format and the recently released MVR support..
It’s also important to note that for customers with perpetual licenses who may want to switch over to subscription, feel free to contact your representative to discuss any incentives we may have for switching over to subscription. Our goal is to allow our customers to buy MapInfo Pro in a way that suits their budgets.
And with that, we’ll hand it over for questions, but before we start I’d just like to say we’re really excited about this latest version of MapInfoPro. We’ve had a lot of support from Precisely as a company and feel that this latest release truly offers some great features and functions that you’re going to like.
Thanks for taking the time to be here today, and let’s see what we’ve got for questions.
