rivers. The prominent rivers

• Meghalaya receives the heaviest
rainfall anywhere on Earth and all
this water creates rivers that are
some of the steepest and most
powerful on the planet. The

Arunachal Pradesh-
• Arunachal Pradesh has a vast reserve of
mineral oils and gas. This state has also
coal reserves.

10. Endemic and Exotic species
in Arunachal Pradesh
• Over 500 bird species inhabit Arunachal
Pradesh including some endangered and
endemic ones like, white winged wood
duck, Sclater's Monal, Temmincks
Tragopan, black necked crane, Mishmi
wren and Bengal florican. The 'Mithun'
(Bos Frontails) exist both in wild and semi-
domesticated form
11. Endemic and Exotic species
found in Meghalaya-
• Endemic plant species have been recorded
from Meghalaya representing 8.44% of the
state’s flora. Of these, around 102 are
listed under various Threat Categories and
two in the Extinct Category.
Ilex khasiana and Nepenthes khasiana are
the Endemic and Critically Endangered
species.
• Some of the Endemic and Endangered
species found in Meghalaya are Adinandra,
Griffithii, Ceropegia, Arnottiana, Clematis
apiculata, Elaeagnus conferta, dendroidea,
Eriocaulon,etc.
13. Wildlife in Arunachal
Pradesh-
• Wildlife in Arunachal Pradesh Given to the
topographical and climatic suitability, the woods
of Arunachal Pradesh offer a natural habitat for
the mammals. Mishmi, Takin, Hoolock Gibbon,
Musk Deer, Bharal, Hisbid Hare, Capped
Langur, Red panda Tiger, Leopard, Snow-
leopard, Clouded leopard, Barking Deer, Serow,
Honger, Small cats, Black Bear and rare birds.
Flying Squirrel and more than 500 species of
birds are some rare and endangered species of
animals and birds which are conserved in two
National Parks and four Wildlife Sanctuaries of

14. Wildlife in
Meghalaya-
• Meghalaya is a part of Indo-Burma biodiversity
hot spot and identified as key area for
biodiversity conservation due to high species
diversity and high level of endemism. The rare
and highly endangered Clouded Leopard is the
State Animal. Other carnivores found here are
Leopard, Leopard cat, Jungle cat, Golden Cat,
Marbled Cat, Dhole or Indian Wild Dog and
Indian Wolf.
• Herbivores commonly found are Elephant, Gaur,
Sambar, Serow and Barking deer. Omnivores
comprise of Jackals, Common fox, Sloth Bear,
Himalayan Black Bear, Large Indian civets,
Yellow throated Marten, Mongoose, Hog Badger
etc.
16. Water Pollution status
in Arunachal Pradesh-
• The rivers flowing through Arunachal
Pradesh have been considered to be
clean and uncontaminated in the
past. However, few studies indicated
that these rivers are now getting
polluted due to domestic, industrial
and agricultural wastes. ... During
wet season the river also receives
pollution from agricultural land.
17. Water Pollution status
in Meghalaya-
• On average 43% of water bodies are
polluted. The highest percentage of
pollution is found in the Jaintia region
followed by Khasi and Garo regions.
The figure is alarming for a small
state and calls for an urgent need for
sensitization of the community to take
immediate steps to mitigate the
situation.
