PARTS OF SPEECH

• Parts of Speech - Words are divided into different kinds of clauses.
• According to their use; that is according to the work they do in a
sentence.
• Eight in Numbers:
 1. Noun
 2.Pronoun
 3. Verb
 4. Adverb
 5. Adjective
 6. Preposition
 7. Conjunction
 8. Interjection
Noun
• Word used as the name of a person, place or thing.
• Examples:
• Madurai is on the river Vaigai.
• Milton is an English Poet.
• Ashoka was a wise king.
• The dog is barking.
Kinds of Noun
• Nouns are of the following:
• Proper Noun
• Common Noun
• Abstract Noun
• Material Noun
• Collective Noun
Proper Noun
• A Special name of a particular person, place, thing or event.
• Always begins with a capital letter.
• Persons— Rajan, Peter, Akbar, Mary, Arun
• Places—Mumbai, London, Paris, Chennai
• Things— Maruti car, Sony Television, Samsung Mobile
• Events— Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games
• Examples: India is our country.
• Suresh is my brother.
• Vaigai is a fast train.
Common Noun
• Common noun is a general, ordinary name of a person, place, animal, thing
or event.
• Persons— Girl, Boy, sister, brother player, singer
• Places— Hospital, Country, Town, Park, Garden
• Things— Book, Bag, clothes, Paper
• Events— comedy show, serial, concert, match
• Examples: The tree is very big.
• The book is on the table
• The child is very cute.
• I met your brother.
Abstract Noun
• The name of quality that a person or things have, action they take or
state they find themselves in.
• These names cannot been seen, heard, touched or tasted – we can only
feel (Kindness, Beauty, happiness, childhood, richness, bravery, etc.,)
• Examples:
• Akbar was the king of Wisdom.
• Honesty is my policy.
• Always speak the truth.
• I love my childhood memories.
Material Noun
• Raw elements or Objects existing in nature
• Iron, rice, cotton, milk, gold, sugar, wheat, water, wool, copper, etc
• Examples:
• Plastic is for ordinary use.
• The house is built of stones.
• Wheat is good for health.
• Iron is a very useful metal.
Collective Noun
• Name of a group or collection of similar persons, animals or things.
• A team of cricketers
• A bouquet of flowers
• A flock of sheep
• A Troup of dancers
• Examples:
• I saw a bunch of grapes.
• A crowd of people gathered.
• A committee of five was appointed.
Pronoun
• A Pronoun is a word which is used in the place of a noun.
• Pronoun have masculine and feminine gender, Singular and plural
forms
• They have three persons:
• First person
• Second Person
• Third Person
First person (Masculine or Feminine)
Singular Plural
I We
Me Our
My Ours
Mine Us
Second Person(Masculine or feminine)
• Singular/Plural
• You, Your, Yours
• Examples:
• This is your garden
• When will you come?
• Your son got first prize.
• Third Person
Singular Neuter Plural (All Genders)

Verb
• Verb is a doing word. It indicates the action in present, past and future
tenses.
• The girl dances well.
• I am studying in Yadava women’s college.
• The teacher shouted loudly.
1. PRIMARY VERBS
• am, is, are, was, were
• He is calm.
• You are very clever.
2. Regular verbs
• verbs whose forms can be changed into past tense by adding ‘ed’ to
the present tense.

3. Irregular verbs
• Verbs whose forms are changed to past tense in other ways.
