Air pollution occurs when harmful substances are introduced into the atmosphere from both anthropogenic and natural sources. Major air pollutants include carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, ground-level ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and volatile organic compounds. The top sources of air pollution are dust and construction, domestic cooking, waste burning, transport, diesel generators, and industries. Air pollution adversely affects human health, the environment, climate, ecosystems, agriculture, and the economy. Greenhouse gases from fuel combustion cause global climate change by trapping sun rays and increasing temperatures. The release of CFCs from products damages the stratospheric ozone layer. Methods to mitigate air pollution include developing new technologies, recycling, sustainable practices,
2. Air pollution occurs when harmful or excessive quantities of substances
including gases (such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide,
nitrous oxides, methane and chlorofluorocarbons), particulates (both organic
and inorganic), and biological molecules are introduced into Earth's
atmosphere.
3. An air pollutant is a material in the air that can have adverse effects on humans and the
ecosystem. The substance can be solid particles, liquid droplets, or gases.
5. These sources can be classified into two major categories:-
1. Anthropogenic (man-made) sources
2. Natural sources
Anthropogenic(man – made) sources:-
12. It generally comes from the build
up of carbon dioxide gas in the
atmosphere.
Carbon dioxide is produced when
fuels are burnt.
In this type of pollution sun rays go
to the atmosphere and they are
trapped by greenhouse gases. So
the temperature on the earth
increases.
13. It is another result of air
pollution.
Chemicals released by
our activities affect the
stratosphere.
Release of CFC from
heating aerosol cans,
refrigerator equipment's,
are some of the causes
of “Holes in Ozone”.
15. Control Measures
Carpool, use public transportation, bike, or walk whenever possible.
Follow gasoline refuelling instructions for efficient vapour recovery, being
careful not to spill fuel and always tightening your gas cap securely.
Consider purchasing portable gasoline containers labelled “spill-proof,” where
available.
Keep car, boat, and other engines properly tuned.
Be sure your tires are properly inflated.
Use environmentally safe paints and cleaning products whenever possible.
Mulch or compost leaves and yard waste.
Consider using gas logs instead of wood.
