Collect Data
This process of your portfolio begins with collecting data to discover
how good your performance levels are in one of the factors. All
Nationals will focus on the Physical Factor and the Mental Factor.
Your first step is to collect information about your performance standard
in Volleyball.
Please remember that volleyball is the activity you use to complete your
portfolio, it is not a one off assessment. However, the process of
carrying out a Personal Development Plan (PDP) in volleyball should
significantly improve your ability to play the game.

We are going to collect information about your performance and we
need to identify what your strengths are and what your development
needs are. Once we identify your development needs we can then
design a PDP to turn these development needs in to strengths.
In order to identify your development needs we need to use different
methods to collect information about you. This could be in the form of
a video, a questionnaire, a checklist and/or an observation schedule.
Collecting information is such an important process. If you do it wrong
then you will not identify your true weakness and therefore your
performance will never improve.
What challenges do you think we will face when gathering
information?

Accuracy of Results
When collecting information a
challenge we will face is
making sure the results we
obtain are accurate?
How can we ensure our results
are accurate?
Consider the following points
–
• Using a VIDEO
• WHO is completing the
method
A challenge we will face is ensuring
accuracy. Therefore, we will video our
performances and then watch them
back.
Why do you think having a Video is more
accurate than having it marked live from
a friend in the class?
A challenge we will face is ensuring
the results are accurate. There are
benefits and limitations to you
marking the results whilst watching
the video.
Why is it more accurate for you to
watch the video?
What might be the issues with you
watching the video?

Reliability of the Results
When collecting information
we must ensure we can rely
on the results and trust
them. It is a challenge
ensuring they are reliable.
A couple of things to
consider would be:
How many matches are we
going to consider?
Do we as a class know
enough about the activity?
A challenge we face is
ensuring we can rely on the
results. We will video
ourselves playing Volleyball
but how many videos would
we need to gain a reliable
result? Is once enough?
A challenge we face is
making sure we can rely on
the information. At what
stage should we start
collecting information?
Would it be lesson 1?

Practicality of the method
A further challenge we may face
is the practicality of the method.
When collecting information the
most important thing is to collect
information that is reliable and
accurate so it is important we do
this in the most straightforward
way that we can.
A few points to consider are:
Is the method complicated?
Is the method quick?
A challenge we face is ensuring
we understand what we are
doing. What will happen to our
results if our method is too
complicated?
A challenge we face is ensuring
we complete the method, gain
results and then begin our PDP.
What will happen if we take too
long in discovering what our
weaknesses are?

Specificity of the method
A challenge we face is making
sure that we know what we
want. If we want to find out
about our skills in volleyball then
we need a method that will give
us this information.
A few points to consider are-
Does the method we use provide
us with the information we are
looking for?
Is the process suitable to where
we are as learners?
We are starting work on the
Physical Factor therefore we
must ask ourselves – Does the
method we are using consider
the physical feature we are
interested in?
What will happen if it does not?
We are all at different stages in
terms of ability but we need a
valid and fair method that suits
us all.
What will happen if the means of
gaining information is too hard
for some but too easy for
others?

You are going to collect information on your volleyball performance.
However, before you do you must be aware of the challenges so that you
can avoid collecting information that is not useful to you.
Considering our class discussion and your notes from today’s lesson can
you provide an answer to the following question?
What might you need to consider before you start collecting information
about your performance in volleyball? (4)
This is a 4 mark question so aim to provide 4 paragraphs.
For each paragraph could you consider a different challenge for each?
