2. INTRODUCTION
The mountain terrain of Arunachal pradesh covered by the
Himalayas and the patkai hills offer wildlife adventure and
abounding luxuriant forest . Some of the highest peak of the
himalayas like gorichen ,kangto , nyegi kangsang are located
in this region. The archetypal climate condition and
topographical features has led to the growth of myriad pant
and animal lives adding gorgeousness to the panorama. The
territory of Arunachal prades encompasses tropical forest, dub
tropical forest ,grasslands and degraded forest. There are 2
national parks ,6 wildlife sancturies ,1 biosphere reserved and
1 orchid sanctuary in the state. Arunachal pradesh provides
shelter to 85 spesies of terrestrial mammals ,more than 500
avian species of reptiles, butterflies & insects.
3. FLORA AND FAUNA OF ARUNACHAL PRADESH
As per State of Forest Report, 1999 of Forest Survey of India, about 82% of
total geographical area of 83,740 sq. kms., which is about 62% of the total
geographical area and includes 10185.40 sq. km. of Reserve & Protected
Forests which is about 12% of the area while the Protected Area Network
covers and area of 9527.99 sq. km being 12% of the area and balance 38% is
Unclassified Forest. The State has 20% species of country’s fauna, 4500
species of flowering plants, 400 species of pteridophytes, 23 species of
conifers, 35 species of bamboos, 20 species of canes, 52 Rhododendron
species & more than 500 species of orchids and is considered as one of the
12 mega diversity “Hot Spots” in the world
4. Arunachal is the land of green gold. Due to the variation in altitudes
and climatic conditions, different places of Arunachal Pradesh have
different types of forests.
Tropical:
1.Northern Tropical Semi-evergreen Forests.
2.Northern Tropical Evergreen Forests.
3.Northern Tropical Moist Deciduous Forests.
4.Secondary Bamboo Breaks
Sub-tropical:
1.East Himalayan Sub-tropical broad leafed Forests.
2.Sub-tropical Pint Forests.
FLORA IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH
6. The fauna of Arunachal Pradesh is
equally rich with as many as 25
species of mammals included in
Schedule – I of the Wildlife
(Protection) Act, 1972.
The large herbivours of the foot-hills
and adjoining plains are the
elephant (Elephas maximus), gaur
(Bos gaurus) and the wild buffalo
(Bubalus bufalis).
State which has four major cats, i.e. tiger
(Panthera tigris), leopard (Panthera
pardus), clouded leopard (Neofelis
nebulosa) and snow leopard
(Panthera uncia). Lesser cats like
the golden cat, leopard cat and the
marbled cat are also found here.
7. • Seven species of primates i.e. hoolock gibbon, slow loris, Assamese macaque,
rhesus macaque, pig-tailed macaque, stump-tailed macaque, and capped langur
also occur in the forests of the State
• the smaller mammals several Rodents (squirrel, porcupine and rats), Civets,
mongoose, linsang, shrew and bat species are also to be found.
•On higher elevations, animals like goral, Himalayan black bear, red panda, are
met with in various parts of the State.
•Over 500 bird species inhabit Arunachal Pradesh including some endangered and
endemic ones like, white winged wood duck, Sclater’s Monal, Temmincks
Tragopan, black necked crane, Mishmi wren and Bengal florican.
•The 'Mithun' (Bos Frontails) exist both in wild and semi-domesticated form. This
animal has religious significance and intimate relation with socio-cultural life of
the people. Traditionally, the mithun is a unit of wealth and is allowed to move
freely in jungle till it is either used for food on festive occasions and marriage
feasts, or for barter.
•Arunachal Pradesh is also the happy home of the great Indian Hornbills-the set
extraordinary bird with an inordinately large beak which is also the State bird
