3. Characters
• The Kooks – small indie band, 4 members.
Who appear to be in the middle of a rehearsal
as the band member on the left is singing.
• All have similar hair and facial expressions
which makes them look youthful which is
specific to their genre of music
• Similar hair, clothing, facial expressions and
musical instruments signifies that they are all
connected through music i.e indie rock
4. Narrative
• There is a narrative enigma within the album
cover of a concert as they appear to be in a
rehearsal.
• They are all looking towards the floor, and
their negative facial expressions make them
appear overworked and tired.
• The cramped space in the room suggests they
are on a low budget tour.
5. Iconography
• The guitars that the band are playing are iconic for the indie rock music
genre.
• The acoustic guitars link more towards indie music, whereas the electric
guitar links more towards rock music.
• Their messy hairstyles and clothing are ironically representing the
stereotypical acoustic boy band
• Man in the background (drummer) looks like Miles Kane and Johnny Marr
in terms or hair and clothing style, who are iconic members of the indie
genre world.
• On the reverse of the digipack, the use of red and black colour scheme is
continued. The red holds the connotation of danger but also passion and
love, which could signify the bands passion and love for music. The colour
black has connotations of mystery which contrasts with all the typical
colours from their hometown (Brighton) such as the neon signs at funfairs
and on the beach. This suggests that they are trying to get away from their
roots.
6. Setting
• The images have a plain background which contrasts
with the black in the foreground image (artists)
• The setting is monochrome due to the use of black and
white, which is a popular within indie music videos as it
adds a ‘gritty’ look to the film. It also makes the use of
the colour red on the text more noticeable.
• The images were taken in what appears to be a low
budget, rehearsal room representing the known
struggle of acoustic bands have due to money issues
• The white walls in the background creates contrast
with dark clothing making the boys stand out as a band
7. Technical Codes
• The image uses low key lighting in order to create
a more dramatic contrast between the
foreground and background images
• All of the text is in a Sans Serif font making the
digipack informal, however the informality is
emphasised more via the use of capital letters for
the entirety of the album’s text.
• Because the band are not directly addressing the
audience it makes them seem shy, giving the
audience the impression that they are a new
band
