WHAT IS VENEER ?
THIN LAYERS OF WOOD OBTAINED BY CUTTING THE WOOD WITH SHARP KNIFE IN ROTARYCUTTER. IN
WOODWORKING, VENEER REFERS TO THIN SLICES OF WOOD AND SOMETIMES BARK, USUALLY THINNER THAN 3
MM, THAT TYPICALLY ARE GLUED ONTO CORE PANELS TO PRODUCE FLAT PANELS SUCH AS DOORS, TOPS AND
PANELS FOR CABINETS, PARQUET FLOORS AND PARTS OF FURNITURE. THEY ARE ALSO USED IN MARQUETRY.
TYPES OF VENEERS
 RAW VENEER HAS NO BACKING ON IT AND CAN BE USED WITH EITHER SIDE FACING UP. IT IS
 IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THE TWO SIDES WILL APPEAR DIFFERENT WHEN A FINISH HAS BEEN
 APPLIED, DUE TO THE CELL STRUCTURE OF THE WOOD.
 PAPER BACKED VENEER IS AS THE NAME SUGGESTS, VENEERS THAT ARE BACKED WITH PAPER.
 THE ADVANTAGE TO THIS IS IT IS AVAILABLE IN LARGE SIZES, OR SHEETS, AS SMALLER PIECES
 ARE JOINED TOGETHER PRIOR TO ADDING THE BACKING. THIS IS HELPFUL FOR USERS THAT
 DO NOT WISH TO JOIN SMALLER PIECES OF RAW VENEERS TOGETHER. THIS IS ALSO HELPFUL
 WHEN VENEERING CURVES AND COLUMNS AS THE VENEER IS LESS LIKELY TO CRACK.
 PHENOLIC BACKED VENEER IS LESS COMMON AND IS USED FOR COMPOSITE, OR ARTIFICIAL
 WOOD VENEERS. DUE TO CONCERN FOR THE NATURAL RESOURCE, THIS IS BECOMING MORE
 POPULAR. IT TOO HAS THE ADVANTAGE OF BEING AVAILABLE IN SHEETS, AND IS ALSO LESS
 LIKELY TO CRACK WHEN BEING USED ON CURVES.

 LAID UP VENEER IS RAW VENEER THAT HAS BEEN JOINED

DIFFICULT AND REQUIRES NO EXPENSIVE TOOLS OR
MACHINERY. VENEERS CAN BE ORDERED THROUGH SOME

 RECONSTITUTED VENEER IS MADE FROM FAST-GROWING
TROPICAL SPECIES. RAW VENEER IS CUT FROM A LOG, AND
DYED IF NECESSARY. ONCE DYED, THE SHEETS ARE LAMINATED
TOGETHER TO FORM A BLOCK. THE BLOCK IS THEN SLICED SO
THAT THE EDGES OF THE LAMINATED VENEER BECOME THE
“GRAIN” OF THE RECONSTITUTED VENEER.

PLYWOOD IS A MATERIAL MANUFACTURED FROM THIN LAYERS OR "PLIES" OF WOOD VENEER THAT ARE GLUED
TOGETHER WITH ADJACENT LAYERS HAVING THEIR WOOD GRAIN ROTATED UP TO 90 DEGREES TO ONE ANOTHER.
IT IS AN ENGINEERED WOOD.
TYPES OF PLYWOOD
SOFTWOOD PLYWOOD IS USUALLY MADE EITHER OF CEDAR, DOUGLAS FIR OR SPRUCE, PINE, AND FIR
OR REDWOOD AND IS TYPICALLY USED FOR CONSTRUCTION AND INDUSTRIAL PURPOSES.THE MOST COMMON
DIMENSION IS 1.2 BY 2.4 MTRS OR THE SLIGHTLY LARGER IMPERIAL DIMENSION OF 4 FEET × 8 FEET. PLYWOOD
FOR FLOORING APPLICATIONS IS OFTEN TONGUE AND GROOVE.THIS PREVENTS ONE BOARD FROM MOVING UP OR
DOWN RELATIVE TO ITS NEIGHBOUR, PROVIDING A SOLID-FEELING FLOOR WHEN THE JOINTS DO NOT LIE OVER
JOISTS.
HARDWOOD PLYWOOD IS MADE OUT OF WOOD FROM DICOT TREES (OAK, BEECH AND MAHOGANY) AND USED FOR
DEMANDING END USES. HARDWOOD PLYWOOD IS CHARACTERIZED BY ITS EXCELLENT STRENGTH, STIFFNESS AND
RESISTANCE TO CREEP. IT HAS A HIGH PLANAR SHEAR STRENGTH AND IMPACT RESISTANCE, WHICH MAKE IT
ESPECIALLY SUITABLE FOR HEAVY-DUTY FLOOR AND WALL STRUCTURES. ORIENTED PLYWOOD CONSTRUCTION HAS
A HIGH WHEEL-CARRYING CAPACITY. HARDWOOD PLYWOOD HAS EXCELLENT SURFACE HARDNESS, AND DAMAGE-
AND WEAR-RESISTANCE.
TROPICAL PLYWOOD IS MADE OF MIXED SPECIES OF TROPICAL TIMBER. TROPICAL PLYWOOD IS SUPERIOR TO
SOFTWOOD PLYWOOD DUE TO ITS DENSITY, STRENGTH, EVENNESS OF LAYERS, AND HIGH QUALITY. IT IS USUALLY
SOLD AT A PREMIUM IN MANY MARKETS IF MANUFACTURED WITH HIGH STANDARDS. IT IS USED FOR
CONSTRUCTION PURPOSES IN MANY REGIONS DUE TO ITS LOW COST.

HIGH-STRENGTH PLYWOOD, ALSO KNOWN AS AIRCRAFT PLYWOOD, IS MADE FROM MAHOGANY, SPRUCE AND/OR
BIRCH USING ADHESIVES WITH AN INCREASED RESISTANCE TO HEAT AND HUMIDITY. VENEERS THAT ARE BONDED
TOGETHER IN A HOT PRESS OVER HARDWOOD CORES OF BASSWOOD OR POPLAR OR FROM EUROPEAN BIRCH
VENEERS THROUGHOUT. BASSWOOD IS ANOTHER TYPE OF AVIATION-GRADE PLYWOOD THAT IS LIGHTER AND
MORE FLEXIBLE THAN MAHOGANY AND BIRCH PLYWOOD BUT HAS SLIGHTLY LESS STRUCTURAL STRENGTH
FLEXIBLE PLYWOOD IS DESIGNED FOR MAKING CURVED PARTS, A PRACTICE WHICH DATES BACK TO THE 1850S IN
FURNITURE MAKING.
AIRCRAFT GRADE PLYWOOD, OFTEN BALTIC BIRCH, IS MADE FROM THREE OR MORE PLIES OF BIRCH,
MARINE PLYWOOD IS MANUFACTURED FROM DURABLE FACE AND CORE VENEERS, WITH FEW DEFECTS SO IT
PERFORMS LONGER IN BOTH HUMID AND WET CONDITIONS AND RESISTS DELAMINATING AND FUNGAL ATTACK.
ITS CONSTRUCTION IS SUCH THAT IT CAN BE USED IN ENVIRONMENTS WHERE IT IS EXPOSED TO MOISTURE FOR
LONG PERIODS. EACH WOOD VENEER WILL BE FROM TROPICAL HARDWOODS, HAVE NEGLIGIBLE CORE GAP,
LIMITING THE CHANCE OF TRAPPING WATER IN THE PLYWOOD AND HENCE PROVIDING A SOLID AND STABLE GLUE
BOND.
OTHER TYPES OF PLYWOODS INCLUDE FIRE-RETARDANT, MOISTURE-RESISTANT, WIRE MESH, SIGN-GRADE, AND
PRESSURE-TREATED. HOWEVER, THE PLYWOOD MAY BE TREATED WITH VARIOUS CHEMICALS TO IMPROVE THE
PLYWOOD'S FIREPROOFING. EACH OF THESE PRODUCTS IS DESIGNED TO FILL A NEED IN INDUSTRY.
MANUFACTURING
FIRSTLY VENEERS ARE MADE THEN EXCESS MOISTURE CONTENT INTO THEM IS REMOVED
AND THEN LAYERS ARE GLUED AND PRESSED EITHER IN HOT OR COLD CONDITIONS. IN HOT
CONDITIONS, 150-200 DEG C, TEMPERATURE IS MARINATED AND HYDRAULIC PRESS IS
USED TO PRESS THE LAYERS. IN COLD TEMPERATURE MAINTAINED UPTO 0.7-1.4N/MM2
PRESSURE IS APPLIED. THEN CUT INTO REQUIRED SIZE AND PACKED FURTHER.

WHAT IS FIBER BOARD?
 FIBERBOARD IS A TYPE OF ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCT THAT IS MADE OUT OF WOOD FIBERS. TYPES OF
FIBERBOARD (IN ORDER OF INCREASING DENSITY) INCLUDE PARTICLE BOARD OR LOW-DENSITY FIBERBOARD
(LDF), MEDIUM-DENSITY FIBERBOARD (MDF), AND HARDBOARD (HIGH-DENSITY FIBERBOARD, HDF).
 FIBER WOOD IS A RECONSTRUCTED WOOD PANEL PRODUCT. IT IS A DRY PROCESS FIBER WOOD
MANUFACTURED FROM WOOD FIBERS. IT IS DENSER THAN PLYWOOD AND PARTICLE BOARD. MDF HAS AN
EVEN DENSITY THROUGHOUT AND IS SMOOTH ON BOTH SIDES .MDF IS RECONSTRUCTED INTO WOOD SHEETS
IN VARIETY OF WIDTHS AND LENGTHS.
 BONDING IS ACHIEVED BY THE ADDITION OF SYNTHETIC RESIN ADHESIVES WHICH ARE CURED UNDER HEAT
AND PRESSURE.
 MDF IS PRIMARILY USED FOR INTERNAL USE APPLICATIONS, DUE TO ITS POOR MOISTURE RESISTANCE.
 TYPES OF FIBERBOARD
1. LOW-DENSITY FIBERBOARD IS ALSO KNOWN AS PARTICLE BOARD AND IS MOSTLY USED AS UNDERLAY IN
VARIOUS ROOMS OF A HOUSE, SUCH AS THE KITCHEN OR BATHROOM AND FOR FURNITURE MANUFACTURING.
DENSITY IS 160-450 KG/M³ AND AMONG THE THREE TYPES, IS THE LESS STRONG. EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE
CHEAPEST, THE FACT THAT IS VULNERABLE TO HUMIDITY MAKES IT INAPPROPRIATE FOR OUTSIDE USE.
1. MEDIUM-DENSITY FIBERBOARD HAS A DENSITY OF 600-800 KG/M³ AND IS THE MOST COMMONLY USED. IT
CAN BE FOUND ON MANY CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS AS WELL AS IN THE FURNISHING INDUSTRY. IN
ADDITION, MEDIUM DENSITY FIBERBOARD IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT FOR THE MANUFACTURING OF
LAMINATE AND ENGINEERED FLOORING. GENERALLY, IT IS A CHEAP PRODUCT BUT DUE TO ITS WEIGHT, IT IS
EASY TO BREAK AND ANY CONTACT WITH WATER SHOULD BE AVOIDED AS IT IS NOT RESISTANT TO IT.
2. HIGH DENSITY FIBERBOARD, ALSO FAMOUS AS HARDBOARD HAS A DENSITY OF 600-1450 KG/M³, AND
COMPARE TO THE OTHER TYPES OF BOARD IT IS HARDER, SOLIDER AND MORE DURABLE. AGAIN IT IS USED
FOR FURNITURE PRODUCTION AS WELL AS FOR FLOORING MANUFACTURE AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
AND ITS STRENGTH AND DURABILITY WILL ENSURE A HIGH QUALITY RESULT.
3. MANUFACTURING
 1)DEBARKING AND CHIPPING-
 THE BARK IS REMOVED FROM THE LOG AND IS THEN STRIPPED. THE CHIPPER DRUM REDUCES THE LOGS
INTO EVENLY SHAPED CHIPS. THE RESULTING CHIPS, IF THEY ARE TOO LARGE, MAY BE RE-CHIPPED.
 2) CHIP WASHER-
 THE CHIPS ARE THEN WASHED TO CHECK FOR THE DEFECTS. THE PROCESS ALSO REMOVES BITS OF BARK,
DIRT, DUST AND SO ON.
3) DEFIBRATOR-
• BEFORE THE DEFIBRATION PROCESS, THE CHIPS ARE COATED WITH MOLTEN PARAFFIN WAX. THIS GLUES THE
CHIPS TOGETHER.
• THE GLUED CHIPS ARE THEN DRIED.
• THE CHIPS ARE THEN FED INTO THE DEFIBRATOR FOR FEW MINUTES UNDER HIGH TEMPERATURE WHILE THEY
ARE GROUND TO FORM A PULP. FROM THE DEFIBRATOR, THE PULP ENTERS A BLOWLINE, WHERE IT IS MIXED
WITH RESIN.
• IT IS THEN PASSED THROUGH DRYER WHERE IT DRIES OUT QUICKLY.
4)MAT FORMATION:
• THE DRY FIBERS ARE THEN CONVEYED TO THE MAT FORMING SYSTEM.
• THE EDGE TRIMMING SAWS TRIM THE EDGES OF THE MAT TO GIVE THE DESIRED LENGTH TO
THE BOARD.
• THE MAT IS THEN PASSED THROUGH THE HOT PRESS TO MAKE THE STRONG BONDING OF THE
FIBER MATS.
• THE BOARDS ARE WEIGHED ON A WEIGHING PLATFORM, COOLED TO ROOM TEMPERATURE IN A
STAR COOLER, AND THEN STACKED ON A PLATFORM. THEY ARE THEN TRIMMED WITH THE HELP
OF THE SAWS TO THE REQUIRED SIZE.
5)STORAGE:
THE TRIMMED MDF BOARDS ARE THEN STACKED IN THE WAREHOUSE FROM WHERE THEY ARE
LOADED INTO THE TRUCKS AS PER THE REQUIRED QUANTITY.
• THE DENSITY OF THE BOARD ,WHERE EVALUATED IN RELATION TO THE DENSITY OF THE FIBER THAT GOES INTO
MAKING THE PANEL, IS IMPORTANT.
• A THICK FIBERBOARD PANEL AT A DENSITY IN THE CASE OF 700-720 KG/M3 MAY BE CONSIDERED AS HIGH
DENSITY IN THE CASE OF SOFTWOOD FIBER PANELS.
• FIBERBOARD IS MADE UP OF 82% WOOD FIBER,9% FORMAL DEHYDRATE RESIN GLUE,8% WATER AND 1%
PARAFFIN WAX.

 THE CHIPS FROM DISK CHIPPERS ARE MORE UNIFORM IN SHAPE AND SIZE THAN FROM OTHER TYPES OF WOOD
CHIPPERS.
 THE PARTICLES ARE THEN DRIED, AND ANY OVERSIZE OR UNDERSIZED PARTICLES ARE SCREENED OUT.
 RESIN IS THEN SPRAYED AS A FINE MIST ONTO THE PARTICLES.
 PANEL PRODUCTION INVOLVES OTHER CHEMICALS INCLUDING WAX, DYES, WETTING AGENTS AND RELEASE
AGENTS, TO AID PROCESSING OR MAKE THE FINAL PRODUCT RESISTANT TO WATER, FIRE OR INSECTS.
 AFTER THE PARTICLES PASS THROUGH A MIST OF RESIN SUFFICIENT TO COAT ALL SURFACES, THEY ARE LAYERED
INTO A CONTINUOUS CARPET.
 THIS 'CARPET' IS THEN SEPARATED INTO DISCRETE, RECTANGULAR 'BLANKETS' WHICH WILL BE COMPACTED IN A
COLD PRESS.
 A SCALE WEIGHS THE FLAKES, AND THEY ARE DISTRIBUTED BY ROTATING RAKES.
 IN GRADED-DENSITY PARTICLEBOARD, THE FLAKES ARE SPREAD BY AN AIR JET THAT THROWS FINER PARTICLES
FURTHER THAN COARSE ONES.
 THE FORMED SHEETS ARE COLD-COMPRESSED TO REDUCE THICKNESS AND MAKE THEM EASIER TO TRANSPORT.
 THE BOARDS ARE COOLED, TRIMMED AND SANDED. THEY CAN THEN BE SOLD AS RAW BOARD OR SURFACE
IMPROVED THROUGH THE ADDITION OF A WOOD VENEER OR LAMINATE SURFACE.
ADVANTAGES OF PARTICLE BOARD:-
THE SURFACES OF PARTICLEBOARD IS
USUALLY SMOOTHER THAN THAT OF PLYWOOD
PARTICLE BOARDS ARE CREATED USING SCRAPS
OF OTHER LUMBER PRODUCTS, WHICH MAKES IT
ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY PARTICLE BOARDS ARE
VERY LIGHT IN WEIGHT. FURNITURE MADE FROM
THESE BOARDS IS RELATIVELY EASY TO TRANSPORT
AND MOVE AROUND. PARTICLE BOARD IS DEFINITELY

1. laminate sheetslook like a layered cake in transverse section. the base layer of the cake is
a hard melamine plastic that gives the veneersheets their stability and shape. the second
layer is made of high-density fibre board (also called particle-board) which like the base
layer, contains melamine that makes it moisture resistant. the third layer in veneer sheets is
decorative and looks polished and ornamental. this is the layer that we get to see. the
decorative layer has prints of high resolution wood grain, stone or tiles. this however, is not
the topmost layer. the last layer, in fact, is the waterproof durable layer that protects against
stains and scratches.
2. once the layers are aligned and stacked on top of each other, they are put under immense
pressure at very high temperatures. the presses have hydraulic rams that apply great
pressure on the layers of raw material at temperatures
reaching up to 400 degrees fahrenheit.
3. after stacking and pressing, the laminate sheetsare
now ready to cool off. after careful inspection, the
laminate sheets are again stacked to cure which helps
Them stabilise. the planks are then profiled which
involves cutting the edges for proper fitting during installation.

THIS GLUES THE CHIPS TOGETHER. • THE GLUED CHIPS ARE THEN DRIED. • THE CHIPS ARE THEN FED INTO THE DEFIBRATOR FOR FEW MINUTES UNDER HIGH TEMPERATURE WHILE THEY ARE GROUND TO FORM A PULP. FROM THE DEFIBRATOR, THE PULP ENTERS A BLOWLINE, WHERE IT IS MIXED WITH RESIN. • IT IS THEN PASSED THROUGH DRYER WHERE IT DRIES OUT QUICKLY. 4)MAT FORMATION: • THE DRY FIBERS ARE THEN CONVEYED TO THE MAT FORMING SYSTEM. • THE EDGE TRIMMING SAWS TRIM THE EDGES OF THE MAT TO GIVE THE DESIRED LENGTH TO THE BOARD. • THE MAT IS THEN PASSED THROUGH THE HOT PRESS TO MAKE THE STRONG BONDING OF THE FIBER MATS. • THE BOARDS ARE WEIGHED ON A WEIGHING PLATFORM, COOLED TO ROOM TEMPERATURE IN A STAR COOLER, AND THEN STACKED ON A PLATFORM. THEY ARE THEN TRIMMED WITH THE HELP OF THE SAWS TO THE REQUIRED SIZE. 5)STORAGE: THE TRIMMED MDF BOARDS ARE THEN STACKED IN THE WAREHOUSE FROM WHERE THEY ARE LOADED INTO THE TRUCKS AS PER THE REQUIRED QUANTITY. • THE DENSITY OF THE BOARD ,WHERE EVALUATED IN RELATION TO THE DENSITY OF THE FIBER THAT GOES INTO MAKING THE PANEL, IS IMPORTANT. • A THICK FIBERBOARD PANEL AT A DENSITY IN THE CASE OF 700-720 KG/M3 MAY BE CONSIDERED AS HIGH DENSITY IN THE CASE OF SOFTWOOD FIBER PANELS. • FIBERBOARD IS MADE UP OF 82% WOOD FIBER,9% FORMAL DEHYDRATE RESIN GLUE,8% WATER AND 1% PARAFFIN WAX. MANUFACTING PROCESS OF PARTICLE BOARD:-  PARTICLEBOARD OR CHIPBOARD IS MANUFACTURED BY MIXING PARTICLES OR FLAKES OF WOOD OR JUTE- STICK TOGETHER WITH A RESIN AND FORMING THE MIXTURE INTO A SHEET.  THE RAW MATERIAL IS FED INTO A DISC CHIPPER WITH BETWEEN FOUR AND SIXTEEN RADIALLY ARRANGED BLADES.  THE CHIPS FROM DISK CHIPPERS ARE MORE UNIFORM IN SHAPE AND SIZE THAN FROM OTHER TYPES OF WOOD CHIPPERS.  THE PARTICLES ARE THEN DRIED, AND ANY OVERSIZE OR UNDERSIZED PARTICLES ARE SCREENED OUT.  RESIN IS THEN SPRAYED AS A FINE MIST ONTO THE PARTICLES.  PANEL PRODUCTION INVOLVES OTHER CHEMICALS INCLUDING WAX, DYES, WETTING AGENTS AND RELEASE AGENTS, TO AID PROCESSING OR MAKE THE FINAL PRODUCT RESISTANT TO WATER, FIRE OR INSECTS.  AFTER THE PARTICLES PASS THROUGH A MIST OF RESIN SUFFICIENT TO COAT ALL SURFACES, THEY ARE LAYERED INTO A CONTINUOUS CARPET.  THIS 'CARPET' IS THEN SEPARATED INTO DISCRETE, RECTANGULAR 'BLANKETS' WHICH WILL BE COMPACTED IN A COLD PRESS.  A SCALE WEIGHS THE FLAKES, AND THEY ARE DISTRIBUTED BY ROTATING RAKES.  IN GRADED-DENSITY PARTICLEBOARD, THE FLAKES ARE SPREAD BY AN AIR JET THAT THROWS FINER PARTICLES FURTHER THAN COARSE ONES.  THE FORMED SHEETS ARE COLD-COMPRESSED TO REDUCE THICKNESS AND MAKE THEM EASIER TO TRANSPORT.  THE BOARDS ARE COOLED, TRIMMED AND SANDED. MANUFACTURING OF LAMINATES 1. laminate sheetslook like a layered cake in transverse section. the base layer of the cake is a hard melamine plastic that gives the veneersheets their stability and shape. the second layer is made of high-density fibre board (also called particle-board) which like the base layer, contains melamine that makes it moisture resistant. the third layer in veneer sheets is decorative and looks polished and ornamental. this is the layer that we get to see. the decorative layer has prints of high resolution wood grain, stone or tiles. this however, is not the topmost layer. the last layer, in fact, is the waterproof durable layer that protects against stains and scratches. 2. once the layers are aligned and stacked on top of each other, they are put under immense pressure at very high temperatures. the presses have hydraulic rams that apply great pressure on the layers of raw material at temperatures reaching up to 400 degrees fahrenheit. 3. after stacking and pressing, the laminate sheetsare now ready to cool off. after careful inspection, the laminate sheets are again stacked to cure which helps Them stabilise. the planks are then profiled which involves cutting the edges for proper fitting during installation.
