This presentation will provide an opportunity for us to explore strategies and support tools proven to be effective in supporting students who are struggling with the literacy requirements in primary and secondary schools. In particular, addressing the needs of students who are struggling to keep up with the reading, writing or organisational tasks required of them. These students may be struggling because of learning difficulties/disabilities. Alternatively, they could be one of the growing numbers of ESL (English as a Second Language) students in our schools. While the need for effective remediation is paramount for all students struggling with literacy, this workshop will be focused on using the iPad as a compensatory tool for students. While at the same time as being providing with effective literacy instruction, students also need to be getting on with the business of ‘reading to earn’ - accessing the curriculum and learning content across all their subject areas, and being engaged in meaningful communication and assessment of what they have learnt. Compensatory tools are essential in the provision of accommodations and adjustments for all students, and this will be the focus for this presentation.

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.

The company operates in various African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, and others. They focus on digital payments, helping businesses accept and process payments on various channels like the web, mobile, ATM, and POS. Recently, they’ve been in the news due to allegations of misconduct within the company, which has affected their reputation and value. Flutterwave is an essential player in the African fintech landscape, aiming to drive growth for banks and businesses through digital payment solutions. The Flutterwave scandal involves allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour towards female employees by the company’s co-founder and CEO, Olugbenga Agboola. If you want to put the number of downloads into perspective, think about this. Apple announced the 10 billionth download back in January. In the past 5 months, Apple has seen over 5 billion apps downloaded from its App Store . That’s half of the downloads from the entire 2 and a half years that the App Store had been open. Today’s release did not give any details on the split between free and paid apps, but it did say that Apple has paid developers more than $2.5 billion over the past 3 years. This would suggest that developers earned about $.16 per download.
