* On the front cover of my magazine I have used a shot that you would not necessarily
associate with pop magazines, however you could argue that it is a dominant representation
as there is only one model on the front, like the magazines have in the genre I was making.
* The image is a mid-focus shot of a teenage girl aged 16.
* She is looking to the left, instead of straight into the camera, as I wanted her to be looking
into the source of the light so that it would shine on her face.
* The image connotes confidence, and independence, something which may not be said as
stereotypical for a 16 year old teenage girl, however I think this image suits the kind of
magazine I wanted to create as through research I discovered most models look composed
and relaxed.
* This challenges dominant ideology – the belief that most teenagers cause trouble, and can’t
make much of themselves.
* This could also be seen as an alternative representation as it is seen unusual for teenagers
to be so mature.
3. *
* The stories that feature on the front of my magazine (cover lines), connote the social
group stereotypically to be quite young, due to the advertisement of poster
pages, and the stories within the magazine, however it could also appeal to young
adults aged 16-24 who are interested in this genre of music, as it doesn’t contain just
stuff for young teenagers etc.
* Fonts used on my magazine are typical of this genre – sans serif, however I have also
used serif font for the main body text to keep the magazine up-market, and fit in
with the audience.
* There is an absent representation of adults aged 40+, however this is because they
would most likely not be interested in this genre of magazine.
4. *
* Picture of a teenage female aged 16, connoting happiness however like the front cover
also connoting confidence and individuality, due to her being on her own and way she
is posed. She also looks quite relaxed. This is a dominant representation of
teenagers, however the location is perhaps not where you would stereotypically see a
teenager, therefore this could also be an alternative representation of that age group.
* Stories featured are the kinds of things stereotypically used in a pop magazine, for
example the use of real celebrities like Ed Sheeran and Olly Murs. Both of these
celebrities are represented on this page in a positive way.
* The fonts used on the page are both serif and sans serif, to fit the genre and also the
audience. Sans serif used to keep the magazine suited to the target audience and not
look overly professional as then I think it would fit more into an adults age range.
5. *
* Kept the red, white and black colour scheme, which is a dominant representation of magazines
of this genre, as through research I discovered quite a few magazines of this genre that have
been known to use this colour scheme.
* I only used 3 columns, unlike a lot of magazines that use 4/5, as I didn’t want the page to be
too jumbled up and messy, I wanted it to be neat and ordered, this is an alternative
representation for magazines of this genre as contents pages are stereotypically packed with
all sorts of information.
* In the pictures they are not dressed in a specific way, the images are quite casual and
relaxed, another dominant representation as in this genre of magazine, in photos the
models/celebrities are not specifically overdressed in any way, they wear normal, everyday
clothing, and I wanted to get this across to my audience, however the magazine still looks
upmarket.
* Once again an absent representation of people aged 40+.
* Use of social networking sites in the bottom right corner, dominant representation of teenagers
and a dominant ideology as teenagers are seen as the main users of these websites.
6. *
* Picture on the left, bleeding to the edges, picture is of a 16 year old female, and connotes
once again confidence. The way she is stood in the image and the way she is looking right into
the camera connotes importance, and individuality. She looked quite relaxed however could
be misinterpreted as being moody. Her clothing is casual and everyday clothing, yet again a
dominant representation of teenagers.
* The background to this image suggests an alternative representation as it is not the
stereotypical place you would expect to see a teenager.
* The interview on my double page spread uses emergent ideology, as it gives us a different kind
of representation of teenagers, for example being inspiring to other teenagers.
* Again the use of social networking sites, another dominant representation of teenagers.
* I have used a serif font for the main body text and a bold sans serif font for the questions in
the interview, this text reinforces the dominant representation of this genre of magazine.
