Today
Learning Intentions:
Today we are going to consider why it is important to monitor our
progress during our PDP.
I can:
• Explain what is meant by monitoring
• Provide a minimum of three reasons why monitoring is important
• Answer the following question:
Explain why it is necessary to monitor our personal development
plan (3)

Monitoring
What is it?
Monitoring is the process of regularly checking your progress.
Monitoring your personal development plan allows you to see
how effective your approach is and gives you data that can
inform future development.
What does this mean for us?
Monitoring is about us checking on how well we are doing in
terms of improving our physical weakness (dig) and our mental
weakness (decision making, concentration, reboundability or
mental toughness)

Explain why it is necessary to monitor our personal development
plan (PDP) (3)
Let us start by breaking down this question to make sure we understand
what is being asked;
1. The command word is EXPLAIN – this means we are being asked to give
reasons for or why we do something. This means that our answer should
follow a PEgI structure. We should provide a reason for doing something
(EXAMPLE) and then explaining why it is important (IMPACT). This is
backed up by the term ‘necessary’ meaning we must say why it is
important/why it is beneficial to us.
2. The question then asks us about our personal development plan (PDP).
This means we should focus on why it is important to check the progress
we are making in our physical and mental factor (our process of improving
our weakness)
3. It is worth 3 marks meaning we need at least 3 clear and detailed
reasons. (3 PEgI’s)

When we monitor there are many methods we can use however, the two
main ones are recording information using our training diary and re-testing.
The training diary allows us to check:
- Our success rate against our short term target
- Our match scores against our short term target
- Our internal thoughts and feelings about how we feel we are doing
- Our teacher feedback about how he/she thinks we are doing
Re-testing allows us to:
- Re-test our GOB to compare new results against our first ones
- Re-test our Mental Toughness Questionnaire to compare new results
against our first one
- Re-test our Mental Self-Reflection Sheet to compare new results against
our first ones

WHY is this IMPORTANT? WHY should we CHECK progress?
Below are a number of reasons why we should monitor our progress
REASON FOR = EXPLAIN NECESSARY = IMPACT
Monitoring is necessary as it allows me to
judge if my personal development plan and
choice of approaches are effective…
This means I can see if I am improving or not. If
I am improving, I can look to move on to a
more challenging approach. Whereas, if I am
not improving, I may need to change and
adapt my plan perhaps by changing the
approach, changing the structure of my week,
changing the time spent on my approach etc.
Monitoring is necessary as it can boost my
motivation levels…
• What could happen to your motivation
levels if you see improvements?
• Then, what could happen to your effort
levels as a result?
• And then, what could happen to your
progress as a result?
Monitoring is necessary as it can allow targets
to be reset or new targets to be made if they
have already been met…
• What could happen to our planning if we
can adjust targets or make new targets?

WHY is this IMPORTANT? WHY should we CHECK progress?
Below are a number of reasons why we should monitor our progress
REASON FOR = EXPLAIN NECESSARY = IMPACT
Monitoring is necessary because I can measure
my progress by making comparisons between
pre and post results…
• What will this do for my level of
confidence if I can see where I was
compared to where I am now?
• What might this mean for my effort?
Monitoring is necessary because it can identify
when I have achieved enough and allow me to
identify any new area of development that may
be more of a priority…
• What will this do for me if I can redirect my
focus to something new and more
important ?

Explain why it is necessary to monitor our personal development plan
(PDP)(3)
Below is a ‘high standard’ model example of a 1 mark answer following the
PEgI structure:
‘There are a number of reasons why it is necessary to monitor my
performance development. (P)
First of all, monitoring is necessary because I can judge how effective my
personal development plan and choice of approaches have been in developing
my performance. (Eg)
This will let me see if I am improving or not. Should monitoring allow me to
see that my results and performance are improving this could mean that my
plan is working and I could keep working in the same way or even progress
it. However, if monitoring allows me to see little to no progress is being
made I can change my plan and my approaches to better suit my needs by
making it more realistic to my ability level. For example if I am not
improving in movement repetition drills, monitoring would help me make the
decision to take a step back to static repetition drills.’ (I)

Your task:
Answer the following question
- Explain why it is necessary to monitor our personal
development plan (3)
Success criteria
- Provide one POINT
- Provide an EXAMPLE and IMPACT
- Provide another EXAMPLE and IMPACT
- Provide a final EXAMPLE and IMPACT
To ensure you are providing enough detail you may wish to add
another EXAMPLE and IMPACT. We have discussed 5 in this
lesson so the content is there for you to work from.
