4. Breif History of
Darjeeling…….
The history of Darjeeling is directly linked with that of
Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan & British Empire (before India’s
independence).
Before 1780s-Darjeeling (area between rivers Mechi &
Teesta) was part of Sikkim; Kalingpong area was part of
Bhutan who taken it from Sikkim.
5. 1780-The Gorkha army attackes Sikkim in a series
of 17 invasions & took away land upto Teesta &
also attacked Rabdentse.
Treaty of Saugali 1816- After Anglo-Gorkha war
(1814-1816), Nepal cedes the land between Mechi &
Teesta to the East India Company.
Treaty of Titalia(1817)-TheBritish hands over
those land to the Sikkimese Chogyal.

asked East India Company
to posses this area as
sanatorium.
7. Darjeeling Deed,1835
After the Treaty of Titalia, the British increased
their influence on Sikkim.
1835, British forced the Chogyal to gift Darjeeling
as “Sanatorium”.
English men were facing problem due to hot
climate & wanted to spend holidays in cooler hill
station.
8. Darjeeling was gifted “out of
friendship”.
Deed was signed by Tsedup
Namgyal in 1835.
“All the lands South of Great
Runjeet, east of Balasur, Kahail
& Little Runjeet & West of
Rangpo & Mahanadi” was
presented to the compacy
9. Therefore the company Govt. is taking charge of
the above said land.
The Kuchaws , Karthaks, Dingpongs,
Chowdhuries along with Rayats will no longer be
under the control of the Chogyal.
From the date of proclamation, the Lepchas,
Bhutias, Meches & Dhimmals & all the people
residing under this regions are now Rayats of the
company Govt.

11. Darjeeling provided……
Facilities in free trade.
Extensive forest land for cultivation .
This caused a number of Lepchas & Nepalese
to migrate & settle in Darjeeling.
12. Deed Of Grant
Threatened…….
Monopoly of the Bhutia families.
Aged population & inter-tribe relationship.
Relationship of Sikkim with Bhutan, Nepal & Tibet & further
worsening with the Britisher (1850-1860)(due to imprisonment of
superintendant Dr.Camphbell & botanist J.D.Hooker by
Chogyal’s minster Tokyang Namgyal in 1849).
As a result, 28th March 1861 Peace Treaty was singed in
Tumlong & thus Sikkim became British dependant.
13. Devolopment of Darjeeling
after the 1835 Deed……..
1835-Darjeeling Family Hotel established.
1839-First Post Office was established.
1841-Tea Plantation was started in Darjeeling by
Dr.Camphbell.
1847-Loreto School was set up.

15. 1849-1852-Old Military Cart Road linking Pankhabari,
Kurseong, Ghoom & Dajeeling constructed.
1850-Darjeeling Municipality was constituted.
1859-First Tea Factory was set up in makaibari.
1862-Cinchona plantation was started.
1864-St.Paul’s School was started.
1865-Darjeeling Hill Cart Road completed from
Kurseong to Darjeeling.

17. 1866-Kalingpong (part of Bhutan) was incorporated
into Darjeeling District.
1868-Planter’s Club was set up.
1873-First Annual General Meeting of Darjeeling
planters’ were held.
1878-North Bengal Railway opened.
1881-Darjeeling Himalayan Railways from Darjeeling
completed.

19. 1883-Eden Sanatorium came
into existence.
1891-Sub-division of
Kurseong was formed.
1898-Sidrapong Hyel Power
Project introduced.
1907-Siliguri sub-dvision was
created.
