In this project, I have attempted to use the New General Self-Efficacy Scale to see where I stand when it comes to my self-efficacy. I have attempted the test twice to this end. I analyzed the reasons for my mediocre score in the first attempt, taken concrete measures to deal with my shortcomings, and then re-taken the test to see how effective the measures I took were in increasing my self-efficacy. They indeed were!!

PSYCHOLOGY PROJECT ON SELF-EFFICACY
(BY SIDDHANTH NADKARNI FYJC ARTS (B) ROLL NO.220)
The term “self-efficacy” in its broadest sense
indicates an individual's level of confidence in their
capacity to accomplish a task or to achieve a
particular objective. The concept of self-efficacy
was inaugurally conceived by the late Canadian-
American Psychologist, Albert Bandura OC. In
today’s day and age, psychologists assert that our
sense of self-efficacy can, to a significant extent
have an impact on whether or not we actually
accomplish a given task. According to the person
who first coined this term, the fundamental
proponents of the concept, self-efficacy are:
vicarious learning, previous experiences, affective
state, observations, physiological or psychological
arousal, locus of control, verbal
persuasion/coercion, and enactive mastery among
others. An undeniable link between Self-efficacy
and academic achievement and the ability to
overcome phobias has been established as a result
of numerous experiments in the past.
Self-efficacy is a variable
construct. It varies depending
upon the situation one may find
themself in. In other words, you
may have a high self-efficacy
toward certain situations (like a
task with a high success rate
based on previous instances) but
a low self-efficacy toward others.
Albert Bandura's theory of self-
efficacy has a wide ambit of
applications, including but not
limited to overcoming phobias,
significantly incrementing
performance in academics, and
inculcating healthy behaviourism
in oneself.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH SELF
EFFICACY:
1. High Self Confidence
2. Accurate Self Evaluation
3. Willingness to take risks
4. Sense of Accomplishment
THE FOLLOWING ARE THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF LOW SELF
EFFICACY:
1. High Fear of risks
2. High Fear of uncertainty
3. High Fear of failure

Using a 5 - point rating scale, (New General Self-Efficacy Scale,
2001) show how much you agree or disagree with something:
1. I will be able to achieve most of the goals that I set for
myself. [3]
2. When facing difficult tasks, I am certain that I will accomplish
them. [2]
3. In general, I think that I can obtain outcomes that are
important to me. [3]
4. I believe I can succeed at mostly any endeavour I set in my
mind. [4]
5. I will be able to successfully overcome many challenges. [3]
6. I am confident that I can perform effectively on many
different tasks. [4]
7. Compared to other people, I can do most tasks very well. [3]
8. Even when things are tough, I can perform quite well. [3]

PSYCHOLOGY PROJECT ON SELF-EFFICACY
(BY SIDDHANTH NADKARNI FYJC ARTS (B) ROLL NO.220)
After spending a lot of time on introspection and contemplating the various possible factors
responsible for my average performance in the self-efficacy test, I managed to narrow down on the
following reasons behind my unsatisfactory self-efficacy:
AN ANALYSIS OF MY SCORE:
• Since I am multifaceted like
most other human beings, I
found myself setting goals that
either directly or indirectly
conflicted with each other
• I hold a lot of doubt and
uncertainty about what is
possible for me and what is
not. This significantly limits my
ability to achieve most of the
goals that I set for myself.
• Whenever I am entrusted with
a significantly challenging or
difficult task, I subconsciously
tend to think that it is way
beyond my skillset and
capability right from the start.
• As a consequence of the
aforementioned problem, I
often tend to procrastinate,
which does very little to
mitigate the challenge posed
by the already difficult task
• In case the outcome of a task I
am entrusted with, is very
important for me, I generally
tend to overthink about
everything that is at stake and
about what would happen to
my reputation/credibility
should I fail at the task.
• The aforementioned problem
adds to my stress which
consequently adversely
affects my performance in the
task. Hence the outcomes of
such tasks often do not work in
my favor.
• I generally do not tend to
execute tasks better than my
peers mainly due to the fact
that I let an inferiority
complex creep into my head.
Instead of using the improved
performance of my peers as a
source of motivation to
improve myself, I tend to think
of myself as incompetent.
Therefore, my results are not
as impressive as my peers’
• I attribute my failure to
overcome most challenges to
my inability to plan ahead. I
also fail to analyze the
pattern of challenges that I
have unsuccessfully faced in
the past which prevents me
from learning from them.
• I often hesitate to ask my
elders/peers for help with
facing challenges mainly due
to the fear of being ridiculed,
rejected and most importantly
the fear of receiving the
answer “no”.
• When things get tough, they
definitely do not get the
better of me as handling
pressure is absolutely not my
forte. I easily succumb to
pressure and hence fail to
quickly formulate a plan to
get the job done when the
tough gets going.
• As a consequence of this, I am
almost never placed in a
position of leadership.

Following my analysis of the reasons behind my dismal score, I decided to give myself 15
days to improve my self-efficacy. In order to ensure my improvement, I decided to take the
measures given below:
COURSE OF ACTION FOR IMPROVEMENT:
• In order to achieve most
of my goals in case of
conflicts, I must be honest
with myself and ask
myself whether or not I
am compromising on
other important goals by
achieving a particular
one.
• I must increase my
capabilities to the point
that any doubt
regarding their
inadequacy is eliminated.
• Instead of thinking of
challenging tasks as
burdens, and
procrastinating, I must
think of them as
opportunities that will
help me enhance my
skillset and boost my
confidence.
• If I am unable to execute
a task alone, I must try to
garner the assistance of
my well-wishers, like my
friends, family or teacher
• When the outcome of a
task is important for me, I
can convert my weakness
into a strength. Instead of
thinking about how a
negative outcome could
ruin things for me, I could
visualise a positive
outcome and use that as
motivation to work
towards making that
outcome materialize.
• To achieve this, I can use
affirmations.
• Before charting my
course of action to
overcome a challenge, I
must plan ahead by
always keeping in mind
reasonably foreseeable
outcomes. I must learn
from my past mistakes to
prevent re-occurrences.
• Whenever I hesitate to
ask my near and dear
ones for help, I must
remember that they want
me to succeed in life.
• With so much uncertainty
glaring me in the face,
rather than seeing the
pressure of the moment
as a threat toward my
self-worth, I must learn to
look at it as an
opportunity to challenge
myself and have fun with
it.
• I must reframe tasks as
temporary as pressure
mainly comes with the
do- or-die attitude.
• Whenever any of my
peers do exceedingly
well at a particular task,
I must remember the line
“If they can do it, I can
too!”. This will eliminate
the possibility of an
inferiority complex
creeping into me. On the
contrary, it might push
me to my peak
performance.
• I must compete with
myself and not my peers.
