Lateral Leadership Ltd, established in 2003, provides a proven governance system
to owners of medium & large businesses. At the heart of the Lateral Leadership®
Governance System lies the Performance Cycle, a series of structures, templates
and processes all directed at driving business performance.
Businesses using the Lateral Leadership®
Governance System can expect:
•	 Regular board meetings with templates for the agenda, annual board plan, board reporting and the recording of action items, all designed
to drive ownership, accountability, responsibility and business results;
•	 To develop a strategic plan which provides the business with a clear vision, purpose, set of values and strategic direction for the next
three years;
•	 To develop an annual business plan containing the objectives, systems and budgets required for the financial year;
•	 Departmental business planning & reporting aligned to the overall strategic direction of the business to empower and equip middle-
management to achieve business targets;
•	 Specific Key Performance Indicators and Annual Performance Objectives detailing the performance standards required for all leaders in
the business;
•	 A scorecard detailing monthly and annual progress against agreed Key Performance Indicators which can be used as the basis of monthly
performance discussions;
•	 To align performance management and professional development frameworks to a relevant competency framework to ensure
organisational alignment;
•	 An individual performance plan for each leader in the business, updated quarterly, measuring performance against the agreed
competencies and business objectives;
•	 Individual development plans for all leaders in the business who wish to develop further so as to improve performance and succession;
•	 A succession plan identifying business-wide succession opportunities and gaps and the associated development timeframes required;
•	 Regular reviews of business performance and prioritised action plans to ensure momentum is maintained toward overall strategic objectives;
•	 Regular alignment meetings between Lateral Leadership and the business owner to ensure actions and results remain aligned to agreed
outcomes;
•	 A communication plan detailing the key communication structures & platforms throughout the business ensuring team members at all
level remain informed of events and progress; and
•	 Online access to dozens of templates and resources to assist with timely execution.

Advisory Boards. We specialise in the establishment and leadership of Advisory Boards. The Lateral Leadership®
governance
system contains all of the templates and processes needed for businesses to implement a proven high performing governance
structure. Regular board meetings will ensure transparency and accountability across the business.
Business Coaching. Whilst coaching is an integral part of our Advisory Board services, businesses sometimes need a coach
without using our full suite of governance services. Individual coaching is a way of keeping business owners and / or
management on track and aligned to the strategic goals of the business.
Business Health Check. The Lateral Leadership®
Business Health Check is a simple and efficient way to get an independent
strategic assessment of your business. The Health Check is carried out by way of a site visit and meetings with a cross section
of people in the business. The key themes and observations are then reported back to the business owner in a bullet point
format, categorised by strategic pillars, including recommendations for business improvement.
Performance Excellence Forum. This forum brings together non-competing business owners from across the country to
assess and contribute to performance excellence. As a member of the forum, business owners can expect to host an annual
visit onsite and then visit other participants businesses quarterly. A two-year rotation allows for two-visits to each business
before rotating off the forum and allowing space for a new business owner to join.

Stephen Nelson is a Wellington based licensed partner in Lateral Leadership. Prior to joining the
Lateral Leadership team, Stephen was the Chief Executive of a company that operated three Mitre
10 MEGA home improvement stores in Wellington. Stephen’s role in this family-owned business saw
him lead a team of more than 300 and he was responsible for turnover in excess of $100 million.
Stephen is extremely well versed in all aspects of running a successful retail and trade operation, as
well as a strong background in business generally. He is used to operating at a strategic and
governance level and particularly enjoys the flexibility and sense of empowerment that exists in
owner operated businesses.
Stephen enjoys seeing success, particularly when it relates to the development of leadership, people
