3. INTRODUCTION
• In the Vedic literature मदन are mentioned and मदनफल is
given to induce vomiting.
• आचार्य चरक quoted that it as the best among वमन द्रव्य and about
133 र्ोग’s were described with it in the Kalpa sthaana.
• He also emphasized its role as antidote to many poisons.
• आचार्य सुश्रृत mentioned that vomiting may be induced even by
giving the flowers of मदन along with honey and rock salt.

12. MORPHOLOGY
• large shrub with strong spine, 1.3 to 3.2 cm long,
very short branches, branches are horizontal, rigid,
many of the lateral ones suppressed.

• मदनफल बीि चूणय+ दुग्ध+ र्वागु is given in रक्तञ्जपत्त and
रक्तस्राव.(च.क.1)
• मदनफल बीि चूणय+कांञ्जि applied over नाञ्जभ in शूल (चक्रदत्त)
• मदनफल+समुद्र लवण+मञ्जहष घृत made into लेप and given in
श्लीपद.( भै.र)
• मदन is the best drug for inducing वमन.
• In ज्वर मदनफल, ञ्जपप्पञ्जल, इन्द्रर्व and मधुक should be given
with warm water to induce vomiting.(च.ञ्जच.3)

29. RESEARCH PROFILE
• Histology of the liver section of the animals treated
with R.dumetorum improved the hepatotoxicity
caused by alcohol. Hence study concluded that
R.dumetorum has potential hepatoprotective activity.
• In anaesthetized dog a drug consisting of
R.dumetorum in dose 2,4 and 8 mg/kg produced
hypotension and respiratory depression.
