CASE SCENARIO
It happens all the time: good employees get a promotion, and
suddenly, they’re not so good anymore. Such is the case for a cat
shelter, “Paw Needs Families”, as Della, a cleaner turned assistant
manager.
Then the new manager started arriving late, letting applications sit,
and slipped on inoculations, all serious offenses.
Instead of confronting Della directly, general meetings were held,
and an assistant manager was hired to compensate for Della’s
shortcomings.
Ultimately, Della never cleaned up her act, and was fired.
Many experts said the situation could have been avoided.
STRENGTH & WEAKNESS
STRENGTH
• Pledged to give safety for cats
• Adoption is cheaper
• Reinforces animal control
WEAKNESS
• Euthanizing terminally ill and old
aged cats
• Overcrowding leads to
discomfort for cats and increased
expenses
• Adopters and staff may have to
deal with undesirable behaviors
as the past history of the
adoptees are usually not known
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Della neglected the responsibilities assigned to her after she has
been promoted as an assistant manager.
ALTERNATIVE COURSE OF ACTION (ACA)
• Change Della’s attitude
• Directly confront Della
• Set consequences if a change of habit is not made
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES:
CHANGE DELLA’S ATTITUDE
ADVANTAGES
• Show signs of good
management in the company.
• Enhances overall workforce
environment.
• Other co-workers may be
involved and they will improve
together.
DISADVANTAGES
• Requires strenuous efforts.
• Is futile if not willing to
cooperate.
• Has to be the primary focus
compared to other workers.
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES:
DIRECTLY CONFRONT DELLA
ADVANTAGES
• Direct communication means
that the message will be
uninterrupted and clear.
• Della will have a chance to
negotiate.
• Stimulates a sense of
belongingness.
DISADVANTAGES
• A conflict may incur.
• Manager may have a hard
time to confront / Show
cowardice.
• Communication may not be
made if Della refuses to
reciprocate.
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES:
SET CONSEQUENCES IF A CHANGE OF
HABIT IS NOT MADE
ADVANTAGES
• Gives Della a chance at work.
• Consequences will also be
implemented to other workers
which reduces the chance of
repetitive behavior from
others.
• Realize and learn which types
of behaviors / actions are
acceptable through the use of
DISADVANTAGES
• Affects her self-esteem.
• May feel threatened through
the authoritarian management.
• In worst case scenarios, it is an
ineffective method and will
continue to remain non-
responsive and apathetic
towards her responsibilities.
CHOICE OF ACA
Directly confront Della.
STATEMENT OF REASONING:
The issue shall remain confidential between the manager and Della.
This reduces the likelihood of her getting embarrassed in front of
her co-workers.
CHOICE OF ACA - IMPLEMENTATION
• A meeting will be held with her manager
• Point out unwanted behavior
• Della reciprocates
• Manager gets the chance to listen
- Regarding the work place: the manager will be able to create a
solution through negotiations, positive reinforcements (rewards,
encouragements, pep talks, etc) or change the workplace
atmosphere and make sure that it’s comfortable for everyone
- Irrelevant to work place: the manager may suggest that she
needs to seek help.
CHOICE OF ACA - IMPLEMENTATION
• The manager should be consistent with the changes he made
• Make sure to check on Della every now and then to ensure her
productivity and wellness.
• Della’s attitude will not only change in the workplace but it would
also affect her outside of work. This method will improve her as an
employee and as a person.
• On the other hand, the manager gains more experience dealing
with employees and earns Della’s trust.

Case Study Analysis for English for Business Communication

  • 3. CASE SCENARIO It happens all the time: good employees get a promotion, and suddenly, they’re not so good anymore. Such is the case for a cat shelter, “Paw Needs Families”, as Della, a cleaner turned assistant manager. Then the new manager started arriving late, letting applications sit, and slipped on inoculations, all serious offenses. Instead of confronting Della directly, general meetings were held, and an assistant manager was hired to compensate for Della’s shortcomings. Ultimately, Della never cleaned up her act, and was fired. Many experts said the situation could have been avoided.
  • 4. STRENGTH & WEAKNESS STRENGTH • Pledged to give safety for cats • Adoption is cheaper • Reinforces animal control WEAKNESS • Euthanizing terminally ill and old aged cats • Overcrowding leads to discomfort for cats and increased expenses • Adopters and staff may have to deal with undesirable behaviors as the past history of the adoptees are usually not known
  • 5. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Della neglected the responsibilities assigned to her after she has been promoted as an assistant manager. ALTERNATIVE COURSE OF ACTION (ACA) • Change Della’s attitude • Directly confront Della • Set consequences if a change of habit is not made
  • 6. ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES: CHANGE DELLA’S ATTITUDE ADVANTAGES • Show signs of good management in the company. • Enhances overall workforce environment. • Other co-workers may be involved and they will improve together. DISADVANTAGES • Requires strenuous efforts. • Is futile if not willing to cooperate. • Has to be the primary focus compared to other workers.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES: DIRECTLY CONFRONT DELLA ADVANTAGES • Direct communication means that the message will be uninterrupted and clear. • Della will have a chance to negotiate. • Stimulates a sense of belongingness. DISADVANTAGES • A conflict may incur. • Manager may have a hard time to confront / Show cowardice. • Communication may not be made if Della refuses to reciprocate.
  • 8. ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES: SET CONSEQUENCES IF A CHANGE OF HABIT IS NOT MADE ADVANTAGES • Gives Della a chance at work. • Consequences will also be implemented to other workers which reduces the chance of repetitive behavior from others. • Realize and learn which types of behaviors / actions are acceptable through the use of DISADVANTAGES • Affects her self-esteem. • May feel threatened through the authoritarian management. • In worst case scenarios, it is an ineffective method and will continue to remain non- responsive and apathetic towards her responsibilities.
  • 9. CHOICE OF ACA Directly confront Della. STATEMENT OF REASONING: The issue shall remain confidential between the manager and Della. This reduces the likelihood of her getting embarrassed in front of her co-workers.
  • 10. CHOICE OF ACA - IMPLEMENTATION • A meeting will be held with her manager • Point out unwanted behavior • Della reciprocates • Manager gets the chance to listen - Regarding the work place: the manager will be able to create a solution through negotiations, positive reinforcements (rewards, encouragements, pep talks, etc) or change the workplace atmosphere and make sure that it’s comfortable for everyone - Irrelevant to work place: the manager may suggest that she needs to seek help.
  • 11. CHOICE OF ACA - IMPLEMENTATION • The manager should be consistent with the changes he made • Make sure to check on Della every now and then to ensure her productivity and wellness. • Della’s attitude will not only change in the workplace but it would also affect her outside of work. This method will improve her as an employee and as a person. • On the other hand, the manager gains more experience dealing with employees and earns Della’s trust.
